Our first task we were given to do for IXD302 is to come up with and explain 3 digital product ideas which we could create and make money off as designers.
Digital Product 1: Photography
Aside from being an IXD student I am also a photographer , I mainly focus on equestrian photography. I work at equestrian compeitions for different photography companies and work alongside a team of other photographers , each of us covering a different arena. I also do my own private work for clients , this can range from images of mares and foals for an upcoming sale to photoshoots of owners and their horses for them to treasure precious moments with their pride and joy.
Using my photograhy skill set I could branch out into Stock image photography and make my photos available for others to purchase and download to make use of. Another idea would be to begin to print my work onto canvases for sale.
Positives:
1. This is something I am already experienced in and am pretty confident in. It's not something that is difficult for me to do.
2. I already own photography equipment and a range of different lenses so I wouldn't need to put much money towards this idea.
3. Photography is something I have a passion for and enjoy , so I honestly wouldn't even feel like I was working which is a huge bonus for me.
4. Equestrian photographers are rare , in NI alone there are only around 5 well established equestrian events photographers.
Negatives:
1. A worry for me is trying to come up with what sort of stock images people would be looking for as there are already millions of stock images available for the public to purchase.
2. There are already so many well establish stock photographers in the world , would I just be a needle in a haystack and would my work go unnoticed?
3. Would people actually want to buy my work printed onto canvas ? How many people would actually want a giant canvas of a horse to put up in their house?
Who would this product be for?
Technically my products could be for anyone to purchase. I guess the stock images would be directed more towards those who have a career in editing images. I know from experience that when I am doing a photoshop job for a client I can find it really difficult to find a suitable background to replace the original background with in background removal jobs. So I do know that there is a need for more suitable background replacement stock images.
I guess my Canvas prints would also be for anyone , but more than likely I would focus on what I am good at for these which is taking pictures of things that go neigh. So this would probably be targeted towards horse lover based audience.
How might I build this product?
In terms of the stock images , I could literally create a list of different things i feel like the target audience need more off and would be interested in purchasing. For example a few weeks ago i needed to find a good stock image of a fancy library to use in a background replacement job , but I could not find one for the life of me. I would walk around the city and take photos of whatever I feel could be useful. I would create a large library of these stock images and then find a platform to sell them from.
In terms of the Canvas prints , I already have a large collection of images I could print onto canvas and sell. This is something I would frequently add too and I would most likely sell them from my own photography website and try create a platform for myself.
Business Model
To advertise my stock images I would really push the fact that these are recent stock images which are taken with editors in mind. I would push this as I feel like the current stock images available have been around for years! Personally I would like to see them updated and I feel like many others would. I would also sell the stock images in different packs based on a specific area , for example a background replacement pack , a landscape pack , animal pack etc. I would also then use the marketing tactic of having these packs "Marked down" in price.

anyone else turned off by banners/manips/faceclaims etc?
I know many writers/readers get a lot of joy from compiling visual media to go with their stories. I don't mean any disrespect, and I know I'm probably in the minority. I'm honestly a bitter old hag who mourns the day ffnet added story covers and wants to see if there are any other similarly minded hags around.
I'm not talking about art of scenes in a work, by the way. I mean banners, covers (usually a combination of manips and stock photograhy), links to pinterest boards with outfits/settings, face claims, etc.
At best, I ignore it. But if every chapter has a link at the bottom to external photos of the outfits worn in that chapter (bonus points if it was a party/gala/makeover), it does turn me off pretty severely. I find it distracting from the story and I start to suspect the author is writing their own fantasy wardrobe--which isn't a problem, as fanfic by nature is an exercise in self-indulgence, but it's not what I'm here for.
Similar with face claims, or manips involving actors. Use of real people's images makes me uncomfortable (for a boatload of reasons that aren't relevant here) but if I see an author promoting their story with manips and a cast of faceclaims, it makes me hesitate. Are they more interested in writing about the celebrity than the character? Don't they trust their writing or readers to create images without feeding it to us?
I'm really sorry if I sound like a pretentious bastard over here. I feel like a lot of this probably stems from my own lack of interest in creating visual media for my stories. It's why I couldn't stand Wattpad, and I genuinely hate that ffnet added covers (and they're not even optional!). But if you're into it, I'd love to hear why, because I have a feeling I'm missing something.
And if you're not into it, please tell me so I know I'm not alone out here in hag-land.

User Journey: Observation 2
After observing Gladine I wanted to compare it with another person’s user journey. Therefore i got Tai to sit down and walk me through what she would do to learn film.
First 3 questions she would ask:
1. Where to buy a film camera?
2. How do I load a film camera?
3. Where can I get film developed?
She started by searching for “Film cameras in NZ”
But the first few links takes her to camera stores which don’t sell second-hand film cameras, but rather disposables. Whilst speaking to her, she also mentioned that she feels like she resorts to disposables because she is scared that with her own limited skill that actual photos taken on a DSLR won’t come out properly. At least when she uses a disposable camera she knows that it will guarantee results.
Tai mentioned that she would spend quite a bit of time deciding which camera to buy and she would compare heaps of cameras together before making a decision. She would also look on TradeMe for film cameras but she is scared that they haven’t been tested and are broken.
When asked how she would be able to find Junktion the film camera store she said that she wouldn’t be able to. She would only be able to know the place if someone recommended it to her.
Tai also mentioned that she struggles to know what the film stock names mean. She didn’t know that it was the film stock that changed how the colours were not the camera itself. She believed in the idea of discussing with friends and photographers on film photography topics as she thinks that will be able to help her quite a bit with developing her skills.
In terms of learning film photograhy, she said she would go for YouTube, visual learning is important to her.
