The short answer is, because I can. 🤷‍♀️ . The long answer is this: I wanted to add my voice to the conversation about race in America. I had something to say, so I used the tools at my disposal to construct a visual language to communicate how I felt about it. I knew I was taking a BIG risk. . For those who are new here, let me introduce you to #RacismIsASickness. It is a project featuring 14 Philadelphians who were interviewed and photographed by @iamtieshkasmith over a six week period during the summer of 2015. The goal was to create a shared visual language depicting individual struggles we all have with American racism. . In 2016, #RacismIsASickness evolved into an art installation that traveled to three venues (@west_philly_art_church :: @ccplibrary :: #philadelphiaethicalsociety), engaging hundreds of people. What have I learned since then? 🤔 . 1️⃣People don't take the time to understand things, they just react, criticize or outright attack you, often times, out of ignorance or discomfort. . 2️⃣That I'm glad I made the decision to incorporate masks and the upside down American flag into the images in 2015, because here we are, 5-6 years later, being asked to #wearadamnmask during a global pandemic, a groundswell of protests for AND AGAINST racial justice, police brutality, state sanctioned violence, an attempted insurrection, and governmental overreach/abuse/incompetence that continues to endanger millions of lives. The visual language of these images speaks to the circumstances we're living through, RIGHT NOW. . 3️⃣Racism is a big idea. Engaging in a national conversation about race, is important, but incomplete. We also need to hear from regular everyday people around this big idea of racism, even it what they have to say, makes us uncomfortable. . 4️⃣That what we are learning about COVID-19 and how it affects each person differently is an apt and powerful metaphor for how each individual experiences racism. . In short, the time is NOW to have a REAL conversation about racism.
