The Wand Focus: Shock has seen increased usage as thaumaturgy is increasingly blended with or come into contact with electrical components. Though initially made for combat, this focus is also used to convert vis power (albeit rather inefficiently) into electrical energy. The shock focus remained niche for a long time, but recent encounters with electronic equipped foes has caused rethinking of its employment in battle and further exploration into its utility. Its conductive effects can wreck havoc on electronic components or against foes wearing heavier metal armor. Specially trained Mage-lances, or Phonetix musketeer-sappers will employ this focus against armored targets, vehicles, or emplacements to devastating effect. -The Wand Focus: Frost can be enhanced down two primary paths, focusing the rather meek short burst of electricity it would normally produce, that in itself is not very powerful (but very painful) into more dangerous bursts or sustained damage.
-Chain: The first step down this path imbues bolts with extra perditio, losing the lightning's accuracy, but resulting in a more chaotic sparking effect between different nearby targets. This can easily cause groups, cavalry, or those inside vehicles to turn to painful disorganized messes that are much easier for allies to deal with, though there have been numerous reports of improperly calibrated foci or improper spacing to chain back into their own lines or even striking themselves.
-Lightning Bolt: Further developments into the shock focus have lead to a balancing agent being added to the crystal matrices to allow for ordo to flow through the focus as well to great effect. Not only does it stabilize the electrical flow of the bolt structure, but also increases its range significantly to even compare to Wand Focus: Frost in its capabilities. Though, this has also significantly decreased its rate of fire, increased vis cost, and has had the side effect of being near deafening for users and those nearby. -Channel: On the other end of the spectrum, a different line of thinking led to the development of the 'Channel' infusion, which generates an extreme electrical field around the user, to where nearly anything passing into the field threatens to be struck with continuous fire from the foci. Its usage is fairly uncommon due to risk of friendly fire and making it's user an obvious target, though for skirmishes or lone mages it serves as an effective means of dissuading melee combatants or being surrounded. -Lightning Ball: What prevented the viability of the Channel enhancement as that it required a largely stationary user, and close proximity to it's opponents. This led to the development of Lightning Ball, where a healthy dose of Ordo vis to stabilize the process allows for this orb orb of electrical potential to be released and sent down range (albeit slowly) to strike at anything it comes in contact with until expending its vis reserves or having its center colliding (which would unleash any remaining energy directly into the object it collides with). This enhancement has seen limited testing on the battlefield, and while it pales in comparison to Lightning Bolt's pinpoint usability, is generally liked as a crowd control measure and is light on wand wear and tear compared to other foci enhancements. Other enhancements include -Potency, which increases the electrical potential of its focus and therefore deadliness at increasing vis costs per level of potency applied. -Efficiency, which increases the flow-rate and channeling abilities of the foci allowing it to attack with less vis consumption, and slightly lower cooldowns per level of potency applied. -Enlarge, which will either further destabilize a chain lightning enhancement's bolt (allowing for it to flow more freely and strike more targets), or increase the radius of the electrical field of the Channel enhancement.

Dev Pipeline: Determined "Perfected" [Pt. 9]
One thing that still amazes me is the way that, after the whole process, the final iteration of Determined actually managed to fix all of the small compromises that I had made along the way. As I entered 2024, the game was hitting those original design aims more neatly than ever before.
Firstly, the puzzle-based design, combined with blorb-levels of precision in describing the dungeon rooms had successfully reduced the use of the "fortune roll" to a negligible frequency. I wasn't sure if it was safe to simply remove the die altogether, but it seemed unlikely that it would be needed under "normal" conditions.
I eventually removed both Vigour and Fatigue from the game entirely. Physical actions were now simply defined as "within" or "beyond" the strength of an avatar. There would had three defined states of health: "hale", "imperiled", and "dead". Harming and healing effects would move an avatar toward the dead and hale ends of the spectrum, respectively.
I had planned to trial removing inventory limits entirely, following the model of Into the Odd – but if that proved too generous to be fun, I had a back-up plan to establish a straightforward, 8-item limit instead.
I had established diegetic mechanics that rendered food, water, ammunition, treasure, fuel, and magical item charges functionally interchangeable. This effectively removed what, in my view, were the most tedious logistical burdens (and therefore also the biggest candidates for optimizing-out-the-fun).
I've only mentioned it briefly once before, but an earlier version of the game had also included the notion of item durability. That had been tracked using, of all things, the usage dice mechanic from the Black Hack. In the final version, items would only become damaged by specific effects (like the touch of a rust monster), and so that element of random chance was summarily purged.
Likewise, I had been using a system of wandering monsters inspired by OSR standards – but I replaced these with a stacked deck of encounter cards (some of them blank, to indicate that nothing occurs). Players would still be unaware of the pre-set card sequence, but different groups would be neither blessed nor screwed by random encounters.
No randomness. No GM fiat. No stats. Nothing to distract from the diegetic mechanics – from the diegesis. Total immersion. Now all I needed was to turn the crank; to write up the rooms in full excruciating detail and start stress testing the more dubious chamber ideas I had created.
But throughout it all, I had never quite recognized the inherent impossibility of what I was trying to build. The quadrilemma remained, still unnoticed after three years of work.

the overview
All right, so I originally reviewed this book back in October of 2022—the now first edition.
As a lover of magic-infused modern settings, this was an urban fantasy of weird pseudo-witches that tipped me straight into a gritty world of fame, fortune, and finding a name for yourself that I couldn’t help but fall for. I loved the introduction of Nikkeah as a cocky main character soaking up the limelight, his relationships with his siblings, his backstory that slowly unfolds alongside his current-day downfall, and his run-in with a certain Halfsleeper who I look forward to seeing more of in book two.
This version is a revamp, which ripped me from the high of finishing book 3, but oh man was it worth it.
So take a quick trip with me into an urban fantasy with a genderqueer main character, friction between casters and non-casters, tournament gladiator sports, and nefarious covens with ulterior motives.

The next step in his conquering the annual Invocation tournament, in which two dozen elite casters pit their magic and wit against each other for the chance at ultimate fame and fortune.
In the days before the tournament, Nikkeah’s magic is sabotaged under suspicious circumstances, trapping him in the threads of a dark plot that dismantles his glamorous life and sets him against his beloved city. Armed with little more than his outrage and wild Stormcasting, Nikkeah charges down the road to retribution. But what he discovers at the end may leave him with more questions than answers.
the characters
Nikkeah is an absolutely amazing main character. A genderqueer he/him Mx. icon who shines on the page even brighter than the first edition from his attitude to his gut-wrenching backstory to his empathy for the other characters he runs into along the way.
Micah’s role as mentor and coach was fleshed out so much more and was handled wonderfully as Nikkeah’s counterbalance. Seeing him care so much for his protégé was honestly heartwarming.
Gahera, Nikkeah’s older sister, is a gem, and I will always love her. We love supportive siblings in this house.
Vision. Oh, Vision, my precious Dreamer, I look forward to seeing more of you in the next releases. (Not me fawning over his page time over here or anything.)
The rest of the cast was balanced wonderfully, and while I’ve left out some key names, they absolutely stand out even sharper in my mind than before. I’m excited to see how vividly they’ll stand out on paper as the next volumes trickle out.
the setting
This was the piece that drew me to the book in the first place. I love urban fantasies that stray from the typical vampires, werewolves, and witches narrative. Honestly, dreampunk—as it’s described by the author—is the best name for it, since it weaves between realities in a world that feels like a futuristic take on Legend of Korra.
You have a bustling city; non-casters being Karens over casters using fire magic to cook their food at fancy restaurants; magical steroid usage in sports matches. It’s all got a touch of familiarity to it with distinctively fantasy elements that cause the right amount of friction for an amazing story.
the plot
The story itself deals with the rise and fall of Nikkeah’s fame through the unraveling of unfortunate tournament events and dips into his past, when he started his training to become a Spectrum champion. But that’s only where things start.
Because that also really heaps on that pressure to win, and when some of Nikkeah’s opponents turn out to have drugs in their systems, it seems like a play of desperation at first. Then things start to domino from potential scandal to scandal until much more ends up on the line.
The shift from Nikkeah’s teenaged flashbacks to his championship to the absolute mess of a situation he’s in during the latter portion of the book is a twisting maze of a mansion. Everything from the past to the present and the characters’ connections were well thought out and illustrated masterfully.
the verdict
Stormbringer was incredibly enjoyable. The pace pushed me through a little quicker than I expected, and even though I already expected most of the twists and turns, it was absolutely worth the re-read with polished prose and grittier details about such a wonderfully different urban fantasy I need more of.
