all that I seem, is a shadow of a shadow of a dream within a dream
made using my watercolor-pencil crayon technique but in digital. it actually produces a similar effect with less hassle but worse control over the watercolors, very interesting... very interesting indeed
also this musical has some very nice 80s

i was gonna add some of the weird info i've picked up about steve balsamo in that ask i sent to the bizarre blorbo poll runner but i didn't want to send them a super long message so i'm putting it here. listen to me. before he got the part of jesus on the west end he did a passion play for school and when he was on the cross he felt certain that he "was going to do this again". he had a weird daydream/vision of himself in a recording studio with meatloaf and when he got to the recording studio for the jcs album it was the same room from his dream. also ted neeley (former jesus) was a backup singer in meatloaf and this guy just had no idea until ted told him. and he was like holy shit. he saw what he thought was the face of a demon at the time when he was on the cross on the west end. he now believes it was either fake blood that dripped into his eye from his forehead and/or the energy of past productions of dracula within that theater somehow projected the image into his brain?? he believes in manifestation and synchronicities. he is a big fan of carl jung. his jesus hair and facial hair was all natural and he didn't even grow it for the musical, he just already had it like that. he was in a band. he sheds real tears every time he sings gethsemane. one of his choir teachers told him he couldn't sing. he got into a performing arts school by accident. he has one of the most gorgeous voices i've like ever heard. in the documentary about the 90s west end production of jcs, he wears this cunty little choker with this huge pendant hanging off it for like 90% of his out of costume scenes

obsessed with these two images.
#i wish there were more recordings of his run on the west end esp bc he's said that their take on the show was more bloody/gritty#i imagine something like the 2012 swedish production? not sure what qualifies as gritty#i could be misremembering the thing about dracula like it might've been that bram stoker just wrote it there#but basically something significant involving dracula happened at the theater he was performing at and he believes he might've picked up on#like the dracula vibes lingering in the theater#when i saw him for the first time i was like oh ok this is a classically trained british theatre guy#nope absolutely not the case and also he's far stranger than i imagined#jcs#jcs 1996#steve balsamo

I watched a video a while back where they were discussing how modern movie musicals seem to underperform at the box office and they were trying to figure out why.
I have a theory.
People who like musicals like singers who can really fucking sing.
They do not like famous actors who can kinda/sorta sing.
I just started Wonka. And Timothée Chalamet is a certified cutie pie and a great actor. And if he were singing at the karaoke bar I'd be like, "Hey, that's pretty good!"
But then if, say, Steve Balsamo went up after him...
youtube
I'd probably forget Timothée ever existed.
I think they should take the 90s Disney animated film approach. You get one big name actor who can use their personality to make up for the fact they can't sing. Your Robin Williams and Jeremy Irons types. Then you hire *actual* singers to do the rest of the singing.
You could even... lip sync. *gasp*
They did that all the time back in the day. I think as long as you don't try to Milli Vanilli the situation and are honest, no one will care as long as it is good singing.
Girl you know it's true.
