does anyone else find it kinda weird that SPOP just casually dropped in the fact that there’s a Prince who can see ANYWHERE in the world magically, aka the perfect spy, and Glimmer just… didn’t think of recruiting him?
Why wasn’t Peekablue already part of the Rebellion??? What is he using his powers for that’s soooo important? He could literally see all of the Horde’s plans and warn the Rebellion and give them a HUGE leg up on them, and he wasn’t even mentioned until S5.
I know he was a hermit almost never seen but are you telling me Glimmer wouldn’t even TRY to find him and convince him to join? That’s a mystery in itself; where IS Peekablue, and why does no one care? Is he literally missing? Because if he’s literally missing, maybe someone should help him.

Man, it it weird that Adora spends two whole episodes looking for the First One's secret nuke, only to have the show then act like she innocently stumbled over the Heart, and never once in a million years thought about using it? That the idea of using the First Ones Magic nuke was only ever Shadow Weaver and Glimmer's idea?

HOLD ON. Was anyone going to tell me the author of The Girl From The Sea, works on The Owl House, wrote Enchanting Grom Fright, and married ND Stevenson, the creator of She-Ra (2018), or was I just supposed to find out through a tumblr page with a Peridot profile picture myself?

Catra, as she cups Adora’s face, tears brimming: I love you.
Adora, needing to be cruel to be kind, so Catra moves on after her death: It will pass.

Thinking about the significance of falling when it come to Catradora. Obviously the imagery of cliffs, holding on to each other, and letting go are all significant in the narrative when it comes to their relationship. Two instances in particular stand out to me though as notable parallels. Catra falling into the portal and re-emerging as a twisted version of herself is very much in conversation with Adora falling into the chasm in the First One’s Temple and re-emerging as someone closer to the She-Ra that Light Hope (or her original programming) wants her to be. In both cases they’re reacting to having just experienced a mindbending mimicry of their lives together in the Horde before they split up. This is so eerie partially because reality is being expertly bent in both cases since there is a lot of truth woven into what Adora and Catra are seeing.
Adora is forced to literally let go (of her hold on the Cliff, her memories of Catra, her current feelings about Catra)/fall into the chasm. Light Hope has been trying to get her to let go the whole time because Adora’s attachment to other people threatens the First One’s plans to turn her into a weapon. Isolation. Other people are keeping her human. That of course extends to the Best Friends Squad, though it’s true that everyone expects too much of her, even the people she’s closest with. I think that’s one of the things that makes her relationship with Catra bloom in season 5. Catra wants Adora, specifically, not She-Ra. She is protective of Adora the person in a way that other people aren’t necessarily because she has an understanding of her that Bow and Glimmer aren’t going to have since they didn’t grow up with her in the Horde. Once Catra moves on from feeling in competition with Adora, then she can fully embrace her feelings. But anyway, tangent.
Adora being forced to let go/fall from the cliff is just the continuation of the idea that Adora feels like she has to choose the greater good over her own wants such as when she chooses the Rebellion over Catra. In her mind, she feels like there isn’t a choice. She has to leave Catra, even though she doesn’t want to do so. Light Hope is trying to take advantage of that trait for her own purposes, pushing Adora to follow orders and do what is best in the minds of the First Ones.
Now, Catra. Catra lets go of the cliff herself as reality is being pulled apart. This whole scene says so much about where her character is at this point in the plot. First of all, she tries to drag Adora down with her. She can’t stand the idea of Adora being better than her and on the moral high ground because part of that competitive dynamics is very much rooted in Shadow Weaver’s treatment of them both as children. Adora was prioritized. Catra was directly compared to Adora negatively and threatened with harm if she interfered with Adora’s “progress” in any way. Catra and Adora are both self-destructive at two ends of the same spectrum and the pressure/trauma caused by The Horde & First Ones are pushing them to extremes. Isolating extremes. Catra constantly feels a lack of safety and struggles with self-hatred. Catra lets go as she stares Adora in the eyes because she doesn’t feel worth much. I think that’s symbolic of her constantly pushing other people away on purpose as a way to both punish and protect herself.
When Catra re-emerges as Corrupted Catra we can see that her loathing for what Adora represents in her life has been taken to an extreme. I’m a believer that Corrupted Catra is just that. She’s still partially herself, but all of her instincts are taken to an extreme and it’s a raw expression of her hurt. Her pain is being visually symbolized by pieces of her simply being gone. This is another representation of the affect trauma is having on her and her life. That entire scene is brutal and it is good that Adora finally stands up for herself since obviously Catra is not justified in lashing out, but as she stands over Catra’s passed-out body, I think it’s a reminder that circumstances have been out of their control for a long while now. Trauma can isolate and push people away from each other (even when they need each other for healing), as well as away from being able to fully express themselves.
Then season 5 rolls around. Healing. Other people. Wanting. Self-expression. Wonderful things. Catra and Adora being together - what they bring out in each other - challenges both Shadow Weaver and the Horde’s purposes for them. Together, they defy control. You see, if they are able to truly love and connect with each other, then Adora might not conform to what the First One’s want of her and once Catra is able to move beyond the barriers in her relationship with Adora placed there by Shadow Weaver, she can’t be controlled by the Horde anymore either. They are defiance and self-expression and love and I’m totally obsessed with this show, aren’t I?

"Light Spinner" was honestly the most heartbreaking She Ra episode I've seen so far
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Catra constantly insists she is nothing like Shadow Weaver in any way, but the parallels between her journey and Shadow Weaver's as Light Spinner are not even subtle. Shadow Weaver even says they are similar, that she reminds her of herself. And as much as Catra insists she doesn't want that, of course she wants that. She wants them to be similar because she thinks that Shadow Weaver will finally love her and appreciate her if she's another version of her, only better, if she doesn't make the same mistakes, if she comes out on top. She hates her so much but she also wants to BE her, but the thing preventing her from following in Shadow Weaver's footsteps is the best part about her. It's her capacity for love and kindness. It's her lack of selfishness and greed. She never wanted to rule the hoard or be second in command, but she feels like she has to be even as her own nature rebels against it.

The fact that shadow weavers last moments consists of getting power, showing off that power, giving catra and adora orders and then traumatizing them even more by exploding infront of them...

no i'm going to continue to talk about she-ra merch actually. specifically, i want to talk about the different versions/releases of Adora in the fashion dolls (one in particular but we'll get to that). As far as I can tell they released this line in 2019, botched it, and left the pieces to the scalpers and collectors. I wasn't around for that so feel free to add context in the replies if you know it.
It kind of makes sense since she's the main character but half the line is Adora. The initial line up was Adora (in her red jacket), Glimmer, Bow, Catra, and a separate doll for She-ra, with everyone in their season 1 outfits (obvs). She-ra had a different sculpt than Adora and was taller than the others. That's 2 Adoras out of 5 dolls so far.
They also released the "Battle of Bright Moon" set which featured She-ra in her battle armor along with Swift Wind. I'm really not sure whether to include him in the final doll count, but since his quality was shit and I don't usually count "pets," I'm going to say we're at 3 Adoras out of 6 dolls. (we will be circling back around to this set it's the whole reason we're here)
The last set is the SDCC exclusive She-ra vs Shadow Weaver set. This has (as far as I can tell) the "same" She-ra as the original release but with a bigger cape and better skirt, along with a Shadow Weaver doll.
That's 4 Adoras out of 8 dolls, but what I want to talk about is the Battle of Bright Moon set, because it is SHIT. I'm gonna be using seller photos here because the official pics won't show you lmao. We'll start with what I think is an official photo for the SDCC set so you can see the usual She-ra to compare.
Tumblr media
As you can see, she's a skin-color articulated doll with a fabric unitard, skirt, and cape (again, the regular She-ra had a less luxurious cape and skirt, but was otherwise the same to this). Everything gold is plastic, so she has plastic boots, gauntlets, chest emblem, shoulder paldrons, and tiara. Also a sword. Everything I just listed could be removed and put back on. This is what they did for all of the dolls, She-ra or otherwise, in the line, but Battle of Bright Moon took... a different approach. Let's start with in-box seller photos because you can already see problems there.
Tumblr media
I wish I knew more context for this and maybe somebody can add it but from the best I can tell this was manufactured (maybe not priced, but manufactured) as a budget set. Swift Wind is a terrible plastic lump, but we have nothing to compare him to. Adora, though, has taken a big hit. The tiara, head, and probably the sculpt are the same but that's it. She doesn't have gauntlets at all, they just casted her forearms in gold since it was a separate piece anyway with the articulation. The skirt in the original she-ra outfit wasn't great, but this one is hot garbage, especially in open-box listings where it has often fallen apart. speaking of, lets go there to reveal the sin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah. She doesn't have clothes. They just casted her body and legs out of white and slapped a terrible skirt over it. At least they gave her actual boots instead of casting them like her "gauntlets." but the armor. It doesn't even cover her back!! It just snaps onto the front and makes it more obvious she's naked! They made this doll right twice why did they downgrade so bad for this set. The first time I saw a naked she-ra doll with a white body for sale I was so baffled because I hadn't paid too much attention to this one and didn't realize they'd done it completely differently (wrong. They did it wrong). I'm convinced they don't put a photo of her in this armor on the box so you don't realize how poorly done it is

Would you say Catra was written ooc in White Out?
Eeehn. I have complicated feelings about it?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Being weirdly specific: There's a discontinuity between Promise's "Bye, Adora. I Really Am Going To Miss You" and White Out's "You're Mine Now, Adora." Both draw on the same roots; the imbalance of their relationship, Catra's desire for control. But they don't quite ... mesh, as presented.
Catra so explicitly severs their bond in Promise (and is intentionally ambiguous on her feelings around Mind Control), that the show snapping to "OF COURSE Catra would be all in on dragging around a Brain-Wiped-Super-Weapon-Adora; it's all she ever wanted!", ends up feeling weird. It's not OOC - it's not something I can't see this character doing, in the situation presented - but it's under-contextualized. There's missing connective tissue; there needs to be a bridge saying why she's okay having Adora back NOW, in THIS context.
"I didn't want you back, but if I get to be in charge... well. Good thing you never did have much faith in me, huh."
Tumblr media
((Also to be weirdly petty - While it's a funny line, I'm trying to imagine a scenario where "Obvious and Profound issues with physical contact" Catra would casually use "No Boundaries" Scorpia as a scratching post, and, uh. Having trouble seeing how Catra was the instigator, honestly.))
