TOHO SPIRITED AWAY?? PLS GIVE ME THE DEETS

oh it was soooooooooo good i'm so happy i got a chance to see it!!! gorgeous design all around, there was no standout elements bc everything fit so well together. all the spirits + magical elements were done with traditional (japanese and western) style puppetry, so everything was articulated and manipulated by an operator, which had this really wonderful almost youth theatre vibe. a lot of times with shows that involve puppets, they'll try to make the puppets as advanced as possible to not make them 'childish' (see: war horse), but for something that's based heavily in folklore and IS a children's story, to me the only logical sense is to emphasize that particular angle. the puppets were also incredible, very well made and sooo accurate to the movie??? like impressively accurate. my faves were probably kamaji and haku? kamaji's six extra arms were each operated by a separate person who had one hand operating the elbow and one hand as the actual hand, so all eight hands were able to do everything, which mean there was some REALLY incredible choreography of just. all the stuff that he was doing, but also when he got up and walked it was soooooooo cool. and haku!!! he had two puppets actually, one 'full size' that was a big long foam articulated body that took i think four puppeteers, and there was a tiny haku that they used for the flying scenes that was basically just a little head and a ....idk what the actual technical term is but it was basically just a wind sock as the body on a big long pole so the puppeteer could essentially move him like you would a big ribbon! the scene were he first transforms and flies off was sooo pretty, the actor haku did a lil setup to a GORGEOUS spinning jump and when he landed he ducked down behind some of the chorus members and as he disappeared the tiny ribbon haku shot up from the same spot and started looping around.......... actual magic. also wow the actor playing haku was so pretty. and very tall. which i did not notice until the very end. i would not be suprised if he had ballet training bc tall and he had the ballet dancer chin/head posture. also the actor playing lin (also doublecast as chihiro's mom) was crazy hot. just so unbelievably hot. anyways. speaking of casting: noface as a popping dancer. UNREAL and incredible galaxy brained choice. he had a solo while they did a set change and WOW. spooky and gorgeous and also weirdly welcoming? really excellent job of embodying a sympathetic physicality that made it understandable why chihiro would let him in to the bath house in the first place. also for the curtain call he put the mask on the back of his head and literally did the bows backwards. insane. my ONLY complaint is that i didn't love noface's giant form, but that's mostly because years and years ago i saw a (different) puppet show with a grim reaper character that was very similar to giant noface (the telescoping neck + large body) and i literally thought at the time 'if you were going to do puppet noface that is exactly how you should do it', so 1) expectations 2) i'm pretty sure that version was done using quite a sophisticated extending mechanism, which would be antithetical to the rest of the puppets in the show, and 3) this giant noface was VERY big (probably at least 10-15 feet across? he was at least eight puppeteers with the original actor as the mask) so the logistics would not have worked. regardless. it is a very small complaint that literally no one else would have had unless they had seen the same show that i did in like. 2015. costumes were all unreal, the set was phenomenal; it actually took me WELL over an hour to figure out that the set literally stayed the same the entire time, it was just being rotated (it was on a turntable) and redressed + had a couple balconies flown in. also live orchestra?? in the set??????? i didnt even know they were THERE they had them behind a scrim on an upper level platform in the back and they pulled it up for curtain call and there was like. 15 ppl sitting back there????

ok but if i had to pick ONE thing that was my favourite, it would be that ALL the living things were played by someone alive. i know that sounds obvious, especialy for like. the dancing vases and the frog and the soot sprites, but even the PLANTS were puppets in their own way. like the hydrangea bushes that chihiro hides in at the beginning and the flower field that she and haku run through were done with chorus members wearing these beautiful flower head/chest/arm pieces. even the stone guardians at the tunnel at the beginning of the play were actors. it really underscored the magic of everything to have all the life be actually alive.

The more I think about this season and the choices made I get more angry and sad. In short, it was the last fucking season and they decided to keep Villaneve apart until the very last episode, then bring them together in ways we've always wanted only to rip them apart minutes later. Classic.

It felt sooo rushed that it actually took away some of the enjoyment of the sweet moments. All I was thinking was, why didn't we get this sooner. There was no point of dragging it out like they did. (Someone said that the writers clearly just didn't know how to write them together and I'm starting to believe that's true.) And to hear people behind the show say that "Villaneve relationship wouldn't have worked, the domestic life is not for them" and justify the ending by claiming that they're on different paths is so unbelievably insane because how would they know that?? They didn't even give Villaneve a chance to try. If we had them together sooner, they could have explored the relationship and it's possible conflicts more but they didn't do that. They just showed them being so fucking happy and content with each other for a tiny moment and then wanting us to believe that "tHAt cOuLD Never wOrk". So what was the point of it all? To suffer? Now it kind of seems that the "teaching" of the show was: you should just stay in your boring marriage and normal life and not fall in love with any dangerous women, see this as a warning!!

The message from the series finale and the messaging from the people responsible for making this show is so incredibly toxic. And the sad thing is that their egos are all so enormous that instead of ever taking a step back and listening to our very valid thoughts and concerns, they'll simply double down on everything and claim that the truth was in the writing. Lies, quite frankly. 4x08 was the perfect display of how Villaneve COULD work. They literally gave us half an episode of Villaneve waking up together, doing the dishes, sharing fries, kissing, "getting married" and then were told "but this would never work and we think the audience can see that". WHERE?? Where was I supposed to pick up on the messaging that this could never work? In the bullshit scene where Eve was dancing and V was killing and they claim that was Eve choosing life and V choosing death, therefore setting them on two separate paths. THE WHOLE REASON V WAS THERE WAS BECAUSE OF EVE. Eve chose that path just as much as V did. And Eve CHOSE Villanelle. She even tells V "I need you. I came here just to be with you." So they can fuck off with whatever message they thought they were sending because they not only failed to send it, but it was also just plain wrong. A reviewer made a beautiful comment about how the wedding and how Eve's words were very much to Villanelle joining themselves with one another in marriage. Eve was saying those words to Villanelle and Villanelle heard them. Then Eve went off to dance, while Villanelle consecrated that marriage in blood by finishing what they had both set out to do. The moment where they hugged afterward should've been like that moment after a wedding, where the couple realizes that they've both seen so busy for hours that this is the first time that they've had a chance to stop and breathe and just be with one another. And that would've been a beautiful way to end it. But the show just couldn't resist twisting the knife and going for the shock factor. They thought they were being revolutionary in choosing the "right" ending, when this show has never been about right and has always been about the unexpected and pushing boundaries. About people doing bad things but understanding the complexities of the messiness between good and bad, right and wrong, and that none of those things means that a person isn't deserving of love. They had a chance to send a beautiful message, but Laura Neal felt that would be too "meh" so decided to strike a final blow that took an entire franchise down with it

i know that eddie's first encounter with It and the way It manifests itself as his fear is very telling of him being gay, but what do you think the encounters It had with the other members of the loser's club (like mike with the bird, stan with the dead boys, etc) are indicative of?

Okay Let’s Talk About the Losers’ Fears!

The interesting thing about IT is that, for most kids, the fears IT manifests as are pretty basic. Movie monsters, comic book monsters, vampires, mummies, etc. So not all the Losers have super deep meanings behind their fears, the way Eddie and Beverly do, and I think it definitely reflects the level of contentment they experience in their every day life. Obviously Eddie’s IT experiences are symbolic of his fear of his sexuality and the self-loathing that comes along with that, disguised as a ‘diseases are gross!’ sort of thing because that’s easier to process for a little kid (and because IT needs something physical to take the shape of). We don’t need to rehash that. But as for the others…

Beverly is not afraid of blood, her fear is much deeper than that, blood is just the easiest physical representation for what she really does fear, which is her own womanhood. In one of MANY parallels between Eddie and Bev, both of their fears are based on gender and sexuality, and both fears exist, at least in part, because of their abusive home lives. Bev’s fear takes on the disguise of ‘blood is gross!’ but really it’s about puberty and menstruation, and what that change will mean for her sexually - because her dad never stops talking about how boys look at her, and what her role will be as a woman re: having sex with boys. And this isn’t the first time King has used blood symbolism for a girl’s fear of the sexual unknown - he did it in Carrie too (and lbr if Eddie and Beverly were fused together into one character, it would be Carrie and if Sonia and Alvin were fused into one character, it would be Carrie’s crazy fucking mother).

Next we have Bill, whose fear is pretty self-explanatory. IT always manifests as something Georgie-related for him, but what Bill fears most is not literally Georgie’s corpse, it’s Georgie BLAMING him for his death. Bill feels incredible guilt for what happened to Georgie, and feels responsible because he helped make the paper boat and because he was too sick to go out with Georgie that day and therefore could not protect him (this comes up again and again re: his insistence that Eddie not leave his line of sight like, ever, because he’s projecting his Georgie guilt). Bill actually comes the closest to ‘losing’ to IT because his fear is the most emotional - he almost gives in to the apparition of Georgie basically accusing him of murder, and would have, were it not for the other Losers (particularly Eddie) screeching that it isn’t really Georgie.

Richie’s fears are all based around movie monsters, but they’re a little more symbolic than that because of one small addition: Richie’s name being used repeatedly as a label FOR IT’s manifestations. IT also seems to talk to Richie more, because taunting him is more effective than just existing as a visual. On top of that, IT takes multiple forms for Richie, which is unusual. So we have three (unless I’m forgetting one) - the Crawling Eye, the Werewolf, and Paul Bunyan. The Crawling Eye is a movie monster that really freaked Richie out as a kid to the point where he’d have nightmares about it and wet the bed, and he has a lot of eye-related body horror dreams and it’s pretty gross… dreaming about eyes can symbolize needing to (or refusing to) look inward, and dreaming about something being in/hurting your eyes can symbolize being unable to (or refusing to) confront certain truths, or avoiding emotional intimacy. All of this can easily be applied to Richie, the King of Avoidance, and it’s particularly interesting that the Eddie is the one who injures the Eye, and encourages Richie to fight it too, and that Eddie is mentioned by IT later on in relation to the Eye (the SHOES THING also ties into the Eye whenever it comes up!). So there’s THAT. The Crawling Eye, imo, stands for Richie’s denial and emotional stagnation. 

The Werewolf is also a movie monster, and Richie was very effected by the plight of the teenage werewolf when he watched that movie - so it’s telling that when IT manifests as the werewolf, it is wearing a jacket with Richie’s name stitched into it. I know this has been said over and over, but Richie relates to the werewolf on some level because the werewolf is seen by its peers as a horrible monster, but it’s something it cannot help, and while it presents as ‘normal’ most of the time, when the ‘monster comes out’, it’s instantly ostracized from society. Richie sees himself as a ‘monster’ because he’s consistently treated as annoying, or ‘too much’, or borderline-suicidal to the point where he scares a lot of people off from wanting to get to know him. He feels guilty about being a burden on his parents, he hates that he constantly gets himself into trouble for things he can’t seem to control (undiagnosed and untreated ADHD, most likely), and on top of all that, he’s also hyper-aware of the dangers of ‘looking queer’ in public if he’s caught being affectionate with his male friends. There is a lot going on in Richie’s head that all point to him being very aware that he’s not ‘like everyone else’, but he can’t help it, so Richie sees himself reflected in the Teenage Werewolf… and IT knows that, and tries to use that to ITs advantage. 

FINALLY, there’s the Paul Bunyan statue, which involves a little more reaching to figure out, so bear with me if this sounds insane… Paul Bunyan, in a way, represents Richie as well. Richie is well aware that the statue is an attention-grabber, but it’s also kitschy and stupid looking - he himself describes it as having a ‘cheerful vulgarity’. It’s big and loud, but people hate it and think it’s lame. Richie wants attention, but he’s afraid of being Paul Bunyan - he wants to be GOOD at something, and get attention because of his skill and his humor, not just because he’s loud and ridiculous. He doesn’t want to be talked about as “horrible, garish, and unbelievably gauche”, the way Derry townsfolk talk about Paul. As an adult, Paul turns into the clown and has a literal, casual conversation with Richie, and then eventually turns into Buddy Holly - a musician Richie admired and related to, who died tragically young - only Buddy’s glasses weren’t his usual glasses - they were Richie’s glasses, mended with adhesive tape. So even then, he’s sort of seeing parts of HIMSELF in what IT appears as. SOOO LONG STORY SHORT, Richie is his own worst fear. 

Stan’s encounter with IT, I think, was meant to push the boundaries of what his  mind would accept as ‘real’. Stan’s whole worldview was based on order and a certain expectation of reality being… reality. So IT created a visual as ridiculous as possible, while still maintaining some level of offensive realism (by using corpses of real kids who drowned in the Standpipe) and creating a multi-sensory onslaught that Stan couldn’t deny - music, smells, visuals, etc. ITs goal wasn’t to scare Stan so much as break him, but Stan was able to ground himself in reality with his bird book well enough to escape. But what he takes away from the experience in the end is being offended by what happened. He doesn’t give a shit about being scared, he’s just plain OFFENDED by what he saw. So I think Stan’s kids-in-the-Standpipe experience was meant to just…. totally insult the way he sees the world around him. It’s also one of the coolest visuals in the novel and I will be forever angry that the movie changed his IT experience so completely. 

Ben’s IT encounters are SUPER typical… movie monsters, Halloween costume type of shit, like most of the other Derry kids who became ITs victims. The clown with the balloons floating against the wind, the mummy, the vampire… but unlike Richie, I don’t think there is much deeper meaning to it than just being your run of the mill scary shit, because unlike Richie, Ben doesn’t hate himself. Ben is pretty damn content with his life. He loves his mom, they have a close relationship, he doesn’t have any friends before the Losers but he wasn’t bent out of shape about it… he was fine with being alone, and just being a good student, a quiet bookish kid, and he liked buying candy and eating it in front of the TV with his little bathrobe on. Like, Ben was chill. He was confident in what he liked and what he knew how to do, he was a real ‘you do you’ kid. He wasn’t even THAT upset about being fat until other kids made fun of him for it. So Ben’s just going through life, more comfortable than the other Losers. He’s content with his gender and sexuality, he’s content with his skill set and his interests, he doesn’t care about how others perceive him, he’s adaptable, and he’s not plagued with guilt. So IT doesn’t really have a TON to work with, lmao. Movie monsters are all IT has at ITs disposal when it comes to Ben, and that’s all there is to it. And in general, Ben is one of the least affected by IT… he really doesn’t even seem that afraid of IT, on the whole, but he reacts most strongly to the things that sort of go against the laws of physics (the balloons moving against the wind, the Neibolt House seeming to change shape and size)… but even then, the only real symbolism there is that Ben loves physics and architecture. 

Lastly, Mike’s experience with IT is… interesting. I’ve talked about this a lot with @mikehanlonstan and we can’t really come up with good symbolism for the bird aside from the simple ‘he was attacked by a bird as a baby’ explanation from the novel. Which would be fine, if it weren’t for the fact that Mike’s dad… saw the same bird?? Like, what is it with the Hanlons and this weird bird? Who knows, I sure don’t. I was looking for racism symbolism but like… I feel like ‘It’s a bird… like a crow, get it?? Like Jim Crow??” is too lazy even for Stephen King. Also it wasn’t a crow, anyway… it was something that doesn’t exist in the real world, otherwise Stan wouldn’t have been able to get it to go away with his bird facts later on. If anything it just establishes a stronger connection between him and his father, and the long-term connection they both have to IT.

i was so so sad i couldn’t catch dpr’s set 😔 god la traffic is always so bad for what and i was looking forward to keshi as well but idk i was just so underwhelmed by the songs he played?? like i still enjoyed it but i think i was just disappointed bc i was hoping he’d play a song from his skeletons ep . speaking of hitc was the second time i got to see keshi live which was so surreal. that being said i’m really happy he’s getting sm more recognition he’s representing and making us viets proud!!! how close were u to the stages? i was more in the back in the first day BUT that kinda made illenium more enjoyable and i was close enough 2nd day i didn’t need to zoom in as much for joji :’)

literally not even a week after hitc i went to another concert akskdkdkf ok but this one was just absolutely insane and a completely different experience from the other shows i have ever been to since it was for a super popular rapper KAKSKDKDF me and my best friend were a double miniority being asian and girls surrounded by a bunch of non asian boys with a ton of sweat and bo 😭😭 i still had lots of fun tho like after i got out of the pit barricade and moshed outside of it. but out of all the concerts i’ve ever gone to seeing keshi back in 2019 is still the best by far i got to meet him and the opening acts take a pic w them AND one of them signed vans hehe i still have them til this day

it really depends these days. typically I usually sit down and actually write a few times a week for a good few hours, other days I’m just not feeling it, which I hate ugh

Do you have a routine for writing?

I wish. I do always need to have music or a tv show playing otherwise I go a little insane in the silence... and I need to be comfortable, very rarely do I work at a desk, rather the couch or my bed. basically it’s just hoping against all odds that inspiration will strike me

What’s your favorite kinks/tropes/pairing?

kinks: I assume this is sexual,so  in that case, a big one is just the unbelievable desire to be with someone that it completely clouds your mind and you need to do it now. also riding

tropes: I have a soft spot for strangers or friends to lovers, as well as just any setting where they’re my own age so it’s nice to relate. modern settings in particular (if the content isn’t already) and watch as they try to not fall in love. special mention for soulmate AUs!

Anything you don’t like about your writing?

pacing - at times I worry I’m either moving the story too fast or too slow, usually with my chaptered fics, but also with my one-shots sometimes. I worry I rely on dialogue too much and if readers would prefer more descriptive heavy fics? I try my best to keep situations realistic, but then again, I wonder if things are too.. happy all the time? and if some scenes I write aren’t necessary but I’m just never quite sure..

Now something you do like?

I... have definitely improved since I started writing 2 years ago. I realised I struggled with past and present tense and am now confident in catching my mistakes. I try to avoid repeating words to help keep up a nice flow, and also have stopped being scared of the word ‘said’ lmao. (basically, I’m still learning, and every day I write, even just a little bit, helps greatly. It’s definitely still a passion of mine and I hope I continue with it well into the future)

you were so confused to find yourself in a different classroom, in another country, learning in another language

even when you looked at the name portion of your soulmate’s notebook, it was in different characters so you couldn’t understand

from that point on, every so often, you would switch bodies with your soulmate to try to figure out who he was over the course of a few years

your friends suggested that you find his id to see his face at least

and when you finally did, wow, your soulmate looked like a B A B Y

but judging from the distance of his head to the ground, you gathered that he was tall

you also figured out that he lived in taiwan, which confused you because how were you guys meant to be soulmates if he lived in a completely different country and didn’t even speak the same language as you???

you shrugged it off, deciding that fate would work itself out somehow

eventually you saw his room growing emptier and emptier

luckily, it was your best friend, daehwi, who has known since the beginning of time about your taiwanese soulmate

one time, though, you switched bodies with guanlin during a basketball game for fun - causing his team to put him on the bench because their star player wasn’t doing his best like normal

to get his revenge, he switched bodies with you during a midterm and you wanted to kill him because when you returned to your body, you saw your test 

(you would’ve failed if the switching bodies lasted any more than ten minutes)

you got your test back - thankfully, you passed - but your teacher told you not to doodle anymore, smirking at you

not really understanding, you turned the test around to see the back covered with small little shapes and drawings

there were a few small hearts and words of good luck

and in the middle of it all was an “i love you!” written inside a circle

you were surprised - you hadn’t exchanged those three words yet, but here guanlin, the tsundere, was being soft and sweet

you ran out of class to find him and say it back, but he was already waiting outside

“i love you too!”

he smiled and hugged you, “i know you do”

“how could i not love my swaggy rapper?”

his smile dropped, 

“ok i take it back, let’s break up”

“nope, you’re stuck with me for life”
