Some details for archaeology nerds (Here we go again AHAHAHA)

First of all the costume Alfred wears in this pic is BY NO MEANS historical accurate, but if we really want to be 100% accurate then to my knowledge there’s a high chance that Alfred wouldn’t be wearing dresses gowns at all (whoever decided to make Alfred wear those pretty cough dresses cough in the show I wish your family to prosper for all eternity YOU’RE A HERO), so instead I just chose to design whatever clothes I want and add some Anglo-Saxon elements in it :)

1. Alfred’s earrings

Took inspiration from the 7th century Anglo-Saxon/Frankish crystal ball, now in Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Here’s the thing, I know English men (and the monarchs) don’t wear earrings until the 16th century and earrings weren’t even popular during the Anglo-Saxon period, but once I saw Charles I wearing pearl earrings in his portrait I just can’t help but put something pretty on Alfred’s ears as well lol…Sadly I can’t find the exact size of this one but the official site says that it was used as a pendant/an amulet! Probably for pagan practices though, but it’s pretty, isn’t it? :D

2. Patterns on Alfred’s gown

Taken from the patterns on the Bewcastle Cross in Cumbria (which used to belong to Northumbria, built in around the 7th to early 8th century, aka the period Bede lived in.

3. The woven band

The pattern is taken from the Laceby band found in Laceby, Lincolnshire, dated to early 7th century. It seems both Scandinavians and Anglo-Saxons enjoy wearing tablet-woven bands? Saw this kind of things a lot in viking clothes reconstruction as well.

4. …Whatever this is

From fol. 34r in Book of Kells, the famous Celtic gospel book completed in Ireland circa 800 AD. As you can see I got lazy during drawing this lol but the illustrations in the original manuscripts are really impressive!

This is the only thing I’m gonna say about this, but yes, this post is about the Neil Gaiman allegations. Before I write my actual post, I’d like to say that my heart is with the victims and the victims only. I hope they receive both the support and justice they deserve.

Ok. Can we please stop attacking each other? People who are discrediting the stories of the women involved should stop, because surely they can see how the narratives they’re pushing are not only unhelpful but actively harmful. There really shouldn’t be “sides” here, because none us are involved in this situation, but it’s insane to me that some people have been so quick to completely dismiss the stories of each woman. People you like can be shitty.

However, everyone saying I told you so? That is equally NOT helpful. You’re not morally superior for disliking Neil Gaiman first, and again, the narrative that people “should’ve known better” is actively harmful for victims of SA.

In continuation, people are allowed to be upset that a work they’ve found solace in turns out to be created by someone accused of SA. I agree that this shouldn’t overshadow the emotional impact on the woman actually involved in the situation, but people expressing their own feelings about personal links to his work is not harming anyone, and shutting people down for doing that is once again NOT helpful.

I doubt I can seperate the art from the artist in this case, but those are my individual feelings. If someone doesn’t want to read his work anymore, that’s fine. If someone does, that’s also fine. Stop attacking each other, because like I said, the victims need to be put first, and forcing people to cut ties or not with Gaiman’s WORK isn’t doing anything constructive.

Now, in light of what I’ve just said I want to share two things (these are potentially triggering so please feel free to skip):

1. I was sexually assaulted in November last year by someone who I trusted, looked up to, loved, and I am still dealing with the consequences.

2. Do you know what novel helped me through this experience? Neil Gaiman’s “The Ocean at the End of the Lane.”

That book became very impactful in my life, very recently. So yes, as I said, I doubt I’ll be able to have the same relationship with it, or with Gaiman’s work, but I’m sure it’s pretty obvious that this whole thing has brought stuff up for me.

There are people like me all across various fandoms conected to Neil Gaiman. Stop assuming that you’re helping victims of SA by telling us we can’t feel upset because the work we found safety in was created by a man accused of the very thing that hurt us. You’re not helping.

I apologise of this post came across as irritated, or superior, because that’s really not my intention. I’m just saying there’s nuance here, and we should all think before we post. I’m just feeling pretty tired of all this “discourse” I keep seeing, and it’s distracting us from actual issues that we as a society need to be addressing.

To summarise, stop attacking one another. We should be supporting each other and the women involved.

I’m gonna be honest. There’s nothing more demotivating to me as an Indigenous artist then seeing the way Indigenous ppl get treated for speaking out about racism and cultural appropriation.

It always feels nice when I get fellow Indigenous ppl telling me how they appreciate my work, so you can see what a blow to the face it is to see a fellow Indigenous artist say “hey, please don’t treat our culture and sacred objects as a costume piece” and watch in real time as hundreds of non-indigenous people emerge from the woodworks to insult them, belittle them, and worse.

It makes me so tired and sometimes I honestly have considered not posting my formline artwork publicly online because of how tiring it is seeing non-native people go out of their way to belittle native people and their culture. It feels exhausting to present my artwork and realize that a lot of people will only see it as an aesthetic or commodity at best, and will belittle me for caring about issues that impact my culture all while consuming it through my art at worst.

To see people who cling to the argument of “but it’s APPRECIATING your culture!” before turning around and calling us ungrateful or greedy for pointing out that consuming harmful stereotypes and closed practices or perpetuating appropriation is not appreciating our culture.

I always feel happy when people leave their compliments and thoughts on my formline art, but just seeing all of this negativity towards Indigenous people just for saying “hey, please don’t treat us like a costume” is just. Demotivating to me in a way that erodes at my very being.

hiiii, sorry if this is a stupid question or something, but what is the Magnus Archives? Like, I get that it's a podcast thing (?), but is it like a story in a podcast? And what exactly is it about? :0 Sorry if that's a silly question lol

No stupid questions and it’s not your fault (I post a lot of about TMAGP and TMA so it’s understandable). It’s a podcast by Rusty Quill, Jonathan Sims and Alexander J Newall. It’s about this British company that records and archives all the strange happenings and it’s arguably responsible for the influx of audio fictions that has happened in the past 3-4 years. It’s entirely audio based but they manage to still tell an interesting story solely through descriptions and sound effects.

I would strongly recommend it to anyone interested in the macabre and scary, but I wouldn’t call it horror. More like horror adjacent. Its main structure is very overarching and slow-burny so it’s prone to theorising and ranting (especially on tumblr) which added to its fame.

I’m so sick of this phenomenon that’s been happening where I see people online equating what people write in fiction to what the author actually believes should happen in real life. Like it’s called FICTION for a reason…. It’s not real.

For example, a while back I wrote and posted a Gotham fic about the characters Bruce Wayne and Jeremiah Valeska. In the show Bruce is 18 and Jeremiah is in his mid 20s (maybe 24ish?) when they meet. Now I admit, in real life that age gap would be questionable… but guess what? It’s not real life!!!!!! I got accused of being a straight girl (which I am not) fetishizing gay men and advocating for PEDOPHILIA (?????) for writing a silly little fic (which was hardly even explicit btw). It is not that serious!!! They’re not real people!!!

I swear to god I could write a story where a character throws a baby out of a window and the next day there would be people yelling at me saying I’m advocating for infanticide and that I want everyone to throw their children out of windows.

It. Is. Fiction.

I’m gonna say it one last time (and I can’t even believe I have to say it at all): what people write about (and read about!) in their books, stories, fics, etc. does not equate to what people believe should happen in the real world.

Fiction is fiction and me writing about a healthy relationship between 2 FICTIONAL (and of age - so I still don’t know where the whole pedo accusation came from) characters should not have caused such outrage that I had to block half a dozen people and then delete the post I made promoting my story from all the negative comments.
