Spinalonga: The small island of Crete with a shocking history, which rivals Knossos in popularity.

Victoria Hislop’s book made the old leper state internationally known, which still awes visitors.

It is not easy to refer to Spinalonga and treat it as if it were any small island picturesquely placed on the coast of Crete, in an area with abundant low vegetation and coastal beauties. Not because these elements do not exist in the surrounding environment, but because the shadow of history falls heavily here, as the old leper state still awes those who arrive as visitors.

Kulinarisch kann man auf Kreta eigentlich nichts falsch machen, den gute und regionale Küche gibt es praktisch überall. Ein Blick auf die jeweilige Speisekarte genügt. Thinking about the summer I turned 12 and my 12 year old self….. I was at Crete on family vacay with my friend and even tho I was terrified of getting leprosy cause we were gonna visit spinalonga I was running around in my floral lacy skirt listening to one direction. I was a narcissistic little bitch then too and probably all of the things happening to me is some sort of payback but still I’m not sure I’ll ever reach that level of freedom again

Les oubliés de Spinalonga 😢

L’île de Spinalonga, tout près de la Crète, a fait l’objet d’un roman de Victoria Hislop : “L’île des oubliés”. Sur cette île, de 1904 à 1957, ont vécu tous les lépreux dont la Crète puis la Grèce se débarrassaient. Les malades n’avaient pas le choix. Jeunes enfants ou adultes parfois très âgés étaient obligatoirement déportés à Spinalonga. À Plaka, port d’embarquement de ces malheureux malades, des scènes d’adieux déchirantes avaient lieu presque tous les jours. “Oubliés”, rejetés, sans la moindre visite. Ce triste fait historique nous interroge.

L’expression : “Loin des yeux, loin du cœur” serait-elle juste ?

Oublier est le propre de l’être humain : “Tu as mis en oubli le Dieu qui t’a enfanté” (Deutéronome 32, 18). Mais du côté de Dieu, personne n’est oublié, ni ne peut être rejeté, même le pire des malfaiteurs s’il se repent de ses péchés, comme celui qui était crucifié à côté de Jésus. Il lui a demandé : “Souviens-toi de moi, Seigneur, quand tu viendras dans ton royaume; Jésus lui dit : En vérité, je te dis : Aujourd’hui tu seras avec moi dans le paradis” (Luc 23, 42-43).

Déjà, sur la terre, Dieu n’oublie aucun de ses enfants dans les difficultés de leur vie quotidienne : “Il n’oublie pas le cri des affligés” (Psaume 9, 13). Jésus l’a confirmé à ses disciples : “Ne vend-on pas cinq moineaux pour deux sous ? Et pas un seul d’entre eux n’est oublié devant Dieu… Vous valez mieux que beaucoup de moineaux” (Luc 12, 6-7).
