Blog Task 5
When my project first began it was looking at both mixed media and digital distortion. I started by looking at digital distortion. I looked at artists such as Helmo, Jean Faucheur and Muhammed Faread. I found that using Photoshop to create distortion could prove effective but I also found that there were more effective ways when it came to using mixed media. This was particularly prominent when looking at development shoots of the Bête de mode exhibition by Helmo. By using both an acetate projection and lighting gels I found that I could create a better quality and more effective looking image.

Moving on from this I studied a few further digital distortion effects by looking at the laser cutter work of Jean Faucheur and the double exposure work of Muhammed Faread. I really enjoyed working in the style of double exposure and the images that I created came together really well and it gave me a chance to really enhance my Photoshop skills. However, I still found that I was missing something from my work and looking back decided that it was time to progress onto mixed media distortion. I wanted to be able to have a ‘hands on’ element to my work and I had really enjoyed the addition of different medias to my work in my first three initial explorations at the very start of my project.

The first mixed media artist that I looked at was Waldemar Strempler. He used both the art of collage to create his work. This really inspired me to try and incorporate his techniques into my own work. I found myself really focusing on colour, proportion and positioning when composing my images. I loved being able to physically distort and move the image to how I wanted it to look. I also took cut outs from magazines and newspapers to add more texture and colour to the collages. This artist in particular, gave me my first exploration into mixed media and I wanted to explore as many different techniques and different medias that I could.

Looking further into mixed media I gathered different ideas and inspirations by looking at exhibitions and on the internet through sites such as Pinterest and Tumblr. They allowed me to find artists, photographers and illustrators such as Louise Marie Jones (who works under the name of SparklyMouse) and Erica Del Maso. I found that exploring mixed media distortion has led me to look at not just photographers but painters, illustrators and graphic designers as well. It has opened my eyes as to how much different types of art can be intertwined.
Louise Marie Jones was a particularly favourite artist to look at. She uses embroidery combined with photography to create colourful intricate pieces. I really wanted to try and create a similar look to Jones in my own work as I think that her work looked unique and classic. I tried two different fabrics to create my work. I used fabric transfers to print my own images onto both silk and cotton. I think that of the transfers without the stitching the cotton images came out the clearest and looked the best. However, I liked the effect that the silk created as the fabric was thin enough to be seen though the fabric meaning that it could be seen from both sides.
I think that overall these images worked well and were a real turning point in my project. It really pushed me to explore different medias and work across different subjects such as textiles. It’s really opened my eyes to how different medias can be combined in effective and unique ways. I think that by using multiple coloured threads to outline the same feature gave the image real depth and distortion as it created multiple outlines of the same feature each being a slightly different shape. When it came to scanning the images in to create digital copies the cotton ones worked best as they showed real contrast between the front and the back of the images with the coloured thread being really visible. The slik ones however did have a great effect when on display as the thin fabric meant that you could see through the image creating confusion between the front and the back.

Trying to push my ideas further I moved on to experimenting with paint. I began by looking at Erica Dal Maso she is an Italian portrait artist who mainly uses watercolour to create her work. This really inspired me to attempt to combine my photographs with watercolour and to look at painting over the top of them. This was a way to really experiment with colour and see what different effects I could create by adding different strengths of colour. I found that the softer colours looked more effective as they didn’t overpower the image and you could see the original image through the paint. I experimented with different colours but found that pastel colours work better as they blend together well and don’t distract from the image but add to it.

Overall, I feel that the project is going well. I am happy with the current progress I have made to date. I think that there is a good base to work from continuing on with the project. The styles, techniques and colours produced by the various types of distortion, both digital and mixed media, have satisfied my artistic curiosity and I am both interested and looking forward to the following stages. I think that pushing forward I really want to focus on ways of displaying my work as I think that this is a crucial part of the process as a whole. As well as exploring further ways to distort my images I also want to look at alternate ways of displaying my images such as larger prints and different styles of books e.g. Japanese four-hole stitch. I also want to continue to develop my ideas by looking at further types if media such as acrylic paint, charcoal, and biro.

ARTIST RESEARCH - Louise Marie Jones (Sparklymouse)
Louise is a Birmingham based artist who focuses on hand embroidered illustrations, also experimenting with typography and abstract lines. She is inspired by beauty and uses the ‘right’ and the ‘wrong’ sides of the embroidery to show this. I would like to try doing this in my own work as I find it really interesting and inspiring to look at.
