Switching to rock and roll, Rachel Sweet signed to Stiff Records and released her first album, Fool Around, in 1978, dropping out of high school to concentrate on her career, although she was still required to devote time to her studies. Sweet was backed by The Records on the Stiff Records tour in 1978. The album was a critical success, but sales were poor, although she did have some success with the single "B-A-B-Y" (a cover of the 1966 Carla Thomas song), which was a top-40 hit in the UK. The record label generated some controversy by pushing a Lolita-like image for her.

""NEW ROSE" WAS A RAW, VISCERAL, CLASSIC THREE-MINUTE POP SONG..."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on a record shop advert/poster for THE DAMNED's debut vinyl single, "New Rose" (with a B-side and cover of "Help!" by THE BEATLES, of all bands), released by Stiff Records in October 1976.
"It was an amazing experience because the idea was to capture the essence of the band – the live essence of the band. And if we had a big fancy producer, a big studio, and spent time, I don’t think we would have gotten that. Instead, you got this perfect encapsulation of seeing that band live, and it was an explosion of sound that was very rudimentary in production. In fact, no production – just the volume was set. I remember singing in the hallway because there was too much of the music coming into my microphone. I had to sing out there with the door shut, and it was still very loud because everything was full volume. There was barely enough room for the band when we recorded it, but it was a fantastic experience."  Likewise, Brain James told the Guardian:  “We signed to Stiff to do a single, and Nick Lowe produced us in a tiny eight-track studio. We spent more time in the pub round the corner than we spent recording, but Nick captured how wild we sounded.” That tiny eight-track studio was Pathway Studios in London. Dave Vanian recalled a quick and energetic recording experience for both the single and their first album: ""New Rose" was a raw, visceral, classic three-minute pop song. My famous spoken intro – “Is she really going out with him?” – is from THE SHANGRI-LA'S "Leader of the Pack," which I adored. I’d just been clowning around, but everyone liked it so we kept it. We recorded a whole album – "Damned Damned Damned" – in two days flat. In those days, there was never much food around. We were fuelled by amphetamine sulphate and cider.”
“New Rose” was released by Stiff Records on October 22, 1976 – the first true single by a UK punk Band. The single’s B side was punk cover of THE BEATLES’ “Help.” The First album, “Damned Damned Damned” was also the first full-length album by a UK punk band. While the song wasn’t a massive hit, in terms of sales or chart rankings, it’s influence and historical importance is undeniable. It introduced the UK punk scene to the larger music public.  And took what was an underground – albeit loud – musical movement into mainstream awareness."

Pop Trivia Bites - On This Day: 27th Jan 1979
Ian And The Blockheads No.1 in the UK with ‘Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick’
It’s a funky track with jazzy flourishes and bizarre yet compulsive lyrics. These words being half-sung by an uncompromising ex Art Teacher supported by a walking stick, not exactly chart topping credentials. Yet despite all this it still grabbed a week at the top spot. Happy days.
Ian Dury had been lead vocalist with Kilburn And The High Roads during the early 70s. The band made a strong impression on the live circuit, but in 1975 they split after just two albums.
The following year Dury teamed up with guitarist Chaz Jankel whose music worked well with Dury’s witty lyrical style. Soon after this a stream of talented musicians came aboard. The Blockheads were born.
They were signed to Stiff Records and released debut album ‘New Boots And Panties’ in 1977 to commercial and critical acclaim. Following this they proved a huge hit on the Stiff Records UK tour. The single ‘What A Waste’ gave them their first top ten hit. So what next?
‘Hit Me...’ entered the charts at the end of 1978, eventually climbing to No.1 early the next year knocking ‘YMCA’ off the top. Dury himself made an unlikely pop star. He’d contracted Polio as a child yet his clever wordplay more than compensated for any physical limitations which may have kept less spirited characters down.
The success continued through the year with the album ‘Do It Yourself’ and single ‘Reasons To Be Cheerful Part 3′. However the Blockheads disbanded in 1981 and Dury carried on a solo career without reaching the same heights.
The next two decades saw Dury branch into acting both on screen and stage, not to mention co-writing his own musical ‘Apples’. He reunited with The Blockheads for the 1998 album ‘Mr. Love Pants’ receiving plaudits aplenty from the music press.
He sadly died from cancer March 27th 2000 aged 57.

An OG late-70s 45 for Devo’s classic cover of the Stones’ “Satisfaction.” Herky-jerky and geeky to the max, it is a glorious deconstruction (devolution!) and minimalist take on the original, wringing out every last ounce of sex that Jagger put into it. This copy is a UK pressing on Stiff. #

Album Number Two Hundred Sixty. “My Aim Is True” is the debut album by English singer-songwriter Elvis Costello. The album was recorded at Pathway Studios in Highbury, London Borough of Islington in 1976, over the course of six four-hour studio sessions, in a total of approximately twenty-four hours. It was the first of five consecutive #elviscostello albums produced by #nicklowe and cost £2,000 to record. The backing band was made up of members of Clover, but they were uncredited on the original release due to contractual difficulties; some early publicity for the album identified the backing band as "The Shamrocks". My copy is on #stiffrecords, under #columbiarecords - JC 35037 Costello had been performing in clubs and pubs in Liverpool and London since 1970 and had created some demo tapes, but he had had little success in obtaining a recording contract. When Stiff Records was founded in 1976, Costello submitted his demos there and found some interest, but initially they wanted him as a songwriter for #daveedmunds. #rockandroll #newwave #pubrock #theseventies #seventiesmusic https://www.instagram.com/p/CZFDr4MrlUf/?utm_medium=tumblr

One of the first bands I was in, at age 15, did a cover of @ElvisCostello “Mystery Dance”. The legendary @thewrecklesseric will be passing through on a little tour in April and YOU should be there. Eric is a great solo performer who engages the audience with both humor and wit- and, of course, with his phenomenal catalog that spans 40+ years. (If you listened much to my show on #wxox @artxfm , then you know that I consider his rather recent album, “amERICa” a pop-rock masterpiece.) Opening the show will be a subdued @drysummers !! Mark your calendars. #wrecklesseric #stiff #stiffrecords #louisville #howwelou #do502 #monnik #monnikbeerco @do502 @leoweekly (at Monnik Beer Co.)
