Free Comic Review: The World’s Greatest Hero, Jesus Christ!

I got a free comic from Costumers for Christ when @lechevaliermalfet​ and @shbumi​ went to the Springfield Comic Expo in 2019. Full disclosure: 90% of the wording of this review is just lifted from my post on that event on my other blog. I had meant to cross-post it here and never did, so I’m just fixing that now.

The story itself is just the Jesus story, repackaged in comic form and running between 20-30 pages..The art isn’t bad, either - it sort of reminds me of the Bible story comics in Boys’ Life magazine back in the day. 

The actual superheroes are only on a handful of pages aside from the cover - the intro and outro pages, essentially. But I imagine that Marvel and DC would still take some issues with their characters being presented this way. Probably both why the comics are 1) free and 2) printed in China.

Now, I have no problem with people wanting to talk about their faith, if they aren’t pushy. I spoke with these guys last year and they’re a polite, enthusiastic, nerdy bunch. At no time did I see them pressure anyone to take a comic, bookmark, or other item, or to stop and talk. People who declined were able to just keep going their merry way.

I am just noting they may potentially run into some trouble with some big companies and copyright lawsuits one day.

Springfield Comic Expo 2019: Saturday

At the start of the month, there was a weekend comic expo in Springfield, IL (8/10-8/11/19). The event was an expansion of last year’s Springfield Micro Con. It now ran for 2 days, panels had been added, and gaming expanded. Although it was a 2-day event, @lechevaliermalfet @shbumi and I only went for Saturday.

The location was the same as last year’s event:  the Crowne Plaza Springfield. Like last year, the vendors were in a main floor ballroom. They had registration set up at a nearby checkin counter. 

@lechevaliermalfet and I arrived after @shbumi, and since we had pre-registered, grabbing our wristbands was easy. Then we walked inside to browse. 

It’s a fairly sizeable space, and there was a decent selection of both fan-crafted merchandise, secondhand comics merchandise, and comics creators/authors to talk to/possibly commission some work from. 

We wandered for a bit, browsing the merch and hanging out with @shbumi​ and a coworker of hers who was also attending the con. 

While I didn’t end up with these, they were sort of tempting in their way.

I ended up with a pair of distressed Casper The Friendly Ghost comics that I intend to frame instead, from the same vendor. 

From another vendor, I got snacks. Because sake-flavored KitKats were a thing I needed to try. The alcohol taste isn’t present up-front but it is definitely there in the aftertaste.

We also attended one panel during the course of the day: Marvel Movies - The Ultimate Panel.

There was a 5th panelist, but at the angle we were at, he was hidden from view by the podium. Whoops. 

For myself and @lechevaliermalfet, I think the panel was really more a chance to sit and relax. We had time to think about the available stuff in the dealer room and decide what we wanted to go back for. We could enjoy listening to the panelists’ views on the MCU, and did, but neither of us are anywhere near caught up on it. 

After that, we had a great lunch at Smokey Bones BBQ - if you can find one in your area, I recommend it!

After lunch was the final trawl of the vendor area again. I got a free comic from Costumers for Christ

Aside from the free comic, we spent some time talking and people-watching. There were a handful of cosplayers out and about - I saw members of the 501st on hand - but I wonder if more attended on Sunday, when there was an actual cosplay contest scheduled. 

I was too shy to actually ask for photos. In fact, I only have photos of a glittery floor droid, and - because @shbumi​ was brave enough to ask - a group shot of us with a Dark Helmet cosplayer.

We also got some awesome art prints over the course of the day, and some anime for @lechevaliermalfet. And then the day was done.

For those wondering about Pokemon Go prospects in that area, well, there aren’t any.

Somehow, I survived.

I hope this con continues to be a thing for Springfield. It’s run by StL Comics who seem familiar with hosting small con events. I like the fact that for me, this is a laid-back event where I can meet interesting people. We spent probably 40 minutes talking to some older comic-collecting veterans and it was just really fun to hear them talk. And now I have an idea for how to collect and store commission doodles/autographs that I hadn’t considered before. Not that I commission art at the moment, but you never know...

I actually bought these items in March at ConBust, a couple months prior to Great Falls Comic Expo. ConBust is a small convention at Smith College in Northampton, MA, about a half hour north of Springfield, MA. Though it was small, they brought in some big names because of the connection to the college. Jane Yolen was there, and I personally got to meet Tamora Pierce and David Peterson (a prominent linguist who created the languages for Game of Thrones)!

But I digress. I bought the mug and print from the same artist. The mug came with a card with a character profile of sorts saying its name is Selena. I also bought a Conan figurine and a few Black Butler posters printed on durable vinyl/plastic.
