I rewatched a bunch of s1 of She-Ra last night (…instead of writing) and man, the problem with Promise is that I’ve always been too distracted by how cute and heartbreaking the kid scenes are to truly internalize a few things—

First, it’s obviously the turning point at which Catra decides Adora is her enemy (I mean she does have a whole little speech about it)

But also it makes a lot more sense when you KNOW Light Hope is actually kinda evil. She does spend the whole episode telling Adora that having attachments is Bad, and if Adora won’t let Catra go on her own, she’ll fucking force it. Here, I’ll make you and your friend relive parts of your childhood with the specific purpose of making her push you away! And it worked!

I mean, in the long run it doesn’t work. It just takes four seasons to fix it lol.

Oh and I know I said this when I did my rewatch a few weeks ago, but also there’s that scene a few episodes earlier where Shadow Weaver makes Catra think Hordak is gonna fucking kill her (and hooboy is it hard to watch as a child abuse survivor) and Hordak instead makes her Force Captain—and dude. If he’d actually punished her? She would have actually left, I think.

And I don’t think Hordak did it because he actually thought Catra would be good at it. He does it to punish Shadow Weaver.

You have no idea how long this took, but I made some phone case designs! And you can get them as other stuff, but I started this project when I get a new phone. One of these is transparent and designed for stickers specifically. These are available on both Redbubble and Society6. See my post with details/disclaimers about the platform/quality differences here.

Designs: 1) “Promise?” S1 Sword of Protection (Base Version) Inspired by a season 5 promotional poster (near the bottom). Left to right, the First Ones script says “Promise?” and “I promise.” (Note: I chose to curve the final sound on “Promise?” to represent the upward tilt of a question) Colorways: sky blue (RB / S6), navy (RB / S6).

2) “Promise?” Broken S1 Sword of Protection (Variant) The addition at the bottom is an inversion of “She-ra”, a striking point for the sword. Colorways: sky blue (RB / S6), navy (RB / S6).

3) “Promise?” S5 Sword of Protection (Variant) Updated for season five, colorways are shifted to accommodate the new sword’s color palate, but otherwise it’s the same as the first version. Colorways: sky blue (RB / S6), pink (RB / S6), navy (RB / S6), maroon (RB / S6), lilac (RB only — I ran out of design slots on S6). Can you tell which design is my favorite child (which is funny because this is the last idea I had)?

4) Swords of Protection Decal Meant more for stickers and the like, this is a variant includes both the season 1 and season 5 sword design. (RB / S6)

I think one of the reasons "Promise" is such a good episode, perhaps the most important aspect to it working, is that there are no distractions. There is no B-plot, there is no Bow and Glimmer finding Swift Wind until the next episode, there is no comedy moments of Scorpia and Entrapta becoming friends until after the end, there is only very raw Catra and Adora going through their memories in the crystal temple.

She-ra giving itself the space to focus on something pure and tense, giving the episode such a powerful OST, and letting it sit on its own reveals, is why Promise feels special that first time you watch it. You realise that the show you’re watching is becoming way better than it has the right to be.

honestly fascinating how I didn't perceive Catra as an angry character until she pointed out that she was working on it in s5

I think that at the time I watched the show (high school 2018-2020), I related to her so hard and was so entrenched in her perspective, that most of her angry responses felt righteous and perfectly reasonable. And to be fair, Catra's angry reactions do make perfect sense given the environment she's in. They track perfectly because she's well-written. I was just like "huh, I guess that is a thing she could work on"
