A few #violintechnique items can get in the way of making an exciting #crescendo at the end of the first big #violinsolo section of #violinconcerto in #aminor by J. B. Accolay. 3 videos: 1) In M 95, a long slur occurs after playing mostly separate or #détaché . I practice #slurred #staccato to make sure all 8 of these slurred notes sound just as clear as the preceding separate notes. ~swipe left~ 2) Next I practice a real slur, making sure to slow the bow speed and increase the bow arm weight on the first note of the slur. I also elongate the final note of this slur (3rd finger D) as this finger is used on the next note (3rd finger A) and the D can be dropped as the A is anticipated. I practice these passages as follows (4 videos): 1) Practice the last sixteenth note worth of the long note. Start practice on this note allocating about 1/3 of the bow for this note alone. Repeat this note and gradually fill out the measure that follows. Get a feel for how fast the initial up bow feels. 2) Start at the tip and pulse each sixteenth note counting each of the 8 triplet groups (“pineapples”). Count out loud, then silently. When you get to the last sixteenth note pulse of the long note, you should be able to play with about 1/4 of the bow as you did in step 1. 3) Performance version of mm. 17-18 4) Performance version of mm. 30-36. This passage contains two whole notes tied to the first sixteenth note of the next measure. Happy Birthday Dr Suzuki! Shinichi Suzuki was born on this day, Oct 17th in 1899 in Nagoya, Japan. Suzuki’s family owned a violin factory (still in operation today); however the young Suzuki had no interest in music until he heard a recording by Mischa Elman as a young man. After hearing Elman’s tone Suzuki decided to learn violin and eventually studied in Europe where he befriended the great Physicist Albert Einstein, who was also a violinist. After returning to Japan, Suzuki developed his method for violin teaching based on the assumption that every child can learn to play music expressively as they learn their native language by creating a nurturing and stimulating environment. Suzuki was able to leverage technology as Japan’s consumer electronics industry was developing, emphasized the role of listening to beautiful music from a young age! Suzuki’s method has been adapted for many instruments and voice. Here’s how I practice and present these passages to my students: 3 videos: 1) practice only the subdivisions without bowings, turning all notes into multiples of 16th notes as demonstrated. It is helpful to play a complete measure on a single note to establish the 16th not pulse ahead of the passage you’re practicing. 2) slurred staccato - use the performance bowing and rhythm but with slurred notes re-articulated as shown. This step ensures each note “speaks” and it also helps the player plan out the bow distribution. 3) performance version - rhythms are accurate and all slurred notes sound brilliantly! I’ve chosen to demonstrate measures 100-104 because it’s the longest such passage. The weight for tone comes from the arm, not the hand. Practice holding the bow gently by imagining it will float away like a ballon! I prefer balloon imagery to the classic “rocket ship” because it encourages a light, gently feeling in the hand. When playing use only the minimum necessary pressure needed to hold the bow. This will vary according to bow speed and volume. A basic guideline is to use as much pressure as necessary but as little as possible. Tonalization Tuesday! Balloon Tonalization for posture and tone. Attaching or imagining a balloon attached to the violin or viola improves tone and posture in the following ways: 1) The instrument rises gently into the bow as the bow rests on the string. Tone is purest when both the instrument and the bow come together. The violin plays the bow just as much as the bow plays the violin! 2) Attention is directed upward keeping the head and back tall. Several times in this video you will see me look up at the balloon this creates a feeling of lightness in my upper body and head and and encourages tall, relaxed posture. Note: This is more than just about getting the violin up. It is possible to keep the violin high while the posture is poor. If your young violinist is still slouching, try the rosin balance Tonalization (posted last tuesday) or lying on the back (posted July 3rd) to help with playing position posture. Bow speed game for children of all ages! Young string players walk/run between two set points. Practice partner counts backwards from randomly chosen numbers between 1 and 10. Count at the same tempo each time. Young musicians adjust speed depending on the number. The goal is to arrive at the destination at the end of the count by traveling at an even speed. Children will learn to choose the appropriate speed at the beginning of the count. Beautiful tone, rhythm and phrasing on bowed instruments are only possible with an understanding of bow speed control. This is a fun way to introduce or review this concert with young players.
