He shows her a photo first. It’s not the one that he ends up ordering, but it’s close enough; the same pleated skirt but the cut of the shirt is different, the colour scheme changed too. Max, half distracted by the sim race she’s trying to join, says, “This is of course very American of you, Daniel.”
“Yeah? Did you bring the ears from last year then?” He asks and makes her squeeze further into the corner until there’s almost no space between them. “Gonna be a kitty cat again, Maxy?”
“For this, I will need also the –“ she says after squinting at the screen. She claps her hands enthusiastically and throws them up in a high V, the controller left in her lap. “The sparkly things for my hands, no? I think this will be very important, Daniel.”
“I will get you some pompoms, baby.” He says, pulls her into a kiss when her hands still haven’t come down. “Maybe then you can do a little routine for me, yeah? Show me who you’re really cheering for?”
In the end, Max is let into the discord call and is allowed to join the race – even if she is away from her sim set-up. Daniel sits beside her and looks through uniform options, tries not to lose himself in the images of her on her knees, skirt spread wide over her thighs as she sucks his cock.
Max has a last-minute shoot with Red Bull, so he meets up with some of the others for a drink or two before the party.
It’s fine, if a bit uneventful. None of them has put much effort into their costumes. Alex looks great, but only when his girlfriend stays close enough to add complexity to the otherwise bland costume.
Max has been live blogging the shoot in their texts, another fluff piece to take the heat off Checo’s race in Mexico. And then at the end, sent just over an hour ago, a picture of the pompoms Daniel had made sure to order resting on a wide shot of Max’s thigh in the backseat of a car.
Daniel hadn’t replied, didn’t see it until now, but. He goes, downs the cup of shitty but expensive vodka and makes his excuses to Lando, who hasn’t stopped staring at both Oscar and Carlos at either end of the room like he’s at a fucking tennis match.
Max has her own drink in hand when he finds her, straw sucked deep in her mouth as she nods at whatever Charles is saying. Her cheeks are flushed, and she’s obviously having a good time if the way she’s smiling is anything to go by. She must know he’s watching because she turns to look at him, eyes bright as she waves the pompom at him.
She looks fucking amazing.
The uniform fits perfectly, and even with the sensible white long sleeve that she’s wearing underneath, she looks fucking hot. When it came in the mail, he hadn’t told her it was a Chicago Bulls costume; the ‘Bulls’ on her chest the closest thing to Red Bull he could find. But he looks at her now and thinks, ‘Maybe they should do a rebrand.’
She’s wearing the same sneakers that she always is, black and practical, and her hair is tied back in her usual high pony, only this time with a striped ribbon instead of a beige hair tie. It shouldn’t be as hot as it is, but Max has always been in a league of her own. In racing, in life, in Daniel’s heart –
“Hey there, pretty lady,” he says and leans in close when Charles has escaped with a choked-up laugh. “I would offer you a drink, but someone already beat me to it, huh?”
Max lets out a laugh, shakes her head. “We are of course not in Austin anymore, Daniel.”
There’s a smushed ‘3’ painted on her cheek in red; the font unlike what is usually used for jersey numbers, and instead oddly reminiscent of what it would look like on the RB19.
“Did you come here from the big game too?” He asks instead and puts a hand on her waist, his thumb poking under the fabric to rest against her skin. “Bet your team won real easy with all the attention on you, pretty girl. Hardly any eyes on the ball, I reckon.”
“Daniel! It was only golf with Checo. Always, he was very interested in the game, I think, but –“
Daniel breaks her off with a kiss when he cannot help himself anymore, pulls her closer to his chest for a moment before he steps back. “Did you come here with a boyfriend? A friend, maybe?”
Max stares at him, teeth biting into a lip that must have been painted red once. There’s still a bit of lipstick left, maybe there’s something on him now too. She must see something in his face, because she says, flushed, “Tonight, it is just me from the – the big game, of course.”
“Yeah? No quarterback waiting for you at home? I bet you looked hot cheering for your team,” he says, looks at the hand now wrapped around his neck, the pompom resting loosely against his chest. Max gives it a little shake over her head, the rustle loud in their tiny self-imposed space.
“It was a very lovely game, that,” Max hums, rubs at the eye black on his cheek. “The team, I think, is very good this year. We can of course win the ra – “ she takes a sip of her drink to hide the stumble, glares at Daniel when he laughs at her. “I can do the pyramid very well, so we will win the next match also.”
Daniel does want to hear more about Max’s ideas of cheerleading competitions, of the trophies and championships she would have won in that too. But more than that, he wants to drag her into the bathroom and make her come; fuck her open and loose so when they get back to the hotel, he can fuck her right.
“That’s your type then? Athletes?” He asks. He doesn’t kiss her, but he wants to, knows she wants it too. But they’re so close, almost there.
“It is very hot, I think, when they are also into the sport,” she says, her breath hitching when his free hand finds its way under her skirt, to the almost non-existent thong she has on. “When they are very good, I think that is very lovely also.”
“Do you have a favourite? Someone you’re just dying to meet, to fuck?”
Max whines softly, presses against the leg Daniel has shoved in between her thighs, “You are so stupid Daniel,” she says, breathy and hoarse. “You look of course very handsome in your little outfit, but always race car drivers are the –“
He kisses her, doesn’t let her finish.
They’ve strayed from the plan; from the loose script he had in his head. But Daniel doesn’t care, feels greedy with it that even in this – drunk and unserious as they pretend to be people they aren’t – Max still cannot pick someone else, someone who isn’t fully and completely him.

‘Looking for a change they’re not getting’ (Washington Post) The historic inflation that hit the United States and every other advanced nation over the past three years helps explain voters’ ire. But conditions in Erie—a bellwether county that voted in turn for Barack Obama, Donald Trump and Joe Biden—show how long-term developments also are to blame. The county has fewer jobs and residents today than it did in 2001. Though the 3.9 percent unemployment rate in June was lower than the national 4.1 percent mark, that’s in part because many people have dropped out of the labor force because of age or disability. The poverty rate is higher than the national average; a larger share of people rely on government assistance, including food stamps; and job opportunities for the young are scarce. Almost 1 in 5 Americans live in a “left behind” county like this one, according to the Economic Innovation Group, a nonpartisan research outfit. These roughly 1,000 U.S. counties grew their population and household income less than half as fast as the nation did between 2000 and 2016. “It seems like right now the whole country is looking for a change they’re not getting,” said Joe Sinnott, a Democrat who served three terms as Erie’s mayor and now heads the county’s economic development efforts. “They’re looking for a stability they don’t have and they’re trying these different ways to get it, to get back to the stability of the Clinton years or maybe even going back to the Reagan years.”
The Hotelification of Offices (NYT) Visitors to the Springline complex in Menlo Park, Calif., are surrounded by a sense of comfort and luxury often found at high-end hotels: off-white walls with a Roman clay finish, a gray-and-white marble coffee table and a white leather bench beneath an 8-by-4 resin canvas etched with the words “Hello, tomorrow.” Springline’s signature scent—hints of salty sea air, white water lily, dry musk and honeydew melon—linger in the air. But Springline isn’t a hotel. It’s a “work resort,” meaning that its office space designs have taken a page from boutique hotels. The complex is a 6.4-acre town square steps from the Menlo Park Caltrain station in San Francisco’s Bay Area. It includes two premium office buildings, nine restaurants, outdoor work spaces and terraces where people can mingle and connect, gym facilities, a high-end golf simulator, an upscale Italian grocery store and a 183-unit residential building. And like any good resort, it has a calendar of community events from craft cocktail fairs to silent discos. With an office vacancy rate at about 20 percent in the United States, downtown business districts are trying whatever they can to get workers back—including resort-like work spaces that match or surpass the comfort of their homes.
Protesters Are Converging on Chicago. City Leaders Say They’re Prepared. (NYT) As delegates arrived in Chicago on Sunday night ahead of the Democratic National Convention, protesters gathered along Michigan Avenue. On Monday, as the political show begins inside the United Center, demonstrators say they will gather by the thousands outside. And as the convention goes on, activists say, so too will the protests, every single day, showcasing divisions on the left during a week when Vice President Kamala Harris is trying to project Democratic unity and enthusiasm. From the moment the Democrats chose Chicago as the site for their nominating convention, it was a foregone conclusion that protesters would show up in large numbers to protest the Biden-Harris administration’s approach to a war that Gaza health authorities say has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians. The city has a long tradition of left-wing activism, and nominating conventions tend to attract demonstrations.
The Mennonites Making the Amazon Their Home (NYT) Groups of Mennonites, seeking inexpensive land far from modern life, are carving out new colonies in the Amazon. After weeks of living in jungle tents, the handful of Mennonite families trying to make a new home deep in the Peruvian Amazon began to despair. Wasps attacked as they tried to clear forest. Heavy rains turned the road to their camp to mud. Running low on supplies, some wanted to turn back. Instead, they worked harder and eventually carved out an enclave. “There’s a place here where I wanted to live so we came and opened part of it up,” recalled Wilhelm Thiessen, a Mennonite farmer. “That’s what everyone did to have a place to live.” Today, seven years later, the cluster of homesteads is now a thriving colony, Wanderland, home to roughly 150 families, a church—which doubles as a school—and a cheese-processing facility. It is one of a string of Mennonite settlements that have taken root throughout the Amazon, turning forest into thriving farms.
Ukrainian president says the push into Russia’s Kursk region is to create a buffer zone there (AP) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday the daring military incursion into Russia’s Kursk region aims to create a buffer zone to prevent further attacks by Moscow across the border. It was the first time Zelenskyy clearly stated the aim of the operation that began Aug. 6. Previously, he had said the operation aimed to protect communities in the bordering Sumy region from constant shelling. This weekend, Ukraine destroyed a key bridge in the region and struck a second one nearby, disrupting supply lines as it pressed the incursion, officials said.
Lawmakers in Turkey draw blood in brawl during debate on jailed colleague (AP) A brawl broke out among Turkish lawmakers Friday during a heated debate over an opposition delegate currently jailed on what are widely considered to be politically motivated charges. Televised footage showed Ahmet Sik, a representative from the same party as the imprisoned deputy, being approached and attacked by a lawmaker from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling party while speaking at the chamber’s podium. Sik had just called members of the ruling party a “terrorist organization.” In a subsequent scuffle involving dozens of deputies, a female lawmaker was struck, leaving drops of blood on steps leading the speaker’s lectern. Another opposition member was also reportedly injured. Physical tussles are not uncommon among Turkey’s lawmakers.
Thailand’s king endorses Paetongtarn Shinawatra as new prime minister (CNN) Thailand’s king endorses new prime minister. King Maha Vajiralongkorn endorsed Paetongtarn Shinawatra as Thailand’s new prime minister on Sunday, two days after her election by the country’s parliament. The daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Paetongtarn becomes the youngest Thai prime minister and the third of her family to occupy this position. Her government faces several challenges, including reforms of the economic and universal healthcare systems.
Chinese and Philippine ships collide at Sabina Shoal, a new flash point (Washington Post) Chinese and Philippine coast guard vessels collided early Monday near the Sabina Shoal, according to officials from both countries and security analysts tracking ship movements, opening a new flash point between the countries in their territorial dispute in the South China Sea. While skirmishes between Chinese and Philippine ships have been increasing across the South China Sea, Monday’s incident marks the first time the countries have clashed directly over the Sabina Shoal. China claims the vast majority of the South China Sea as its territory, although it has no legal backing to do so. Its claim includes all of the Spratly Islands archipelago. The Sabina Shoal, 86 miles from the Philippine island of Palawan, is one of the closest maritime features in the Spratlys to the Philippines. It is within the 200 miles that the Philippines considers its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Blinken pushes for cease-fire in his 9th trip to Mideast since war began (AP) U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken says now is “maybe the last” opportunity to reach a Gaza cease-fire agreement that would return hostages held by Hamas and bring relief to Palestinian suffering after 10 months of war in Gaza. Blinken on Monday was on his ninth urgent mission to the Middle East since the conflict began. His visit came days after mediators, including the United States, expressed renewed optimism a deal was near. But Hamas has voiced deep dissatisfaction with the latest proposal and Israel has said there were areas it was unwilling to compromise. The trip also comes amid fears the conflict could widen into a deeper regional war following the killings of top militant commanders in Lebanon that Iran blamed on Israel.
Kuwait, in grip of desert summer heat, announces power cuts after fuel disruption (AP) Tiny, oil-rich Kuwait on Sunday instituted rolling blackouts in several residential neighborhoods despite high summertime temperatures in the desert emirate. The state-run KUNA news agency blamed “a fuel supply disruption” for the blackouts, which shut down desalination plants and some power stations. The forecast high for Kuwait on Sunday was 43 degrees Celsius (109 Fahrenheit). Weather forecasters warned it could feel like 53 degrees Celsius (127 degrees Fahrenheit).
Former Saudi official alleges Prince Mohammed forged king’s signature on Yemen war decree, BBC says (AP) A former Saudi official alleged in a report that Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman forged the signature of his father on the royal decree that launched the kingdom’s yearslong, stalemated war against Yemen’s Houthi rebels. Saudi Arabia did not immediately respond to a request for comment over the allegations made without supporting evidence by Saad al-Jabri in an interview published Monday by the BBC, though the kingdom has described him as “a discredited former government official.” Al-Jabri, a former Saudi intelligence official who lives in exile in Canada, has been in a yearslong dispute with the kingdom as his two children have been imprisoned in a case he describes as trying to lure him back to Saudi Arabia. The allegation comes as Prince Mohammed now serves as the de facto leader of Saudi Arabia, often meeting leaders in place of his father, the 88-year-old King Salman. His assertive behavior, particularly at the start of his ascension to power around the beginning of the Yemen war in 2015, extended to a wider crackdown on any perceived dissent or power base that could challenge his rule.
Libya’s central bank ‘suspends operations’ after official abducted (Guardian) On Sunday, the Central Bank of Libya announced that it would be “suspending all operations” following the kidnapping of Musab Msallem, the bank’s head of information technology. It’s currently unclear who exactly is behind the kidnapping, but the bank said that Msallem and other executives had been “threatened with abduction” by “unlawful parties,” adding that it would “not resume operations” until he’s released. Last week, a group of armed men besieged the central bank’s headquarters in the Libyan capital of Tripoli, which local media said was an attempt to force the bank’s governor to resign. Currently, the African nation is still split by a power struggle between the NATO-backed official government centered around Tripoli in the west and a rival administration operating out of the east.
Trekking With Grandpa, Scuba Diving With Grandma (NYT) Rick Rhoads, 80, was “training like crazy” last spring, walking six miles a day—“all hills”—to get ready for his summer vacation. Mr. Rhoads, of Orcas Island, Wash., and Lucy Erent, his 15-year-old granddaughter, who lives in Prague, were planning to trek 85 miles in eight days along Scotland’s West Highland Way. Mr. Rhoads wasn’t daunted by the distance, or by the age difference. He said he was looking forward to continuing discussions the pair has had on video calls, on topics as varied as stage drama, cosplay, pandemics and family dynamics. “I’ll get her to do the talking when we’re going up hills,” he joked. When they finally did the trek, in early July, Mr. Rhoads said the adventure was challenging, but he was eager to do another, perhaps a route “that passed by cafes.” Sixty may or may not be the new 40, but it’s clear that many older adults are enjoying longer “healthspans”—the time they are active, fit and healthy. This shift is adding a new dimension to traditional grandparent-grandchild vacations: adventure. Think bike trips instead of cruise ships, wilderness treks instead of bus tours.

WIP Tag Game
Rules: In a new post, post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! and then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
Thank you for the tag, @mamuzzy! I've never played this game before but it sounds like a hoot.
Below are listed all the things I consider WIPs, but my brain won't let me write more than one thing at a time so most of them are technically just in the planning/vibes/one-day-I-will-write stage. But it's as close as I get so that's what we're going with! I may not have a snippet to share but I will happily blather on about each of them.
It's a mix of Star Wars and Strangers Things, and I've noted anything people might prefer not to learn more about. Have fun!

Lord Huron & Allie Crow Buckley Live Show Review: 7/28, Canal Shores Golf Course, Evanston
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
What is it with Chicago area weather changing the course of our summer festivals? While I wasn’t able to catch Kara Jackson again on Friday at Out of Space, as her set was cut and the bill moved hours up to avoid incoming storms, at least Lord Huron and Allie Crow Buckley provided the crowd at Canal Shores Golf Course a night of high and lonesome, Laurel Canyon-inspired Americana.
Tumblr media
The LA indie rock four-piece, who live expand to a sextet, most recently released Long Lost (Republic), in my ears their best album to date due to its embrace of a wider variety of genres--country, baroque pop, and psychedelia, to name a few. Those songs proved to have the greatest impact. The sweeping Spaghetti western stylings of “Mine Forever” radiated an effortless cool to match its romanticism. Miguel Briseño’s upright bass, Mark Barry’s clacking drums, and Misty Boyce’s church organ Mellotron buoyed Ben Schneider’s forlorn confessions on “Love Me Like You Used To”. “I Lied”, which saw Boyce fill in admirably for the studio version’s Allison Ponthier in a duet with Schneider, featured appropriately retro steel guitar from Tom Renaud, the song achieving the same levels of longing and regret as your parents’ favorite country songs. And chugging set closer “Not Dead Yet” was a fitting bookend to the set, considering Schneider’s joke that he received a text when he woke up that lightning would strike the stage at 9 PM, Back to the Future style. “It’s not usually how I like to get my prophecies,” he said, perhaps fully aware that the best Lord Huron songs can prove to be prophetic themselves. Case in point, the band’s performance of “The Night We Met”, as Schneider’s words of terrors and ghosts and hauntings were further soundtracked by the rumbling of nearby L trains--or was that thunder already?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Buckley, also beginning earlier than anticipated, performed songs with an appropriately languid pace for the hot sun. “Under the Sun” and “Moonlit and Devious” sported deliberate drums and buzzing guitars, respectively, operating at a twinkly sway. Her most recent album Utopian Fantasy (Nettwerk) is a collection of love songs inspired by mythology; notably, they’re defined by an expanded instrumental palate, shimmering synths and dance-oriented beats. Thankfully, the new songs radiated. The bopping “Angel” directly followed and contrasted the drippy “Cusco” and “As I Walk Into the Sea”. And “Dreamboat Soulmate” was a true standout; while the studio version emphasizes choral harmonies and a trip hop beat, live, the full band added the distorted guitars that permeated the performances of songs from Buckley’s back catalog. It was the most fully formed song of the set, Buckley and company at their most captivating.

Trends in Residential Real Estate in Dubai
Dubai’s residential real estate market is constantly evolving, driven by a mix of economic factors, demographic shifts, and innovative developments. Known for its luxury properties, the market is also adapting to changing demands, including the need for affordable housing and sustainable living. This article explores the latest trends in residential real estate in Dubai, highlighting key areas of growth, emerging preferences, and future outlooks says, Omar Hussain Chicago.
Tumblr media
Post-Pandemic Recovery and Growth

1. Strong Market Rebound
The residential real estate market in Dubai has shown a remarkable recovery post-pandemic. After experiencing a slowdown during the COVID-19 crisis, the market has bounced back, driven by increased investor confidence and effective government measures. The successful handling of the pandemic and the rapid rollout of vaccines have played significant roles in this recovery.
2. Increased Demand for Larger Homes
With the rise of remote working, there has been a growing preference for larger living spaces. Villas and townhouses have seen increased demand as families seek more space for home offices, outdoor areas, and overall comfort. Areas like Arabian Ranches, Dubai Hills Estate, and Jumeirah Golf Estates are particularly popular for their spacious properties and community amenities.
Shifts in Buyer Preferences

1. Focus on Affordable Housing
While Dubai is known for its luxury real estate, there is a significant demand for affordable housing options. Mid-income families, expatriates, and young professionals are seeking affordable yet quality housing. Developers are responding by launching projects that cater to this segment, offering budget-friendly apartments and townhouses in areas like Dubai Silicon Oasis, Jumeirah Village Circle (JVC), and Dubai South.
2. Preference for Ready-to-Move-In Properties
There is a growing preference for ready-to-move-in properties over off-plan projects. Buyers are looking for immediate occupancy to avoid construction delays and uncertainties. This trend has led to a surge in secondary market transactions, where investors can purchase completed properties.
3. Sustainability and Smart Homes
Sustainability is becoming a key consideration for buyers in Dubai. There is a rising demand for eco-friendly homes with energy-efficient features, sustainable materials, and smart home technology. Developments like Sustainable City and Al Barari are leading the way with green building practices and environmentally conscious designs.
Popular Residential Areas

1. Downtown Dubai
Downtown Dubai remains one of the most sought-after residential areas. Home to iconic landmarks like the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, it offers luxury apartments with stunning views and premium amenities. The area attracts high-net-worth individuals and investors seeking capital appreciation and rental income.
2. Dubai Marina
Omar Hussain Chicago: Dubai Marina is a vibrant waterfront community known for its high-rise residential towers, restaurants, and entertainment options. It appeals to both investors and tenants looking for a cosmopolitan lifestyle. The area’s strategic location and excellent connectivity make it a preferred choice for expatriates and professionals.
3. Palm Jumeirah
Palm Jumeirah, the world-famous man-made island, continues to be a prime residential destination. Its luxury villas and apartments offer private beach access, exclusive amenities, and a unique living experience. The area attracts wealthy investors and those seeking a luxurious lifestyle.
4. Meydan
Meydan is emerging as a new hotspot for residential real estate. Known for its world-class horse racing track and Meydan One Mall, the area is witnessing significant development. Projects like Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum City (MBR City) offer a mix of apartments, villas, and townhouses, catering to different market segments.
Government Initiatives and Policies

1. Golden Visa Program
The UAE government’s Golden Visa program, which offers long-term residency to investors, entrepreneurs, and professionals, has positively impacted the real estate market. The program provides stability and encourages long-term investment, attracting foreign buyers to invest in Dubai’s residential properties.
2. Investor-Friendly Policies
Dubai’s government continues to implement policies that support real estate investment. Initiatives such as reduced property transaction fees, flexible payment plans, and mortgage options have made it easier for investors to enter the market. Additionally, the introduction of 100% foreign ownership in certain sectors has boosted investor confidence.
3. Expo 2020 Legacy
Expo 2020, which took place from October 2021 to March 2022, has had a lasting impact on Dubai’s real estate market. The event attracted global attention and showcased Dubai’s potential as a business and tourism hub. Areas surrounding the Expo site, such as Dubai South, have seen increased interest from investors anticipating future growth and development.
Future Outlook

1. Continued Demand for Luxury and Affordable Housing
The demand for both luxury and affordable housing is expected to continue. While high-net-worth individuals will drive the luxury segment, mid-income families and expatriates will fuel the demand for affordable properties. Developers are likely to focus on projects that cater to these diverse market needs.
2. Integration of Technology
The integration of technology in residential properties will be a significant trend. Smart home features, high-speed internet connectivity, and tech-enabled security systems will become standard expectations. Developers will increasingly incorporate these technologies to attract tech-savvy buyers.
3. Sustainable Development
Sustainability will remain a key focus in Dubai’s real estate sector. Developers will continue to adopt green building practices and design eco-friendly communities. The emphasis on sustainability aligns with Dubai’s vision to become a global leader in sustainable urban development.
4. Rise of Mixed-Use Developments
Mixed-use developments, which combine residential, commercial, and recreational spaces, will gain popularity. These integrated communities offer convenience and a high quality of life, appealing to residents who seek a holistic living experience. Areas like Dubai Creek Harbour and Bluewaters Island are examples of successful mixed-use developments.
Omar Hussain Chicago: Dubai’s residential real estate market is dynamic and continues to evolve in response to changing buyer preferences, economic conditions, and government initiatives. The market is characterized by a strong post-pandemic recovery, increased demand for larger homes, and a growing focus on affordable housing and sustainability. Popular residential areas like Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah continue to attract investors, while emerging areas like Meydan offer new opportunities. With supportive government policies and a forward-looking approach, Dubai’s residential real estate market is poised for sustained growth and innovation.

63rd & Stony
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back in August 2021, the Obama Presidential Center began to take shape in Jackson Park.
Trees went down, fencing went up, concrete was poured, and the sound of construction joined the bustle of traffic on Stony Island.
At that time, I lived in Hyde Park and would return often to Jackson Park on walks to the Garden of the Phoneix and 63rd Street Beach or runs around the harbor and golf course there.
Tumblr media
You could see the area transform, and eventually, a tower began to rise — which will eventually house a museum dedicated to former President Barack Obama.
Obama Center gets fancy new granite cladding on tower
Tumblr media
Unlike the renderings that showed white or cream color, a grey marble is being installed.
The museum tower on the under-construction Obama Presidential Center campus is showing a little skin these days, as workers install granite exterior cladding that will eventually cover the 235-foot structure.
Tumblr media
“I’m just so excited,” said Billie Tsien, founding partner of Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, the New York City firm leading the center’s design.
“The building will probably top out in a couple of months, but they’re already cladding the bottom,” she said. “After all this time it is very, very exciting.”
The tower — which is about the height of the historic 16-story Monadnock Building at Jackson and Dearborn streets — will be the most prominent building on the 19-acre campus.
Even as it rises, the structure is visible from blocks away.
Tumblr media
And the swirl-patterned granite panels will contribute much to the visual identity of the tower — while perhaps adding color and life to a structure that appeared cold and mausoleum-like in renderings.
The renderings were made before the designers had figured out what type of stone would be used.
Mined in New Hampshire, the tower’s granite, called “Tapestry,” reads a bit darker than the cladding depicted on those widely circulated illustrations.
“Maybe in the earlier renderings it read pinker,” Tsien said. “I think it will read not so pink — but with creamy pink tones. It will be a deeper dramatic swirl of a dark gray and white and cream.”
Tsien said her firm and the Obama Foundation picked the Tapestry granite because “we wanted [stone] that has lots of movement in it. When it rains and the building gets wet, it becomes very dramatic — and [also] when it dries out.”
The granite panels are newly visible near the tower’s base, particularly on the building’s west side near 60th Street and Stony Island Avenue — although workers has been affixing the stone to the museum and the center’s forum and library buildings since November, an Obama Foundation spokesperson said.
The design team and the foundation considered other types of stone cladding before settling on the New Hampshire granite. Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects used gold Missouri limestone in their design for the 11-story Reva and David Logan Center, 915 E. 60th St., on the University of Chicago campus about a mile east of the Obama complex.
“We looked at lots of stone from all over the world,” Tsien said. “But the foundation believed we should look at stone from the United States.”
Tumblr media
Tsien says marble was ruled out due to Chicago’s climate.
And not without reason.
The Aon Center, 200 E. Randolph St., was famously reclad in granite during the 1990s when its original skin of Italian Carrara marble began to bow and crack.
The center’s forum and library buildings will be clad in Kitledge granite from the same New Hampshire quarry that yielded Tapestry, the Obama Foundation spokesperson said.
About 120,000 square feet of granite will cover all three buildings.
The cladding is expected to be done by year’s end.
Also expected to be completed by the end of the year is a 45,000-square foot sports and wellness facility called Home Court, located on the south end of the presidential center campus.
The building’s features include an indoor NBA-size basketball court and community spaces.
Designed by architecture firm Moody Nolan, the building will be heated and cooled by geothermal energy.
Built in historic Jackson Park, the center’s construction is scheduled to be completed by spring 2026.
The 44-foot display at McCormick Place was just a prototype for what will be an 88-foot installation inside the museum telling the story of the “Power of Words.”
Midway Plaisance Play Space View from Northwest looking Southeast.jpg
A universally accessible playground is planned for the east end of Midway Plaisance Park.
The plans still have to be approved by the park district board.
Other improvements include revamped ball fields at Jackson Park, as well as a new dog-friendly area.
Before heading to McCormick Place to see the prototype, former President Barack Obama will review interior designs of furniture, the retail store, the restaurant, the café and everything in between for his presidential center.
An aerial view - looking north - of the Barack Obama Presidential Center construction site at 6001 S. Stony Island Ave.
The signature tower at the Obama Presidential Center, under construction in Jackson Park, already looms over the community.
It will house the museum dedicated to the former president.

The Benefits of Professional Packaging Services vs. Self-Packing
A lot of work is done with the whole packing and movement scene. Before you move, the hardest job you need to do is packing. If you plan to pick up and move yourself, you will need to create weekly plans for the actual day of moving. You will need to purchase the packing supplies needed for this purpose along with taking all the old newspapers and cardboard on your back. But you have to come to terms with the fact that the whole task is tired of arranging all the boxes and tapes, etc., and you may realize that even if you collect a lot of boxes, if you really pack it, you must miss the boxes. Many boxes will also not fit the size of your equipment.
All of these factors make you rely on professional mechanics in Chicago for manufacturing packaging and shipping. Now you know why most people move companies rather than run on their own.
