Right, so. I got annoyed after seeing the list referenced in this post last night, told myself that my books are all packed up so I couldn’t do anything about it, and lasted all of a whopping 10 minutes before picking up my phone and attempting to make my own list instead. Behold, my from-memory attempt to present 20 books with strong LGBTQ plots, characters, and/or authors, that DON’T just rely on Suffering and Identity Politics and are... you know... fun.

Gideon the Ninth – Tamsyn Muir (Sequel: Harrow the Ninth) * the book cover says “Lesbian necromancers explore a haunted palace in space!” * that is exactly what you get * slow-burn enemies-to-lovers F/F main romance * I cannot describe this book, it is dark, genre-bendy, science fiction-y, Hunger-Games-with-lesbian-necromancers-in space? Kinda? I have literally never read anything like it * also fucking HILARIOUS

5. One Last Stop – Casey McQuiston * queer author (who wrote Red White and Royal Blue) * bisexual fat girl from the South/lesbian-daughter-of-Chinese immigrants from the 1970s-riot-grrl main romance * time traveling mystery involving the Q train in Brooklyn (mentions Brighton Beach ahem) * magical realism * many more found-family chaotic queers including a trans Latino psychic and a Black accountant by day/drag queen by night and the mean little gay disaster who has a hopeless crush on them

6. Parasol Protectorate (series) – Gail Carriger * this is one of my favorite series, and there are five books: Soulless, Changeless, Blameless, Heartless, and Timeless * steampunk vampires/werewolves late Victorian London, like Jane Austen crossed with P.G. Wodehouse (they are all fucking hilarious) * pretty much everyone is queer; we got your flamboyantly camp gay vampires (Lord Akeldama ftw!) We got your gay werewolves! We got your lesbian French inventors! We got your big disaster idiot werewolf main male love interest! We got your crazy adventures! Red White and Royal Blue – Casey McQuiston * you’ve probably heard of it but here I am reccing it again * the biracial son of the first female POTUS falls in love with the Prince of England; shenanigans absolutely ensue * yes, the British monarchy still absolutely sucks a big fat dick * hilarious, heartfelt, reads like fanfic, just go get it, it will change your life

9. Rosaline Palmer Takes The Cake – Alexis Hall * same author as Boyfriend Material, this is his newest * bisexual female protagonist * absolutely perfect satire of The Great British Bake Off (you can tell this man has watched EVERY SINGLE SERIES and all of the holiday specials) * sweet and surprisingly thoughtful

10. Starless – Jacqueline Carey * genderqueer/transmasculine main character of color * almost all main characters are brown people! * lush Middle Eastern/India-inspired fantasy world * gods, prophecies, monsters * the best Oh God Why Me I Am A Horrible Mentor wise-old-mentor

11. The Future of Another Timeline – Annalee Newitz * nonbinary (they/them) author * time travel but make it The Handmaid’s Tale * will probably make your head explode * feminist, queer, subversive * diverse characters

12. The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue – Mackenzi Lee * queer author * technically YA but historical/magical adventure set in the 1700s * bisexual disaster main protagonist and love interest of color * (mis)adventures across Europe * has a sequel (see below) with the badass asexual sister of the protagonist

13. The Hate Project – Kris Ripper * nonbinary/genderqueer author * M/M enemies to lovers/sex with no strings attached (spoiler alert: strings attached) * HECKING HILARIOUS * sweet, escapist, and very low stakes * diverse characters, including fat protagonist with realistic anxiety disorder

14. The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy – Mackenzi Lee * PIRATES, obviously * sequel to Gentleman’s Guide * asexual female protagonist * strong queerplatonic f/f friendship * more historical/magical 18th century adventures

16. The Library of the Unwritten – A.J. Hackwith * queer author * heaven-hell-Valhalla supernatural adventures * The Good Place x Good Omens x Lucifer x The Librarians * Pansexual Black badass female heroine * Queer found families * The Sassiest TM Bisexual Villain Turned Reluctant Hero (is he my favorite? Why on earth would you think that.)

17. The Priory of the Orange Tree – Samantha Shannon * epic doorstopper science fiction/historical fantasy set in a vaguely 16th-century world * main F/F romance between a queen and her sorceress bodyguard * sassy old gay alchemist whose backstory will give you Feelings * so many strong women and characters of color * no homophobia! marriage is fully gender-neutral, spouses are called “companions”

18. The Song of Achilles – Madeline Miller * likewise one you have probably heard of but still * a little light on the myth/historical part imho, but the writing is beautiful and will give you many feelings * M/M romance between Achilles and Patroclus  * reimagining of The Iliad (her other book Circe is also really good)

19 The Stars are Legion – Kameron Hurley * all-female apocalyptic space opera * messy messy antiheroines * grimdark war fantasy * queer sci-fi drama

20. Witchmark – C.L. Polk * author of color * M/M romance * main character is a veteran and a doctor dealing with his own hidden magic and repressed war trauma * gaslamp fantasy set in a world reminiscent of post-WWI England * strong sibling relationship

I’m honestly a little baffled as to why WLW Beauyasha shippers aren’t also upset over the handling of Beau’s crush on Jester. I get that they’re probably excited that their ship is looking much more likely to happen, but...

Don’t you love Beau and care about her feelings? Do you really want Beau to just “turn off” her previously established deep feelings without actually resolving them so that she can be with someone else? Doesn’t the “transferable feelings” comment make Beauyasha feel a bit cheap and forced? Aren’t you, as WLW, uncomfortable with a straight woman having her lesbian character brush off her “incomparable” love for Jester as lust?

I love Beaujester, but I will happily enjoy watching Beau and Yasha form the first PC gay relationship in CR—IF it gets the same care and buildup as Beaujester. I want to see Beau drunkenly ramble off a list of things she loves about Yasha with a cheesy line like being her beacon, not struggle to come up with anything more than “there’s something there.”

I want to see Beau and Yasha together because they develop a deep relationship, not just to pair the lesbians. I would think people who actually prefer their relationship to Beaujester would want that too, but instead there’s this pointless ship war going on.

We should really be standing in solidarity of wanting to see well-handled lesbian romance, regardless of which characters end up together. Let’s focus our criticisms on how the cast treat these WLW relationships in comparison to their straight ones, instead of on each other being more invested in different romance tropes.

(Which, by the way, is not the same thing as attacking the cast. No one to my knowledge has actually harassed Marisha over this, and people are allowed to analyze and criticize within fandom spaces—that’s what they’re for.)

We’re used to fighting over table scraps for gay rep. Having another ship block yours usually means that a straight ship is blocking a gay one, so we’re used to being on the defensive. But that’s not what’s happening here. Beau is a lesbian, and no one can take that away. We all love our buff blue girls, so let’s support each other in that love, yeah?

ok, so I hit 200 fics this year and I’ve done flufftober and robron and Robert week... so I’ve written A LOT and it’s hard to pick 5 favourites.

1) Meet the Sugdens Lesbian farm mamas ftw! The idea came from a conversation with the lovely @robandaaronsoulmates - an AU where Jack died in a car accident when Robert was a baby, and Pat ended up marrying Sarah and the two of them raised Rob, Vic, and Andy together. In this fic Robert takes Aaron home to meet his parents and I just had a lot of fun imagining what that would be like. Also I really love this universe so if/when inspiration strikes, I really want to write more.

2) Hospital reunion The perfect dramatic reunion robron deserve (and so do we). Robert gets stabbed in prison and Aaron drops everything to sit by his bedside and talk some sense into him so he’ll appeal his sentence. I spent WAY too long looking up how lethal stabbing injuries to the abdomen/kidney area are/can be... and the feds probably put me on some kind of watch list because of it. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out though.

3) Seb + Aaron + Robert One of the longest fics I’ve ever written and I’m kind of proud of it. I lost my motivation SO MANY TIMES while writing it, especially when it was getting so long - I was convinced it would put people to sleep halfway through. And that the narrative switching between the three of them would get confusing... But in the end I’m happy with the way it turned out and the nice comments I got on it. (also if you’ve left a comment on this or any of my other fics - THANK YOU! I don’t always reply because I don’t know what to say, but i appreciate any and all comments)

4) Social media 101 There was a lot of Buddie (Buck/Eddie from 911) on my dash this spring and it sort of inspired this fic. A tv show AU where not only the characters fall in love but the actors too. I’m putting this on the list because I had fun writing it and I was kind of proud of myself for the tagline “What do you do when your first kiss goes viral?” I’ve been meaning to write a follow up with the fallout - maybe in the new year.  

5 Five out of five stars Faith selling sex toys in the pub! It’s the comedy plot that writes itself! I think this came from a comment on how the women in emmerdale deserve better than the men they’re forced to date, and someone selling sex toys would make a killing in that village.

This was fun - but it’s hard picking just five!

At the cabin, the Local Teens ™ are adorable. Jack brings Eliot a ton of lore books from the bunker. Backpack Jack settles in and asks a succession of sweet, clueless questions

This segues into Jack hauling out the ol’ angel blade to teach these kiddos how to hunt, like ya do. We are SO worried for Eliot’s survival at this point

Boris: Hey Jack, if you wanna impress seventeen-year-olds then you should really just buy them beer. None of this weapon-wielding stuff

Meanwhile, Sam and Dean get themselves cornered by the Sheriff in the woods. Dean interrogates him about the monster

Back with the Local Teens ™, Jack starts using his powers to swirl the angel blade around and NOW WE ARE VERY CONCERNED

Jack accidentally stabs one of the girls NOOOOOOOO

He tries to heal her and I am very concerned

OH THANK GOD

She survived! Phew!

Jack gets spurned by the Local Teens ™ and has trouble understanding why he can’t hang out with them anymore

Welp. Cue Jack’s self-loathing arc. (If he can experience self-loathing on account of the ol’ soul.) (Boris: He’s a Winchester. Self loathing comes with the package.)

Over the commercial break, we discuss Cas and his approach to humanity and powers, versus Jack. Cas has a lot of experience backing up his choices, whereas Jack has been established this whole episode as being just a wee baby who knows nothing of the world

Back with the oh-yeah-there’s-a-monster-of-the-week, the Sheriff recounts his own experience witnessing the kohunta.

Backstory: the first white settlers encroaching on the land had a hard winter and the boy ate his family, then tried to eat the people of the local tribe. In retaliation, the tribe cursed him to roam the woods, hungry and monstrous forever. Cursed to eat other people, or else digest itself. They marked the forest to keep people out, the monster in, and starve the monster, but people forgot and...well...here we are some 50+ bodies later

(Boris: Oh hey a cursed boy trapped in a box, you say?)

The Sheriff asks why the Winchesters aren’t running around recording monsters and putting stuff on YouTube. Oooo, this is a great juxtaposition to the GhostFacers snark about the Winchesters from earlier

Sam insists that informing the public is a sure-fire way to see everyone dead. Intriguing

Our other troubled teen heads into the woods to hunt the monster. OH NO

You can kill the monster with a silver blade through the heart. That’s so common, Sam and Dean just have it in their back pocket!

Meanwhile, the whistling draws ever nearer. It is so delightfully creepy the way it echoes through the dark woods. And that still-as-a-tree trunk monster stalking! YIKES

This is a good monster fight with some good teamwork with the Winchesters and Sheriff. They stab it and the monster just melts into…stomach acid, I guess

“Whoa, that’s like full on Raiders!” Dean. Bean

Later in the Impala of Feelings… Dean questions Sam’s suggestion to the Sheriff to tell the truth about the monster to his son. Dean thinks lying is the better approach but Sam pulls out the big guns. When they were kids, they lied to their dad all the time about how they were doing, just to make him happy. Let us all now fall into the quagmire of John Winchester’s A+ parenting feelings

Sam and Dean talk to Jack about how worried they are about his powers. They caution him against using them, and tell him they lied because they care, but they’re telling him now because...they still care. Jack stares into space, then promises not to use his powers. No "oops let me tell you how I almost killed someone” stories here. The music turns grim, so we’re all fine. Everything’s fine

Jack and his power play, Cas and the Empty, Cas and his secret trip to (as the next trailer showed) talk to Anael/Sister Jo, Dean and his denial… Anyone else get the feeling that mounting lies are gonna crush all the fragile peace they’ve managed to paste together?
