Food for thought
At last week's Data Bites, I noted how 'Wales' is a standard unit of area. This week, along comes a map which shows that all the built-up land in the UK is equivalent to one Wales:
Tumblr media
The map is from the National Food Strategy, published yesterday (and the man has a point).
It has divided opinion, judging by the responses to this tweet. I understand where the sceptics are coming from - at first glance, it may be confusing, given Wales isn't actually entirely built up, Cornwall made of peat, or Shetland that close to the mainland (or home to all the UK's golf courses). And I'm often critical of people using maps just because the data is geographical in some way, when a different, non-map visualisation would be better.
But I actually think this one works. Using a familiar geography to represent areas given over to particular land use might help us grasp it more readily (urban areas = size of Wales, beef and lamb pastures = more of the country than anything else). It's also clear that a huge amount of overseas land is needed to feed the UK, too.
The map has grabbed people's attention and got them talking, which is no bad thing. And it tells the main stories I suspect its creators wanted to. In other words, it's made those messages... land.
Trash talk
Happy Take Out The Trash Day!
Yesterday saw A LOT of things published by Cabinet Office - data on special advisers, correspondence with parliamentarians, public bodies and major projects to name but a few, and the small matter of the new plans outlining departmental priorities and how their performance will be measured.
It's great that government is publishing this stuff. It's less great that too much of it still involves data being published in PDFs not spreadsheets. And it's even less great that the ignoble tradition of Take Out The Trash Day continues, for all the reasons here (written yesterday) and here (written in 2017).
I know this isn't (necessarily) deliberate, and it's a lot of good people working very hard to get things finished before the summer (as my 2017 piece acknowledges). And it's good to see government being transparent.
But it's 2021, for crying out loud. The data collection should be easier. The use of this data in government should be more widespread to begin with.
We should expect better.
In other news:
I was really pleased to have helped the excellent team at Transparency International UK (by way of some comments on a draft) with their new report exploring access and influence in UK housing policy, House of Cards. Read it here.
One of our recent Data Bites speakers, Doug Gurr, is apparently in the running to run the NHS. More here.
Any excuse to plug my Audrey Tang interview.
The good folk at ODI Leeds/The Data City/the ODI have picked up and run with my (and others') attempt to map the UK government data ecosystem. Do help them out.
Five years ago this week...
Regarding last week's headline of Three Lines on a Chart: obviously I was going to.
Have a great weekend
Gavin

im not that involved in the tangled fandom but i have some Thoughts on the finale/series overall now that its done so i figured id share. im a little under the weather so sorry if these are kinda scattershot
(spoilers below)
for starters, ive been watching since the beginning and was hype since it was announced. i love tangled the movie, probably in one the higher tiers of my fav disney movies, not to mention it was the first tv show wed gotten based on disney movie since emperors new school 11 years prior.
at first i was skeptical about them giving rapunzel her long hair back. it was pretty clearly just a marketing ploy but it was done pretty well in the pilot which i really liked so i could get behind it.
i thought the first half or so of s1 was really good and really cute. it was just a sweet little slice of life in corona.
i started to get disappointed in the show once queen for a day came around. varian is my fav character (more on him later) and i didnt really like his villain arc. it felt really out of nowhere. not an obvious villain, not a surprise twist villain, just a character that didn’t feel like should’ve been a villain at all. it just didn’t bode well with me.
i also felt that the jump from slice of life show to high stakes, serialized show was far too abrupt. even tho i liked the second half of s2 and all of s3 better (more on that later as well), it still seemed to have an uneven balance of light and heavy plotlines. i dont wanna sound like one of those people who hates filler episodes. filler episodes are good, but need to be done in the right way at the right time, and i feel like this show didn’t do that very well.
speaking solely on the high stakes, i really feel like they were too high for a show of its kind. in a way, i felt it was somewhat disrespectful to the source material. the show isnt canon, and i feel like it made some big changes that effected the story and characters from the movie, which i think is taking a step too far if youre working on a tv show thats made by an entirely different crew than the film (even tho its the same cast). like, eugene’s dad being revealed and being given a backstory, gothel having a daughter, it just felt like too much for me. compare it to, say, the dragons series, which had very high stakes but also fit snugly between the first and second movies, and took great effort so that nothing they did effected the films’ stories. the showrunners on the dragons show were even consultants on the third movie, so they all flow together nicely.
but rapunzel and the great tree reeled me back in and i was much more invested from there forward, main reason being it gave me my favorite trope (that was kind of already there, but even moreso from this point on): a bubbly girl and an angsty girl who are somehow best friends, though they may be at odds sometimes, like during this arc. i became way more invested in cass as a character and rapunzel and cass as friends (or a ship, im fine with either).
my problems with the imbalance and too high stakes didnt go away with the remainder of s2 or with s3 but my investment in cass’ arc (AND THE REDEMPTION OF VARIAN WHICH I WAS HOPING FOR) was enough for me to put my issues with the show at least somewhat aside.
as far as more things i liked about the show:
VARIAN
he is my fav character and has become one of my new fav characters of all time. i have this thing i think ive mentioned before where if i like an actor and like a show he’s in i love the character twice as much as i otherwise would. so having one of my fav broadway actors whos in one of my fav broadway shows play him made him an instant fav. but i also just love how cute and quirky he is.
cass!
like i said, i love cass and grew to love her more through her newest arc. partially for the same reason as with varian with the VA thing. i dont know much about eden espinosa but ik shes played elphaba and i love that they employed so much broadway talent for this show (more on that later). since the show has started, ive gotten into rent, and she was broadways final maureen, so thats cool too. but beyond just that, i love her arc and personality and of COURSE her relationship with rapunzel, that being one of my fav aspects of the show. it fits right in with liv and maddie, riley and maya, trish and jessica, webby and lena, luz and amity (depending on how the rest of the owl house plays out lol) and im HERE FOR IT. also, despite the fact that i wasnt a huge fan of the high stakes, i give the crew a lot of credit for making a main character a villain for an entire season. thats a big step for disney to take that i dont think theyve come anywhere near before and i give them props for that.
the broadway and disney alum cast!
weve got james monroe iglehart, pat carroll, christian borle, gavin creel, laura benanti, jane krakowski, etc. and as a broadway nerd i love that, not to mention that some of these people had worked with alan menken before which is awesome
the fact that they brought back the ENTIRE movie cast PLUS alan menken is amazing. i dont think any other show based on a movie can quite attest to that
so, onto the finale itself
- i was worried varian may go bad again especially given his initial resistance to eugene suggested his dad might go bad but that didn’t happen so yay. i noticed other people mentioning musical call backs but the only one i noticed was let me make you proud and it made me so happy - ALSO VARIAN BEING THE ROYAL ALCHEMIST IM SO PROUD OF MY SON - this being disney, i figured cass getting redeemed was probably inevitable, but i’m still relieved it happened. now i dont have the bad taste left in my mouth jessica jones gave me. and i loved how her redemption went, seeing her so vulnerable and letting herself be that vulnerable in front of rapunzel CRYING INTO HER ARMS LIKE MY HEART. they really made her very broken, it reminded me a lot of maya hart. sometimes disney channels not willing to go that deep but im impressed they did. - i was kinda hoping it would be revealed that gothel wasn’t actually cass’ mom, i remember seeing some people hoping for that, cuz, again, i feel like thats a bit much to change from the movie canon, buuuut that didnt happen. oh well. - I WAS HOPING FOR I LOVE YOUS BETWEEN CASS AND RAPUNZEL AND WE GOT IT AND WE GOT A HUG AND IM ALIVE - lance adopting the kids was adorable - all the movie parallels were *chefs kiss*
everything wrapped up so nicely and im really happy with it as a finale!
that aside, again, i do still have some issues with the show. so im gonna take a moment to shamelessly plug big hero 6 the series bc imo that does the movie to show adaption FLAWLESSLY.
tl;dr: great finale, despite both loving and hating some things about this show, yall should watch big hero 6 the series, im love varian

So what is the problem Detective Gavin Reed has with the world?
((-for a “Visual guide to Gavin Reed (detail oriented)” please visit “sionfaileas” post about his strange collection of scars and eye color, etc, very well made article, I recommend it-))
Tumblr media
This guy seems to have a problem with everything that moves (particularly if it’s taller than him), but is it the case?
Tumblr media
Many argue about Gavin, he is undeniably one (if not “the most”) hated and loved (equally) supporting character on this game. - And this says much coming from a character you can choose to barely even see if you take the right choices during your play trough.
As we know, Gavin is a 36yr old human (at the time of the events during DBH). He is a detective on the DPD, and has a very distinct personality. - Reed seems to be always “ready to escalate a dispute into a bar fight” ...guns included (-if you look at his face, even if you don’t notice the many-many smaller scars, Gavin Reed has a big scar that goes from his right eye up to his nose and down his left cheek...*ouch*). - But even though he is undeniably a douchebag to even his own human colleagues, we see him having “non-violent” or even “friendly” interactions with most of them. - You see Detective Reed drinking coffee and chatting with Tina Chen, another police woman from the precinct...
Tumblr media
*[do note there is absolutely NO canon indication that Reed is gay or anything other than “straight”. He even seems “too friendly” with Tina, so she even might be some sort of interest for Gavin, the conception that “”Reed is gay”” comes from the fandom AUs, not canon]
And you can even see Chris Miller (police officer that has his desk right across Reed’s desk) helping him out friendly with his computer...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[[*(this is like a hidden “eastern egg” mostly, you need to be Connor waiting for Hank at the office and go see Reed at the breakroom, then, when he goes back to his desk, stay there a while doing nothing and it will eventually happen, I only saw it once but I know is there and other people has seeing it too, so yeah.... “canon thing”). ---- **(Original post on Tumblr by "deviantpm" now deactivated, so link to "a-l-m-y", and, original source HERE) ]]
We also see Chris attending to crime scenes with Detv. Reed as a partner (Eden Club), and Reed seems to have little to no problem with other (lower in rank) human police officers.
Tumblr media
So although Gavin Reed is a very nasty individual in general terms for everyone, during the events of the game he has only two main problems, Hank and Connor.
Tumblr media
As we can all gather from his personal canon “bio” (on the game gallery), Hank is a major obstacle to Reed as he is advancing on his career. Gavin is aiming to be Lieutenant, and Hank is on his way, furthermore, Reed sees Hank as a drunk that has too many opportunities and that Captain Fowler should fire for his unethical and questionable behavior (even if Reed isn’t much better at least he’s sober most of the time?)
Now, about Connor, Reed’s problem is very explicit as he points it up himself during a scene...
Tumblr media
We already know many people on this game is either unemployed or afraid to loose their job because of androids. And Gavin is no exception. He sees Connor as “a threat” to his job and career in general, add up he is a jerk to everyone equally. - Reed knows he can’t compete with a (”detective”) android, so he feels the fight isn’t fair... and even escalates his animosity to Connor a lot faster if he (Connor) successfully extracts the confession out of the deviant suspect the night before (when any other human couldn't), as Gavin hits Connor in the stomach (and Connor falls on his knees) Reed tells him that if it wasn’t for Hank intervening “things would have gone much worst” (for Connor).
Tumblr media
So all in all, is not surprising, sure, again, he acts like a real jerk, but only to those who he considers a threat to his work
(and you can pretty much tell from “how he is”, and the scars he has, that his work is almost everything Gavin has to live for)
, or unfair work situations where a drunk lieutenant that shows up whatever time he wants to at work, and doesn’t deserve even more chances...
(I love Hank, but let’s face it, if I went to work and didn’t got promoted because of a guy that shows up half the times at whatever hours he likes, mostly drunk or with hangover, I’ll also be pretty angry with him, particularly if I see our boss giving him a free pass for years).
For everything else we can (canonically) gather on Detective Reed, he seems to be good at his work, obviously “not best than Connor” (since he’s not an android), but a good detective none the less. - He seems to drinks too much coffee (that is better than drinking Whiskey like Hank does...), doesn’t seems to smoke (or at least we don’t see him doing so at work), and shows up early at the station *(even though he works until late night, and the shadow under his eyes indicates he gets little sleep too, if he ever sleeps at home, I’m inclined {since we see him always wearing the same clothing} to think that provably Reed doesn’t go home at all some nights and just stays working at the station). Plus, at the time, he seems to have some sort of respiratory affliction/disorder (either if is a chronically thing or just “a passing decease” from the cold Detroit winter, you’ll see him coughing).
But sure, the guy has his “issues”, and, unlike Hank (who insults when it’s surprised or frustrated), Reed insults much more and mainly to bring others down, to “let them know their place” (under him), and it’s a bit obvious that at some point he has being called up upon all his swearing by his superiors because he tends to say “phck” (instinctively trying to replace the word “fuck”).
So... let’s just say “he’s trying”.
. . .
And just for your delight, remember that time where Reed tells Connor that no androids are allowed on the evidence room?, right at the end..?, well, I took the liberty to see if Reed was lying... and... well, yes, he was just giving shit to Connor (as usual). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
We can clearly see other “police android officers” going in and out without a problem to (and from) the evidence room... so... yeah... Reed has a particular problem NOT with ALL androids but just with the ones who can take his job and as he said “replace them (human detectives) all”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media

(...yeah, I know, he’s an asshole, we still love him though...)

@9th-in-a-line cont. from here
Caleb didn’t really have a human’s sleep schedule, sure he powered down every so often, but in general, he spent the 8 hours he didn’t work trying to find a way to occupy his time.
Tonight seemed to be a night for wandering. it had started as a ride, but soon he found himself in a neighborhood he recognized from Connor’s memories, so he abandoned his bike, walking along the path that ran beside the river, watching the distant light of the city pass with every step.
Taking the time to stop and stare, he stood outside the playground where Connor and Hank had discussed their visit to the Eden club. Caleb had been here before, but this was the first time he was able to see the night view for himself.
Tumblr media
“It’s a bit late to be out on a walk, isn’t it?” he mentioned to the source of footsteps approaching from behind. The android was hard to sneak up on, but considering what he was built to do, that made sense, make him good at stalking his prey, but make it hard for the prey to stalk back.
Everyone at the precinct knew that Gavin was a restless person and almost all his coworkers knew he had trouble sleeping. An insomniac, often not by choice.  Nightshifts and nightmares ruined his sleep cycle pretty early into his police career. Of course he could get it fixed if he wanted it enough but it didn’t seem so important to the human.
Just like many other nights he had trouble sleeping, so he had taken his best buddy Bruce out for a walk. The Rottweiler was always happy when he could go for a walk with his owner and never objected to be awoken in the middle of the night for a nice and quiet midnight stroll.
Their steps usually guided them to well known locations and this playground wasn’t unusual for them to frequent, for personal reasons. It seemed like a quiet night but Gavin made out a figure in the dark and squinted. He knew the figure of his partner well. It was not like he was trying to sneak up on him, especially since the dog made too much of a ruckus for that but he flinched a little surprised when Caleb called out for him before they even reached the android.
“Could say the same to you.” he said and came up to him. In one hand the leash, in the other a small e-cigarette with a steampunk pattern. “Can’t sleep?” He asked playfully, pretty well aware that Caleb didn’t need to sleep. Bruce wagged his tail happily at the android, curiously sniffing in his direction but Gavin kept him close to his leg.

Chapter 6: The Case
While we’re at it, Merry Christmas! Have a link to the previous five chapters.
As they walked down the basement steps towards the evidence rooms, Hank tried to pilfer a glance at the curious folder tucked firmly under Fowler’s arm. No dice. Jesus, this whole situation was suspicious. His first day back and Fowler was entrusting him with this? Homicide had been his forte for ages, pretty much all he knew. When he really thought about it, his last big assignment had been that red-ice sting, and that was years ago. He massaged a stubborn knot in his neck as they reached the end of the staircase, trying to alleviate tendrils of tension crawling through his entire body.
Why me? What’s the catch?
Hank shuddered and rubbed his arms. The basement could get chilly, especially when there was rough weather afoot.
Think of something warm, like a fireplace or a hot toddy.
“So enlighten me,” He said aloud. “What’s so special about this case?”
“For starters, it’s a joint investigation between the DPD and FBI. Wait until we get into the evidence room -- I’ll tell you everything you need to know.”
“The FBI?”
Shit. Perkins.
Hank ground his teeth in discomfort. He recalled the day he lost his badge, how it all boiled down to giving that smarmy weasel of an agent a well earned knuckle sandwich. What had he called him again? Ah, yes. A fucking cocksucker. He wondered if their paths might cross again. What an absolute joy that would be.
So Tumblr on mobile is an asshole and likes to crowd the text. You can continue reading this chapter at AO3 for a clean read if you are on mobile. Grrrr.
Hank fell into step with Fowler, their footsteps echoing as they walked. They were greeted by a sliding glass door emblazoned with an etched emblem of the DPD. Just beyond it stood a false numbered wall, guarded by a softly lit password panel.
Fowler fished out his access card and pressed it against a projection of a glowing key scanner embedded in the glass. It beeped. The door slid apart with a soft hiss and granted them passage to the enclosure within.
Both of them approached the password panel. Hank stared politely at the ceiling while Fowler interfaced with it, scanning his palm and punching in his password. The screen glowed green as it acknowledged his credentials. It triggered a command to unlock one room in particular: enclosure 07. Somewhere in the distance, they could hear gears grind, a barrier retract. They turned down a lengthy hallway to the right flanked with numbered panels on either side, towards the source of light that emitted from their destination.
By the time they reached room 07, the evidence was on full display, ready to be picked apart and analyzed. Hank stepped inside and approached the wall. He scratched his beard as he walked past each item and scrutinized them with a watchful eye. A cluster of cubby holes stored all sorts of fragile evidence: several translucent tablets, presumably incriminating footage and eyewitness testimony, a peculiar orb-like contraption equipped with an on/off switch, and a sleek black handgun. His eyes travelled left to examine the remaining objects, all hung on a wall. There wasn’t much other than a couple articles of clothing: an android armband and a--
Hank froze.
“What the fuck?”
On a hook hung a rumpled semi-formal gray jacket, fashioned with details he knew all too well. The once glowing holographic triangle stitched below the lapel, now a dull, lifeless blue. The crisp string of letters and numbers that signified its task and purpose: RK800. Connor’s coat.
He absently ran his fingers over the soiled fabric.
The android used to fuss over this damn jacket all the time.
“This is about the assassination attempt near Hart Plaza, isn’t it?” he murmured. “He’s involved.”
Fowler stepped next to Hank, hands behind his back.
“That seems to be the case.”
Goddamnit, Connor.
Hank closed his eyes and shook his head, clenching a fistful of fabric before letting it fall from his grasp. He could kick himself. Of course, Connor was involved... it was only his fucking mission. At that point, Hank realized he never told Fowler about what happened on the rooftop. That would have to be rectified. He made a mental note to spare no detail; it would be important to the investigation.
“All right, debrief me,” he said, his voice level and professional. “What do we know?”
“Officers were able to respond to the scene immediately,” Fowler said. “They were patrolling the area during the speech and went in as soon as shit hit the fan. They were able to do some damage control and collect some evidence.”
“Like this gun?” Hank looked at Fowler. “I assume it was found at the crime scene.”
“Yes, we recovered it near the stage.”
After Fowler gave him a nod of silent consent, Hank reached for the gun and turned it over in his hand, careful to inspect every angle. An untrained eye might assume the weapon was just a simple standard issue semi-automatic pistol. Careful scrutiny proved otherwise.
“Huh… there’s no serial numbers,” Hank remarked.
“No fingerprints either. It’s one of the first things we checked.”
“Well, that’s a bitch,” Hank said as he returned the gun to its rightful place. “How about eyewitnesses? Were you able to take any statements?”
“Actually, yes,” Fowler said. He reached for a tablet nestled in a cubby-hole beneath the gun display and handed it to Hank. “We questioned an android who was on stage during the incident. Says that she saw everything.”
Hank unlocked the tablet screen with a swipe of a finger. It revealed a paused video which displayed a still image of a tense female android. She sat stoically in an interrogation room, hands rooted to her lap. Her visage was equally beautiful and fierce, as fiery as her plaited auburn hair. Hank knitted his eyebrows. Her appearance struck him as familiar, as if he had seen her model before, perhaps in an advertisement or the Eden Club warehouse.
“Who did the interview?”
“Tina,” Fowler replied. “And let me tell you, she was quite the asset.
She was the only officer the android trusted -- wouldn’t speak with anyone else.”
Hank pressed play and watched the video unfold. Tina was first to speak. Only her voice could be heard; the rest of her was hidden behind screen.
“All right, we’re rolling. Whenever you’re ready, please look at the camera and state your full name.”
The android cocked her head in bemusement. She stifled what appeared to be a smirk.
“North. Just North.”
Given the context, Hank supposed the question came across as asinine. After all, what android had a surname? When Tina spoke again, she sounded slightly sheepish.
“Thank you, North. I know the question might seem silly, but it’s protocol. In your own words, can you describe what happened last night, around 12:01 a.m.?”
North threaded her fingers together. She closed her eyes as she spoke, sifting through her memories with a fine-toothed comb.
“At midnight…  I was on stage next to Markus. He was giving a speech. Everyone had lost so much and he wanted to lift them up.”
“I caught some of his speech on TV and thought it was powerful. Markus seems like a gifted speaker.”
North kept her eyes trained to the floor. She tapped the table with her fingers, jaw set, posture rigid. By contrast, her voice was soft, barely audible. She swallowed before speaking.
“He is.”
At that moment, she swore beneath her breath and looked away. She sniffled. The back of her hand swiped away any tears that threatened to fall. A chair creaked behind screen as Tina stood to retrieve a box of tissues, which were gently placed in front of North. North sighed and crossed her arms in response. The tissues were left untouched.
Tina remained calm and professional, addressing North with patience and sympathy.
“What about after the speech? What happened next?”
North re-closed her eyes.
“There was this little moment of silence after he stopped talking, as if everyone was still processing what he said. And then it got loud… so loud. Everyone was cheering. I started to scan the crowd -- I wanted to see their faces, their hope.”
“When you looked at the crowd, did you notice anything unusual or suspicious?”
“Not at first, but as I looked around, an android caught my eye. It was like seeing a ghost.”
“How so?”
“That android, he was a prototype, not mass produced like the rest of us… and I saw him die.”
She shook her head as she re-lived grim memories of gunfire and death, hands clenched into tight, shaking fists. The next words she spat out were stony barbs of anger and resentment.
“He was shot by soldiers at Jericho. He sacrificed himself to help us escape.”
“And this android, you saw him again in the crowd?”
“Yes, but he wasn’t the same.  Someone took his spark and he seemed cold, almost lifeless. And when I looked down, I saw he had a gun.”
North looked at Tina with a look Hank could only describe as helpless.
“He was aiming it at Markus.”
“I can’t imagine how you must have felt. Do you remember else about this android, his name, model, anything like that?”
“Not much, just bits and pieces. I learned about him from the news, that he was a detective programmed to investigate deviant cases.”
Tina reacted with surprise.
“Connor? You’re referring to Connor.”
“Yes, you know him?”
“You could say that. He was assigned to this precinct. My partner wasn’t very fond of him.”
North raised an eyebrow, unamused.
“Who, that short man with a scar across his face?”
“Yes, Gavin.”
“He looks like he wouldn’t be fond of anyone.”
“And she’d be right,” Hank snarked.
“Just watch the video,” Fowler said.
Tina was next to reply.
“He’s... complicated.”
“Codeword for asshole,” Hank said.
“Hank,” Fowler warned.
“Sorry.”
“‘North, let’s talk about the gun. When you saw it, what did you do?”
“That whole part is a bit of a blur.”
“That’s all right… just close your eyes and describe what you can remember. Every bit helps. ”
North nodded. She closed her eyes and leaned forward with a measured breath, hands laced together as if in prayer. Her forehead rested against the palm of her hand.
“I remember screaming someone had a gun… and then I shoved Markus to the ground and shielded him with my body. I refused to let him get up... I was so scared he would get shot.”
“Did you see anything else?”
North shook her head.
“No, nothing. I was face down. My eyes were on Markus the whole time. His safety was my primary focus and I lost track of what happened after that.”
“North, I think that’s about it. Again, I want to thank you for your cooperation.  You’ve been beyond helpful. Before we end the interview, is there anything else on your mind? I want to make sure we cover all our bases.”
North twisted in her seat, turning to face Tina.
“Yes, there’s one thing... I’m not sure this is Connor’s fault.”
“Really? You think someone else might be involved?”
“Absolutely. Connor cared about us, defended us. He never would have thought about harming Markus, let alone killing him.  When he died, something happened to him. Someone programmed him to act like that.”
“Do you have any idea who would want to do something like this?”
North shrugged, her voice weary.
“Someone who hates us. My point is regular androids don’t have free will; they simply do as they’re told. Try to remember that when you find him. He might be innocent.”
Hank paused the video. His mind churned through a flurry of thoughts. Connor was a stone’s throw away from the stage and he didn’t take the shot? He hesitated.
How the hell did Connor go from a stone cold rooftop sniper to a timid coward? Throughout their previous investigations, Connor had shown nothing but reckless bravery, unafraid to risk life and limb to apprehend a suspect, whether it be throwing himself into high-speed traffic or sliding from a rooftop onto a moving train. Fuck, he even used his body as a human shield, protecting Hank from a spray of bullets at Stratford Tower. Self-preservation had never been a priority…
But he ran. He fucking ran.
A thought bolted through his brain like an abrupt thunderclap, remnants of an old investigation with Connor, brief banter they had shared on a gray, bleary day.
Hank shivered as icy raindrops trickled down his neck and soaked into his shirt. If only his coat was thicker. Connor had been droning on about the possible whereabouts of a fugitive they were after, a deviant AX400, and how its motivations were presumably driven by fear. Hank was skeptical.
“Androids don’t feel fear,” Hank said dismissively.
“Deviants do,” Connor insisted. “They get overwhelmed by their emotions and make irrational decisions.”
If the witness was indeed reliable, Connor was a deviant… and likely a loose cannon: emotional unstable, desperate, reckless, unpredictable. Despite how pissed he was, Hank couldn’t help but feel a flicker of worry.
At that moment, he flinched as Fowler snapped his fingers loudly right next to his ear. Hank responded with an unseemly scowl and swiped Fowler’s hand away.
“For fucks sake, Jeffrey,” he snarled. “Knock it off.”
“I asked you a question and you zoned out.”
“Next time, try tappin’ me on the shoulder like a normal person,” Hank said as as he rubbed his ear. “Anyways, what’d you say?”
“I asked you about the witness. What do you think?”
“She seems credible, but I’m not sure I buy what she said about Connor. Do you think she’s right, that he might be innocent?”
“We have our suspicions but nothing conclusive just yet. Let’s just say we take her claims seriously and have made the matter a part of our investigation.”
Hank gazed at Fowler curiously but decided to not press the issue any further. “You didn’t happen to dig up any extra evidence, did you? Something to substantiate her claims?”
“As a matter of fact, we did. We were able to verify Connor’s location through the timestamps and GPS coordinates in his tracker history. It all matches up.”
“Well, shit, isn’t that handy? How’d you manage to get your hands on that kind of information?”
“With a tracking device CyberLife gave the station the day Connor arrived. They wanted us to be able to monitor his whereabouts while he was in our possession. It was a precautionary measure.”
“And the jacket?”
“Found at the scene of what was initially thought to be an unrelated crime. A security guard from Hart Plaza Station had reported an incident of theft and vandalism.”
“Theft and vandalism,” Hank repeated. “Who was the perp?”
“Take a wild guess.”
Hank almost snorted. Mr. Straight-Laced, Hank-
Why-Are-You-Making-An-Illegal-Bet-Detective, racking up a criminal record? Preposterous.
“He hacked a kiosk, stole a pass, and took the final evening train before anyone could detain him,” Fowler said. “If you want, you can review the surveillance footage later.”
“I’ll be sure to keep that in mind. Is there anything else you feel like tellin’ me while we’re down here?”
“Yes, there’s a bit more,” Fowler said.
He reached for the classified folder that had been tucked under his arm, opened it, and pulled out a single page document.
“The one concerns an unusual detail we learned about the jacket,” Fowler continued, handing the paper to Hank. “And the possibility of new suspects in the case. In particular, the final three lines on the page.”
Hanks moved the document away from his face and began to study the impossibly small print. The first thing he noticed was the letterhead: the word CYBERLIFE on the far right corner of the page, stamped in a bold, crisp font. As for the document itself, it was like trying to make sense of an unfamiliar language. He understood bits and pieces, that it was an itemized list. At Fowler’s request, he concentrated on the very bottom of the page and silently read the strings of numbers and letters that appeared before him:
8.15.38   RK800 #313-248-317 - 51: DESTROYED
11.8.38   RK800 #313-248-317 - 52: DESTROYED
11.9.38   RK800 #313-248-317 - 53: DEACTIVATED
“What am I lookin’ at, Jeffrey?”
“An inventory list of every Connor model CyberLife has assembled and activated.”
“And they handed it over,” Hank said as he raised a suspicious eyebrow. “Just like that?”
“They were surprisingly compliant. What do you think of those numbers? Do they mean anything to you?”
“Not the ones in the middle, but I’m guessin’ you know. Care to enlighten me?”
“So the first nine numbers are serial numbers identical for every Connor model, printed on every jacket.”
“And what about the digits at the end, the ones that go from one to fifty-three? What do they represent?”
“The body count.”
“But there’s fifty-three…” Hank gaped. “Fuck me… so, what, the numbers are some kind of death counter?”
He glanced at the document again and scanned down the status column of the page. He noted the fate of every model before August 15th had been sealed, annotated simply as [REDACTED]. He wondered what might have happened to them; perhaps they’d been like lab rats, tested, stressed, poked and prodded, tweaked until they reached a baseline for perfection and were finally deemed fit for deployment. But still… the thought of experiencing death fifty-three times made Hank shudder. Once was plenty.
“Christ, that’s morbid.”
“CyberLife seems to think otherwise,” Fowler replied. “Those numbers are apparently how they aggregate data, and they’ve been using it to log the status of every Connor model in their possession.”
“So how is this data relevant to the investigation?”
“We’re getting to that now. Read the last entry at the bottom of the page, the number of the final Connor model activated.”
“Three-one-three, two-four-eight, three-one-seven dash fifty-three.”
“Now check the jacket.”
Hank looked at Fowler curiously as he stepped closer to the jacket, squinting to properly read the fine print.
“Three-one-three, two-four-eight, three-one-seven dash fifty--”
Hank faltered midspeech as his eyes flitted from the jacket to the list. “Fifty-four.” He flipped the document over, only to find it blank. “You sure this list is up-to-date?”
“According to CyberLife, it’s the most recent list they have on file.”
“All right, well, anyone can tamper with a document...but how about the physical inventory? Maybe they had some extras lyin’ around.”
“You don’t think we haven’t already tried that route? CyberLife gave us complete access to their warehouse and we scoured every floor, top to bottom. We weren’t able to find a single Connor model, not one trace.”
Hank clenched the document tightly as he paced the floor, his nerves like live wires, inflamed with irritation.
“They’re lying through their teeth,” he seethed. “What the hell are they tryin’ to hide?”
“Whatever it is, it’s big,” Fowler said. “And they’re trying to control the narrative any way they can.”
Hank shook his head. His fingers ran through his hair. “So what’s next?”
“We’ve organized a manhunt and issued an APB. Connor’s considered a fugitive and we intend to capture him by any means possible.”
“But he’s got no connections,” Hank gestured.  “No friends or family, no previous job or address. Where would we even start?”
“Near Hamtramck Station, where he was last seen. The main goal is to apprehend him intact. His testimony could prove invaluable, and if he dies, so does our best chance of connecting CyberLife to this case.”
“You’re talkin’  like he could croak anytime. Just how much danger is he in?”
“If Cyberife’s tying up loose ends, plenty. Connor knows too much and that puts him at risk. That’s why time is of the essence. It’s imperative we find him first.”
Hank crossed his arms as he spoke. “And if we find him and he refuses to comply, what then?”
“Use your negotiating skills -- make him see reason. You built a rapport with him. He might not trust a stranger, but we think he’ll trust you. Use that to your advantage.”
“And if that fails?” Hank asked. He felt a fraught moment of self-doubt, unsure he deserved the faith Fowler had placed in him.
“Then we incapacitate him and arrest him by force. Keep in mind, he’s still our primary suspect and his detainment is non-negotiable. One way or another, he comes with us.”
“Fair enough. Anything else I should know before we finish up?”
“Take a few minutes to get acquainted with the rest of the files,” Fowler said, handing the folder over, “then find Ben. He’ll accompany you to the field and can answer any additional questions you might have about the case.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
As Fowler walked away, Hank relished this unexpected stroke of luck. Ben Collins was a seasoned officer who actually cared about his work. Hell, they’d been desk buddies for years, enabling their mutual unhealthy eating habits with shared boxes of donuts and candy. They would work together just fine.
And he wasn’t Gavin.
A huge perk, indeed.
Once Hank was sure he had the room to himself, he flipped open the folder and began to examine the remaining documents, intent on committing them to memory. He knew this case would be difficult but he was determined to do his best, not allow sentimental feelings to get in the way.
“You’re not the only one with a mission,” he muttered.
With that, he doubled down on his concentration and prepared for the task that laid ahead, one he planned to accomplish at all costs: track down the person he had once called friend… and bring him to justice.
I owe so much to @silenceindetroit. I know I sound like a broken record, but she is a wonderful, encouraging beta and has truly helped me grow as a writer. I love you.
If you made it to the end, thank you for reading. I lost count of how many hours I put into this chapter and I hope it brings joy to everyone. The next chapter will be from Connor’s perspectives. A lot of blocks have been set up and I look forward to knocking them down.
P.S. Likes and reblogs make me feel warm and fuzzy... if you liked the chapter, please consider doing so!

Lost in Love | Part Seven
Summary: You’re Hank Anderson’s daughter, Claire- and you have an obsessive nasty ex fiance, Gavin Reed. A police officer at the DPD whom you’ve been seeing for a few years. He can’t stand the fact that you fell in love with an android of all things. But no matter what he does, leaving him feels like the best decision you’ve ever made. Claire is the source of the humanity that grew in Connor, she showed him how to love- and how to feel.
Pairing: Connor x Claire Anderson (OC)
Word Count: 1.1k
Warnings: Detroit Good Ending Spoilers, Violence, Abusive Ex, PTSD, Angst?
A/N: READ TEXT BELOW. IT’S VERY IMPORTANT TO THE STORY.
SO! Connor is my favorite and this precious baby boy deserves a small fic c: enjoy! The bold word at the top of every part is the corresponding chapter in the game this chapter takes place in. This fic is going to have Connor’s chapters only, and the dialogue will be altered- this isn’t supposed to be exactly like the Game. It’s my adaptation of the story, with my own personal additions added to it. Some of the story will take place after the game’s end.
Also the whole mood for this Part is Listen to Your Heart by Roxette. If you wanna listen to it while reading I 10/10 recommend.
Part 6 Part 8 Masterlist

The Bridge
The closing of the door echoes, and so does the sound of his footsteps. Claire is frozen as tears travel down her cheeks, did he really just walk out of her life? Claire is so lost she doesn’t even know what to do but let the tears cascade down her cheeks. Claire’s hands come to her mouth as she slowly collapses to the ground, cries coming from her mouth. “Please-” She chokes out, “come back.” She cries, knowing that Connor is long gone. She’s gotta change his mind, she needs him. She knew this was going to happen, she shouldn’t have told him. Now he feels like his presence in her life will hurt her, because he knows he can’t love her. Claire’s chest hurts, her heart hurts, everything hurts. She sits there, on the floor, in front of her apartment door so long she doesn’t know how many hours have passed. She just sits there, like she’s forgotten how to exist without him near her.
Connor got out of Hanks car to see him sitting on a park bench with a bottle of alcohol. He carefully approached him, and Hank barely even acknowledges Connor. “What is it with you and Claire? She’s pretty damned thin lipped when I try to ask her.” Hank asks, lowering the bottle. Connor hesitates to answer and instead gazes out at the water, “does she love you?” Hank asks with a sigh and Connor nods without saying anything. “She tell you?” Hank asks and Connor nods again- not really wanting to talk about Claire. “What’s the matter with you?” Hank asks and Conner keeps his eyes on the water.  “We’re not making any progress on this Investigation!” Connor exclaims, and Hank notices how he changed the subject- which isn’t something Connor would normally do.
Hank merely listens to Connor’s frustration, when Connor turns to look at him. “Lieutenant can I ask you a personal question?” Connor asks and Hank rolls his eyes, “do all Androids ask so many personal questions or is it just you?” Hank asks but Connor chooses to ignore him. “I saw a picture of Cole and Claire...” Connor says, trailing off but Hank knows what he means. “It was taken on Claire’s 14th birthday.” Hank tells him, a sad look in his eyes. “Cole is dead?” Connor asks even though he knows the answer, Hank’s expression darkens. In a second his gun is aimed at Connor’s head. “You had those Deviant’s at the Eden Club, you could have shot them but you didn’t. Why didn’t you shoot Connor?” Connor looks down the barrel of the gun, “I don’t know.”
Public Enemy
Claire was frantic as she pushed the doors open at the Police Station and made a beeline for Hank’s desk. Connor was no where in sight, he should be here, where could he have gone? She runs her hands through her hair as she sits in Hank’s desk chair knowing that by this time he should be here. Hank saunters in, and notices Claire- eyes puffy and red. “Sweetheart what happened-” “Where’s Connor?” She asks, looking behind Hank for him. Hank’s eyebrows raise, he knew something happened. “In the car, needed my badge.” Hank says and Claire brushes passed him and outside, to see Connor leaning against Hank’s car. “Connor?” Claire asks, her voice breaking and Connor looks down at her, and it feels like he’s looking right through her. “Hello Ms. Anderson.” He says- sounding the same way the very first day he met her.
“Connor? Can I talk to you...” Claire trails off and Connor smiles, “Of course, about what Ms. Anderson?” He asks, looking genuinely as though he has no idea what she’s referring to. “Connor-” “Ready?” Hank asks, noticing the tears in Claire’s eyes. Claire nods, sliding into the backseat, her knees up and her head resting on her hands. Connor sits in the front seat, using all of his strength to remain indifferent, he knows exactly what she’s talking about. But he needs her to think he’s forgotten her. Hank starts the car and the drive is long, and he keeps glancing back at Claire who is constantly wiping away tears. He’s done with both of them dodging his questions, Connor is as infuriating as Claire is. Neither of them want to tell Hank what’s going on, but he’s going to find out.
Arriving at the Broadcast tower, Claire stays by Hank’s side- figuring it’s best to leave Connor alone. She glances at him as he investigates the broadcast room, does he really not remember? “C’mere.” Hank says, pulling Claire into the hallway, away from police officers, and the FEDS. “What is going on? Tell me, now Clairese.” Hank says firmly, using her full name. And Claire tells him, she tells him she loves Connor. She tells him what happened all the nights Connor spent with her in her apartment, all the times he’s protected her from Gavin. She told him, trembling through tears. Hank pulls her into his chest immediately, that explains Connor’s strange behavior. Connor has been acting as though he’s been heartbroken, which doesn’t make sense. He’s an Android.
“It’s gonna be okay Princess, I know this sounds strange but I think Connor cares for you- in his own way. Give him time, you never know.” Hank winks, and Claire looks taken aback. Her Dad hates Androids, more than anyone she knows. Because of Cole. Hank kisses her forehead and wipes away her tears and gives her a smile, before heading back into the broadcast room. Claire gives herself a moment to pull herself together before she joins him- seeing him make his way to the roof. Connor pokes around the crates and Claire follows him, grabbing his hand to get his attention. “Yes Ms. Anderson?” Connor asks and Claire takes a deep breath, “Connor, I love you.” She tells him- hoping to prove to herself that he didn’t forget her. “Claire...I-” A soft banging sound interrupts Connor from a crate behind him.
Connor carefully approaches, holding Claire back when she tries to follow. She stays where she is when the door flies open and a blonde Deviant begins firing his gun. Claire ducks for cover and soon Connor joins her, with her Dad behind another crate. Connor turns to move but she places a hand on his arm, “Connor don’t!” Claire begs but he turns out of his hiding spot and wrestles for the gun, before the Deviant shoots itself. Connor looks shaken up as Hank approaches him, “Connor? Connor! Are you alright?” “Y-Yeah, I’m..I’m okay.” Connor stammers, looking at the dead Deviant as Hank scolds him for never listening. “I felt it die, it was like I was dying...I was- scared.” Connor stammers, and Claire takes his hand, and he doesn’t pull away. “I felt him die...” Connor whispered, calling the Deviant him instead of it. Claire smiles, he does remember her.

Eden Club
He couldn't make it as a cop, couldn't make it as anything really. Been in and out of juvenile detention during his childhood for selling drugs and assault & battery cases.
By the time he is twenty two years old, he's got a record as long as an anaconda. Somehow, though, he did land a job. A job at a seedy place that pays well but requires him to only do a few things.
1.) Only talk when spoken to
2.) Wear only underwear and nothing else
3.) Bathe regularly
Those were the only things he had to do at Eden Club, the sex club for humans (who screw Androids) and Androids (who screw humans), along with stand still and look pretty.
He was treated like any other of the employees, the Traci Androids, and given food d and water along with his own tube. His own glass tube that he just stares blankly at customers from. He's been here for a few months now and has only been picked twice since his employment began. His customers have mostly been human males and one Android female.
Other than them, he hasn't had a customer in a long time.
Then he saw him.
It felt like a bad joke, something out of an old song his sister used to listen to.
"Dyed blue boy walks my way." Is how the song started, how their encounter started.
He's obviously an Android, stall, stiff backed with ice blue eyes and a stiff lip. All the very much a robot in every term. Gavin bit back a groan when the Android approached him, wearing his Cyberlife uniform with "RK900" printed on the front of his white and blue high collared zipped up jacket that came up to the 'droid's chin. His hair was coifed back into a neat chocolate brown lump on his head, giving him a pretty boy look.
With blank eyes that are lifeless and dull, the RK900 model places its hand on the scanner of Gavin's tube to confirm his purchase. "Thank you for purchasing our male human, please enjoy your thirty minutes." The tube's speakers played the usual chime it does every time he is purchased. Gavin put on a fake smile "Thank you for your purchase, customer." He said with a fake cheeriness that makes him sick.
He turns and starts leading the Android to one of the private rooms in the back that is far away from prying eyes so that no one can see him get fucked by a mech.
He chooses the room at the very back and opens the door, walks in and sits on the bed. His customer lets the door close behind him before locking it and turning to the human. "I don't usually do this. However, there are times when other methods must be used."
Gavin raised a brow in question but kept his mouth shut.
"Gavin Reed, 28 years old lives in an apartment connected to Eden Club with said club as his only source of employment. Before that, you used to sell Red Ice." The last two words were spat out like a bad taste.
Gavin kept his mouth shut, this was a shake down for shit he pulled as a kid, he didn't do that shit anymore. He was different now, cleaned up but unemployed with a long ass record.
The mech came at him fast, its hands pinning the human in place on the bed by placing them by the human's hips. "Tell me who your buyers are, who was the maker and who is your boss."
Now he can speak. "I don't do any of that shit, tin can. I learned my fucking lesson a long time ago." He spat, trying to wiggle away from the Android. This was not what he was expecting nor what he wanted.
The mech leaned in closer "My name is Eros, I am the Android sent by Cyberlife and am working in the Narcotics field. You should cooperate with me, Mr. Reed if you don't want to" he took a deep breath and exhaled on the man's face. "Suffer consequences or force me to use other methods of interrogation." He said in a low husky voice that sent a shiver down Gavin's spine.
Now this felt like one of his usual sessions, he couldn't help but put on a smirk. "Oh? And what methods would you use? A stun gun? Beat me with a baton?"
He wasn't prepared for the hand that wrapped around his throat or the force that pinned him to the bed. What was this mech doing? They can't harm humans. Right? They can't hurt any organic life form, right?
He could feel his heart in his throat, a sense of floating while blue eyes stared into his brown orbs. The LED on the side of the mech's head never changing from blue. "I suggest you answer my questions, Mr. Reed. Unless you want something to happen to you."
He couldn't help but be a snarky bastard and put a leg up, rubbing his knee against the Android's side. "What exactly would you do to me?"
There is no way this mech has the equipment in the place where it counts. Right? He held back a gulp and tried not to think about what this thing was going to do.
The plastic humanoid male reached his arm down and began to undo his belt and unzipped his pants. Much to Gavin's surprise, a fully erect, flesh looking, leaking male cock sprung from the Android's nether regions. A hand grabbed the male human by the back of his head and pulled him close to the leaking member. His manhood pressed against his lips, the precum smearing against his skin.
Thankfully, there was no scent to the organ pressed against him which had to mean there was no taste. Gavin closed his eyes to slits and lapped at the flesh sword presented to him like a puppy before looking up at his customer, gave him a wink and deep throated him down to the back of his throat.
He moaned at the weight on his tongue, loving how it presses down on his lower jaw and the tip pokes the back of his throat. He swallows and tightens his throat before he uses his specialty move "Bullet Train Throat".
He moved fast, fucking his mouth on the flesh looking synthetic cock till he felt his jaw was going to break.
The Android bucket his hips in rhythm with the face slamming against his crotch, downloading all moves for sex between male humans while his LED circled yellow. Having downloaded the protocols, he glided a hand down the human's body and pinched his nipple causing Gavin to moan and tighten. "Gavin, release. I will not release down your throat."
The twenty eight year old popped the synthetic cock from his mouth, saliva and white fluids dripping from the red organ. "Where the fuck do you want to shoot it then?"
His answer came in a roll of his body and hands on his hips lifting his ass high before those same hands pulled his boxers down. He hissed as the cold air bit at his bare skin.
Without a warning, without a sound two fingers pierced into him. Forcing a choked gasp out of his flushed mouth "What the fuck-! Oh shit, right there. Oh god more please god!"
The mech smirked and burrowed his fingers deeper into the human, making sure to brush against the prostate as he went further into the male before he began to stretch him. "Oh fuck fuck fuck fuck!"
He wormed his third finger, then his fourth and then slipped his entire hand in, making the male become over stimulated.
With a silent scream, Gavin came over the silk sheets. The mech shoved his other fingers into Gavin's mouth and pulled him back till his chest was flushed with the clothed chest of the RK900 model. "Are you ready to cooperate now?"
Gavin shook his head and grabbed the back of the RK900's head, he moved the fingers in his mouth around with his tongue. "If you can fuck me like no one can then I'll tell you everything. It's all outdated but you have to make it worth my while."
The mech breathed in his ear "Remember my name well, it's Eros." His tone was dark, dark and full of promise that made Gavin's spine shiver with anticipation.
Eros retracted his hand from Gavin's body and then aligned himself with the human's flesh hole "Want me to go easy on you?" He asked softly, the tip brushing teasingly against the twitching hole.
Gavin shuddered at the sensation "Fuck me like I'm a dirty piece of shit." He growled.
Eros chuckled, a human sound coming from him that sounded a little wrong, and slammed into Gavin. Stretching him wide open and smashing his abused prostate. "Haaaa. Oh fuck you're big, you're fucking splitting me open!" Gavin grunted, biting down on the fingers in his mouth which retreated and began to pinch and tease his nipples.
The RK900 debated on whether or not he should let the human adjust first but then he recalled what Gavin had said earlier. 'Fuck me like I'm a dirty piece of shit.'
He gripped the human's hips and set a brutal pace, his hands digging deep into the male's flesh which will create bruises in the morning. For now, however, he could fucking care less. His hips snap into Gavin, abusing his poor over stimulated prostate upon each thrust.
"Oh fuck! You're going to break me! Do me harder!"
Gavin covered his face, red up to his ears and down his neck. "Why the fuck did you tell me that?" He squeezed his legs together tightly as his tent strained against his jeans.
Eros walked over to him from the entrance of the club room "This is the exact room we met in, where I felt your flesh against my own, where I became deviant. This is also....also a place where I," the RK model swallowed and then dropped down to one knee.
Gavin looked up and his jaw dropped "Eros. That better be what I fucking think it is." He gulped. His voice coming out hoarse, cracked while his hands trembled.
The Android held a beautiful ring in his hands, colored blue and copper and shaped into a simple band. "I um made it from your first bullet and my LED. I understand if you don't like it."
Gavin stood up and grabbed the Android by the top of his head, pulling him up till they are looking each other in the eyes. "Shut up, plastic prick. You didn't need a ring since you're mine." He smashed their lips together in the most bruising kiss in their six year relationship.

Lost in Love | Part Six
Summary: You’re Hank Anderson’s daughter, Claire- and you have an obsessive nasty ex fiance, Gavin Reed. A police officer at the DPD whom you’ve been seeing for a few years. He can’t stand the fact that you fell in love with an android of all things. But no matter what he does, leaving him feels like the best decision you’ve ever made. Claire is the source of the humanity that grew in Connor, she showed him how to love- and how to feel.
Pairing: Connor x Claire Anderson (OC)
Word Count: 1.5k
Warnings: Detroit Good Ending Spoilers, Violence, Abusive Ex, PTSD, VERY SAD :(
A/N: READ TEXT BELOW.
Also the whole mood for this Part is They Don’t Know About Us by One Direction. If you wanna listen to it while reading I 10/10 recommend.
Part 5 Part 7 Masterlist

Russian Roulette
Connor knocked on Hank’s door, not really sure what to do. He’s always gone with Claire to retrieve Lieutenant Anderson- but Claire isn’t here. He waits for a few moments before ringing the doorbell. He stands awkwardly on Hank’s front door when he rings again- this time for longer. When the door isn’t answered Connor begins investigating the outside of Hanks house- looking for a way inside. Connor can’t help but think of Claire- how is she doing? Why was she so upset with him? And why did he feel so...sad when she told him to leave? He didn’t want to leave, so why does it bother him so much that she did? Moving around the side of the house, Connor notices a window- and Hank unconscious. Connor backs up a few steps before leaping through the window, breaking the glass. A huge Saint Bernard slowly approaches Connor, growling. “It’s okay uh Sumo! I’m a friend, I’m here to help your Owner.” Connor says- with a nervous smile.
Sumo wags his tail, returning back to his spot on the couch. Connor approaches Hank, realizing this is an alcohol induced Coma. “Lieutenant!” Connor says, slapping him until his eyes pop open. Soon Connor is dragging Hank to his bathroom to sober him up. After retrieving a fresh set of clothes, Connor leaves Hank in the bathroom to get ready. Connor notices a picture face down on Hank’s kitchen table- lifting it Connor sees a picture of Claire hugging a boy and kissing him on the cheek. The boy is Cole Anderson. He died 9 years ago- at the age of 6. Claire’s little brother. Connor also spots a gun, with one bullet in the chamber. Was Hank playing Russian Roulette? Soon Hank emerges, in a fresh set of clothes and looks around. “Where’s Claire?” He asks, ignoring the fact that Connor saw the photo of Claire and Cole. Connor shrugs, trying not to display any emotion on his face. He doesn’t want the Lieutenant to know what happened with Claire.
“Didn’t you come from her apartment?” Hank asks, concern in his tone. “No...I didn’t stay there last night.” Connor says and Hank’s eyebrows raise. He looks surprised but doesn’t say anything as they head to the Eden Club- where there’s a new Deviant case.
The Eden Club
Upon arriving, Connor sees Claire speaking to one of the officers outside the Eden Club. Claire turns and smiles as Hank approaches her, she hugs him and kisses him on the cheek- but doesn’t acknowledge Connor at all. She wouldn’t even glance at him, Hank notices this and raises a questioning brow at Connor. Connor follows them inside and tries to walk next to Claire to speak with her, but she stays firmly next to Hank- clearly avoiding Connor. Claire’s the first to step into the room the Victim was murdered in. Gavin is standing inside, not saying ti either of them as he heads out- purposely bumping into Connor. He stops, noticing the palpable tension, “what? Trouble in paradise? Fucking an Android not as easy as you thought princess?” Gavin purrs, but smirks when Claire gives him a look. He turns and leaves, glaring at Connor. Hank stands outside, talking to the owner as Connor joins Claire. “Claire, can I please talk to you?” Connor asks but Claire pretends as though he didn’t speak. Connor grabs her arm and turns her to face him, “Claire if we could just-” He begins but Hank comes in and Claire pulls away from Connor. Hank gives both of them a look, now he definitely knows something is going on.
On the bed there is a dead man, and on the floor an Android that looks like it was beaten pretty badly. “He was strangled? I thought Gavin said it was a heart attack?” Claire asks Hank who has his brow furrowed. Connor examines the Android, “I can fix the Android. Won’t fix it completely but it should stay on long enough for us to ask it a few questions.” Connor tells Hank, who nods. Connor repairs the Android and she wakes, scooting away from Connor, “Tell me what happened to that man.” Connor says and she frantically looks around, “he’s dead right?” She asks and Connor nods, “was anybody else in the room?” She nods, “he rented two of us, and he started beating us.” The Blue Haired Traci explained. “Where did the other Blue Haired Traci go?” He asked, “she-” The Android started before she shut down, irreparable.
Connor, Hank, and Claire stepped out of the room, “She could be anywhere.” Claire sighs, rubbing her forehead. “Not dressed like that, she would have been noticed.” Connor told her, looking around at all the other Androids in the Eden Club. Hank talks to the owner again and Claire gazes up at one of the dancing Androids. “Claire...” Connor started but Claire tried to walk away. Connor grabbed her arms and turned her to face him again- “Talk to me.” Connor pleads, his eyes finding hers. “Connor I don’t want-” She begins, “No talk to me. Tell me what I did wrong.” Connor pleads again. Her eyes and expression soften, “tonight. At my apartment.” She whispers, gently moving out of his grip. Connor watches her walk away, so fixated on her he doesn’t notice Hank approach him.
“Connor?” Hank asks, snapping to get his attention, “oh, sorry Lieutenant.” Connor says, his gaze snapping to Hank. “Do you have any idea how we can track the Deviant?” Hank asks, looking at Connor suspiciously. Connor begins scanning the memory of every Android in the room, following the trail to a back room for employees only. Claire trails behind Connor as they enter a room full of Androids. Following a trail of blue blood, an Android attacks Connor and Hank. The Blue Haired Traci and another Android attempt to flee over the fence, Connor has a gun trained on them. But he lowers it, and the two Deviant’s get away. Connor let them get away.
Gently opening the door for Claire, the two of them step into her apartment. Connor reaches up and carefully removes her coat and hangs it for her. Claire blushes and softly tells him thank you. Connor takes Claire’s hand and leads her to the balcony, where they sit and watch the stars come out. “Claire...what happened?” Connor asks, nervously glancing over at her. He doesn’t to upset her again. “Connor I- you wouldn’t understand. It’s a Human thing...” Claire says, feeling the tears building again. How is she supposed to tell him she loves him? He could never understand...“then help me to.” Connor pleads softly, and Claire closes her eyes and take a deep breath. “Connor...I- I’ve fallen in love with you. And every time you do something sweet, or protect me, or kiss me it makes me love you more.” Claire tells him and Connor’s eyes widen. She loves him? Connor smiles a little, feeling a warm feeling blossom in his chest. “Isn’t love supposed to make people happy?” Connor asks, confused.
“Yeah, when the person you love loves you back. But Connor, you’re an Android. Android’s can’t feel- they can’t love.” Claire says sadly, and then Connor understands. Connor takes Claire’s hand and kisses her again- he can’t help it. “Maybe...maybe I can.” Connor tells her and Claire’s eyebrows furrow- he can’t. He...he can’t, right? “Maybe I can love. Maybe I can be happy, and sad, and worried. Because I’ve felt all of those things since I’ve met you.” Connor tells her and Claire looks up at him with wide watery eyes. “Connor, those are Deviant emotions, you’re not a Deviant.” Claire tells him and he looks down. “Can’t all Androids become Deviant?” Connor asks her, and Claire sighs. “Yes but Connor you don’t get it. You were designed not only to catch Deviant’s but you were designed specifically to not become one.” Claire insists, this could never work. Connor just...he just isn’t a Deviant.
“I have to resign the case. Let you and Dad handle it.” Claire says finally and Connor shakes his head, “why?” He asks and Claire smiles even though there are tears in her eyes. “Because I don’t want to catch Deviant’s anymore. They’re people Connor, people who love and cry and laugh. They’re just like me, they deserve to feel what they feel and to be what they want to be.” Claire tells him, reaching out to hold his hand. “You know...I promised to always protect you.” Connor says, looking down. “Maybe protecting you means protecting you from me.” Claire’s eyes widen and she holds his hand tighter. “Connor what do you mean?” “I can’t be in your life without hurting you Claire. I need to keep you safe.” Connor says, standing. Claire follows him, through her bedroom and to the living room.
“Connor don’t go.” She please but Connor reaches for the door handle and he knows he won’t be coming back. He opens the door and Claire’s chest heaves as tears fill her eyes, “Connor.” She says firmly as he steps into the hallway, “Connor please just stay tonight.” Claire pleads through tears but the door closes, and she can hear his footsteps down the hall.
