My friends who have never experienced flooding, and who are about to deal with it from this storm, please remember:
1. NO. YOU CANNOT MAKE IT THROUGH THAT WATER ON THE ROAD. I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU'RE DRIVING. TURN. AROUND.
2. DO NOT GO WADING THROUGH THE WATER. EVEN IF YOU JUST WANT TO SEE HOW DEEP IT IS. THAT. WATER. IS. CONTAMINATED.
3. IT IS CALLED FLASH FLOODING FOR A REASON. THE WATER RISES AND SURGES IN A FLASH. STAY. HOME.
4. If you're at risk of flooding, raise up any of your belongings now. Put the legs of tall things in buckets. Know where your important documents are.
5. Stay safe.

Safe in the Storm
Bucky x reader
Summary: A storm outside the Avengers tower causes the power to go off, making you face your two biggest fears, but Bucky comes to the rescue.
Word Count: 1323
Tumblr media
Another peal of thunder shook the tower as your fingers curled around the blanket wrapped tightly around you. You squeezed your eyes shut harder than they already were, trying desperately to distract yourself from the storm raging outside.
You were trying to focus on taking slow, deep breaths as a bolt of lightning lit up your room, causing you to jump, even though your eyes were sealed shut. When the thunder cracked this time, it shook your room harder than all the others, and your fan slowly turned off. When you opened your eyes, the room was pitch black.
If there’s one thing you hated more than storms, it was the dark.
You quickly reached over to grab your phone, breathing exercises going out the window. You clicked on the flashlight, the bright light illuminating your room in an eerie glow.
You set your phone back on the nightstand, flashlight facing up, as you sat on the edge of your bed and took a deep breath, reminding yourself there was nothing to be scared of.
You stood up and grabbed the blanket from the end of your bed, wrapping it around your shoulders. You picked up your phone and headed to look for a flashlight.
As you padded down the hallway, all you could hear was the howling wind and heavy rain pelting the windows. You had only lived here for a few months, and still got lost sometimes, so you had no idea where to even start looking for a flashlight.
Thunder continued to roll as you finally got to the kitchen. Luckily, there were security lights in the tower that came on when the lights went out, so your phone wasn’t the only light you had. Since you had no idea where to begin, you set your phone down on the island and just started going through random drawers.
You found several junk drawers, filled with stuff like pens, pencils, scissors, tape and other miscellaneous things, but no flashlights. You were making your way over to some of the cupboards when all of a sudden, you heard a voice behind you.
“Y/n?” You instantly recognized the voice as Bucky’s, and you slowly turned around to face him. “What are you doing?”
“Looking for a flashlight,” you answered.
“What, the one on your phone not good enough?”
You quickly realized how silly it all was. I mean, you were a grown woman scared of the dark and a thunderstorm? How embarrassing is that.
Your face quickly flushed, not sure how to respond, when yet another crash of thunder shook the tower, making you practically jump out of your skin. You looked back at Bucky, and between watching you jump and seeing you shaking under your blanket, he quickly realized how scared you were.
You just sighed, waiting for a smart remark to come. A grown adult scared of a little thunderstorm and the dark was definitely a good target for his sarcastic jokes. But instead, he walked over, picked up your phone, and put his arm around your shoulder, guiding you to follow him.
“C’mon,” he said, “I have one in my room.”
You followed him down the hallway, not saying a word. He could feel you shaking under the blanket, so he began to move his thumb in small circles on your shoulder, trying to calm you down.
As you walked into his room, it was dark again, the only light coming from your phone that he was still holding. His arm dropped from your shoulder as he opened his nightstand drawer and pulled out a flashlight. Turning it on, he handed it to you.
“Here you go.”
“Thanks,” you mumbled, trying to hide your embarrassment. And as if you weren’t embarrassed enough already, thunder shook the tower once again, causing you to jump and drop the flashlight as you took it from his hand.
It hit the ground with a crack, but thankfully it was still working. Your breathing became labored as you tried to calm yourself, but it just wasn’t working.
Bucky bent down and picked up the flashlight, setting it up on the nightstand so it illuminated the room. He walked back over to you, putting his hands on your shoulders.
“Hey, it’s okay. It’s just a storm. It’ll be over and the lights will be back on in no time.”
Bucky had a way of speaking to you that just made you feel safe, and like everything would be okay. You had never seen this side of him before, but as his hands moved up and down your arms, you found your breath slowly returning to normal.
You took one final deep breath, closing your eyes, trying to calm yourself, when yet another peal of thunder set you off. Instinctively, your hands reached out and grabbed Bucky’s biceps to steady yourself, your hands barely fitting around half of them because they were so big.
“You’re okay, I’m right here. You’re safe,” he said, reassuring you.
You thought back to when you were young, running down the hallway to your parent’s room the second a storm started brewing outside. You would climb up into their bed and your dad would instantly pull you into a hug. And every single time, your dad would repeat to you: I’m right here, baby. You’re safe.
Without thinking, you took a step forward and hugged Bucky around the neck, just needing something, or someone, to hold onto. He was caught off guard at first, but then he wrapped his big, strong arms around your waist, lightly pulling you closer to him. His hand started moving up and down your back, still trying to calm you.
“Why don’t you lay down and try to fall asleep, hmm?”
You slowly took a step back, hands still on his shoulders, and all you could do was give him a little nod. He kept his hand on the small of your back guiding you to his bed that was perfectly made, looking like it had never been slept in. Which it probably never was, as Bucky still slept on the floor.
He pulled the blanket back, then took the blanket from around your shoulders as he stepped to the side to let you slip in. He walked over to the other side of the room and picked his pillow up off the ground, coming back over to lay with you.
As he laid down in the bed, his arms immediately opened, and you scooted into them. Your head rested on his shoulder as his arm slipped around your shoulders, his metal arm resting on your lower back.
You closed your eyes as he pulled you in closer, trying to focus on anything other than the storm. You focused on the heat radiating off of Bucky’s body, the strength of his arms around you, yet holding you softly as if you could break at any second. You focused on his breath, warm on your forehead, and the coolness of the vibranium on your back.
Suddenly, the storm raging outside didn’t seem so loud anymore. Your eyes grew heavier, the exhaustion of being up all night setting in.
Bucky’s hand continued its soothing motions, tracing gentle circles against your back. His steady heartbeat thumped beneath your ear, a quiet rhythm that drowned out the distant cracks of thunder.
“You’re okay,” he murmured, his voice low and steady. “I’ve got you.”
A deep breath filled your lungs, and as you exhaled, you felt your body relax fully against him. The storm still raged outside, but here, in the safety of his arms, it couldn’t touch you.
Your fingers curled slightly into his shirt as sleep began to claim you. Just before you drifted off, you felt the faintest press of his lips against the top of your head.
“Sleep, doll,” he whispered. “I’ll be right here.”
And for the first time in what felt like forever, you believed it.

Just a PSA, Hurricane Helene is going to be passing through my area starting some time tomorrow, so I wanted to take a moment to remind anyone who is in this storm's path to make sure you have:
1) flashlights or other light sources that are not just your cell phone -- cheap solar lights work great in a pinch; to charge them, arrange them around indoor lamps to get the most light exposure, or put them in your sunniest window:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2) you should have food and drink that is stable at room temperature and does not require anything to prep, plus a can opener, in case of prolonged power outages.
3) keep important documents such as birth certificates, passports, etc all in a safe location that is preferably waterproof; a ziplock bag, or a locking food container will work in a pinch.
4) find which area of your house is the sturdiest, without windows, and make sure your household knows to go there in an emergency, which includes Tornadoes; for some, this is a basement, for others it is a bathroom located away from an exterior wall, and for us, its a small hallway in the center of the house. Try to put extra blankets, pillows, and other cushioning in this area in advance both for comfort of everyone crammed into a small area, and also for additional protection, since you can wrap yourself up in pillows and thick blankets in an emergency; if you've got small kids, try to make sure everyone has their favorite stuffed animal to hug.
5) make sure everyone's pajamas are clothes that are comfortable and good for wearing in public, and that everyone has closed toed shoes on hand that can be thrown on at a moments notice and that everyone knows to put them on ASAP when an emergency alert comes through.
6) make sure all phones are fully charged, and preferably that you have backup power banks; if possible, have an emergency handheld radio on hand to listen to broadcasts. If you need to use a phone to watch local news livestreams, have one member of the house use their phone to stream while everyone else preserves their battery.
7) make sure you have any essential medications on hand in a form that is easy to transport, and if you have pets, make sure you have food, pet carriers, and leashes/harnesses, etc!
Stay safe, everyone!

Progress Report - 4/29/24
hello and happy birthday!
...is how this was going to start when I intended to post it this past Friday. But I spent my birthday as a side character in the hit 1996 movie Twister. By which I mean there was a really big tornadoful storm here, the likes of which I've never seen before. It's never a fun time when the words "historic" and "record-breaking" are involved.
But anyway! My birthday was a few days ago, and to celebrate I have a slightly belated gift for all of you!
A release date
That's right, we're back in business here in Speakerland 😁 I'm so relieved to finally return to some semblance of normalcy, and I'm very hopeful that I'll be able to get back to doing regular monthly updates again.
As for this one, the update will be going up on Patreon TONIGHT! I'll be uploading that momentarily, in fact. That means that, barring any strange game-breaking bugs or overly tangled code, the update will be out for public release on Tuesday, May 7th!
I just want to thank everyone one more time for your patience, and for all the messages of support 💙 it really does mean the world to me.
I think that's it for this time! I hope you all have a fantastic week with only mild-to-moderate tornadoes, and I'll see you all next week! 💙💙🌪️💙
