Four of my favourite photos I took in April 2024 and month summary
The photos are of; an Osprey at Lossiemouth in Moray, Speckled Wood on dandelions by Lakeside Country Park in Hampshire, early spider orchid at Durlston in Dorset and view at Laggan Dam.
April was another momentous and splendid wild month for me with so much seen and many amazing places visited. My birdwatching year continued to go from strength to strength with some smashing spring species seen and my year list kept pace with where my others had been at this stage in a year being second only to the number I was on last year my highest ever year list. Spring delights Swallow, House Martin, Wheatear, Whitethroat, glorious Sedge Warbler, Redstart, thrilling views of Guillemot and Fulmar, Little Tern and Common Tern were key species added to my year list this month alongside blockbuster names Osprey and rare Marsh Sandpiper. Avocet, Marsh Harrier, Buzzard, Sand Martin, Goldcrest, Blackcap seen and heard and my first Cuckoos heard this year were other highlights. Following the Lakeside Great Crested Grebes with their four growing chicks and a pair still courting and the new Winchester Peregrine pair was special again this month, as was seeing Greylag goslings and adorable Moorhen chicks at Lakeside. The month ended and the new one began whilst away on the incredible adventure that has been our Scotland holiday; it has been pure, tranquil, joyful and nourishing being out in wilderness areas surrounded and embraced by sensational wildlife both at the amazing cottage we’re staying in and the many fantastic places visited. By the end of April we had already seen many of the standout species of the trip including resplendent summer plumage Black-throated Diver and Red-throated Diver, majestic White-tailed Eagle, exuberant Willow Warblers a very welcome constant, Pink-footed Geese, Red Grouse, Red-legged Partridge, loads of Common Sandpipers, Little Ringed Plover, Knot, Hooded Crow, Kittiwake, amazing views of many Ospreys, Razorbill, Puffin, Common Scoter, Goosander, Goldeneye, Long-tailed Duck, Teal, Wheater, Sand Martin, Yellowhammer, Crossbill, Brambling, White Wagtail, Tree Sparrow, Raven, Skylark, Buzzard, Common Gull, Curlew, Lapwing and Oystercatcher.
It was a massive butterfly month for me too as the peak season moved through the early gears enjoying magical views of Red Admiral, Peacock, Brimstone, Speckled Wood, Small Tortoiseshell, Small White, Orange Tip, Green-veined White, Holly Blue and Wall Brown with many making the most of the wealth of dandelions out the front and at Lakeside. My moth year got going too with White-shouldered House moth at home and bright Brimstone moth at Durlston.
It was a marvellous month of mammals with Hedgehog at home, more Roe Deers in a strong year I’m having for them, Sika Deers on the way to Durlston and Grey Squirrels enjoyed. A massive part of the Scotland trip was exhilarating encounters with mammals, getting some of my best ever views of certain species; inside April this included stunning intimate views of Hares and Roe Deers around the cottage, an amazing moment as a Stoat ran through the garden, a dream encounter watching Bottlenose Dolphins at Spey Bay and Mountain Goats. Bees, spiders, Black and Yellow Cellar slugs and pill woodlouse were other highlights this moth.
Flowers gripped my month of course too as the season really matured with cuckooflower, garlic mustard, wild garlic, early purple orchid, my first ever known sighting of green-winged orchid, early spider orchid, cowslips, bluebells, greater stitchwort, marsh marigold, wood anemone, milkwort, buttercups, lesser celandine, wood anemone, cuckoo-pint, red deadnettle, white deadnettle, yellow archangel, forget-me-not, green alkanet, speedwell and herb-Robert starring alongside the breathtaking dandelion scenes. Vetch, sea and red campion, thrift, hogweed and oxeye daisy (some more than others and largely down to personal perspective) were examples of the cycle of the floral year being slightly ahead again. In Scotland it was interesting to observe spring being slightly behind compared to home with daffodils and primroses still around in numbers among others. It was nice to enjoy the sight of fungi here and there in April including hoof fungus in Scotland.
I enjoyed two great social occasions this month, the Hampshire Ornithological Society’s Member’s Day and a talk from Megan McCubbin based around her book which I thoroughly enjoyed reading earlier in the year. Both were inspirational and eye-opening times where it was great to meet like-minded people something watching the Great Crested Grebes has allowed a lot too. Finally I enjoyed being out and looking out so much in April taking in my surroundings and taking in some wonderful vistas and epic sky scenes. Immersed in the splendour of the vast, open, rugged, mountainous and varied landscape in Scotland also including wetland, coast and forest we enjoyed some incredible and breathtaking views.

I god dam fucking love Veronica Speedwell, both the books and the character
Stoker had to relive his greatest tragedy and finally tell Veronica about it when he clearly didn’t want to and Veronica tells the reader that he was in an “unaccountably foul mood for the rest of the day”
Unaccountably, really?? I feel like I can account for it. Aren’t you a detective

Regional guide to the Peak District
From heathery moors to rolling hills and underground caverns, the Peak District is home to some of the most majestic landscapes in the country
In the Peak District, heritage takes different forms. Britain is home to 15 National Parks, and the oldest of them is found right here. This much-loved swathe of the Midlands, covering some 555 square miles of dramatic hill terrain, was the very first National Park to be created, back in 1951. To many minds, it still belongs at the top of the pile.
Illustration: Michael Hill
But the history of the Peak District extends way beyond a mid-20th-century assignation. Neanderthal stone tools have been found in its caves, Bronze Age burial mounds still hunch on its ridges and the remnants of age-old hillforts litter its slopes. The Romans came here too, setting out roads and mining for lead, an abundant mineral which later brought fortune to local landowners. The end result is an area dotted with grand stately homes and ancient remains, all of them dwarfed by the wide-open wonders of the landscape itself.
Looked at on the map, unfurled in the green space between Sheffield, Derby and Manchester, the region can be divided into two quite separate areas. The northern half of the National Park, sitting on gritstone rock and characterised by high areas of open moorland, is known as the Dark Peak. The southern half, formed of limestone and playing home to gentle dales, burbling rivers and ash woodland, is known as the White Peak.
Both are fascinating in their own right. The Dark Peak contains the iconic plateau of Kinder Scout, where a mass trespass of 500 walkers in 1932 led to a change in the laws regarding access rights, something the country as a whole still benefits from today. Of the two, however, it’s the White Peak which holds more appeal for the first-time visitor, not least because of the variety of its attractions.
Many of these places of interest are manmade. The wider region contains history-rich market towns like Bakewell, home to the famed pudding of the same name, and Buxton, once a fashionable spa resort and still renowned for its spring water. You’ll also find fascinating little villages such as Eyam, famously cut off from the outside world by a 17th-century plague outbreak, and Youlgreave, one of many settlements that still practices well dressing, a local tradition of decorating wells with flowers and other natural materials a few weeks after Easter.
Dovedale is known for its stepping stones and meandering river. Credit: Alan Novelli/Alamy
Tucked among the Peak District’s rolling hills, meanwhile, are some of the finest stately homes in central England. Top of the list is surely spectacular Chatsworth House, where more than 100 acres of gardens surround a truly grand residence which has passed down through 16 generations of the Cavendish family. Its art collection alone – spanning four millennia – means it should be part of any Peak District itinerary, and Capability Brown himself had a hand in the layout of the gardens.
But Chatsworth is just the start. The region also holds the Elizabethan masterwork that is Hardwick Hall – where the windows are so numerous it’s often described as “more glass than wall” – and the crenellated medieval majesty of Haddon Hall, which has starred on screen in both Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice. Lyme Park, once a hunting lodge and still an imposing stately home, is another gem with extensive grounds.
By way of contrast to these mighty mansions rising from the land, the White Peak also has large-scale attractions underground. Poole’s Cavern near Buxton is home to vast subterranean chambers, and the show caves around the town of Castleton – so named for the ruined 11th-century castle that still stands here – provide more of the same.
Haddon Hall has been famous for its roses since Elizabethan times
Some of these, such as Treak Hill Cavern and Blue John Cavern, grant access to natural netherworlds of rare rock types and age-old stalactites and stalagmites. Others, including Speedwell Cavern and Peak Cavern – the latter, incidentally, also known as The Devil’s Arse – give insight into the underground industry and mining practices that have been a part of Peak District life for so long.
The creator of Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle, was so impressed by the scale and extent of the mines and caves beneath the region that he pronounced “all this country is hollow – could you strike it with some gigantic hammer it would boom like a drum.” It’s known that the author once stayed at Castleton, and the fact that he later set a story in the area shows that the formations above ground made no less of an impression.
Not far from Castleton is the great shapely hill of Mam Tor, arguably the best-known summit in the National Park. Once the site of a hillfort, its 517-metre-high top can be reached with relative ease via a paved footpath. Being roughly at the centre of the entire region, it grants deep views in every direction. If you’re in the mood for continuing the walk, the Great Ridge carries on from Mam Tor, eventually rising to meet Lose Hill, a popular hike of around 2.5 miles each way.

The Peak District is full of more challenging outdoor options, from the climbing hotspot of the Stanage Edge escarpment to long-distance treks such as the Pennine Way, which begins here in the mellow little village of Edale. If you’d rather sample the scenery in a more sedate manner, however, the options are just as numerous.
The three adjoining reservoirs of Ladybower, Derwent and Howden offer miles of flat walking and cycling terrain, as well as the chance to encounter more history – the area was used for dummy trials of Professor Barnes Wallis’ famous ‘bouncing bomb’ in the Second World War, thanks to its physical resemblance to Germany’s Rühr dams. It later starred in the film The Dam Busters.
Further south is picturesque Dovedale, a valley known for its stepping stones and meandering river. It draws plenty of visitors, but do make the effort to walk past the stepping stones, after which the crowds start to thin. And if you’d rather avoid the main flow of tourism altogether, the region has a whole host of quieter scenic valleys, among them Cressbrook Dale, Monk’s Dale and Peter Dale. Because that’s the thing with a place as broad and varied as the Peak District – it’s packed with attractions, but there’s also plenty of space to go round. Which, somewhere as handsome as this, can only be a good thing.
Getting there
The Peak District is easily reached by car, being around 3hr 15min from London, 1hr 30min from Birmingham and only an hour or so from Manchester. The National Park is also well served by bus and rail, with train stations at places such as Edale, Hope and Hathersage. nationalexpress.com; thetrainline.com
Where to stay
The Cavendish Hotel on the Chatsworth House estate offers finely furnished rooms and an excellent restaurant. The Peacock at Rowsley is a luxurious option near Bakewell with four-poster bedrooms and a fine-dining restaurant. Alstonefield Manor is a B&B with bags of charm, set in a country house on the hills above Dovedale. Expect fresh flowers, high-class decor and scones and tea on arrival. cavendishbaslow.co.uk; thepeacockatrowsley.com; alstonefieldholidaycottages.com
Where to eat
An atmospheric 18th-century pub on the village green at Alstonefield, The George offers Michelin-recommended dining, thanks in part to having its own vegetable garden. Other local produce, such as Derbyshire beef, features heavily on the menu. thegeorgeatalstonefield.com

At long last, it’s August. We don’t want to wish our lives away but we have a long holiday this month, and big plans for a tour of Scotland. It’s my first visit to Scotland, and I have to be honest, in my mind’s eye Scotland is a grey and dreary place. My expectation of Scotland is probably tainted by reading too many Irvine Welsh books, so I’m keen to find out what it’s really like.
Stuart has planned the first couple of stops. Apart from that we have tickets to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo one night and as it’s August, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is on. We’d also like to visit Loch Ness to find Nessie, and we want to go to the West Coast to see some of these amazing beaches we’ve heard about. For months we’ve been saving notes from Facebook groups such as Motorhome Madness with tips of places to visit. The result is a list of places that don’t really form a logical route at all, so we decide to make it up as we go along.
We managed to see so much, and everywhere we went, it seemed to be even more stunning and impressive than the last place.
We enjoyed Clan history in the borders region as well as by Loch Lomond. We had a brilliant time at the Fringe Festival. We we’re moved by the Military Tattoo. We were humbled by the mountains on the Isle of Skye, amazed by the beaches at Arisaig. We enjoyed paddle boarding in the most awe-inspiring scenery. We loved the stunning views at Glencoe. We endured some amazing storms whilst being parked up on coastal clifftops at the Point of Stoer. We loved the deserted places with so few people, but the people we did meet were fantastic and left a lasting impression!
Here’s a summary of our stops and what we did at each:
Night 1 – Edale, Peak District. First stop, and boy it’s WET! We go for a brief walk in the hills. After plenty of rain, the next morning we’re stuck on the field. Luckily a friendly farmer tows us off. We visit Castleton and Speedwell Cavern for an underground boattrip. We enjoyed coming down the Winnats Pass.
Night 2 – Ladybower Inn, Bamford by Ladybower lake. After getting stuck, we decide not to go back to the campsite with the wet field. We visit Derwent Dam and watch a Lancaster Bomber fly over. We end up staying at this britstop which was a really great spot!
Night 3 – Ullswater, Lake District. After a stop at Penrith, we make our way to Ullswater. We enjoyed a boat trip on the lake and visited Pooley Bridge and Glenridding. We watched a stunning sunset over the lake.
Night 4 – Lauder C&CC club site, Borders region Scotland. We have no more plans, so we check out Hawick Aire, which looks fine, but we travel on to visit Jedburgh. It’s a lovely little town, where we visited the Castle Jail and the house that Mary Queen of Scots visited. There is also a beautiful abbey ruins. As Hawick was now in the wrong direction, we travelled on to Lauder C&CC.
Night 5, 6 and 7 – Edinburgh DA Temporary Site Danderhall. Finally, it’s nearly time for the Edinburgh Military Tattoo! It’s my first visit to Edinburgh, and I’m very excited about seeing the city, experiencing the Fringe Festival, and seeing the Military Tattoo. While here, we take in several shows of the Fringe, in venues that allow Luna to come in. We thoroughly enjoy the Military Tattoo, while our kind neighbours at the Danderhall DA site volunteer to look after Luna. We also visit the Edinburgh Underground Vaults, and we climb up Arthur’s seat. An absolutely brilliant few days had, and I can’t wait to visit again.
Night 8 – The Benleva Hotel, Drumnadrochit. From Edinburgh we decide on a long drive. We visit Fort Augustus (of The Loch fame) and Invermoriston where there is some dramatic scenery. We drive along the lake, but to be honest, this is possibly my least favourite stage. Fort Augustus is deserted, and whilst the lake it beautiful, the fact that there is no one around is a bit of a shame. The pub we stay at is very friendly and welcoming.
Night 9 – Overnight at the Point of Stoer after an awesome journey. We were awed by the scenery along the A835, which is the bottom road of the NC500. We briefly stopped at Ullapool before carrying on to the Assynts. We visited Clashnessie beach with the seal, shopped in the tiniest supermarket ever in Clachtoll and weathered the storm on top of the cliff by the lighthouse. Stuart caught a fish at the Point for dinner. This was our most northern stop, tomorrow we head south again.
Night 10 – Gairloch. We stayed in the Marina carpark which was OK as it was quiet. We tried to go on a whale watching trip but they were booked up so we missed out. We watched the seals playing in the harbour and fished off the pier. We walked up to the Flowerdale Falls and to the Big Sand, Gairloch’s huge golden beach. It was a really lovely stop.
Night 11 – Mallaig, the carpark by the ferry from. Armadale. We visited the Isle of Skye today, and were humbled by the mountains. We spend most of the day on the Isle, driving and taking in the scenery. We took the ferry to Mallaig after arguing with Gloria that we could surely drive there… (Gloria is always right…!). It was a long day so we got to Mallaig quite late and manage to squeeze into the last space in the carpark.
Night 12 – Silversands Arisaig. One of the absolute highlights of the trip! Beautiful, Stunning! We went paddleboarding, had a roast dinner in the van, survived a ‘yellow weather warning’ storm which caused flooding and roads to collapse nearby. We experienced the most spectacular thunder that made the ground shake!
Night 13 – Glencoe for the night, on the bank of Loch Leven after a stop at Glenfinnan Viaduct. Walked around Glencoe and enjoyed the mountains around us. The campsite has a space for us on the bank, so we have great views. We walk around and learn about the murdered MacDonalds Clan and seeing the memorials. It was strange to get to places where lots of people are again, especially driving through Fort William. It made us want to go back north.
Night 14 – Luss C&CC at Loch Lomond. Explored Luss, which was lovely and quaint. Met some lovely C&CC HSA’s who happened to be from our neck of the woods. Went paddle boarding on Loch Lomond which was just awesome; a crash course in how to feel very small!
Night 15 – Kendal Cricket Club. We visited Hadrian’s wall on the way there, at Birdoswald Fort. We explored Kendal, and we learnt that there is an easy connection to Windermere. So I think we’ll visit the Cricket club again to take the train to Windermere.
Night 16 – The Wharf at Bridge 190, Aynho. Brilliant canal boat yard Britstop. Visited Banbury for a Dutch lunch at Little Amsterdam and spent the afternoon in the Great Western Arms next to the boat yard. We met a lovely couple, whose property we’d driven past in the Assynts… What are the chances? I’d even seen the man, Russ, walk his dogs up there. Well, it isn’t exactly crowded in the Assynts so people do stand out.
Finally, it’s time to go home, but we have had the most amazing trip, with experiences that have really inspired us. It’s time to set the wheels in motion to make our dreams come true! No time like the present!
Last summer's Epic Roadtrip! If Scotland is on your list, read this! At long last, it's August. We don't want to wish our lives away but we have a long holiday this month, and big plans for a tour of Scotland.
