Positivity post! 🙏☀️ . In the midst of all the corona craziness, and the heartbreak of losing my special horse earlier this week, one thing that really brightens my day up is teaching! 💕 . I know it sounds so cheesy, but my favourite thing ever is watching someone work hard at doing something they love. No matter if they're at the top of their game or just starting out - and that goes for any sport or hobby regardless if its something that interests me or not! 😂 . I just genuinely love passionate people 🙏 . Dakota is one of those people; she shows up in wind, rain, or shine (with her equally dedicated Mum) and works her ass off every single time, several times a week. Polka is a unique challenge to her, he's a younger, greener horse, and between the good moments, he's constantly testing the waters! 😂💕 . I love Dakota's never say die attitude, her kindness to a green horse who tries, her tenacity when said green horse is being a turd, and her ability to recognise improvement - no matter how big or small 💕 . With an attitude and work ethic like that, you will go far young lady! Can't wait to keep cheering you on - bring on an exciting weekend! . Not sure what day of bootcamp this is, but this was his second ride back, and first one out of the round yard. In the rain. With thunder in the background 😂🙈 . Gotta say he was really good! It was warm outside, no wind, and a drizzle of rain to begin with, which are usually pretty nice conditions to ride in. Polkas great in all weather, I've never had him be silly due to wind or anything like that. When thunder started rolling in I got that knot of stress in my gut, but I needn't have worried - he was rock steady for me. I really need to give him more credit 💕 . He was a bit stiff and sluggish, but tried really hard for me all the same. I'm treating him to a massage on Thursday morning, and he'll be checked over to make sure we're all systems go for ramping up his workload! . Not sure what happened to summer, I feel like we didn't really get one this year! No complaints about the rain though, very grateful for full tanks and green grass 🙏 Back inside now with the thunderstorm ramping up outside, Tazzie's turn for a workout tomorrow 💕🐎 . Little Polka, first time in the round pen today. After having winter off, his ground work sure needed a good tune up - but we will get there! Really happy with how he's moving out, and he answered all my cues... Eventually! 😂🙈 The biggest problem I have with this horse is that he has a bit of a 'blah' work ethic. Some days he can be sensational, and others he just really has that 'couldn't care less' attitude. I'm hoping a good bit of groundwork and some consistency will help him, along with mixing it up and keeping the work interesting. We worked really hard today! Windy day, horses running around, calling out etc, and this kid had his game face on. I'm still focusing on riding him more forward and keeping him straighter, and we did a bit of counterflexion in the trot and canter, too. He was much better off my leg today, and I could tell he was genuinely trying hard for me - well, after he got his little throw down out of the way 😂💕 I ended up shortening my stirrups a hole at the start of the ride which is why I look a bit 'showjumper-y', but it was so I could ride a little stronger as my balance has been a bit crap. Weee, go Polka! 😆🚀 This little guy is just getting better and better every ride! Fixed the falling out through the outside shoulder going left, and focused on the 'go' button a bit more tonight. Still needs loads more work, but really happy with how hard he tried, and with how much straighter he was as a result. Much better listening to my outside rein, and we had a good little stretch at the end which i might pop a video up of later 😊 So rapt with my little spotty horse tonight, no attitude or throw downs - just got on with it like a gentleman... Aww Polka 💕 So love with this little horse, he's turning out to be such a cool dude! Can't wait to take him out to a few unofficial dressage days soon to get the ball rolling with him. A new jacket is on my shopping list, and definitely a new bridle at some stage as this one is looking a little worn out. Little snippet of Polka doing some stretching at end of our ride last night. I like to give them a stretch in warm up and cool down as it just gets them rolling along nicely without having to worry about much else - they just have to travel and relax 👌 This guy hasn't done heaps of it, but its definitely something I'd like to do more of with him as he just felt lovely! I wish this crappy weather would sod off! All week it's been high 30's and windy - horrible for the poor firies out there battling the bushfires, and today we have more high winds and a severe storm warning... Feeling sorry for the Queenslanders with the flooding, and those in the U.S with the #polarvortex ... I'm thinking Mother Nature needs to chill out! I suggest a block of chocolate, a big glass of @jackdaniels_us , and a @imsebastianstan movie - stat! 😂 Back in the gym tonight for some physio training and a run - if theres one thing I learned last year, it's that dressage riders are absolute athletes... Getting stronger! 💪💕I love how hard this little guy is trying lately, theres such a huge difference in him from the naughty, stubborn horse he was 6 months ago to now. We spent a fortune ruling out any issues with his gear, back, teeth, diet, or anything else we could think of, and as it turned out all he needed was work. Okay - pretty safe to say the spotted child is feeling good! I ended up just giving him a quick spin in a halter just to see where his brain was at, and despite the initial acrobatics, he was actually fairly polite. Polka 🦄 . This this is a post I've thought about writing soo many times, only to put it off and then come back again... And to think I had the cheek to call HIM stubborn, haha! . The honest truth is that we are as stubborn as each other, or I would have listened to the countless people who said I should have pulled the pin years ago. . I just wasn't ready yet 💕 . So the very short version is that Pokes always been a bit tricky. I've always been up for the challenge, but he was never an easy horse to ride - or to keep in work. The good days were amazing, the bad ones were horrid, and over the years we were getting more bad ones than good. . We had everything checked multiple times in recent years - gear, diet, bodywork, feet, teeth, you name it. We changed environment, rider, had a variety of coaches, tried different disciplines, tried spelling, bringing back into work, having a breaker get on, having a grand Prix rider get on, but he just wasn't a happy horse. . Sometimes they just don't want to do it any more. I've gotta give him credit though - he'd try for me, but I knew he wasn't enjoying it, and it wouldn't have been right to force him. . So he's been sitting in the paddock while I figured out what to do - selling was always out of the question, and he looked bored as hell 🙈 I put out an expression of interest to see if anyone else had a lonely horse who needed a companion, and within minutes I had messages coming in. . Today he went off to his beautiful new lease home for 12 months, to just go and enjoy living a life of leisure keeping another horse company. From talking to his new friends this morning - there may be a bit of spoiling on the cards, too 🥰 . I'll miss you little man, looking forward to visiting you in a few months for a great big cuddle 💕 . Hey everyone! 🙋🏼‍♀️ . So, something huge happened here today - I finally got to have my first ride back after having Mia! . The original plan was to get Bonsey out, (the out of work OTTB is my quiet one) but right on cue we have a trashed rug and a lame horse - as you do! 🤦🏼‍♀️ So with the only other options an unbroken pony, and a naughty warmblood who hasn't had a rider on in a year, the naughty warmblood was up! 😂 . We started with a bit of groundwork, and as I suspected his focus was everywhere else but on me... We had a bit of a chat about manners, and I sharpened him up with some fast changes of direction, finally getting those snappy 'yes mam' reactions I was after. We finished up with some desensitising and sensitising, having a play with disengaging the hind etc, and once I had his attention on the ground, I decided it was time to jump on. . We did a few trot circles, that little rear in the photo was him not wanting to go forward, and me insisting that he really should 😂🤦🏼‍♀️ He was lazy as all hell, just like I thought he'd be, but to his credit after our little discussion, he was super. We even went for a walk out the front and he didn't bat an eye. . Looking forward to getting more rides done, now that the first one is out of the way - definitely looking forward to getting my fitness back, that's for sure! 😂 . I might have to bale some local friends up for a jumping sesh or some trail riding I think 🥰 . Until then, here I am with my trusty notebook jotting down all my equestrian goals for the year, and the list is looking pretty long... 💪😁 .
