I read a bunch of early science fiction a few years ago for research, and amongst the slop of misogyny raised The Stainless Steel Rat, in which the protagonist tells to the hot criminal girl : "I don't care if you used plastic surgery. I did too and now we're both hot. Wanna make out ?"

We must be as stealthy as rats in the wainscoting of their society. It was easier in the old days, of course, and society had more rats when the rules were looser, just as old wooden buildings have more rats than concrete buildings. But there are rats in the building now as well. Now that society is all ferrocrete and stainless steel there are fewer gaps in the joints. It takes a very smart rat indeed to find these openings. Only a stainless steel rat can be at home in this environment.

look, op makes an interesting point about background info/providing the reader with a lot but at the same time i am deeply confused by what they mean here.

sure, not all sci-fi is an allegory (op alludes to the franchise as being one later) or has a message per se......but also.....like? a decent amount of it does? that's kind of the point in a lot of cases? and background isn't always given in those either? what's the point here with making the distinction? is it 'story' vs 'essay'? i'd still take issue with that.
