QuadCon Peoria November 2023

Honestly, this is one that we weren't planning to attend. We sort of forgot it was going on both days at the mall. We were there to meet some friends at the Smo-King Pit for lunch on the Sunday of QuadCon. Once we remembered the con was going on, however, we wandered around and did some shopping. And that's really about all there is to do at the mall QuadCons. I believe the geek store in the mall may have had a Pokemon tournament going, but I couldn't say for sure. And there were very few cosplayers, since the cosplay contest would have been on Saturday.

We did end up with some nice merch and I do like that the vendors are spread throughout the mall and that QuadCon will rent out empty store spaces for the weekend. But I also feel some vendors probably don't get much traffic, depending on where they are assigned - especially anyone who was stuck down by the old Sears location, since Sears hasn't relinquished the lease on that space for anyone else to move in (as I understand it, anyway).

Oh, and yes, there was Pokemon Go. I actually have been playing less of it since my pregnancy, but I definitely still make sure to have it out if we're with friends and doing some event. Because there's likely to be plenty of people, which means more Pokemon spawning. And the mall has some Gyms/Pokestops.

It was a nice way to kill an afternoon. I really don't have as much in paying to attend QuadCon anymore, but it's fine when I can attend for free at the mall.

The city lights were dimmed by a heavy fog. There weren't many street lights here anyway, in the empty parking lot. The palm trees cast long, ominous shadows, even though Anthony couldn't see their leaves. He passed a garbage bin that hadn't been emptied in a while. 

"If you say so."

2. The eye of the storm (Noah/Shayne, rated T)

"Look Noah! It's snowing!" Shayne exclaimed while looking out of the window. A little cloud appeared on the glass where he'd yelled.

Noah made some hot coco for them both, all thoughts about the illuminati long forgotten.

3. That's so us (Ian/ Amanda, rated T)

Listen, I am going to carry you over the doorstep.

"That's so us."

4. Eye contact (Ian/ Anthony, rated T)

The crinkles around Anthony's eyes when he smiles and laughs. His proud little smirk when he talks about what they have accomplished together.

They go back inside.

"Hey Amanda," Courtney sang in a character voice.

It was time to film their first video of the day. They walked into the studio together, hand in hand.

Shayne got a notification. He sat in the lunch room at the Defy building after filming a Smosh sketch. He looked at the e-mail he just received on his phone. His colleagues were all gasping, yelling and some were even crying. Everyone had gotten the same message:

"Yeah, they sure are," Shayne said, a bit loud.

"Antonio! I'm so stoked you're coming with to Quadcon! Do you wanna travel alone or shall I pick u up? My jeep is already packed w all my gear haha! Please lmk?"

Damien looked at Anthony with a new found love. When he wasn't acting, and was totally himself, he was such a sweet soul. Ugh. Hot AND kind. But Damien didn't feel self-conscious anymore. "That hottie over there? Mine!" Damien smiled.

9. Three's a party (Ian/ Anthony/ OG, rated M)

Anthony kept close to Ian. But the thumping bass and beats in his ears made it hard to concentrate. The people in their group were talking but he could barely make out what they were saying. He looked around. Flashing party lights, people dancing, chatting, drinking. 

“Same time, next month? <3”

It’s possible that the clown car status of Twitter made me wonder what to do if that went away (or turned into a ghost ship). I have a number of accounts and manage not to use any of them very much. In this case, the potential of fewer choices actually spurred me to come here and write this.

Updates: Issue #1 of LOST IN THE WOODS is very nearly complete. Will G and I are releasing it the same way we did LOST IN THE WASH—three issues and the collection instead of a fourth issue. It’ll be worth it. A little time has passed in Isco, but the more things change, the more they stay the same.

I just finished 5RAGMENTA, an expanded collection of the first five FRAGMENTA books. Some changes at our printer knocked a couple of them out of print, so I decided to take the first five out and replace them with this. It’s 316 (!) pages, hardcover. It’ll go for $50. The first five FRAGMENTA, while different from each other, represent a specific phase of that project. It started as a dare to the rest of Candle Light Press to make art books. Once that door was opened, though, a lot of other stuff came out.

Coming very soon is THE WORLD WEST, an anthology by me, with art by Will Beard, Jeremy Smith, and Will Grant. It’s four loosely connected stories about why there are no vampires in Texas. Price TBD, but it’ll be 8.5x11.

And, yes, I am writing a new (third) TIRE. I’m done pretending there’s an end to this. Making it delights me in every way, so prepare your souls and soul-carriers. There’s seeking to be done!

As to actually appearing in public, I’ll be at the Quad Con Cedar Rapids on Feb 5, 2023. You can come see all the stuff I’ve been making from quarantine onwards. I did man a table with Will G and Carter at the Van Meter Visitor Fest in September, and it was fun. I am so rusty with my table banter, though. Y’all gotta come in Feb and help me practice!

QuadCon Peoria September 2021

On Saturday, September 25, we went to QuadCon Peoria. The event was running both Sat and Sun at Northwoods Mall, but we chose to just do the one day. And that was probably for the best.

Since the con was at Northwoods Mall, which is open to the public, attendance was free and there was no need to check in anywhere and get a hand stamp. Vendors were spread out through the upper level of the mall, as well as one of the empty storefronts near the food court. Card game tournaments were set up in the mall’s new comic store. There were video game tournaments scheduled for the same area, but they weren’t taking place while we were there (as far as I know, anyway)

.We wandered around a couple of times, saying hi to vendors that we knew, and browsing. We’d gotten to the con approximately 12:15 or so and planned to stay until the cosplay contest was over. Well before then, we were bored.

QuadCon attracts a great variety of vendors. It’s fun to browse and shop! But that can only entertain @lechevaliermalfet​ and I for so long. The card gaming tournaments weren’t of interest to us and there were no panels at this particular QuadCon. We were with friends, so we were able to pass the time by just talking/getting coffee/etc. Had we been on our own, we probably would have either gone home until the cosplay contest or gone to the Round One arcade on the lower level.

When the cosplay contest began, it was held on the lower level in the center court, so that it was visible from the upper level as well. Contestants were asked to strike a pose or two and then join a line for photos and a cosplay parade while the judges deliberated.

 We were on the lower level for this portion, and so it was easy to see and hear. We ventured to the upper level as the cosplay parade set off through the mall.

When awards were announced, we simply watched from where we were upstairs. However, it was very hard to hear who was winning what award over the general background noise of the mall on a Saturday.

In all honesty, I’m not sure that the mall is the best venue for QuadCon. On the one hand, having the empty storefront was a nice way to gather several of the vendors together - but an empty storefront isn’t exactly a welcoming environment. And while having people set up along the regular mall walkways was also a nice idea, I’m curious to know how well those vendors actually benefitted from the regular mall traffic. I almost feel like there were two crowds: mall shoppers and con attendees. And that the two didn’t overlap much. But maybe I’m wrong, who knows?

Damien scuttled to get his coat, his bag and his keys. He kissed his cats goodnight and opened the door.

"Oh, but this isn't fair..." went through Damien's head. It was like his entire world was spinning. He couldn't compare to THAT!

Anthony smiled at the text. Damien was so into cosplay and took gaming so seriously, it was cute. Really cute. Anthony smiled widely while closing his eyes. A bridal fantasy played in his mind; him and Damien walking through an adoring crowd of lesser larp-ers, all cheering and clapping.

It was close to midnight and Anthony was still scrolling through Instagram in his bed.

"Yes, your jeep will do just fine, thanks!"

He couldn't believe he got to go with Damien, and only Damien. He was so bad at group interactions. But one-on-one, they'd have so much fun, and bond more than they already had. Hopefully Damien would like him.

Damien was so interesting to Anthony. He was like this dark prince, with a vast body of knowledge he didn't flaunt about with. But sometimes he'd say something implying pools of wisdom Anthony couldn't wait to jump into with him.

Anthony really hoped Damien would like him! And not think he was soo extreme or something. He knew he could be a bit 'much'. But as much as he tried to temper his intense personality, however many therapy sessions he booked... he couldn't help it.

Anthony also knew that Damien had something of a 'manual' so he hoped that they could trade off their quirks and come away somewhat even.

"Oh, Damien..." Anthony thought before he fell asleep.

Damien looked in the mirror. His simple looking but actually intricately and carefully made white vest fit him. Maybe, maybe it was a tad tight around the waist. But around his neck it was nice and loose, and the stings were neatly strung through the holes, but not 'too' neatly. His white silver hair styled to look messy, his dark roots matching the dark circles under his eyes.

He was Astarion.

Clive stood there. "Oh, but this isn't fair..." went through Damien's head. It was like his entire world was spinning. He couldn't compare to THAT!

"Hey, you look great! But, are you okay, Damien?"

Clive, or a somehow hotter version of Clive was looking at him with slight concern. How was this possible? Anthony had straightened his hair into a shiny Anime style. The leather pants FIT him, like they were made for his legs and his legs alone. The tattered cloak looked so well constructed... Anthony looked out of this world beautiful. The kind of beautiful that makes you sick, that makes you want to vanish, that makes you want to get away from it but you can't because you're mesmerized.

"You look so fucking hot, Anthony."

Anthony giggled. Thank god, that snapped Damien out of it.

"Why thanks, you look hot yourself!" Anthony was lucky he was so bad at fake-flirting. His pathetic swagger and negative charisma made up for his insanely good looks.

"Well, I guess Astarion's the side-kick tonight."

"What do you mean?"

"I can't compare to you, look at yourself! It's like you're the brand name and I'm the Dollar Store rip-off version."

"What? What are you talking about, look at your hot open vest, like the vampire vibes are strong, man! Women can't resist a good vampire."

"Let's be honest though, they won't even look at me if I walk next to you. I'm not attractive like you. Let's just get to my car."

Anthony kept giving Damien side-glances on their way to the convention. It made him even more self-conscious. He had to refuel so he stopped the car at an otherwise abandoned gas station. Anthony kept looking at him, but didn't say anything.

Damien quickly got out and took a deep breath. As long as Anthony didn't speak, Damien was beyond attracted to him. He even got goosebumps. Or was that the cool night breeze? He paid the machine and wanted to get back into his car, but saw Anthony wasn't inside anymore.

Damien turned around, and there Anthony stood, much closer than Damien was used to or comfortable with. But he was exhilarated by it now. Anthony's black eyes had a red glow to them, even though it was probably Damien's car lights. His red shirt somehow showing his abs. And now Anthony's hands grazed Damien's waist.

It was exactly the area Damien worried about. His belly, he didn't have abs like Anthony. But Anthony rubbed him up and down, massaging with his thumbs. They both parted their lips and Damien whimpered something- but whatever it was, we will never know because Anthony locked him into a kiss.

Damien took a step back but Anthony took one forward. They bumped into Damien's jeep and Anthony grabbed Damien's wrists and pushed them against the metal.

"Don't you ever dare to tell me that you're not attractive, Damien," he growled. Then he licked Damien's neck and bit, rough and hard, and Damien moaned just a bit loud. Luckily, nobody was there.

Anthony pushed his leg between Damien's legs, forcing Damien to reveal he had a hard-on. He smirked and pulled Damien's hand down to his crotch. Anthony was hard too.

Were they really doing this?

"So, do you want to fuck me?" Anthony asked, panting, right next to Damien's elf-shaped ears.

Damien didn't give an answer but grabbed Anthony's slender torso and pushed him against the car instead. He had him pinned with his back to him now. Anthony laughed. "That's more like it! Take control, Damien!"

Damien unbuckled his and Anthony's pants, and massaged Anthony's ass. "Yeah, that feels so good, Damien! Now, fuck me!"
