"African rangers detailed harrowing first-hand tales of elephant poaching at a public hearing in Hong Kong on Tuesday, the latest attempt to halt wildlife trafficking through the Chinese-ruled city, as ivory traders defended their business.⠀ ⠀ Hong Kong, at the mouth of China's Pearl River Delta, is one of the world’s top global transit hubs for endangered species and their products, like ivory, shark fin, pangolin and rosewood.⠀ ⠀ The former British colony has lagged behind other places, including China, in implementing tighter regulations, or bans, on trading of ivory and shark fin.⠀ ⠀ The United States, Singapore and China have banned the ivory trade and the mainland will close down all such operations by the end of this year. Yesterday we celebrated Global Tiger Day with @wwfmy and watched a series of short documentaries about the efforts to protect our endangered Malayan Tiger. Fun selfies and videos aside - I was deeply saddened that not much has changed since I first got involved with campaigns to protect the Malayan Tiger almost a decade ago. The handful of tigers left in our jungles are not just threatened by loss of habitat - but worse yet, greedy poachers who are picking off these majestic creatures one by one to feed the need of ignorant rich people and their Neanderthal beliefs in magic powers of animal parts. We have only TWELVE UNARMED rangers protecting a jungle range twice the size of Singapore. I created this instagram account and I hope to raise awareness because most of us human being living in the city do not have the informations that what is happening on the other side on earth, especially rhinos and elephants .... I just saw a news that rhinos in the French zoo being killed by the ruthless poachers and now the Czech zoo announce that they will use a chainsaw to remove the horns of rhinos in their zoo to protect them from poachers!!!! In the black market, it cost 56400 euro per kg, I don't know what human are going to do with the horns, it is made of keratin, the same type of protein that makes up hair and fingernails, most of them just put at their home to represent their wealthiness.....Poor rhinos, I can't blame the poachers because there must be the true criminals who is powerful hiring poacher to do this....Education is important too, when surveyed 70% of Chinese people didn’t realise rhinos and elephants had to be killed for their horns/tusks. They were told elephants tusks/rhino horns fell out naturally and grew back like fingernails. This literally makes me so happy. To see a group of women coming together to help save the Elephants and Rhinos of South Africa. 

“The Black Mambas are an inspiration not only locally, but across the world to all those working to eliminate the scourge of the illegal wildlife trade.” Says Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the U.N Environmental Programme. 

Leitika Mkhabela, a Black Mamba ranger, was emphatic about the pride she takes in helping to keep the animals safe.

“I am not afraid; I know what I am doing and I know why I am doing it,” she said. “If you see the poachers you tell them not to try, tell them that we are here and it is they who are in danger.”

She added, “Animals deserve to live; they have a right to live. Do your part. When demand ends, the killing will end. Say yes to life. Say no to illegal rhino horn and elephant ivory.”

I for one am totally inspired by these women. They’ve truly touched a place in my heart that not many people can do.
