The next #collagemaster I’m studying is #ericcarle. I watched a few videos of Mr. Carle painting papers and building his characters. I was so fascinated, I could have watched him create all day. He makes it looks so easy, but it’s really not. I’ve been going crazy #painting tissue paper. I didn’t try to find out the kind of tissue paper Mr. Carle used. I just went with the gift wrap kind I had handy already. What a pain in the butt! I ended up doing a mixture of tissue paper and found paper because cutting tiny pieces of painted tissue paper also sucks. Though again I didn’t use a razor to cut shapes like he did, I used scissors, but still tiny pieces of tissue paper 🤬🤬🤬🤬 I now understand why his character pieces were larger than they appear in the books. I love my little #grouchyladybug though. I do like the idea of tissue paper and how the colors can change with layering. When I started #saillustration2 this term they had us come up with our Dream Portfolio of artists and styles we like and aspire to. A few are teachers I’ve had like @vanessabrantleynewton @juliedessine and @adolfoserra over the last year. And others I have found while doing masters studies of #picturebooks like @jonklassen @suzyleebooks @peterhreynolds @theartoffun @peterbrownstudio @shelleyjohannes @choochoojoey #ericcarle #leolionni #maryblair #ezrajackkeats I have learned so much from all of them and will keep learning more I’m sure. They are all so inspirational. Than we had to come up with our list of #100thingsilovetodraw This was hard. I’m still learning, but had I done this a year ago, I would not have made it to 100. Today I’m working on my homework for #illustratingwithcollage. We had to start with #sketches for characters we want to create in #collage. We’re supposed to do a human, an animal, and an inanimate object all using simple shapes. I figured I’d continue to learn how to use my #watercolorpencils while working on my next dummy. It’s definitely not gonna be the last revision of my story, so I figured I could learn and make a dummy at the same time. I’ve already decided that when I get my next set of pencils, I’m getting one with a wider variety of colors especially skin tones. For those of you that use them, do they usually break so easily or would a more expensive brand help that problem? Just wondering if it’s the softness of the watercolor or if just because I bought the cheapest brand to experiment with. Day 30/100 #the100dayproject Still pushing to get my homework done and playing with a #monochromaticpalette I forgot to duplicate my new line drawing yesterday and so I had to hustle to redo it this morning 😩 Hopefully I can get this one done today without tripping myself up further. I must say, I’m certainly learning a lot about #procreate that is making this process easier though I wish I figured out how to enlarge and move things around prior to this class. We had to do a Dear Duncan Empathy Exercise for my #craftingpicturebookstoriesclass So I used #thedaythecrayonscamehome by @drewdaywalt and @oliverjeffers and wrote a postcard to Duncan from Blue 🖍 I had wanted to say a few more things, but ran out of room. What do you do? It was a fun exercise though. I love all the Crayon books by these two. If you have kids, teach kids, babysit kids, etc., get these books. The @storyteller_academy #saillustration1 homework assignment this week was to #brainstorm an illustration idea using the three words - pig, chair, and confused. I came up with a few things, but nothing that said “draw me” so I turned to family for help and one of them said “person in a chair seeing a flying pig.” I loved it immediately and ran with it. Now I have to decide which one to blow up to an 8x10 finished piece and work on drawing confused faces since most of mine look more scared.
