At home I checked the mail, in hopes Summer had sent a carrier pigeon. I left the only things there: bills and junk with my name on them. I ran my fingers along my mailing label, and scratched the space where only my name was now. Autumn Spencer, last living trace of my parents, Grace and Ricky Spencer. I can just remember my father as unsettling warmth and tightness inside my chest. The most I know about him is he loved to do tricks on motorcycles. Before I started school, he was killed on one. My mother died early last year in my apartment, in a fog of gentle panic and mental slippage all the painkillers made her unaware of. She had come to live her last days with us. Then my sister went to the roof of our brownstone and no one has seen her since. I have no children. I will have no nieces or nephews. I am only 34 years old. Who will take care of me when I’m old? I climbed up to my hallway, and walked up two little steps to the very top of the building. I pulled back a peace-signed sheet across the rooftop doorway. I never liked that door, wood-paneled like a prop of seventies television. I put my palm to it. It was cold. A padlock and chains, screwed in separately from its original construction, were warm. The landlords’ gesture came after Summer disappeared. Why hadn’t it been there before?

Good evening everyone from the UK 🇬🇧 today I’m sharing the second shelf of my second bookshelf. These are all arranged alphabetically and are authors with the surname beginning with B. I’m excited about quite a few books from this shelf, including Speaking Of Summer by Kalisha Buckhanon and two John Boyne books that I haven’t read yet. Also on this shelf is Judy Blume’s latest release. The women is a goddess to me and defined my childhood. I’ve been too scared to read this so far, how silly am I? If you swipe, you can also see a candle that I keep on this shelf. This candle crackles when it burns and I find it very relaxing. Plus the smell of linen makes me feel as if I’m at home. 🥰 Have you read any books on this shelf? What did you think? I’d love to know.
