Well, for any of my followers unaware -- keep away from Pixie and Brutus comics, and anything else this guy does. His comics are just the “tough guy / cinnamon roll” trope anyways, you can find the same dynamic in hundreds of other comics.

Regarding the Brutus comic, I read it (Muslim here, btw). Granted, I don’t have the full context of who Brutus is, but based on that post alone, here’s what I think.

Even if his intent wasn’t to portray all Muslims as bad people, HE DID THAT. Brutus says “there were [bad people], but we didn’t know if at first. Sometimes, they look and act just like everyone else, until they don’t.” And with the visuals portraying Muslims as the bad guys, it’s a grand, sweeping, HARMFUL generalization.

I’m too young to remember 9/11, but I’ve seen how my religion is portrayed. I had a good friend who I thought accepted me for who I was but actually wrote stuff against my religion online. I’ve seen how Hijabis are portrayed, what can happen to them, and the indifference in response. And it hurts me.

And for the creator to just brush it off as “if you thought I was portraying Muslims as bad guys, that’s on you”? That’s hurtful. He says there was no other ethnicity for these bad guys to be, and I don’t know the context, so I can’t fully dispute that, but it still hurts.

I don’t know. I’m definitely missing context. But intent vs impact is something a lot of people need to learn, and I feel like the creator of this comic ESPECIALLY needs to realize this. Despite whatever INTENTIONS he might’ve had, the IMPACT was Islamophobia

Brutus and pixie is a comic about a little kitten and a veteran war dog who’s retired and found a loving home. Brutus has fought in a war, has lost someone dear to him and that much was known from pretty much the start of the account. We just never knew exactly what happened until this backstory comic. I agree there’s some really bad generalization going on but I think what the intent was; that people can pretend to be good people while really being bad people. That goes for any person. That didn’t need to be muslim specifically.. But he did that and it’s not good. There absolutely WAS an opportunity for him to portray the ‘bad guys’ as any other ethnicity. He absolutely could have just done that. There was nothing else in the story that specified the bad guys were muslim, or arabian, or wherever this story took place. Even if he said he did his research. He could have EASILY prevented this and I doubt his research was any good either since he failed to tell us exactly where the sources came from and who those sources are. “I talked to some friends” isn’t gonna cut it.
