Practicing a complex #violin bowing and #stringcrossing pattern in #violinconcerto in #aminor by J. B. Accolay (mm 133-152). Three videos: 1) First I practice the slur pattern using a customized version of #perpetualmotion by #shinichisuzuki from #suzukiviolinschool #book1 I modify this piece to create a 6/8 meter in which I can practice the bowing pattern in this passage, making sure to accent slightly and vibrate the main beats. I also change the key to A minor. Any etude will do, but I like to keep things simple so I can focus on the bowing right away without having to learn a new piece. Students who regularly review Suzuki repertoire will be able to learn this version in a few practice sessions, if not after a few minutes. ~swipe left~ 2) String crossings - there are many “drops” to the E string, usually for a repeated open E. It is essential that the entire arm drop to the E string even though this passage is fast. This ensures the best control and tone quality throughout. I announce the string crossings out loud as follows: “Drop” - arm drops to E string “Reach” - hand reaches to a lower string. Notice how it’s just my hand. My forearm doesn’t go up to the lower string. Announcing the string crossings out loud engages more of the brain and makes the practice more thoughtful and powerful. It also slows students down so they think about what they’re doing! ~swipe left~ 3) Performance version - The bowing and string crossing patterns are organized. Tone is pure on all strings. Tonalization Tuesday! Balloon Tonalization for posture and tone. Attaching or imagining a balloon attached to the violin or viola improves tone and posture in the following ways: 1) The instrument rises gently into the bow as the bow rests on the string. Tone is purest when both the instrument and the bow come together. The violin plays the bow just as much as the bow plays the violin! 2) Attention is directed upward keeping the head and back tall. Several times in this video you will see me look up at the balloon this creates a feeling of lightness in my upper body and head and and encourages tall, relaxed posture. Note: This is more than just about getting the violin up. It is possible to keep the violin high while the posture is poor. If your young violinist is still slouching, try the rosin balance Tonalization (posted last tuesday) or lying on the back (posted July 3rd) to help with playing position posture. In this practice, I’m focusing on the bowing distribution in measures 36 & 40. For a sense of motion on these up bows, I allocate increasingly more bow for each note. First note 1/6 of bow; second, 1/3; last, 1/2. ~swipe left~ 2) Practice the relevant measures using slurred #staccato or stopping for each note to ensure each note receives the allocated amount of bow. Also practice with the performance bowing slur and check to see you’re passing the chalk marks at the appropriate times. ~swipe left~ 3) Performance version. #melodious #doublestops #violinpractice I let my #violinstudents know composers include double stops to create the illusion of #singingharmony and not just to challenge the #violinist with something difficult! Here is a passage from #violinconcerto no 1 in #aminor by J.B. Accolay mm. 28-32 I practice and present such double stop passages to my #youngviolinists as follows: Four videos: 1) Practice each line separately. Use the performance fingering. If the student is struggling with intonation, practice using the simplest fingering possible, then proceed to the performance fingering. ~swipe left~ 2) Practice each line separately while fingering both lines. This is where I spend the majority of my practice time with double stops. This stage helps me find where the fingers may be getting tangled up or tripping over each other. In this passage I have particular difficulty placing the high A (second note) without the second finger rolling into the E string. It is only by practicing in this manner that I can correct this flaw. ~swipe left~ 3) Performance version, double stops only, excluding chords. I want to reinforce the expectation of horizontal, singing feeling where I am pulling the strings sideways so I omit the chord for now. ~swipe left~ 4) Full performance version with chord. When adding the #chord or quadruple stop, in this case, I use only an inch or two of bow on the lower notes. This enables me to change to the higher strings at the frog, where the string crossing is minimized and leaves plenty of bow to sing the upper #melody notes. Note: Depending on the level of experience/comfort with double stops, students can spend anywhere from several minutes to several weeks on each step.
