"BANACEK" AMX 400
Made by Barris from the 1970 American Motors AMX for 70’s TV show "Banacek" starring George Peppard. The first major modification was to lower the overall silhouette by chopping 4.5" out of the top section with a 2" slant on the windshield posts. To further the extreme fastback image, long tapering windsplits are streamlined louvers extending f rom the roof line to the lower panel. A courtesy safety lighting system was installed utilizing the louvers, with full red taillight and stop lights, full amber lights for deceleration and caution, and a full green light for forward motion.
All four wheel wells have been re-radiuses with the top portion of the radius flared and extended into the center of the door in front. The rear extends to the rear of the fender. The frontal area has been lengthened fifteen inches with a matching lower pan and louvered grille installation. The rear fenders were also extended to follow the streamlined windsplits. The hood has twin canted tunneled forced air scoops molded into the hood panel conforming with the fender line. Saddle antique and walnut was used with color combination in the interior.
The exterior finish consists of Murano Pearl uppertone with coordinated Rustic Orange along the lower section. The interior sports twin bucket seats with head rests and safety belts. The rear compartment has been completely carpeted and the dash has matched naugahyde crash padding. The louvers front and rear have been chrome plated along the leading edge with textured paint effect. SS Cragar wheels with chrome outer rims support the Firestone Wide Ovals sporting white lettering on the black sidewall.hing vinyl, and the major portion of each is finished in Snowflake metalflake pearl, which includes multi-colors of white pastel blues and yellows.

1. One of The Best Ford Muscle Cars: 1968 Mercury Cougar GT-E This is one of the most overlooked performance cars from 1968. The 1968 Cougar GT-E, is one of the rarest cars and is incredibly valuable today, and we can see why. If the Road Runner was at the top of bare-bones performance, then the Cougar GT-E would represent the other side of the muscle car spectrum with a price that reflects that. You do not want to overlook this powerhouse of a car. A GT-E package would cost the buyer $1,311 alone, which is almost half of the price of an entire 383-powered Road Runner, when this car debuted in 1967. When the Cougar debuted in 1967, Motor Trend named it Car of the Year. Which came as a shock, as many would assume that title would go to the more gussied up Mustang. These two cars do have the same engine.
2. 1968 Ford Fairlane Torino GT It’s no shock that the late 1960’s inspired a rise of budget muscle cars that spread like wildfire. After the Road Runner’s success, every other muscle car manufacturer raced to get their cars on the streets ASAP. Ford did not want to miss out and redesigned the Fairline Torino in 1968 with a Mustang like fastback that streamlined this car for NASCAR’s speedways. This car’s new shape came in a variety of engine, 289, 302, and also 390. So Ford built 600 of these hardtops with a 428 Cobra Jet and C6 automatics. 193 of these cars come with a 3.91 rear axle ratio. The car itself doesn’t come with much decoration, simply a badge on its front fender.
3. 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator The turning point for the Ford Mercury Cougar happened in 1969 with the Mercury Cougar Eliminator. This car isn’t totally Mustang’s cousin, as it comes from Ford’s slightly more upscale division that came into its own this year. This car not only has a convertible, but also an Eliminator option giving this Cougar some fangs. This car is longer, wider, and heavier than the 1968 version. The 1969 car has the same 111-inch wheelbase wit three more inches than the Mustang, which gives the Cougar more legroom. This vehicle’s body has a different style than the Ford pony, with a sharp crease on the flanks from the nose to each side, This design ends just at the edge of the rear wheel arches, which is not that much different of a design from how the Buick Skylark stood out from the Chevy Chevelle. Similar to the Mustang, the Mercury Cougar had a redesign in 1969, gaining 3.5 inches in length, and 3 inches of width. 4. 1969 Ford Talladega This car is on its own mission. Ford was watching the taillights of faster cars like Mopar and GM muscle rivals in the 1960s and early 1970s. This car was named after NASCAR’s newest superspeedway, Talladega. The 1969 Ford Talladega was Ford’s answer to Dodge’s Charger 500, so Ford built the street version of this car so it could qualify for racing. This car is similar to the Mercury Cyclone Spoiler. For this car to be eligible to race, NASCAR only required Ford to build 500 units. Instead, Ford built 736 all with a C6 automatic, 428 CJ and a column shifter. To make the Talladega, Ford had to extend the Torino’s front ends by 15.5 inches, also adding a 30-degree slant and a grille that’s flush-mounted. Ford then modified the rear bumper with a V-shape and mounted it, altering the rocker panels so the car would have an aerodynamic benefit. This design also staggered the rear shocks. The design has a few emblems of T above the fake gas cap in the center of the tail and door handles. This vehicle comes in three colors, but all have black hoods.
5. 1970 Ford Torino Cobra The Torino was the follow-up to Ford’s speedway superstars. While the 1968 and 1969 fastback Torino might not have done well on the racetrack, at a Ford dealership, this redesigned car jumped 52 percent in sales. Motor Trend even named this series the “Car of the Year.” This new model was a little fragmented with a bolder look complete with a dozen various trim levels, many that were considered to be new. However, these resign really grabbed the attention of automotive media, making this car appeal to America’s high-performance set. 6. 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT Falcons were barely new in Australia in 1975. Since 1960 Ford offered a series of Falcons, with the twin being the Falcon four-door sedans that were sold in America. Since 1962, there were a few Austrailain market changes in design that were made in 1964. Ford of Australia started building its own signature auto-bodies under the Falcon name. It was the 1965 Falcon XP that was a make it or break it car for Ford. This car ended paying off when it was put head to head with its nemesis on the Australian market, The Holden. You might recognize the 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT as the car Mad Max drove, and you’d be right. But that’s not why this legendary Australian car is on our list. It’s because of this third-generation Falcon is legendary in performance for many reasons. Not only does this car look awesome, but it’s also a cross between the 1970 Torino Cobra and the 1973 Mustang Fastback. This car isn’t much different than it’s a generation before, but it does have a new front end and a twin-scoop hood like a Mustang. This car was made for gearheads, as it has a standard 351 Cleveland with 300 hp and a 380-pound torque. This is because of the lack of emission standards that were around when this car was made. These standards have since killed most performance cars in the United States. The 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT is four-speed, with a nine-inch rear end that is fitted with tall gears.
7. Shelby Mustangs The Shelby Mustang is a variant of the Ford Mustang that has higher performance value. This car was built by Shelby American from the years 1965 to 1968. Form 1969 to 1970, this car was then built by Ford. After the 2005 introduction of the fifth generation Ford Mustang, the Shelby was revived as a newer high-performance model, only this time it was built and designed by Ford. The famous 1965 Mustang Shelby GT 350, is a serious performance machine. Some buyers felt this car was too serious, so the next year the car replaced features like the fiberglass hood, adjustable Koni shocks, side-exit exhaust, and Detroit Locker rear diff were either removed, replaced, or just made optional. There was even a Paxton supercharger option in the 1966 design. The GT 350s were ideal for the track. Later the GT 500s were ideal for drag racing, as they were fitted with a 428 big-block. 1967 and 1968 Shelbys were able to go on low 14 second runs of quarter miles. There was also an even faster KR model made as well.
8. 1999 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning The 1999 Ford F-150 SVT Lighting, looks a lot different than these other muscle cars mentioned, but don’t let its appearance fool you. This car can be drag raced at 13.62 seconds at 101.16 mph, making this the faster ride of these muscle cars, which is impressive for a 4670-pound two-wheel pick-up truck. This car is the second generation of the SVT Lightning. You’ll see under its hood that there are hot rod steep sides. There’s also a supercharged 5.4-liter single overhead v-8 cam with a boost of eight pounds and 360 hp factory rating with 440 lb-ft torque. These trucks use a four-speed automatic transmission, a column shifter, and 18 inches, 295mm wide tires. This truck costs about $30,000, from 1999 to 2004 more than 28,000 of these trucks were made.

Custom Bikes Of The Week: 5 July, 2020
Voxman is back with an electric land speed bike designed to hit 330 km/h. Plus a wild Buell M2 Cyclone from France, and details of a collaboration between two storied British marques: Aston Martin and Brough Superior.
Buell M2 by Taverne Motorcycles It’s impressive enough that this fierce cafe racer is based on the clunky Buell M2 Cyclone. But it’s even cooler that the guys who built it started with just a motor. Florian and Christophe at Taverne Motorcycles in France started with just the 1200 Sportster motor from an M2, then sourced an M2 frame, and proceeded to kit it with a wide array of parts.
There’s a set of Triumph 955i forks up front, mounted up via modified yokes. The rear’s sporting a Buell X1 swing-arm, hooked up to a Shock Factory shock on custom mount points. And the wheels are 17” Aprilia RSV4 units, wrapped in Conti Sport Attack 2 tires, and stopped by a full Beringer brake system.
Taverne modified parts of the M2 frame, and then built an aluminum monocoque tank and tail unit to sit on top. There’s a faux oil tank under the seat, that holds the battery and some electrical bits, while the actual oil tank sits in the custom-made belly pan. The front fender and headlight cowl are custom too, and USV Racing came to the party with machined parts like the clip-ons, grips, rear-sets and a few smaller bits.
To squeeze a little more performance from the Harley motor, Taverne added a Mikuni HSR carb, high-flow intake and a custom exhaust. So it’s not only better looking now, but punchier and lighter too. Voxan Wattman Boutique French manufacturer Voxan first released the electric-powered Wattman in 2013, designed by Sacha Lakic—the man behind Blacktrack Motors. Now they’ve unveiled a new Wattman, purpose-built to attempt a land speed record attempt.
According to Wikipedia, Sacha penned this version of the Wattman too, with Voxan’s engineering team in Monaco squeezing max performance out of it. It was supposed to have had its record attempt already, but that’s now been pushed to July 2021. That’s when it’ll run at the Salar de Uyuni salt flat in Bolivia, piloted by none other than Max Biaggi.
There’s some interesting engineering hiding behind the Wattman’s streamliner bodywork. It features a double-wishbone front suspension system, and forgoes a front brake for the sake of aerodynamics and stability. There’s no parachute either, so Max will be relying entirely on a rear brake and enough runoff to slow down.
The Wattman’s motor puts out a bananas 317 kW (or 425 hp), with a 15.9 kW battery, good enough for a few minutes needed for a run. The battery alone weighs 140 kg—almost half the bike’s 300 kg overall weight. Despite the heat generated, the Wattman has no radiator, using a reservoir filled with dry ice to draw heat away from the motor and batteries instead.
It’s an intriguing machine, with an ambitious task: to hit a top speed of 330 km/h, and beat the previous record of 327 km/h. [Voxan Motors]
Yamaha MT-01 by Kalapea Garage Combining a 1670 cc V-twin motor with a sport bike chassis, the zany MT-01 is one of the raddest muscle bikes to ever hit the streets. This one’s been given a visual fine tune by Kaspar at Kalapea Garage in Estonia, and it’s all the better for it.
The Yamaha’s engine and main frame is stock, but Kaspar built a new subframe to hold a modified Ducati Diavel seat unit. Up front, he fitted the headlight nacelle from a Harley Sportster, with an LED light sitting inside. The original clocks are hiding behind it.
The fuel tank is mostly original, but the side pods have been replaced by a pair of hand-made fiber glass air scoops. And there’s some new carbon fiber trim on the tank, front fender, and where the new seat meets the OEM bodywork. The cockpit features Renthal risers and bars, and a set of Highsider mirrors.
Most of Kaspar’s man hours went into fabricating the stainless steel exhaust system, which terminates in a pair of SC Project cans. “It sounds like an old fighter jet on a flyby,” says Kaspar. The final finishes include a chic satin green paint job, with black on the frame and bronze on the rims.
Aston Martin and Brough Superior AMB 001 The AMB 001 represents a collaboration between two extremely British marques, but most of us probably can’t afford it. To prove that the other-worldy AMB 001 isn’t vaporware, Aston and Brough Superior have just released a glimpse of the first prototype putting in track time at Pau-Arnos in France.
Showing the bike on track is a big deal for the two companies, mainly because the limited edition AMB 001 is being sold as a track-only bike. And it’s big on performance too, with an intercooled, turbocharged 997 cc V-twin, which makes a claimed 180 hp. The motor is load-bearing too, and hangs off a CNC-machined backbone.
Everything about the AMB 001 blends performance and luxury, which is what makes it so appealing. The wheels are forged aluminum, the bodywork is all carbon fiber, and the leather seat looks as swish as anything you’d find in a luxury car.
There’s heaps of titanium too, and classy details like the Aston Martin wing badges, which are lazer-cut from paper thin metal, then applied under layers of clear coat.
But punting the track-only aspect of the AMB 001 does feel like a weird flex, considering it’s also being marketed as ‘automotive art for the motorbike connoisseur.’ We’re hoping that at least some of the 100 AMB 001s that are being made actually end up on the track, and not on display.

Salt Swept – CAL Auto’s 250 MPH ’34 Chevy Streamliner

It’s not that motorsports fabricators and engineers can’t create incidental masterpieces in machinery, it’s just that it’s a distant concern over the immediate goal: to go fast as hell. Part of this no-nonsense approach to building honestly just comes down to weight in many instances. Sure, a carefully machined, one-off wheel may seal the deal on the look of a custom build, but it also weighs a couple times over that of a flyweight forged piece. And typical pro-builder touches, like billet trim, is like stacking on lead weights.
That’s where building a land speed car has its advantages: weight isn’t a sin, it’s a blessing! So when Ron Cizek wanted to chase the salt, it was the right opportunity for builder Andy Leach to blend everything he’d learned from CAL Automotive Creation’s obsessive builds — like the Art Deco-infected ’30 Model A we featured in our January 2018 issue and the Ridler-winning “Checkered Past” ’40 Ford coupe from February 2014 – and bury those subtle styling touches deep into a 250mph land speed racer.
The front fenders were hammered under the roof of CAL Auto’s Bennington, NE shop out of aluminum. At 186 inches, the wheelbase was stretched just over six feet to give the ’34 Chevy its 300mph bones.
One of the first touches that caught our attention was the machined centers of the slip-streamed, flat-faced wheel covers by EVOD. Tinted acrylic was fastened over the milled Chevrolet bowtie, giving the practical aero aid depth and detail not usually found on a race car.
With a 66-percent stretch in wheelbase over the original coupe at 186 inches, a few acres of hand-formed aluminum had to be shaped to extend the nose of the 1934 Chevy. CAL Auto handled all of the sheet metal work as if someone took the nose of the early Chevy and stretched it like taffy, with the factory body lines and flow retained with the lengthened proportions. In fact, Andy and his team admitted that it’s the factory lines which ultimately set the wheelbase of the streamliner. “We took the lines of the cowl and pulled them out to their ultimate end points to place the nose where it felt natural,” he said. It’s where CAL Auto’s years of top-shelf custom work pays off, saving the coupe from the proportional woes that can affect a radical reinterpretation of a stock body.
The roof was chopped approximately six inches, set by the rule book’s maximum body and windshield height, before being stitched back together.

It allows for the upper half of the body to be quickly removed for service or clean-up, and the integrated diffuser produces a wealth of downforce with minimal drag. In combination with the rear spoiler, the coupe produces 1,000 pounds of downforce. The team worked with ThinkFast Engineering’s Neil Roberts to craft the aero package in CFD simulations, leading to such trick ideas as the windshield vents that pipe pressure built up inside the hood scoop to the rear windshield in an effort to reduce the lift (vacuum) that’s created on the back-side of the roofline.

The interior is predictably all-business, but CAL Auto’s attention to detail is shown with no loose ends to be seen. The complicated array of fuel, hydraulic, coolant, and air lines are neatly and sensibly routed through the tight confines of the chopped Chevy. While CAL Auto had built a handful of its own custom street rod chassis, stepping up to the fortification necessary in land speed racing meant over-building every detail. “When I was at Rad Rods by Troy, I did a lot of work on [George Poteet’s] Blowfish. So there’s a lot of inspiration that transferred from there, but this is the most purposefully-built chassis we’ve done to date,” Andy says. “It makes all the street chassis look simple!” Overkill was the name of the game to build up the chassis weight while also making it as stiff as a steel girder. This maintains rigidity over the bumpy salt crust while also providing the weight necessary to keep the coupe planted above 200 mph. Ultimately, this cocoon of tubular steel brings the total weight of the coupe up to approximately 5,700 pounds in race trim.
A big-block Chevy valve cover was modified to accept a pack of Classic Instruments gauges, while a digital tach tells driver Ron when it’s time to click the air shifter of his Liberty five-speed. CAL Auto’s Brad Ragel handled the mammoth task of wiring up the coupe’s, including the safety systems, engine controls, and data logging.
The coupe was originally built with the Atlas/Vortec 4200 inline-six in mind, but as the CAL Auto crew put it, Ron simply wanted to go faster once they began down the rabbit hole. Mast Motorsports served up 427 cubic inches of Precision-boosted goodness thanks to an engine program that leans on a Callies Magnum LS9 crank and billet I-beam rods, with Mast’s own heads (2.20/1.60” Titanium/Inconel valves) directing airflow from the Holley Hi-Ram. The single 108mm turbo is responsible for more than 1,200 hp at a lazy 8psi (while Ron and the CAL Auto team fine-tune and sort the new chassis), and is fed by a top-mounted air filter that sucks air through a hood scoop before being intercooled by an air-to-water intercooler. A 7.5-inch Tilton 6-disc clutch separates power from the air-shifted Jerico five-speed, which splits the gears ahead of the four-linked Winters quick-change rear axle. A unique four-link front axle was designed (due to the narrow nose) to ride along a vertical “track” of sorts, that keeps it centered in lieu of a panhard bar.
Last year, the Chevy streamliner made its debut with a stout 227.661mph blast on low-boost, even with the fractured, rough salt crust. The simulations had proven accurate, and the coupe was stable at speed. After some routine maintenance (including wiring, where salt water had leached into the insulator), the team was looking to break into the 250-300 mph range during Speed Week 2018, but the God of Speed threw the CAL Auto team some curveballs, which ate up their opportunities for runs. First, a miscalculation in the quick-change rear end meant that they were geared too short initially. After sorting through that debacle, a front-end “shimmy” began to develop at 150mph. “It was odd because we knew the car had been to 227 before,” said Andy.
Mounted ahead of the iron-block Mast Motorsports LS is a Precision 108mm turbo. “It’s like taking a five-stage nitrous system and hitting all the kits at once,” jokes Eric. The oval hole at the base of the windshield takes positive pressure from under the hood scoop (air that the engine isn’t consuming) and vents it through the aforementioned rear windshield vent.
These little issues stacked up throughout the week, with their first 207.538mph pass being their best. What they later found was that wet salt had built up on the back-side of a front wheel, essentially creating a one-pound wheel weight. “That’s one of those things about the great white dyno out there,” said Eric. “You can do all the preparation you want for 11 months of the year while putting the best car in the world together and get your ass handed to you with something as simple as that!” With high hopes for a return of 2018’s clean salt and excellent racing surface, CAL Auto will return for that 300 barrier.

Mopar 426 Hemi Returns As A 1,000-HP 'Hellephant' Supercharged V8
The legendary engine is showcased in a fantastic 1968 Dodge Charger restomod at SEMA.
When the teasers started dropping from Dodge and Mopar, we suspected something big was in the works. Dare we say, the return of the 426 Hemi engine was the elephant in the room (pun totally intended) because all the signs pointed in that direction. The real question was how much power it would make, and today that question is answered. Say hello to the Hellephant – a 1,000-horsepower (746-kilowatt) plug-and-play crate engine for the street. Yikes.

As the name suggests, this is basically a larger Hellcat mill with a cylinder bore of 4.0 inches and a stroke of 4.125 inches. The block is all aluminum and there’s an improved supercharger on top to force-feed the big engine copious amounts of air. The crate package includes all the important bits as well as a wiring harness and PCM tuned to give the engine its full power potential. There is a catch however – the crate engine is designed to work in applications for street and off-road use on pre-1976 vehicles only.

Of course, the build involved more than just dropping in a 1,000-hp engine; it’s a full-on restomod with a six-speed manual transmission, massive six-piston Brembo brakes behind Hellcat wheels measuring 20 inches in front and 21 inches in back, and an updated interior with all kinds of bits borrowed from a modern Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and the recently departed Viper.
It’s undergone significant plastic surgery as well. Fiberglass widebody fenders front and rear further add to the Charger’s menacing stance, but it also allowed the wheelbase to stretch a couple inches. You’ll notice there’s less overhang in front, with more modern-day inspiration found in the front splitter borrowed from the Demon, and a rear spoiler modeled from the current Charger R/T. The classic pop-up headlights are removed in favor of permanently installed eyes from the new Challenger, and discriminating Mopar enthusiasts will identify the side mirrors not from something new, but a classic 1971 Duster.

It’s an amazing vehicle and a great showcase for our ‘Hellephant’ engine.”   The “Hellephant” engine hits the magical 1,000 horsepower mark via bulked-up displacement, with 4.0 inches of stroke and bore specs at 4.125 inches. An improved supercharger with a high-efficiency rotor is mounted on the all-aluminum block, which provides huge weight savings to keep the “Hellephant” light. The all-aluminum block, used in Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak race vehicles that dominated the 2018 NHRA Factory Stock Showdown class, was configured for the street in close collaboration with Mopar and engineers from the motorsports world.
The engine and kit’s distinctive “Hellephant” logo provides a nod to the Mopar brand’s past and present. Front wheels are stock 20 x 11-inch Devil’s rims pulled from the Challenger SRT Hellcat, while the rears are upsized 21 x 12-inch custom-milled aluminum Devil’s wheels. The body drops 2.5 inches in the rear and 3.5 inches in the front to aggressively hug the pavement. Six-piston Brembos deliver a decisive stopping-power advantage over the 1968 brakes.   Custom fiberglass front and rear bumpers are flushed up and shortened cross-car to provide an integrated design. The custom fiberglass front chin splitter takes influence from the Demon, while the custom rear spoiler is inspired by the modern Charger R/T. The trunk key cylinder lock is shaved and the Satin Black fuel door embellished with a custom-milled aluminum “Hellephant” medallion, one of many unique design touches incorporated throughout the “Super Charger” Concept.
