Because I know what it feels like, to feel like you don’t belong. To feel like there’s this darkness inside of you, to be scared of who you are, what you can do.

2x16, Road Kill
Critical theory: Hope, and what it means to haunt.
Discussion question(s): Once again, how does this connect to our themes and motifs? How would we compare this episode to the two that we’ve already discussed this season (No Exit and Playthings) in which the ghost is not ‘killed’? Why is this episode more satisfying than those (particularly Playthings)?
Key quotes: Sam, “Some spirits only see what they want.”; Sam, “Doesn’t really matter, Dean. Hope is kind of the whole point.”
Further reading: Change of pace, not all ghosts are evil (@cockworkangels)
The Winchesters are ghosts themselves. (@mornyavie) (slight caveat of. As discussed in 2x01 Dean was going to move on, he had accepted his death and was going to go with Tessa.)
Even if it is full of love, all a ghost can do is haunt. (@baneofambitions)
Discussion: A good episode. We liked the structure, like an episode where we kind of arrive midway through the hunt. Iga thought Molly was the ghost as soon as the car was gone, but then doubted. Unfortunately Sam had some points this episode—she wasn’t ready to know, and hope is the whole point
Julio, “haunting is when your presence is unrequested and disturbs the peace of other people.” and “some people don’t even know they’re haunting, alive people also, and they can make that choice.”
Re: Playthings. Gives us a new view on Playthings, because maybe reuniting was their way of finding peace, and they could stay because that’s all they wanted in the end. But this was different. Molly had autonomy, and had the choice to move on. She also in a way made the choice to stay. Dean was given the choice in 2x01. Maybe all the ghosts make that choice, and maybe that’s why Dean doesn’t have much sympathy for them.
Re: reading 2. We’ve talked about Dean’s need to take a holiday, but because of Sam’s insistence to stay (his refusal to let go) he has to stay.
A nice addition to the motif of ‘are all supernatural beings evil’
Iga: She wasn’t evil, but she did cause the deaths of others by being unable to let go. She did hurt others, but her crime was loving her husband too much.
Another motif of being ‘stuck.’ They’re both stuck. Dean with the job, Sam with his destiny. Dean with Sam, Sam with Dean. The ghosts are stuck, the supernatural creatures are stuck.
Finale speculation. Lot’s of thoughts. Maybe Dean has to choose between killing Sam and dying (he chooses to die, of course). Maybe they let something awful happen because the only way to stop it is killing Sam. Revisiting Dean finding a way to swap his life for Sam. Many options.
Star student: Juice on haunting.

2x16 roadkill is a really compelling shift on how supernatural usually does its narrative. and I don't just mean the shock value, either. as far as filler episodes go, it's one of my favorites. will not be rewatching it again soon though cause ironically ghosts scare the shit outta me

Y’all, Roadkill (2x16) is a damn good episode of tv. It’s well written, exquisitely directed, top notch acting, simply heartbreaking. Just a damn good episode.

thoughts on spn 2x16:
- literally why is she hanging around, you gotta run girlie
- this episode is boring
- “you’re like a walking encyclopedia of weirdness”
- what is going on.
- 1/10

I can't speak for where they go with this kind of thing because I've only watched the first couple seasons (and even then I'm skimming and skipping a good bit), but early Supernatural goes so hard on the Winchesters being ghosts themselves.
It's repeated and blatant that, in Supernatural, a ghost is just a regular person who refuses to let go. Whether it's revenge, grief, guilt, or something else entirely, the ghost simply can't give it up and move on. After making this clear in more subtle ways, episode 2x01 flat-out states it: Dean's in a coma after a car crash, and the reaper tells his spirit that he can either let it go or become a ghost.
REAPER Well, like you said. There's always a choice. I can't make you come with me. But you're not getting back in your body. And that's just facts. So yes, you can stay. You'll stay here for years. Disembodied, scared, and over the decades it'll probably drive you mad. Maybe you'll even get violent. DEAN What are you saying? REAPER Dean. How do you think angry spirits are born? They can't let go and they can't move on. And you're about to become one. The same thing you hunt.
(as you can probably guess, he does not, in fact, move on)
Later, in 2x16, the brothers are hunting a highway ghost with the aid of a woman who survived the crash it caused.
SAM [exchanging a look with DEAN] I think maybe you should come with us. We'll take you back into town. MOLLY I can't. I have to find David. He might have gone back to the car. SAM We should get you somewhere safe first. Then Dean and I will come back. We'll look for your husband. MOLLY No. I'm not leaving here without him. Would you just take me back to my car, please?
She refuses to leave the area without first finding her husband, and I realized a few things immediately:
She's a ghost (later in the episode this is confirmed)
The thing that tipped me off was her refusal to accept what's happened and inability to move on
In order for something like that to be such an obvious tell, the show has been using this "definition" repeatedly and deliberately.
Who else in this show acts this way?
Sam and Dean (and their father John) are locked out of normal society by their lives as hunters, acting out the same pattern everywhere they go, saving someone from the supernatural and then leaving to do it again somewhere else.
20 years ago Mary Winchester died, and none of them have moved on.
Over the course of the show, each of the Winchesters will utterly refuse to accept the deaths of their loved ones. They'll get caught up in quests for revenge. John sacrifices himself for Dean's life and Dean sacrifices his for Sam's and Sam sacrifices his for Dean's and-- over and over, they're caught in this cycle because they never, ever let go.
They're ghosts still walking. At least the regular kind you can kill with salt.
