New Storyboard is UP!!!!!

It's finally out! It was so fun to make. (Minus photoshop giving me hell on earth and crashing three times, pfft.)

I'm mostly satisfied with it in the end all be of it all, pfft! There definitely are some parts I wish were better, but next time, next time.

I think this is probably my strongest piece of story work for now, though! Which is awesome!!!

One of the oddities of storyboarding specifically because of when Trollhunters was airing is a bunch of them appear on instagram. They are still at the risk of being purged though they did to stick around which is nice. Rather low quality/fast speed and a few panels than nothing.

One of these has been Andy Erekson's Angor wake up sequence from Return of the Trollhunter. If you want to see them on there, you can find Part 1 and Part 2 through those links.

If you don't want to bother with that and want to see them in one go well with his site revamp he added it to speakerdeck:

It's sliiightly different from the final and when Angor still had his doofy little horns.

Hi Lake! I just started reading Heart Work and I'm in love. I've never seen a storyboard web series before either, how does drawing and posting it work compared to a comic? It's a really interesting medium that I'd love to learn more about, it seems like a great blend of comic and animation that would fit something I've been working on beautifully.

thanks for your kind words! :'0 i'd love to see more storyboard-comic series out there - storyboarding is often thought of as a pre-production process but imo it's such an efficient and engaging means of telling a story on its own.

i use the same program for Heart Work that i use for my storyboarding day job - Storyboard Pro - for all the drawing & art (but you could easily use any other program you're comfortable boarding in like Photoshop or CSP). to compile and post it, i export all the panels individually and combine them into a PDF in Adobe Bridge, and then upload the PDF to SpeakerDeck which gives me slideshow embed to put on the website.

in some ways it's probably a bit more labor intensive than comics but in some ways it's maybe easier. i try to add 2-3 panels of posing for each line of dialogue on screen so that you can tap through the embeds at a fairly steady pace, so there's potentially a heavier drawing load than for standard comics (though i definitely don't draw as clean or detailed as most comics). but i also find stuff like revising the art easier - with comics if a moment in the story or visuals changes it can affect the layout and art of the entire page, but it's very easy to edit/remove/add to boards.

sorry that may not be a terribly helpful answer! I'd highly recommend looking at story artists' portfolios too if you'd like to purse a medium like the one i use for heart work, since it's nearly identical to what story artists use for their portfolios!

Some of my favorite shots from my board I've decided to continue. (They're in no particular order, just my favorites, pfft.)

I'm kind of SHOCKED at myself. I got done about 2 1/2 pages of thumbnails today. Though, I'll probably only end up boarding 1-2 pages though for the sake of portfolio means. (No recruiter I imagine has time to sit through a 5 minute long animatic, pfft. Or flip through 200+ drawings on speakerdeck.)

BUT! I have a good feeling that this will be strong work for showing I can do action scenes. VN is still on hiatus for the time being, but I'm excited for this. I've always been super passionate about story work, it has been nice to come back to it after so long + be reminded of why I like it so much!

As a rule, every Monday a bunch of websites are checked for the Archive which is generally if new artwork has been snuck up on one that has done so multiple times, vimeo, artstation and speakerdeck. Usually nothing pops up which hey it happens! But just occasionally...

As chosen by yesterday's poll here is very unexpected additional work by Marko Bajic! This was the only Trollhunters addition in the form of Grand Theft Otto.

Look at this nerd. Only the second sequence ever to appear with Otto featured somewhere.
