Character bingo: Sally obviously, Scourge, and/or Sonia and Manic :3c

Sally: Look if you've been following me online for Literally Any Amount Of Time, you already know I adore this character. She's cool, she's compelling, even now she feels unique within the franchise...I could draw and write and talk about her and everything to do with her for hours and not be finished, she is my absolute favorite. I even cheated a little to give her a Bingo here; I don't think she's better as part of a dynamic, indeed I think one of the things that stands out about her is how, even as she was designed to be a Love Interest, she actually stands as her own character very well. But I do think a lot of her most fascinating traits are best revealed through how she relates with and to others, and I adore the Sonic/Sally ship, so I figger it's close enough to qualify.

Scourge: So Scourge scored pretty low here, but only because there really aren't that many middle-of-the-road options. I don't hate him or anything, indeed I actually rather like him; he works impressively well as a Dark Mirror to Sonic in a way that most other takes on the concept don't, someone who crossed the line that separates Sonic as A Free Spirit VS. A Callous Asshole. But by that same token, I really mostly care about him in relation to Sonic more so than as a character unto himself, which isn't the sort of character this Bingo card is oriented around.

Sonia: Again, the way this Bingo card works makes my overall opinion on Sonia seem harsher than it really is? Like, I do like her, and I especially appreciate what fans have done with her (lookin' at you, @wildwoodmage ), but within the actual original canon of the "Sonic Underground" cartoon there's just not all that much to her? I especially feel like more could have been done with her distinct Class Background in comparison to her siblings, which instead mostly just amounts to her being A Shallow Valley Girl most of the time. But I at least find her interesting enough to want to imagine more about her, and again, I think the way other fans have done that with her has done a lot to endear me to the character.

All Sonic universes and canons are valid

It needs to be said more and Sega should allow creators to take risks again on projects like cartoons, comics and more rather than treating canon like a holy text to follow.

I love the game universe but the mandate stuff, overcorrection of the brand and fear of pushing outside canon is a ball and chain for the franchise sometimes.

191: Easy Going // Fear

Fear Easy Going 1980, Unidisc

Count as me as one the numerous cretins, fumblers, oaves who had no idea that Goblin’s keyboardist Claudio Simonetti (of the Suspiria soundtrack fame) took a late ‘70s detour into Italo-disco. Easy Going was one such project, and even if they had nothing else going for them, they could at least lay claim to two of the coolest-looking sleeves of the era. The group copped their name from a popular dance club in Rome, and their self-titled 1978 debut features a detail from the club’s interior décor, a tile representation of two beefy Tom-of-Finland-types wrestling Greco-Roman style.

Easy Going would top it with the following year’s Fear, featuring a spindly, menacing shadow with a supernova in its crotch looming at the end of a tunnel—conveniently the play of light and shadow also suggests the underside of an erect cock. Hall of fame stuff.

An album would have to be extremely sick to match the expectations built up by that sleeve, but Fear actually gets pretty close, especially on side 1. My Canadian edition of the LP (wisely) flips the first two tracks so we kick things off with the high-tech title track, eight minutes of nasty synths, throbbing beats, spooky robot vox, and Sonic the Hedgehog jumping noises. Nothing else on the LP sounds quite as futuristic, or as dirty, but it’s all high-tier disco with cool electronic flourishes. The rest of the side is given over to the hysterical “I Strip You,” the story of initiating sexual congress with a girl so normally that she will not under any circumstances tell people she thinks you’re gay. On the flip, “Put Me in the Deal” rides a very slick bass groove, with brass hits that go pretty hard.

My intro to Italo disco was I-f’s Mixed Up in the Hague, and “Fear” could’ve absolutely been included in that lineup of all-time bangers without letting anyone down—the highest of praise for that track, and this pretty good overall release while I’m at it.

HELLO HELLO MY SUNBEAMS. For most every category, there was an impressive turn-out for pitches, so I thought we’d utilize the weirdness of this year’s GIFTENING to give something new a try. The popular vote winner for each category will happen on the first day, but on the second, the winner will be chosen from YOUR PITCHES. Mostly those pitches will be to me. The exception is in Miscellaneous, where you’ll be pitching to my family, because what I want to do and what is most entertaining isn’t necessarily the same thing.

So! How will we do this thing? GLAD YOU ASKED. I’ll link you to a form in a minute with space for one pitch. Once you fill it out, you’ll be asked if you want to do another. There’s no limit to the number of pitches you can send in! But remember that if you submit multiple entries for the same category, you’ll basically be competing against yourself.

NOW WE’VE GOT SOME RULES FOR DOING THIS (which I mostly stole from Holligay, because I have no creativity this year). Please read them carefully! I’ll toss pitches that break any of these, and I’d rather your hard work not go to waste.

19.) Favorite soundtrack?

The Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast. If you’ve never listened to it, do so immediately. The tunes in that version of that game are just KILLER and it’s tragic that they weren’t used in a more popular game. I think I listen to this soundtrack more than any other Sonic media.

40.) (all universes and adaptations) Write a love letter to your favorite scene.

Not gonna lie, I’m really not sure what this one means. Which is funny, because I’m pretty sure I sent this one to someone else. (Elias? I think it was Elias. It might’ve been Elias.)

This is further complicated by the fact that I’m not sure that I actually HAVE a favorite scene. There’s a lot of scenes that I love that come to mind while thinking this over, but there’s nothing immediately standing out and making me go “oh, yep, that’s the one!” so I legit don’t even know what one I should be writing about?? In the Archie comics there’s scenes of Sonic and Sally being affectionate, of Scourge in prison, of Geoffrey having that chat with Silver that stand out to me, but trying to rank them against each other is just... ow. And that’s just one continuity.

So yeah in conclusion this one is too hard and I don’t want to work that hard. YOU’RE NOT THE BOSS OF ME.

59.) Tell us what you think would make for an ideal Sonic movie.

Look, I’m not going to sit here and wax about plot or anything, because I think there’s tons of good ideas out there in terms of story. I care more about method, and IMO the ideal method for making a Sonic movie is just simply letting him be Sonic. Don’t try to explain him, don’t try to update him, don’t apologize for him, just... let him BE. Just plunk him down in a given situation and let him react -- and understand the character well enough BEFORE you start so those reactions will be genuine. Just... just understand what the fuck you’re working with.

This is a major part of why the OAV works so well. Did they change a shitton of stuff about the setting and backstory? Oh my god did they ever -- but it still works, because they allowed Sonic to just be. They didn’t try to adjust him to match the new story, they just allowed the story to flow around him. Sonic is still Sonic, and that should absolutely be the most important element in a movie about that’s allegedly about Sonic the Hedgehog.

Do you have any other thoughts to give on the other Sonic Cartoons?

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog: Weird silliness. Not too bad, not too great either, but for its time enjoyable.

Sonic OAV: A delightfully strange adventure.

Satam: A classic favorite, will always love Bunnie and Antoine, though the second season was kinda lackluster.

Sonic X: Another favorite, loved Cosmo and all the shippy moments for everyone with great stories.

Sonic Boom: While the jokes are pretty darn hilarious, I’m still cheesed that they turned Knuckles into a complete dunce and gave him a ridiculous design. NGL, I don’t watch it out of spite. (Though I will watch some clips if a friend recommends it.)

Ah Bunnie...easily one of my all-time favorite "Sonic" characters! It IS a genuine shame that SatAM gave her so little actual focus (even as it did give her some great moments and Christine Cavanaugh is genuinely irreplaceable in the role) and that the Archie comics never did an especially good/consistent job exploring her existential angst over being half-Roboticized? But even so. She's great. Great design, endearing personality, memorably unique...really and truly I love her.
