On Guru Purnima
Today is guru purnima, a day to recognize and honor our teachers, especially those in matters of religion and life. I’m sobered and grateful for the memory of the myriad people who have supported me, challenged me, and modeled for me new ways of being on my ongoing journey to becoming fully human.
I look back on my early years in appreciation of my parents, Roberta and James.
I look back on my school teachers, chiefly Mrs. Schow and Chef Lunkenheimer.
I look back on my martial arts teachers, chiefly GM Won Kim, Shihan Wells, Sensei Hayakawa, Soshu Shintaku, and Soke WineBrenner.
I look back my spiritual preceptors, chiefly Mr. Steve Klick, Rev. Sue Thorne, Wonji Dochong SSN, Rev. Cliff Kroski and Rev. Janet Sunderland, HT An Duc, HT Nhu Minh, Son Hae SSN, and Fusho Roshi.
Too I find myself grateful for the enduring wisdom and modeling of mentors like Rev. Al Henager, Rev. Vern Barnet, and Myoun Roshi.
None of us arrive where we are on our own. Our teachers and wayshowers, those people who freely give of themselves in hopes of our being able to push beyond even their limitations are some of the most important relationships in our lives. I’m exceedingly fortunately to have sat at the feet of some of the wisest people there are to encounter, and to have received their encouragement, admonition, and expectations. I hope to live up, even fractionally, to the potential they’ve seen in me, and to, more importantly, keep the wisdom ball rolling for another generation.
Bows upon bows 🙇♂️ 🙇♂️ 🙇♂️

HOW BRUCE LEE CAME TO BE A PART OF OUR MARTIAL ARTS FAMILY. AND THE PRACTICE OF “EVEN MASTERS HAVE MASTERS”
Bruce Lee was a student of the arts. And came to our Dojo to learn from my Master Professor Sig Kufferath. Because Professor Kufferaths Master was, Henry S. Okazaki. And Professor Kufferaths other Master was Aikido Master Soshu Koichi Tohei Sensei. Who was the successor to Morihei Ueshiba Sensei, the founder of the art of Aikido.

Hisui Sugiura (1876-1965) took an important role in the earliest days of Japanese graphic design. He actively promoted Zuan design plans in his publications co-authored with Soshu Watanabe (1890-1986): “Zuan no Bigaku (Aesthetics of Zuan)” and “Jitsuyo Zuan Shiryo Taisei (Compilation of practical Zuan materials)” and was engaged in Zuan education as the first president of Tama Imperial Art School (now Tama Art University) founded in 1935. In addition to Sugiura’s representative works, such as posters for Mitsukoshi Department Store and various cover designs for books and magazines, the exhibition will showcase materials previously owned by Sugiura, including the French illustrated newspaper “L’Illustration,” the American graphic magazine “LIFE,” and his scrapbooks for the first time, so as to reveal another dimension of Sugiura’s creative practice as an “image collector.”
