I loved this... This book is all about tension and perspective... I think it’s the best thing I’ve read from Charlie Jane Anders. I’m going to need this in every format.
I adore this thoughtful response to Lessons in Magic and Disaster from Cannonball Read

[O]verwhelmingly the aspect of the book that resonates most deeply is that grief and pain, especially the sort that families experience, take so very long to heal, take so very much work and so very much grace and kindness, because people who are wounded are not kind — they can’t be; they’re too busy hurting — and the pain of a loss is a thing that will not abate without time, intervention, and maybe a little magic.
OMG I love this DailyKos review of Lessons in Magic and Disaster

I have lost count of how many stories I've consumed in which a father behaves selfishly, even cruelly, only to be redeemed in the end. But when it comes to mothers, we demand nothing less than perfection. Woe betide any mom who doesn't always put her children first, sacrificing her own happiness.

The latest issue of SFX Magazine reports that I am "powered by P-Funk."
Fact check: TRUE.

[A] smart read with beautiful language... dive into this one ready for a full emotional spectrum, knowing that you’ll come out the other side feeling expanded for having read it.
I loved what Paste Magazine had to say about Lessons in Magic and Disaster

At the delightfully named Disciples of Boltax blog there's a wondrous review of Lessons in Magic and Disaster:
It's "about love and loss and parenthood and childhood and how to exist in the world. This book made me laugh and it made me sad in all the best ways."

There’s the gagging ouroboros of history... you’re beating your fists against a wall that bears the indents of countless fists, going back forever.
Over in Autostraddle, I write about queer generational trauma: how it works, and how to tell stories about it.

Hi, Charlie! Will you be selling Never Say You Can’t Survive at WorldCon during your signing? Just debating if I should buy it from a shop here.
Thank you for asking this! I don’t actually sell my own books at WorldCon, but there are book vendors who sell books and you can get books from them for me to sign at my signing. I think it’s a fair bet that the booksellers in the dealers room at WorldCon will have NSYCS for sale because it’s still a book that sells a lot of copies pretty reliably.
But I can’t guarantee it’ll be there, so if you want to make sure to have a copy for me to sign, you probably should snag it from a local bookstore. Hope this helps!

How do you know if an idea is better for a novel or a short story?
I used to have a clear sense of what would work as a novel versus short fiction... until I realized I was wrong. Now I deliberately write novels with all the hallmarks of short stories.

Ok just a moment for a rant and forgive me if it’s a hot take but…
I am so entirely sick of the writers making Spock more human. Literally what is the point??? Especially in these prequel series???? HAVE YOU SEEN TOS?? Like yeah mans is a little more human than your average Vulcan but like in reality he was still very very much logic oriented HENCE THE POINT OF HAVING BONES THERE!!!!!! One is the logic one is the emotion THATS THE POINT!!! Why are we changing this???? ALSO why is everyone acting like it’s a bad thing that he’s more Vulcan?? Like the only one with a problem with it in TOS that I remember is my main man bones and even then it was MOSTLY just picking fun or being annoyed with the sass JUST LET HIM BE HIM!?? I DONT GET IT!! THEY’VE MADE HIM INTO AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT CHARACTER AND ITS PISSING ME OFF THE AOS MOVIES DO IT TOO AND I JUST DONT UNDERSTAND??? Let my mans just be logical in peace!! HE DOES NOT NEED TO BE MORE EMOTIONAL TO BE LOVED!!!! (by fans and other characters *cough cough* Kirk)
The only acceptable exception to this was the episode where they literally made him human. I strangely liked that episode
Thank you for listening to my Ted-talk
PS can someone please acknowledge how important Bones is to the dynamic??? He’s not just a side character he is an integral part of the crew. JUSTICE!!!! Im sorry I just love him okay???

STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES - AUGUST 3, 2005 - FANZINE ART: GREATER CALIFORNIA K/S
The spirk fanzine was printed in 1985, and the fabulous Gayle F. created the gorgeous color cover art.
A few years later at a "slash" or spirk convention, extra covers were auctioned off for charity, and I was fortunate to come home with one set. I've had them framed and they hang in my living room.

I always love it when Karla J Strand and co write their "reads for the rest of us" book recommendations. It's never anything but essential.
So stoked they included Lessons in Magic and Disaster in their latest list:
