With traditional road fuel prices at record highs, those with deep pockets who can still buy new cars will likely continue to favour plugins, so the plugin share of new car sales should continue to rise. But against the backdrop of the above industry headwinds, one has to wonder at the economic health of the auto makers who are providing these vehicles. A few relatively wealthy buyers of new cars who want plugins are not going to sustain Germany’s entire auto industry (nor wider economy), and the millions of jobs involved.
P.S. German politicians and businessmen can thank Angela Merkel for the energy crisis! Germany has long received warnings and evidence of the Kremlin's threat to Europe's energy security, all of which has been doggedly ignored for a long time...

Stellantis is on a roll in Europe when it comes to electric vehicle sales, with the Franco-Italo-American group overtaking Tesla in the first half of the year and closing in on Volkswagen Group. Stellantis sold 105,413 BEVs in H1 2022 in Europe, compared to Tesla's 78,277; still, the Model Y was the best-selling EV with 39,969.
The automotive group born from the merger of France's PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles aims to become Europe's top seller of battery-electric vehicles, ahead of Volkswagen and Tesla. (..)The figures include registrations in the 27 countries of the European Union plus the UK, Switzerland, Iceland and Norway; data from Portugal, Sweden and Finland were not available(..)
P.S. The key to Stellantis's success here was an almost affordable price, the availability of electric cars in dealerships and fairly good technical parameters (not too expensive 45/50 kWh battery, decent range and charging speed for longer trips)!
If Stellantis finally implements LFP battery technology and slightly increases its battery capacity to around 49/54 kWh hours or slightly improves the energy efficiency of its electric cars, then this legacy automaker would have a very good chance to really compete with Chinese automakers and Tesla in European car market...
Legacy automakers need to remember that you can make the best top of the specs electric car, but if it's too expensive, takes too long to deliver to customers, and it can't be charged whenever you need, then you will NEVER beat a competitor who can to mass produce electric cars and deliver them at a reasonable price, and ensure their daily operation. Stellantis’s engineers are very close to resolve affordable EV manufacturing problems faced by legacy automakers in Europe...They urgently need to take the next step: learn the use of LFP batteries and develop a new platform specialized for electric cars with better energy efficiency
