Sonic Frontiers: Two Updates In
So, to more neatly settle back in, I'm gonna give an updated impression on 2022's Sonic Frontiers. As a recap, I thought the game was pretty decent at launch. Certainly not the most replay value of the series but that first run was so exciting. The team seems to have adopted a more modern approach to encouraging returning players with content updates. Do I think it worked?
Tumblr media
...yeah. Update 1 was alright, but Update 2 changed so much about how you can play the game that it improves substantially in the hands of a skilled player. Namely, you can add a new move for traversal into Sonic's arsenal: the Spin Dash. The unlock criteria isn't explained by the game, but you need to get S ranks on all of the newly introduced "Action Chain Challenges", which act as score attacks on sections of the islands. It's a bit of an ordeal, since there's around 40 of them and the score requirements scale with your difficulty setting, but I understand why they did this.
The game wasn't designed with the Spin Dash in mind, so restricting your access to it until near the end of the game prevents you from breaking the intended story experience. Oh yeah, and this thing is SUPER powerful. It's fast, damages enemies it makes contact with, but more notably: it brings momentum back as a factor. While in the Spin Dash state, Sonic will gain speed on inclines and be able to launch off upward curves in terrain. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say this CHANGES EVERYTHING.
You can go flying to access areas in new and faster ways, as well as just style on enemies by charging right through them. But by far the biggest benefactor from this inclusion is the Cyberspace levels. Cyberspace is a part of Frontiers I was quite mixed on, since I thought maintaining the more typical linear platforming stages alongside the open zone made sense; yet the experience was bogged down by levels being 80% reused assets + layouts, and Sonic not controlling very well here. The Spin Dash can rectify that. Having more speed at your fingertips creates room for more exciting level runs with variable pathing, especially if combined with the ability to remove Sonic's deceleration in the air.
If you weren't too sold on Frontiers in a first run, I recommend giving another go with the new content. It does a lot to make a game I liked before into something even better, which has me more excited for the future of 3D Sonic. Especially with Update 3 coming later on, bringing back some old favorites as playable again.

KYLE CROUSE: And our next question! "Sonic’s dead. Nope, that’s it. He’s just dead. No, Eggman didn’t defeat him. No, there wasn’t some tragic accident or ultimate sacrifice. He died in his sleep. Why? Beats me. Maybe it was cardiac arrest from having one too many chili dogs at Chocola’s birthday bash. Who knows? Regardless, he is dead. What is the reaction from Sonic’s friends, foes, and most importantly Eggman to the blue hedgehog’s sudden and underwhelming demise?"
youtube
IAN FLYNN: Well, his friends are devastated, obviously. They're torn out of the frame. This is... not something they would have foreseen, or wanted, or were prepared for. Uh, most of the rivals? They're rather upset too, like... Jet's gonna be pissed that he doesn't get a chance to show up Sonic one last time, establish himself as the true Speediest There Is. It's gonna bother him a lot! Shadow? Uh, you know how emotive he is, but he's extra quiet and broody for a little bit. KYLE: Mhm. IAN: Eggman, I imagine, would seize upon the opportunity to launch a full-scale attack, because who's going to stand in his way now, mua ha ha ha! His friends are- Sonic's friends are rallied to action because they're gonna fight in his memory, and things go on for a little bit as they do, and then Eggman's chutzpah behind the whole thing just kinda peters out. It's just not the same. There's no Sonic, and it's- it's not like the War, y'know, he won that. He beat Sonic -- or at least, his minions did. The point is, it was his victory, he could claim it! KYLE: Mhm. IAN: Now there's no Sonic, there- and he's not coming back. There's no surprise last-minute confrontation, it's just him and the Fuzzy Buddies. KYLE: Yay. IAN: And eventually, I think would just kinda, like, peter out. He's not even showing up to fight anymore. He's just kinda sittin' there going, "Now what? I mean, I wanna do it, but I just- I don't have the drive to do it anymore." So he starts, like, targeting each of the friends, trying to get them to rise up to Sonic's caliber. He needs that challenge! He doesn't have the drive anymore! "Tails, get up here! Prove yourself! ...No? Still too early? Ugh, hurry it up." KYLE: [chuckling] I'm getting very much a Megamind sort of deal here. Eventually he becomes the hero! [laughs] IAN: [laughs] KYLE: I feel like this was a Boom episode. Like, we didn't- it's not a new Boom episode, it's one that already happened. IAN: [chuckles] KYLE: But, y'know... [chuckles]
----- TRANSCRIBER'S NOTE: Please remember that nothing that is said on BumbleKast is canon! It's just some guys and their opinions occasionally spitballing ideas. If you don't like an answer, you don't have to take it as Word of God or anything like that. It's all just for fun! ----- Everyone thank @pedanticat for reminding me of this question! Do you want a specific question transcribed and posted? Send the question and the episode date to my ask box! Or if you just want questions about a certain character, send me their name and I will see what I can do!

Help me decide what to stream for my birthday!
This Saturday I'll be doing a big birthday bash stream, and while I have tons of ideas, I only have so many hours in the day to stream them – and only a week to prepare!
Help me out by picking an option from the poll at the bottom: What would you be most interested in seeing this weekend? Read on and I'll explain our options...
All of my ideas loosely fall into three categories – I could play something multiplayer with friends, I could reminisce on old levels and creations I made long ago, or I could stream something that's a completely new and unique experience. Out of those categories, I've got five standout ideas:
New: Fortune Cookie - If you've ever watched ProtonJon stream, you know what this is. I've collected my entire game library on Backloggery and we'll choose 3-5 random games, then chat votes on which one they want to see. I'll play each game for about half an hour before we pick another set of games for another chat vote. Rinse and repeat! 🥠
Reminisce: WarioWare DIY Showcase - "Showcase" is the WiiWare version of DIY... and I've never played it! This would be a hybrid of new and old, where I'd try out all of the microgames I've never played before, as well as importing and showcasing all of my old microgames from DIY on the DS. Did you know DIY is the game that got me into programming? 👩‍💻
Reminisce: Zeta - At this point I've streamed all of my old Mari0 level packs, except one: Zeta, which was supposed to be the magnum opus of my early Mari0 days. It sits about halfway between New Super Mario World and Retrush in terms of quality, scope, and ideas. Should be a LOT of fun to unpack after ten years~ 🌅
Multiplayer: Tabletop Simulator / Cardé - I made a board game when I was twelve years old that's essentially "extreme chutes and ladders," a race around the board trying to get chain reactions of movement. This would be a hybrid of reminiscing and multiplayer, since I would get to recreate it in Tabletop Simulator... and subject my friends to it! 🎲
Multiplayer: Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed - Transformed is genuinely one of my favorite kart racers of all time, right next to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. I've been dying to play it with friends for a while now – it would make for an excellent birthday party game! I'd have to check in on who owns it and wants to play, but otherwise, it'd be the easiest to set up. 🏎️
So with all of that out of the way...

WIP Wednesday: Spidey Jonathan fic
Their dining room is decked out in streamers for Will’s birthday dinner. He wonders if his little brother picked Mario & Sonic or if they were the cheapest decorations in the store. It looks like dinner might have once been pot roast but is mostly slightly burnt meat and vegetables now with soupy-looking mashed potatoes. He should’ve just convinced Argyle to bring over pizza. Max and Lucas sit on either side of Will leaving Jonathan an empty chair on the other side of the table. Jonathan isn’t going to call his brother’s sixteenth birthday but well it’s not exactly a blowout bash. He looks over to Will who’s preoccupied shredding a carrot and immediately feels guilty that his party is so … lame.
“Hey Will” he starts, catching his attention “You wanna go to the Mishkin on friday night? They have this exhibit on psychedelic art and-”
“I can’t” Will says
Jonathan is a bit taken aback by the outright refusal.
“Friday is my art show remember?” Will explains
No, he did not remember. Between school, work, and superheroics he barely remembered that today is his birthday.
“Oh right”
“You are still coming right?” Will questions
“Right yea of course I am” Jonathan promises
“Speaking of, Argyle couldn’t make it tonight?” his mom asks suddenly
He’s not sure what one has to do with the other but their connected to his mom’s thought process he supposes.
“Uh no he had to work he’s picking me up later” Jonathan explains
“Right” she acknowledges
The table goes quiet again with everyone politely picking at their plates, maybe they could all convince his mom that everyone just really wanted cake. Max is the only one who’s stopped the charade of eating and picked up her phone to look through. Out of the corner of his eye, he notices Hopper about to say something about not having phones at the table.
“Woah Spiderman stopped a robbery down the block!” Max exclaims before Hopper can start his lecture.
“What let me see” Will insists scoohing closer to Max
He sees it happen before it does, but in his rush Will tips over his Coke and it would’ve gone all over the table if Jonathan hadn’t caught it so quickly. His mom gives him a look and mouths nice while Will apologizes he shrugs it off and Will’s attention is once again taken up by Spiderman.
“That is so cool”
“It’s just some guy who can stick to walls, what Jonathan just did now that’s cool” Lucas argues
“Oh come on like you wouldn’t want his powers” Max insists
“He’s just a guy” Lucas scoffs
“He’s Spiderman!” Max
Lucas rolls his eyes and ignores her going back to his dinner
“Whatever Will thinks he’s cool” Max goads
“Because he is” Will grins
Honestly it's embarrassing listening to himself take down that thief from the phone speaker.
“He’s a menace is what he is” Hopper grumbles
“A menace seriously?” Will sasses
“You sound like that crazy guy” Max laughs
“What crazy guy?” he asks
“You know the one who’s trying to figure out who Spiderman is?” Lucas explains like it’s obvious
“Yea, the one with the corkboard” Max elaborates pantomiming
“Is Spiderman a real man or is he 1000 spiders in a man suit” Will impersonates causing Max and Lucas to erupt into laughter.
But he has no clue what the three of them are talking about.

Alex Turner on the Arctic Monkeys' musical evolution
By Mark Savage (published on October 22 2022)
Alex Turner is out of breath.
The Arctic Monkeys frontman has just blazed through a guitar solo on Body Paint - the swaggering, Bowie-esque centrepiece of their new album, The Car - on TV institution Later with Jools Holland.
"You've parched me out there," he pants. "Could someone get me a water?"
Unusually, the Arctics are the only band in the studio. For the first time in 15 years, the show is devoting an entire episode to a single act - an honour reserved for rock legends like REM, Radiohead, Metallica and Oasis.
Turner and his band-mates appreciate the enormity of the situation. They film additional takes and switch up their setlist to ensure the new music is conveyed with appropriate punch and panache.
"Gotta make this one count," says Turner as the recording runs into its second hour. "We'll do an acoustic one, and then Born To Run."
The promised Springsteen cover never materialises. Nor does the band's hellraising 2007 hit Brianstorm, despite guitarist Jamie Cook idly bashing out the riff between takes. But, with almost twice as much Monkey business as they'd bargained for, the audience leaves on a high.
"I enjoyed it a great deal," agrees Turner, on the phone to the BBC a couple of days later. "I'm a big fan of that show and I have been for a long time, even before we put the band together."
In fact, his highlight in the run-up to the show was getting access to the Later vaults, to pick a performance that influenced him for broadcast on the show.
"I kind of lost myself in the archive back there for a minute, Mark, to be honest with you," he says. "I found myself gravitating to performances from 2002 and going, 'Oh God, yeah, I remember seeing that and getting excited about it.'"
Of course, 2002 is the year the Arctic Monkeys formed in Sheffield, where all four members were pupils of Stocksbridge High School.
Turner and guitarist Jamie Cook had only received their first guitars a year earlier, as Christmas presents from their parents. The first song they wrote was called "Matt Dave Rock Song" - named for a singer who subsequently left the band, and which they subsequently described as "junk" and "total crap".
But they progressed at speed, developing a sharp, nervy sound full of searing riffs and witty, literate lyrics. By 2005, people were eagerly swapping bootlegs, demos and gossip on dedicated message boards.
When their first album, Whatever People I Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, arrived in 2006 it became the UK's fastest-selling debut of all time, just weeks after Turner's 20th birthday.
Arctic Monkeys were suddenly the most written-about, talked-about rock band of their generation.
They responded by closing ranks.
Back-slapping events like the Brit Awards were avoided, the band accepting prizes in mailed-in videos, dressed as characters from The Wizard of Oz. When they played Radio 1's Live Lounge, they subverted their "rock saviour" image by covering Katy B's On A Mission and Girls Aloud's Love Machine.
"I can't really remember the impetus behind that decision," reflects Turner, "but it was a lot of fun".
Musically, Arctic Monkeys went from strength to strength, particularly on the hard-hitting Humbug (2009) and the leather-jacketed rock of AM (2013).
They last graced the charts in 2018 with the space-jazz concept album Tranquillity Base Hotel & Casino, which explored themes of consumerism and politics through the concept of a luxury resort on the moon.
Turner composed its languid, meandering songs on piano, declaring the guitar "had lost its ability to give me ideas".
Critics were divided. Rolling Stone called the album "indulgent", but Q Magazine thought it was "strange and wonderful". Fans sent the album to number one, but it's the only Arctic Monkeys record not to be certified platinum.
Released on Friday, The Car is tighter and more immediate than its predecessor but it spins in the same sonic universe.
Opening track There'd Better Be A Mirror Ball is all woozy keyboards and staccato string stabs, while Jet Skis On The Moat sees Turner slip on his velvet jacket for a brooding lounge-pop ballad.
"I made a big deal about the piano on the last record," says the singer, "but when I look at it now, the shift in sound between that record and the one before [AM] is more to do with the fact that my writing process [changed] around that time".
In the Arctic Monkeys' first decade, he explains, he'd take a song "into a rehearsal room and work out how it goes with the band". That's gradually become more insular, with Turner building up songs in his home studio until he feels they're ready.
"So the piano had a part in it, but being able to record myself and write to those recordings is perhaps what got us into this mess."
That's not the only thing that's changed.
"I can vaguely remember times in the past where I've been struck with the inspiration and written something quite quickly, but it feels like that happens less these days," he says. "But I'm not worried if it takes a little bit longer."
In fact, some of the musical motifs on The Car percolated for three years before he "persuaded them to be a pop song".
Among them was the instrumental refrain of Big Ideas, a gorgeous electric piano melody that "felt like it had aspirations to be a movie theme".
"It hung around for ages, that melody, and I'd play it whenever I found myself sitting at a piano [until] one of the band asked, 'Is that one of yours?'
"And that's about as excited as they get," he jokes.
Their enthusiasm encouraged him to build the passage into a song that describes a songwriter's (favourite) worst nightmare.
"I had big ideas... the kind you'd rather not share over the phone," Turner sings. "But now the orchestra's got us all surrounded and I can't for the life of me remember how they go."
It's one of many lyrics that hint at instability and dislocation.
The music, meanwhile, reflects his emotional turbulence. The band often sound like they're fighting to be heard - bursting through an orchestral swell to gasp for air, only to be dragged under the surface again.
"There was much discussion and deliberation" about those "push and pull dynamics", Turner says.
Some tracks, like Sculptures, were recorded with several different arrangements, then reconstructed in the mix.
The track was born when guitarist Jamie Cook wired a Moog synthesizer up to a drum machine, creating an ominous, industrial sound. Then it "went on its own journey", evolving into a full-band recording, before the original idea reasserted itself.
On the finished version, "it's almost like there's a button for the band and you press it and they step in for a bar, then they disappear back and you're in that synthesizer place," Turner explains.
"That, of course, is not the kind of idea that I would have had before we started. That's something that revealed itself during the process.
"So I'm thrilled that you mentioned the dynamics because that's something we attempted to explore and get a handle on this time. And yeah, I think I think we did a better job in that respect, than we did last time around."
Back on stage in Alexandra Palace, Arctic Monkeys are still figuring out how to play the new material live, taking a couple of passes at the funky, sqawkbox riffs of I Ain't Quite Where I Think I Am before they're satisfied.
Without a string section, the songs become harder, more full-blooded - giving an idea of how they'll nestle up to Fluorescent Adolescent and RU Mine on tour.
And while some bands (cough, Radiohead, cough) abandon their old hits when they settle on a new sound, Turner has no such inclination.
"There's certain numbers from the early records that I should think we would continue to keep playing. And there are other numbers we haven't played for a while that we could imagine knocking the dust off. "
"Nothing has been ruled out," he concludes. "Although Love Machine might be a stretch."

@the-winter-brothel asked: Happy Birthday Sonic! You have precisely five human girls that wish to celebrate with you! Three of them are positioned on her knees in front of them, Sara in the middle, Madonna on the left, Elise on the right. The three playfully share his cock, Sara keeps her hands around the shaft all the while stroking with a sense of precise decision. Tongue circling around the tip before offering to Elise, encouraging to deep throat it as she firmly though still carefully pushes her head down on it. The red head's face practically matches her hair, seeming to be the least experienced of the group. She pulls away at Sara's urging, trails of saliva still connecting her to his member. It's then offered to Madonna, who at first kisses it no doubt leaving a red lipstick mark but that was a well known signature of hers at this point. Rather than simply keeping it all to herself, she pulls Sara close, keeping the cock right in the middle between their lips before kissing the other girl. The kiss continues mouths pressing against each other, tongues brushing against each other and the hedgehog's member as it remains right in the middle of it. Merlina and Shahra remain fixated elsewhere, the witch hitting on his face, struggling to keep still with each movement and clearly squirming all the while, soft moans erupting from her as Shahra edges her on. Taking full advance of her ability to fly to press her chest against Merlina's back, hands going to cup and then play with her breasts, occasionally grabbing hold of her hips to make her properly grind against Sonic's face. The occasional giggle being heard from her indicating that she's amused by the witches bashfulness. A hand does drift down to in-between her legs, as nude as the rest of the girls here just having the added bonus of her hair being down rather than tied up like usual. She rubs against her clit, still taking delicate care to synth up her upcoming orgasm with Merlina's hand that she previously used to play with the smaller girls breast was not drifting down to rub her clit at well at a consistent steady speed wanting them both of them to cum at the same time. A particularly high pitched squeal being heard from her to indicate just how close she was. And with any luck, the other three would have him cum in perfect unison to them.
Tumblr media
The birthday hedgehog was in absolute.
Utter.
Birthday.
Bliss.
Over this. Having all of these girls, his girls, all around him. Pleasuring him, pleasuring themselves, holding nothing back and giving it all to him, and enjoying each other as well. He was lost in the sauce, so to speak.
