For this I play through all arpeggios in all keys. Each arpeggio is only performed in one direction so the next day I begin in the opposite direction Two videos: 1) Day one - arpeggio series starting at the bottom with C minor. Each arpeggio alternates. When #practicingviolin repeated #downbow #chords it’s helpful to think of the bow stroke and return quickly to the frog as a single motion, like throwing a ball on the ground and catching it when it rebounds. You need to catch the ball before throwing it again so the down-up motion can be thought of as a single cycle. Similarly, each chord will begin and end at the frog (down-up). Here’s a demonstration of the chords at the end of #violinconcerto in #aminor by J. B. Accolay. Three videos: 1) Throwing a ball against the ground and catching it to experience the motion/cycle of repeated down bow chords. ~swipe left~ 2) Repeat each chord a few times, making sure the bow returns or rebounds quickly back to the string (hair touches the string at the beginning and end of each chord). ~swipe left~ 3) Performance version. Chords are clear and easy. There is no crashing or swatting of the string since I’ve practiced the return as part of each chord. Practice soft dynamics by playing softer than a hum. Engage #auditorylearning by asking children to hum the soft parts. Then ask them to play the soft parts softer than a hum. Follow up by asking, “#howdidyoudothat ?” They will usually notice that they used less bow. Directly asking children to “use less bow” or “exaggerate the dynamics” often doesn’t work for #younglearners This humming activity gives them a way to discover the technique of using less bow on their own, through the senses rather than by following a direct instruction. I find this activity to be very effective in both #privatelesson and #suzukigroup class settings. For children struggling with humming at the right time, the teacher or parent may sing or play the loud parts and stop when it’s time for the child to hum. Children who are listening to the reference recording many times per day will have no trouble with this. This will work with any #musicalinstrument The answer to #howdidyoudoit ? Develop your “inner drone” with advanced scale drone practice! This is a powerful practice which can also be applied to etudes and repertoire. Step 1 - Make a recording of the scale or passage. I use the voice memo feature on my iPhone. I also match the first note to the tuner, but keep the tuner turned off for the recording. ~Swipe left~ Step 2 - The moment of truth! Listen to your recording while playing the drone. Remember you were not listening to the drone during the recording so you will be listening to the reliability of your “inner drone”. After doing this practice consistently I begin to notice my tendencies and idiosyncrasies. Note: For me this practice is more effective than listening to the drone while playing. The reason for this is that I adjust without learning what the out of tune tendencies are. When I started practicing this way I was surprised to learn how the first position part of the scales were more out of tune than the upper octave shifting part. Drop-out notes are notes which tend to sound shorter or quieter than the notes around them. Notes at risk of dropping out are notes before or after changes of bow, position or string. In these examples notes are slurred across the strings. The middle notes of the slurs occur both before and after changes of string and are therefore at high risk for dropping out. Examples: 1) Preludio From Partita no 3 by #jsbach Elongating the second note of the slurs clarifies this note and encourages a slow, heavy bow on the slurs. 2) Viola concerto by Bela Bartok The bow slurs across all 4 strings creating 2 middle or potential drop-out notes. Octave practice strategy. Here’s an effective way to practice octaves using the natural flexibility of the hand! Swipe left for each stage: 1) Play top notes only 2) Play top notes while fingering bottom notes 3) Top, bottom, together 4) Simultaneous octaves The first finger is more flexible and has greater ability to adjust than the pinky, so I practice the top notes first. Place the pinky comfortably ensuring the pinky side of the hand is always higher than the 1st finger side of the hand. (Look at the base knuckles - pinky base knuckle is highest). The 1st finger side is so low that the first finger touches the string on its side when placed (not the way you would place a first finger for a single note). Going from top to bottom exploits the first finger’s ability to reach back and adjust effortlessly and avoids the painful pinky stretch often associated with octaves, especially on viola. Picture with Hiroshi Iizuka and his viola which I purchased in 2018. The viola is in Iizuka’s famous “modified amore” pattern. Iizuka’s design is copied by luthiers around the world and is sometimes referred to as “Iizuka” pattern. I’m so grateful to play this beautiful instrument and own a piece of stringed instrument history! As a young man, Iizuka started making guitars in Japan. After hearing a violin concert by one of Shinichi Suzuki’s first students (it might have been Koji Toyota) he decided to devote his life to making bowed instruments. Iizuka studied violin making in Germany and eventually moved to the Philadelphia suburbs where he has been making violins, violas, cellos and basses for over 40 years. The weight for tone comes from the arm, not the hand. Practice holding the bow gently by imagining it will float away like a ballon! I prefer balloon imagery to the classic “rocket ship” because it encourages a light, gently feeling in the hand. When playing use only the minimum necessary pressure needed to hold the bow. This will vary according to bow speed and volume. A basic guideline is to use as much pressure as necessary but as little as possible.
