an, kinda bad but i had the idea??? also, i’m working with the reqs soon!!!

it was rare natasha had time to go out for leisure, more so, to shop. but here she was, natasha romanoff shopping at thrift shops and markets.

this one road in new york was slammed with sellers and all sorts of things to buy.

natasha had bought a few vests she thought yelena would like, also some for her to match. she’d bought little trinkets to fill her room up. she had been dragging her shopping bags for about two hours when she reached the end of the market, a book stall.

hundreds of books were stacker on top of each other but the one of top caught natasha’s eye.

pride and prejudice

in the red room, sure natasha had read books. well.. books how to seduce men, and basic knowledge. but never for her own enjoyment.

she picked the book up, flipped through its pages seeing annotations here and there but she didn’t mind, handing the shop owner a couple of dollars before she made her journey back to the compound.

it was a quiet weekend at the avengers compound, not much missions. “hey nat! ohhh, what did you get?” wanda immediately eyed the eco bags on natasha’s wrist.

“just saw like a flea market or some thrifting- i don’t know honestly.” “the one near that shawarma shop we go to?” “precisely. i also got you this lamp, you said you broke yours”

natasha handed wanda a clear pink tinted lamp with crystals hanging from the top. “oh nat i love it! thank you!” wanda jumped across the couch and hugged natasha “no problem, witchy” natasha laughed, making her way to her room.

she took a quick shower before unloading all the things she got on her carpet. she put all of yelena’s things in one bag and started to put her things in her laundry bin.

when everything was sorted, she picked up the book and sat on her bed.

it was a book with good condition considering she paid 2 dollars for it. she got her reading glasses out and started to flip through the pages, immediately seeing clean and beautiful cursive black writing.

on the cover page it says, “01/01/2023 my love, i have my whole heart to give to you and it starts by the pages of this book. with little annotations, i hope you love this book as i do you.

all the love, y/n”

love was never in the cards for natasha but boy, would it not be nice to receive this.

as natasha ventured through the pages of this book, she found a certain comfort in the cursive writing she knew she was not meant to read.

little comments like “i bet she’s as beautiful as you” “you remind me of this line” “i want us to experience this” were enough to get her hooked till dinner time.

“nat, dinner” wanda knocks on the door before rushing to the kitchen. natasha had made it more than halfway through the book.

she reached the confession in the rain and one writing in red caught her eye. “no love is ever the same. but know my love for you is bursting with all kinds to give” natasha had fallen in love with the words from a person she doesn’t even know.

she made her way to dinner, nose nuzzled in the book. “nat, you read classic romance?” yelena points out “mhm” natasha sets the book down, remembering her page.

“i got you vests and left them in your closet” natasha stabs a french fry before eating it as natasha does a little ‘yes’ air fist.

natasha didn’t stick around for dinner conversation. instead, she grabbed a milk tea in the refrigerator and retreated to her room to read.

it was 1 in the morning when natasha finished, reaching the last blank page. the words took her by surprise.

“09/01/23

it’s been 9 months without you, you didn’t read this book. i’ll be giving this to the book shop down the block and you will never read the words i longed for you to hear. i hope you’re happy with your new life, truly.

natasha shut the book with a deep breath. along the pages, she had been looking forward to that annotation in the end. natasha took it as a sign to sleep with all the excessive thinking.

yet all the black cursive words swirled around in her head that night, painting numerous people to who could be the face of these carefully said words.

the next morning natasha went on a personal mission to find you. why? she doesn’t know.

“Alright.” He says, his fingertips stroking over his beard. “I’ll give you a tour of the place and if there’s a room that you think suits your needs then you can have it but there are conditions...”

“Name them.” You say leaning towards him.

“You have someone walk you to your car every night, it doesn’t matter if it’s me, one of the other girls, or a Son. Someone makes sure you get in that car safely.” He states before continuing. “And if anything happens, and I mean anything, you bring it to me. I need you to promise me on that.”

A small smile graces your features, and he wonders if you know that somehow you light up a room.

That night, Black Noir patiently waited for Vought Headquarters to slowly drift to sleep. Once the building had gone silent and mostly everyone had left, the silent superhero made his departure and ventured into the night.

In front of Sarah’s house, concealed in shadows, he waited. He could hear her pacing inside, rap music playing in the background. And he imagined her form engulfed in a sweatshirt, hands wrapped in the ends of the sleeves. Her soft scent and dark hair. Her radiant smile and tired eyes.

He rounded the house and flipped over the fence. Walking with determination he found the backdoor left ajar; he pushed through, letting the warmth engulf him.

He found her in the living room where she was sweeping up debris from under the sofa.

Noir stood contemplating her amongst the wrecked furniture that once graced her living room. The blackened pillows, broken television screen and wobbling coffee table served as reminders of their fight and how they’d been at each other’s throats. Small holes littered the once pristine walls, and the ruined picture frames were stacked in a corner.

He picked one up and gazed at the serene woman in the picture. Although the glass in front of it was cracked, he could still see the happiness in her smile, the live energy in her eyes.

“Thanks for lunch,” her voice pulled him out of his thoughts.

She had yet to turn around as she finished sweeping, and Noir realized she must’ve known he was there the whole time.

She set the broom against the wall and turned to face him, arms awkwardly crossed in front of her chest. Her eyes caught the item in his hands.

“That was seven years ago, I went to Japan for my birthday.”

His eyes traced her in the photo, and the colorful city lights spilling across her face reminded him of their movie night together. In the dark, he’d been captivated by the way the television highlighted her features, first blue, then bright white, finally orange.

He nodded at the photo and delicately set the frame down, suddenly regretting how their fight had destroyed most of her home and belongings.

Sarah watched him, and he watched her, but there was no tension, no animosity left between them.

Finally, she switched her Dr. Dre playlist off.

“There’s cake left,” she began to fill the silence, “Would you like some?”

Noir simply turned and walked back into the kitchen where he pulled a chair out for her. Once she’d sat down, Sarah felt the ghost of his fingers over her hair as he moved away and went to sit on the other end.

Well, no cake then, she thought.

He produced a small notebook from a pocket across his chest and slipped a pen from his left boot. The one they usually used was at its last pages and Sarah wondered if he always carried an extra one on the off chance they met.

He signed, “New table,” and lightly knocked against the wooden surface.

Sarah nodded and kept herself from fidgeting.

“Why are you here,” she couldn’t help the question that slipped out. “I’m just confused,” she amended, “We fought, and now you know who I am, but you left me that note and bought me lunch, and—”

She paused when she saw him begin to scribble on the notepad.

She glanced at the page and leaned in.

“I was telling you the truth about why I’m doing this,” she licked her lips and while she could not tell, the man in front of her was immediately drawn to the small action. “I didn’t—I didn’t want to lie about my identity, but can you blame me? I thought you’d break me like a toothpick.”

He nodded, feeling something stirring within at the sight of her flushed state.

She leaned back in her chair, incredulous.

“So that’s it?”

Noir was surprised at her sudden outburst and brought his pen back to paper.

I do not condone hurting children

At that point, Sarah stopped and really looked at him, wishing she could look past his mask. She knew who he was and what his real job was; she knew he’d probably tortured and killed countless men. But he softened and was protective of children.

She needed to look him in the eyes and see what lied there. Would his eyes be emotionless and passive, or would she see passion, pain, and torment? As she watched him fidget under her gaze, she was reminded of his reaction upon learning that she too had been subjected to testing.

And then she remembered the light webbing of scars over his hands in the sink.

He added a few words. No more blind trust. He added, one-sided trust.

Sarah glanced at the page and was momentarily speechless at his confession.

“And do you trust me?”

He nodded. You are good. You want to help people.

The woman in front of him read the words and let them sink in. He was questioning his loyalty to Vought, she realized. Maybe, after years of blindingly carrying out Vought’s orders he’d grown tired of being left in the dark. Maybe, the fact that the test subjects were children had landed hard, hitting a sore spot within.

They will not find you

She watched him clench the pen, the point still against the page. She scanned him, noting the tension in his shoulders and the way his other hand pressed against the table’s surface. Homelander following her kept replaying in front of his eyes, like a broken record player. Homelander waiting to catch her alone, asking for her name and allowing her to call him John. Homelander acting so pleasant and personable was a disgusting façade, and Noir had felt the urge to knock him into a wall when he touched her.

And then the vicious cycle of thoughts and energy came to a halt. Her hand was small next to his as she lightly traced lines across his gloves.

He finished writing. Homelander will not hurt you

She gazed at him, and a feeling of safety wrapped around her like a warm blanket hugging her through the night.

this one may be even more contentiously defined than the previous, but for reasons both theoretical and practical, setting some form of boundary in this dimension is necessary for anyone who might set out on the venture.

by "published," what i am specifically concerned with here is publishers - officially released by any label (Asthmatic Kitty Records or otherwise) or some other publishing organization.

this excludes a fair amount of work that has been self-released online - Stevens has shared a fair bit on his tumblr over the years not released elsewhere. to some this might be disappointing, and it's clear that this is misses what others might consider 'official'. "The 50 States Song" is a good example - a fully studio-recorded version of a tune often performed at live shows, namely in the Illinois touring era. fun song, completely polished, but shared via Stevens's tumblr. some might be inclined to include for these qualities, but from there it'd be a matter of including every original track of audio that's ever been published there. the practical limitation is that i don't think i'd be able to find anything that's ever been on there or elsewhere, since much has been taken down. the theoretical limitation is that there's a question of choice that emerges considering the many different version of chicago that have been officially released via AKR and the 'barebones' demo version shared online. i don't think i have enough to answer that question, so i leave it unresolved for now and stick with what has been published by official sources.

and that does mean official sources - recordings of liveshows are another place of general interest. while i'm sure many hold "Majesty Snowbird" dear, you won't find it here. i think what i'm primarily concerned with here could be called 'tracks' more than songs. attempting to rank each distinct iteration of a given track as ever has been performed by Stevens would be both practically impossible, but theoretically run into that question of choice again. Carrie & Lowell - Live is on this list, as it is officially published. the 2015 North Charleston, SC concert was chosen, but not any other performance - i don't think it's right for me to decide that any other songs from other concerts should be included just because i feel like it.

i'll also clarify that i'm emphasizing the "public" in publication. there are a fair few items released for limited and private distribution. practically it's difficult to obtain high quality recordings of all of these given their scarcity, and theoretically i think it gets to the idea of an artist as a public figure of sorts. the discussion to have here is the Christmas songs, which were originally released as EPs each year shared with close family and friends, later remastered and compiled into Songs for Christmas and Silver & Gold. i had originally ranked songs from the 2008 private EP, Astral Interplanet Space Captain Christmas Infinity Voyage in part because the tracks are radically different in arrangement from the compilation release. but snooping around for others and realizing that much smaller variations existed with other volumes as well, i ran into a bit of a wall about the question of what degree of artistic choice is necessary for separating the difference. public release became the dividing line and has ultimately maintained a bit of my sanity in this process.

but yeah, insgesamt, this list should include any from Stevens officially released prior to September 2022. there may be some errors with inclusion/exclusion, but i promise i've been as thorough as i can.

**part of the reason i include collaboration efforts where others might not is because i think it's also important to note that none of Stevens's work exists in isolation. while he is certainly the prominent force behind most of his works, many other incredible musical artists have contributed and shaped the songs you'll find here into what they are. from what i can tell, very few tracks here were created solely by Stevens. so i think it's important to recognize that when conceptualizing a "Sufjan Stevens song" and considering those pieces of art, if still as products from Stevens, not necessarily "of" Stevens himself. he gets close to that here:

***there is no formal quantitative methodology for how things are placed. i listened to things a bunch and then put them all around each other on a list - however, some questions seems to commonly emerge in my mind when doing so. how do i feel about the form of the song, what has been crafted/produced? how do i feel about the function of the song, what effect does the song have? and how do i consider my own personal preference/experience/bias when deciding to place songs?

- "Unofficial Sufjan Stevens" on youtube has not only made many previously scarce tracks more generally accessible, but has also described their origins in description. this made the process of tracking things down that qualified for this list a whole lot easier. funny enough, they uploaded two tracks in the last week that finished the collection, such that everything on this list should be available for anyone to stream.

-i also referenced a few items from archival work as conducted by fuckyeahsufjanstevens, which was also important in confirming the origins of a few items.

ultimately, this is my list as made in this moment (well, several moments of working through everything). i have set parameters of what's to be ranked and ultimately ranked them at a particular time in the world and my life. i try to explain myself (ie my choices or occasionally literally my Self) at points throughout, but let me be clear that nothing here should be taken as particularly literal or complete. my feelings about and relationship to tracks here are usually more complicated than my textual language allows, so sorry for not being able to justify why one of your top 10 tracks doesn't even crack the top 200. if i know you, i'd chat with you about it, but if i don't, i'm not interested in hearing from you. please take it to a forum and discuss your praise and disagreement there.

this is certainly one of the ways to experience a discography. foolishly i assumed this project would take about a month, but it's been an ever present aspect of this past summer (though, admittedly, in waves of productivity).

but it was an exhausting and frustrating process. simply trying to track down every qualifying song for integrity's sake was challenging enough, but the process of ranking? such a fickle thing. and at many points the decisions i'd make feel arbitrary to the point where i'd think a tier list would have been a much more clear picture about how i feel about each song, maybe making it look like how age in a population usually gets represented

a random example of a thing somewhat specific to my minimal experience with global development. but anyways, making some kind of visual shape to attempt to depict my feelings, to embody the feelings about the work as a whole. but really there is no work as a whole at any moment. unless you're perceiving every song at once, all you have are assumptions and essences that you make at a given moment, and then attempt to compare.

so, while i might not have felt particularly inspired by trying to make placements for a thing with placements ever changing, the chance to look at every song and be forced to listen and compare was really quite nice. if not as a whole, one begins to recognize various smaller threads and motifs made throughout the work. as commonly discussed outwardly as talk of Stevens's mother, or as myriad stances with the abrahamic God, or even just a few musical lines that really sound alike. it's simple things, but i really do feel like i have a better understanding of those unifying themes, which gives the listening experience of each in this way just a bit of flare.

but on the whole, i found myself yearning for the experience of the "order" of any given album. how each song functions in those contexts for me has always been some of my favorite parts in an album - an experience cultivated for a more intentional journey over however many 10s of minutes compares to a couple of feelings over a handful. (this probably makes some placements more clear). and until this list is released, i have found myself held back in an enjoyment of a given song with just the lingering thought of comparison, trying to find some comparative fault that makes it worse. Dislike, Not Fun, Would Not Recommend. I'm grateful for all the things I've heard in a new light and found a greater appreciation for, and am looking forward to listening to it free from the bounds of this process.

anyways, in summary: each sufjan stevens song is either gay, about god, both, or neither. but there's always more beneath the surface to greet you - what you find is what you're listening for, whether you know it or you don't.
