A list of the most useless random hcs about the twins (ft. Cyrus occasionally) that I've sent to my friend who was cursed with the burden of receiving my visions
- If Acronix, Krux, and Cyrus played monopoly together it would end in arguments between Krux and Cyrus. Acronix is the race car. This is non negotiable.
-Acronix would absolutely attempt to stand on the wall in a gravitron carnival ride
-if you gave Acronix a lazer pointer he would immediately shine it directly into his eyes
- Krux can cook really well, and if in an au where both of the twins get a redemption, I can see him trying to teach Acronix how to cook too
- Acronix and Cyrus would watch Barbieheimer
- in refrence to the Fnaf pizzeria simulator game, Acronix would think the ballpit mini game is the funniest thing ever
-Acronix has the vibes of a cat that you'd have to hold back from stealing your food
-Krux would be godly skilled at tetris
- Acronix would love abbreviating words while texting so he could text Faster but eventually his texts become borderline incomprehensible
-Acronix is a true listener of every type of music. You could put on any genre and he's groovin.
-Acronix would love beyblades and the Beat Saber game
- Acronix would like sour candies and hard candies (because it's a colorful tasty rock you're allowed to eat). Therefore his favorite candy would be a juicy drop pop.
- Krux knows Morse code
-It would be so realistic for Acronix to just get sick during his first week in the modern era due to like. Not being used to the new modern germs or whatever. And to whoever did that one fanfic I'm forgetting your name at the moment I do agree that Acronix would be so dramatic about being sick. Sickly victorian child vibes. He could get the slightest fever and suddenly he's bedridden asking to be brought outside into the sunlight one last time before the illness takes hold
-on a similar thread Acronix is the kind of person who, if you tell him he has internal bleeding, would be like oh okay that's fine, that's where the blood is supposed to be.
-Krux has probably accidentally drank oil a few times while working on his steam bots
- Acronix cannot resist the urge to bite into a glowstick. It's his curse.
- I have concluded that, in terms of beach activities, Acronix would be a Sports In The Sand kind of guy except on a day where the waves were especially strong, he would run in there immediately for the danger. He would probably also end up digging a giant hole just for the hell of it. Krux would be fishing// wants to be on a boat. And tbh Krux would love collecting sea shells as well but hate that sand gets everywhere.
-If you've made it this far here's a bonus doodle

Okay, so when I said I was afraid for the characters that we don't see in Morse, I didn't mean that Endeavour should do what it did instead.
Since it's still relatively new, I'm putting all my thoughts and yells of anguish below the cut, as well as tagging this for spoilers.
But also, do please come yell with me in my messages if you want, I am having a lot of feelings about this episode.
I was really afraid that they were going to kill off Thursday and/or Bright and they did not but THURSDAY MURDERING SOMEONE IS NOT BETTER.
Look it was an excellent episode and I'm going to have to rewatch it soon now that I know the horrid truth, with that in mind and see where things fall.
I really thought for a while there that Thursday wasn't going to make it through the episode, especially after he had his funny turn, and to be sure I was going to be very mad if he had a heart attack and died because we don't need those parallels with Morse.
But poor Win - she does not deserve to deal with this, and I don't think they're going to tell her and on the one hand I don't want them to tell her because she's been through more than enough, but I also hate everyone keeping important secrets from her. How is Fred going to explain why they have to move, and why Morse will never call? Morse is Win's adopted son as much as he is Fred's, and she misses him in a way that I don't think Morse fully understands.
I did genuinely think there that Morse was confessing his feelings for Joan and then the scene kept going and I was all "what the heck is going on with this show" and then it was all in his head but I'm not mad about that actually, because it was a little corny in it's way but also I loved having that opportunity to see Morse bare his feelings like that in a completely believable way - that man has the worst timing on the face of the planet, so I totally believed it. I don't remember exactly what he said but it was approximately "I haven't said your name because I'm afraid I'd never be able to stop saying it" is very swoony.
Also, before this season I did not know that Morse had a kicked puppy face and this season we've seen it at least twice, but honestly that is eclipsed by the way his voice breaks when he is explaining to Thursday how he knew he did the murder. And Morse is going to carry that (and knowing what happened to Peter, which he spares Thursday) for the rest of his life and that is a horrible, horrible, burden to carry. I'm still processing all the things that Morse chose to do to protect all the Thursdays here.
Kind of loved all the extra "Did we mention Dr. DeBryn is queer, because he's definitely queer" bits, also I am now desperate for fic of him and Miss Frazil being friends and hanging out.
Look this was a very queer episode overall, the "come back to America with me" had strong queer vibes even at the same time of the painful (and made worse by the fact that Jakes doesn't know Morse AT ALL) "What's keeping you here". Oh Jakes, it's so much worse because you don't know how much pain you are reaching there.
Still not sure how I feel about Joan and Strange - kudos to him for giving her an option of an out, I believed that he really meant it. She seemed very confident when she said that that was where she wanted to be, but she has not seemed entirely confident about the marriage this season up to that point. What she said to Sam earlier is right - Strange will take care of her, he will support, he will keep her safe, but Joan and Strange were still so awkward with each other in this episode. I don't think Joan's looking for a love match, but I would have liked for them to be friends. And while Strange clearly cares about her and wants to make her happy, I'm not sure they have a lot of mutual interests. I'm not convinced they have deep conversations on any topic. I don't think it will be a bad marriage but it could be a rather limited one. But maybe they'll become friends now that they're spending more time together.
How DARE they have Anton Lesser doing Prospero's speech over the In Paradisum of Faure's Requiem and then reveal that Bright is in fact sitting by his wife's grave, reciting, and then do all the slightly hazy early season shots - it was perfect and I have no notes. It was lovely in the context of the show, it was perfect as a way to acknowledge the show's place in the Morse universe, and it was a lovely way to show the changing of the guard, as it were, to the original show and how the characters were there.
(Side note if there is anyone else in this fandom who also loves Connie Willis' Blackout/All Clear - I had an immediate thought of "Anton Lesser would make a good Sir Godfrey" when I heard the speech.
It was also lovely to see Monica and Trewlove again, there in the images. I miss them, though honestly good for Monica getting herself out of that relationship with Morse, she can definitely do better. But I wish that that hadn't meant she drifted out of the show (even though I understand why).
The rest of the ending! Where they bring back the turning into John Thaw trick, that was so beautifully and fittingly done. What an episode.

Cipher Academy ch. 3 thoughts
[Out of Juice]
Is it rude of me to exclusively make observations about how Cipher Academy reminds me of Nisio Isin’s other works? I hope not, because it’s how I show my love
So Iroha denies Kogoe’s invitation to partner up, not just because the task is too great or because Iroha lacks the ambition to hunt for the Morg, but because he doesn’t feel comfortable being that close to a girl so fast. Gives me Hitoyoshi vibes, rejecting Medaka when they were three. Obviously Iroha doesn’t feel like he’s up to it, but the idea that he’s just embarrassed to work closely with a girl is surprisingly endearing
We’re then introduced to CG, who I assume is an AI assistant created by Kogoe, aptly named because he’s literally a computer-generated image. I love this guy’s design with his mustache literally being shaped into a C and a G. Again, I wonder if this was Nisio Isin’s idea or Iwasaki’s, but whatever the case, props to Iwasaki for the execution
Kogoe resolves to get Iroha to “fall for [her]” by giving him a confidence boost through puzzle solving, which rather than reminding me of Medaka Box reminds me of Katanagatari wherein Togame blatantly and shallowly attempts to make Shichika fall in love with her so that he’ll do what she commands. The difference here is that Shichika, being an isolated man-child, immediately decides that he does in fact love Togame because she told him to, while Iroha is definitely going to take some more convincing if it even happens at all
Iroha is confronted by Toshusai’s minions, who bafflingly challenge him to his choice of a puzzle or dance battle. This seems pretty random, and knowing Nisio Isin the way I do, that’s definitely how it’s supposed to feel, especially since while Iroha chooses the dance battle, Yukako goes with the puzzle anyway, making his choice moot. I’m expecting that the twist of the puzzle will be that it’s related to dancing in some way, much like the previous puzzle was solved through Morse Code after it had been a plot point
In a flashback, we learn that Yukako suspects Iroha’s glasses came from Kogoe, and Toshusai informs us that if so, the glasses are worth over 100 million yen just from the materials. This confirms that Toshusai is well aware of what the glasses are capable of and is already onto Iroha using them to solve the puzzle from chapter 1. Despite how dangerous they can be, Toshusai refuses to steal them from Iroha, as they are for all intents and purposes his legal property and doing so would land her and her minions in jail. I really appreciate that Toshusai seems to have a strong moral code, though she goes onto say that stealing them from Kogoe specifically would make matters different. I suppose preventing the actions of a warmonger outweigh the moral implications of thievery
We cut to Iroha dancing, which if nothing else, demonstrates that he has a pretty impressive skillset outside of puzzle solving. He ends with an idol-like pose and pops his glasses back on, making an honestly adorable expression as he asks how he did. It was super endearing even if it feels like it was kind of a pointless scene at the moment. I expect it will come up later, as it gives the impression that there’s a lot more beneath the surface for Iroha than someone whose just kinda good at puzzles
Yukako gets embarrassed that Iroha’s dancing was presumably more feminine than she could ever hope to be, so she pivots to the puzzle battle rather than the dance battle and informs Iroha that at Cipher Academy, deals made over codes are absolute. This is a pretty common thing in manga where competition is a major theme, as the sanctity of the sport is obviously one of the story’s top priorities, and we need to establish that the stakes are actually important to the people involved as quickly as possible
Puzzle number 5 consists of 51 stars, each with a combination of letters and numbers, though some only have letters. Two stars are filled in, labeled G and N3, while one is separate from the rest, labeled W3. I saw someone mention in the comments on MangaPlus that since there are 51 stars, it might represent the 50 states of America plus Washington, DC. With this hint, I checked the stars against an alphabetical list of the states, and sure enough, the numbers correspond to the number of states that start with each letter (ex: there’s A1, A2, A3 and A4, Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, and Arkansas, but no A5), and includes Washington, DC for five Ws rather than what would normally be four. Weirdly the L for Louisiana is lowercase, but I’m not sure if that’s relevant. Also, Washington, DC should strictly be a D, as its postal abbreviation is DC for District of Columbia, but that may be a hint that we’re not meant to be using the postal abbreviations at all
Anyway, this would make G Georgia and N3 New Hampshire, assuming it’s supposed to be completely alphabetical. I get the feeling it isn’t, though, since the lone W at the bottom, which would make sense to be Washington, DC because of its isolation, is W3, when alphabetically it would be W2 immediately following Washington state.
This also tells us that it isn’t chronological, as DC was founded first and would therefore be W1. It’s not by population or geographical size, as it would be W4 or W5 respectively. It isn’t by what order you would find them when looking on a map, as no matter which direction you start from, DC would never be the third one you find. I have to figure that the solution can’t be related to anything not readily apparent in the picture itself, so it must have something to do with the order that they’re laid out on the page itself. They don’t line up to a map of the US, though, evidenced by the fact that DC is nowhere near any of the M’s that could indicate Maryland
You may think it doesn’t really matter what makes DC W3, but as near as I can tell, it’s the single most important factor in the puzzle. G is obviously Georgia, it can only be Georgia, but there are eight N’s, so if alphabetization doesn’t explain why DC is W3, then it can’t possibly be meant to suggest that N3 is New Hampshire as we suggested. In fact, I think it’s safe to say that New Hampshire is the only answer it almost definitely CAN’T be, as that would allow the answer to be solvable with alphabetization when it’s not supposed to be
The main issue is that I don’t know what exactly we’re trying to solve here. Are we trying to find a name like in chapter 1? A location like in chapter 2? Are Georgia and unnamed state that starts with N the ultimate goal, or are they just hints in and of themselves? Once we’ve solved for N, do we need to determine a relationship between it and Georgia? Or am I completely off-base and we should be drawing lines between the stars to create a picture using G and N3 as hints for where to start? It was written while Yukako was watching Iroha dance, so my best guess is that, like I said earlier, it has something to do with dancing, but lord knows I can’t figure out what. I’ve been plugging away at this for over an hour now and I just can’t figure it out, and Iroha was only given 30 minutes total!
In exchange for the possibility of exile, Iroha demands that if he wins, Toshusai’s minions will stop chasing Kogoe, which he says with enough conviction that Kogoe swoons and CG chastises her for falling for Iroha. It’s a super cute and endearing moment for me, I like when characters insist on making someone fall for them for likely selfish reasons only to be the ones to fall in love first
Kogoe refers to the AR glasses as CG’s grandchild, implying that the glasses have an AI in them (which was also implied by them talking in chapter 1, though I just assumed that was Kogoe at the time), so I’m hoping that they’ll have a name and face like CG does (even if Iroha is the one who names them). I also only just noticed that the glasses have cameras on the end-pieces, explaining how they perceive visuals; I kind of just assumed that the lenses were able to capture light as it passed through to the eye, but I guess that wouldn’t really make sense scientifically since they’re clear, huh? I think Kogoe’s glasses might be the same way, which would also mean that she’s the only one who can see/hear CG since he’s literally an AR projection on the lenses
Finally, to make matters worse (and a lot funnier), the AR glasses run out of charge, making this the do-or-die challenge that Iroha needs to prove to himself and the audience that the glasses are not a crutch or a cheat device, but as Kogoe said, a tool merely to help Iroha visualize puzzles in a way that’s more conducive to his method of problem solving. I’m glad that this kind of trial by fire is coming up in only chapter 3, because it gave us just enough time to familiarize ourselves with how the glasses work without allowing anyone enough time to think that they were honestly doing all of the work
I think I forgot to mention it in my thoughts on chapter 1, but I really love how when solving a puzzle using the glasses, Iroha is shown moving his fingers around the empty air, which is actually what I do when trying to solve problems in my head! It was very relatable, and I hope it’s something that he’ll continue to do even when not being aided by the glasses
...Wait...long, orange hair...glasses...
...Ah hell, am I gonna end up cosplaying Iroha...

Incorrect quotes hours once again (may have accidentally left a few person [letters] in there from the templates I used on some of these)
~ Margret: Are you okay??
Andy, crying: It's okay, I was just cutting onions
Margret:
Margret, glaring at the onions: Square up

-

Thomas, after bringing Kamryn back in the game: Welcome back! You missed 3 murder attempts, a plague, and about 16 lawsuits. Kamryn: Wha- Arthur: I wish he were joking.
-
Claus: I have the sharpest memory here - name one time I forgot something! Andy: You left me, Melody, and Felix in a Walmart parking lot at 2am a day ago. Claus: I did that on purpose, try again.
-
Melody: For self defense reasons, I'm going to pretend to be a burglar and you guys have to act wisely. Felix, Andy, & Peter: Okay. Melody: If you don't want to die, give me all your money. (more under the cut)
Peter: Pardon the intrusion, but- Andy: On this moment or just my life in general?
-
Andy: I just fell down an entire flight of stairs and Claus told me "Oh be careful." As if I didn't already fall all the way down.
-
Felix: Hey Andy, do you have any hobbies? Andy: Swimming.. Felix: Really? That’s cool. I never expected you to- Andy: In a pool of self hatred and regret.
-
Peter: When someone points at your black clothes and asks whose funeral it is, having a look around the room and saying 'Haven’t decided yet' is typically a good response.
-
The Entity: Everything will be ok. You can not stop it. The Entity: Everything will be fine. You have no choice. Thomas: What the fuck kind of pep talk is that? The Entity: Ominous positivity.
-
Margret: I have found a foolproof method of determining if someone is truly evil Felix: Which is? Margret: If they dislike Andy, they’re evil. Felix, nodding his head in agreement: Yeah that makes sense. Then we kill them.
-
Andy: HELP! I TOLD MARGRET I’D COOK DINNER TONIGHT, BUT I CAN’T COOK! Felix, pouring milk directly into the cereal bag: And you thought I could help?
-
Claus: You’ll have a hard time believing this because it never happens, but I made a mistake.
-
Andy: As someone who has a long history of not understanding anything, I feel confident in my ability to continue not knowing what is going on.
-
Andy: I keep a picture of all of us in my wallet. Whenever I face difficulties, I take it out and stare at the picture. The Squad: Awwww- Andy: And I tell myself "If I can deal with these idiots, then I can deal with anything." The Squad: Oh.
-
Andy: I drink to forget but I always remember. Margret: You're drinking orange juice.
-
Melody: I mean, sure, I have my bad days, but then I remember what a cute smile I have.
-
Andy: Sometimes, I don’t realize an event was traumatic until I tell it as a funny story and notice everyone is staring at me weird.
-
Isabella: Ok, first of all, what the fuck?
-
Margret: You know, I'm starting to regret showing you how that blender works. Felix, drinking toast: Why do you say that?
-
Melody: Do you even know what an amulet is? Felix: Of course I do! I eat amulets sometimes. I like the ones with cheese and onions! Melody: Felix, those are omelettes. Felix: Oh. Then I’ve got nothing.
-
Thomas: So... what’s goin’ on? Isabella, having just watched Louis drown: You want the long version or the short version? Thomas, hesitantly: The short one, I guess? Isabella: Shit’s fucked. Thomas: Oh. Well, yeah, that’s definitely not an optimal situation.
-
*When Andy gets stuck in the barn for more than an hour*
Claus: It's locked. You got a lock pick? Melody: Yeah- Margret: *Kicks down the door*
-
Thomas: I’m a reverse necromancer. Isabella: Isn’t that just killing people? Thomas: Ah, technically.
-
Claus, wonderingly: How many Felix’s would it take to fix a lightbulb? Margret: The real question is, how many ladders would he need? Felix, somewhere else: I just got the feeling that I need to murder someone.
-
The Entity/Peter: Thomas is having a midlife crisis, and Andy is just having a crisis.
-
Andy: How stupid do you think I am?! Claus: You really want an honest answer to that?
-
Margret: Some people are like slinkies. Claus: What? Margret: Not really good for much but bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs. Claus: Claus: Please don't push Andy down the stairs. Margret, pushing Andy down the stairs: Too late.
-
Andy: I made this friendship bracelet for you. Margret: You know, I’m not really a jewelry person. Andy: You don’t have to wear… Margret: No, I’m gonna wear it forever. Back off.
-
Sam: Hey, aren’t you Thomas Eastwood? Thomas: You a cop? Sam: No. Thomas: Then yes, I am.
-
Kamryn: Are you drunk? Thomas: Only on the spirit of Christmas! Arthur: And the spirit of whisky.
-
Kamryn: *Speaking Spanish* Thomas: I know, I know. Arthur: You speak Spanish? Thomas: No. I just know the phrase, 'this is all your fault' in every language Kamryn speaks.
-
Claus: Ew. What kind of tea is this? Felix: I boiled gatorade.

5:46 Nathaniel? Guess that's Dr. Curtain's name now. Less ridiculous than Ledroptha, but you dont get the badass Let Drop the Curtain reference
6:53 okay so no one knew he had a brother? But he did???
7:21 his faaaace 🥺
7:29 AWWW HE COULDNT BRING HIMSELF TO SHARE 😭😭😭 okay I'm kinda on board with the change if they can make it work in the long-haul
7:42 hi Milligan, good timing 😂
7:56 "not the time.........I'll take a dozen" Number Two my LOVE
8:23 interesting. I dont think Mr. Benedict was adopted in the books? He certainly didn't let Violet's family, the Hopefields, because he knew their financial troubles would be even worse. So who?
8:54 ohhhh dear, stages of grief at work. Maybe don't do that
9:05 I talked about this in the MBS discord server, but I think the show is really nailing Mr. Benedict's feelings. He's always been an emotional person, but he has to be so careful. Bottling up your feelings only leads to bigger feelings later. It makes so much sense for Mr. Benedict to be a whirlpool of strong, repressed emotions.
9:11 MILLIGAN'S FACE JAHAHS
9:34 RHONDA'S FACE HAGSKDGDJ
9:40 Mr. Benedict, sweetheart 🥺❤
10:01 "brothers stick together" why does it sound like he's talking about Reynie here 😭😭😭😭
10:12 that is a good ass point, Mr. Benedict already lied to them once
10:21 it makes sense for Sticky to be the one questioning the most because of his anxiety, but damn
10:46 AWWWWWW
10:56 KATE MAKING A BED FORT KATE MAKING A BED FORT KATE MAKING A BED FORT
11:00 I dont like how aggressive Kate is but it makes sense considering she's been in the circus for years, taking care of herself for far longer than she hasn't. She's not good at depending on people, and she's not good with difficult people.
11:10 Yeahh, Constance gets it!
11:40 Yeahhh, Constance gets it
12:55 that teacher seemed pretty nice last episode, nice to see that they're not what they seem just the same as Dr. Curtain lol
13:28 CONSTANCE I LOVE YOU 😂😂
14:00 "check again" okay so Krista from the tests and Martina give off the same vibe.. perfect 😂
14:16 "yeah......hang in there :D"
15:05 all of the apologies to the general class.. he's such an anxious sweetheart. He's really reading as autistic to me.
My sister just called me 😑 it's like 8 am, I answered her like "did you ever consider that you might be waking me up?" She did not consider that 😂
15:22 Martina's face just growing more and more annoyed and disgruntled HAHA
15:29 that was CORRECT?? WHAAAA
15:51 throwback to when I compared Dr. Curtain to an mlm ceo.. definitely like a cult
16:44 ohhhh Martina
17:30 CONSTANCE HEARING VOICES HELLOOOOO
18:22 ayyyyyy helper man
18:40 he seems too cheery to be a helper .-. The helpers all being super sad made [redacted]'s story make a whole lot more sense
19:35 aaaand now we get to it. You know, it really does seem a lot more cultish on screen than in the book
19:53 WAIT CONSTANCE GOOD JOB PUTTING THE PIECES TOGETHER 😂😂😂😂
19:53 that cut to Milligan making that exact face was INCREDIBLE
20:05 was he tryna leave? Yeah, good fuckin luck bucko
20:10 "critical papers at home" my ass, they packed everything up
20:24 the stages of grief back at it. 🥺
20:38 their relationship >>>>
21:00 "located in the..?" *description of envelope* "located in the....?" *more description* "located in the????" 😂😂😂😂
21:34 ohhhhh Thursday must be the student ranking day
21:56 Martina seems like the kind to throw out "pick a god and pray" as a crit quote 😂
22:07 I don't see any of the Society'a names on the list. Maybe they havent been there long enough
22:17 OH SHIT JK THERE THEY ARE
22:25 ohh Kate and Constance
22:55 the combination of the ferry horn and the bell makes it weirdly grim
23:55 them bringing Kate up and reminding her that she's needed 😌✨
24:29 hi Milligan bb ilyyyy
24:35 real good lookout guys, y'all are so well hidden
24:52 AYY HE'S DOING IT KATE STYLE
26:31 "visionary" is a word for it
26:31 I really kinda love that Number Two and Rhonda are going to such depths to try and help Mr. Benedict figure this out for sure
26:56 Mr. Benedict fully walking away while they talk about his brothers accomplishments 😂 I'm laughing, but poor guy
27:08 his FACE 🥺
27:28 HERE'S THAT TANTRUM FROM THE TRAILER
27:28 take your guesses how many times will he fall asleep
27:50 "he just has to work through some things" you dont fuckin say
27:55 you mean to tell me he had a full blown meltdown and they didn't show him falling asleep once??
28:35 like father like daughter 😌✨
29:10 ayyyy secret desk compartment
29:19 honestly I'm surprised there were actually papers he needed and it wasnt an excuse to go confront Dr. Curtain
29:32 oh shit, how'd they manage to get that far inside? No one was there to guard it, but the maze itself is a security measure
29:42 KATE STYLE STRIKES AGAIN
29:47 ooooh I like Dr. Curtain's office
30:01 WAS THAT SQ AND DID HE JUST CALL DR. CURTAIN HIS DAD
30:41 birds have careers. Got it 😂
30:50 JOURNAAAL
31:02 the fox?? Reynard the fox???
31:27 ohhh here we go, Dr. Curtain sees himself in Reynie only to resent it later
31:37 Mr. Benedict called Reynie a leader once too.. the parallels have ✨begun✨
32:12 is this the "keep your enemies close" conversation??
32:15 I'm honestly surprised he called him Sticky and not George
32:42 IT IS SQ IT IS SQ IT IS SQ
32:59 sooo that starts by not letting his caution down with you
33:11 Dr. Curtain congratulating himself mid-conversation on saying something deep is so in character
33:20 "I was betrayed by someone very close to me" so that was Mr. Benedict. Who the fuck else would it be
33:23 WHAT DID I SAAAAY
33:31 oh noooo Reynie starts doubting Mr. Benedict here? Is that the move?
33:43 that transition was so pretty stoppp
33:53 again how hasn't he fallen asleep
34:55 ayyyy journal snooping
35:05 Constance, my love, you are cut throat
35:11 Milligan is in the DRYWALL? ohh buddy be careful
35:21 omfg are they talking about water polo 😂 I love that that's the sport of choice
35:51 ayyyy they put the Milligan dots together too. Shame the guy's not with them rn
36:36 so Mr. Benedict brings up cheating first? I really like how we get to see the adults riddling out what to send back, we didn't get that at all in the books
37:46 I LOVE THAT THEY KEPT "don't get caught"
38:51 Kate riddling out the island schematics engineer style is so like her
39:07 they're just walking out the door?? Huh???
39:29 babe... turn off your flashlight
39:33 AND THAT'S WHY
39:58 is that the precursor to chuckroot?
40:38 the papers were from his orphanage 🥺🥺🥺
41:14 why does that break my heart
41:19 Dr. Curtain and SQ doing shit together it just.. so heartwarming
42:00 HAHA
42:16 okay, so show!Curtain is a kissass 😂
42:35 wait wait wait so Dr. Curtain is actively trying to contain his brother? That would explain why the Recruiters were looking for him and weirdly not the kids
43:25 "power wants to be free" sounds more like a personal mantra than a conversation between engineers
43:41 YES A LETTER TO MISS PERUMAL
44:02 more voices. Poor Connie girl 🥺
44:36 he loves her so much 😭😭😭
44:45 SHE TRIED TO SEND HIM A CARE PACKAGE
45:13 WORRIED MOM TIMEEE

Come and Taste the Band: the underdog of DP albums
Tumblr media
I feel that in my essay I didn’t give enough justice to this album therefore here I will try to give a more in-depth review of this album and what I believe it represented for Deep Purple and just the structure of bands in general.
As some of you may or may not already know, Come and Taste the Band is the first and only album of the mark 4 lineup of Deep Purple which contains all former mark 3 members ,(Glenn Hughes, David Coverdale, Jon Lord, Ian Paice), but with a large exception, Ritchie Blackmore.  To understand this progression I think it’s important to look back at the previous album, Stormbringer, which had been an album largely influenced by Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale.  This is significantly apparent through the entire album as it takes a much larger funk vibe which Ritchie Blackmore had referred to in numerous interviews as “shoeshine music”.  Needless to say, he didn’t like the direction the band was going and he already had ideas to break off and form another band with then touring band Elf or more prominently vocalist Ronnie James Dio who he’d eventually form Rainbow with...well you know how that story goes.
Anyway, they “replaced” Ritchie Blackmore with American guitarist Tommy Bolin and I need to put that in parenthesis because you can’t replace Ritchie Blackmore.  Tommy Bolin is absolutely not a Ritchie Blackmore replacement, this is obvious from the first track, and he should never be seen as such, just as Steve Morse is in the current band.  Tommy brought an incredibly new energy to the band which was more geared toward the funk sound which Glenn Hughes had background in.  For some people, this can be seen as a turn-off but I truly believe that you’d being doing yourself a disservice if you turn your nose because of that fact because just the sheer amount of energy within this album is inspiring enough for any listener.  I understand not liking a certain genre, everyone is entitled to what they enjoy, however, if you turn off something because it doesn’t sound like “Deep Purple” then I just can’t understand that attitude.  I think the problem lies in defining what a band should sound like.  I understand that no matter what, preexisting notions will always form when a band reaches their peak however that doesn’t mean that someone should completely reject something when it isn’t the next “Smoke on the Water” or “Highway Star”.  Those songs are legendary and will always be remembered as the Deep Purple people have come to love but most musicians tend to change as time goes by and as fan, I believe we should be more receptive.
Anyway, going into the album, it’s spectacular.  Some stand out tracks have to be the titular “Gettin’ Tighter”, “I Need Love”, and the two-part “This Time Around” and “Owed to G”.  You can just feel the new energy in the band throughout the entire album and it really is a fresh and new experience that feels like the natural progression for what Stormbringer had laid down.
Tommy is absolutely phenomenal throughout the entire album and fits in perfectly with the rest of the band.  I believe this was due in part since the emerging funk side of the band wasn’t only seen through Glenn Hughes but Ian Paice as well as his drumming had soon been influenced by similar styles.  Listening to his solos in “Gettin’ Tighter” and “You Keep on Moving” but most of all the instrumental piece “Owed to ‘G’”, the liveliness of his guitar playing is apparent and almost soul-moving in a way.  Just from personal experience, there’s a certain aspect to his guitar playing that just seems to resonate deep within almost in a self-combustion sort of way but in the best way possible.
Glenn and David are incredibly strong as well, but there aren’t as many harmonies throughout the album having a more solo approach.  However, they both give heart-wrenching soulful performances, I mean just listen to Glenn in “This Time Around” which had also been produced by the one and only Jon Lord.
However, the final track of the album, “You Keep on Moving”, tributes to this harmonic style in a hauntingly beautiful way.  Just listening to the opening lines gives a renowned sense of emotional release and like the rest of this album and ironically as the title states, keeps you moving.
Now, even if after that this album may not be your suit of tea and that’s perfectly fine, everyone is suited to their own tastes.  However, like the passing years, Deep Purple has evolved along those years, each album almost taking an entirely unique shape from each other.  Although Come and Taste the Band is just that and although not seen as a Deep Purple album by many fans and even some band members, it’s still a beautiful piece of music created by 5 passionate and talented individuals that, if you have a spare 40 minutes, wouldn’t be a bad time.

Have you read the Inspector Morse novels? Are any of the characters queer-coded? Even in the TV shows? (We have a story by Colin Dexter in our syllabus this year and my friend and I think one of the characters gives off strong gay/bi vibes.)
*rubs hands*
weeeeell to answer your initial question no i havent read any of the novels nor have i watched the inspector morse show. i have only seen the endeavour series BUT that show has a small fandom in ao3 and here in tumblr and most of us headcanon morse as bi.
he is a merlin-like lead character. he is compationate.he has trouble respecting autority when said authority is doing paranoid shit or exploiting people and situations. he has that the-world-doesnt-get-me-vibe going on and he is incredibly lonely.
he is shown to have many relationships with women but unlike most heterosexual romances these relantionships are actually interesting.( think how merlin and freya’s relashionship is interesting. they’re not star crossed lovers or soulmates but the whole thing is well written and acted that you cant help but be invested in them). i think morse drinks a lot of that respect women juice, so thats probably why i like the way his relantionships are portrayed in the series.
there are also times that there seem to be some romance coding between him and some other male characters. In the great gatsby inspired episode for example they made morse take the role of the narrator who lives next to the rich party thrower named bixby(you can clearly see the connection here).if you’re familiar with the book or the film you’ll probably know the situation between these two.(noting explicitly canon but the subtext, intentional or not , is there).
finally there was an episode in season 4 in which some relegious fanatics harass a gay man and morse is pissed with them and actually helps the man.this seems like not much but its at least canon that he is actively not homophobic .also the episode takes place in 1967or 1967, only months after the gross indecency law(not sure if thats the official name but i am talking about the law based on which alan turing and oscar wilde were convicted) was abolished in britain so that made me appreciate him even more as a character .(plus you can take it as a sign that he is himself queer in some way.)
so final thoughts:there are no explicitly queer main characters in the show but you can definitely watch it and headcanoningly daydream that morse is bi or pan. thats exactly what i did and i enjoyed it. ofc ii would prefer it if it was canonicaly queer but you know, we work with what we have and ao3.

Endeavour Fandom Meme tagged by @wherehefoundtheporcupine, thanks!
Top 5 Episodes
Ride is my absolute #1 favourite. I’ve watched it so many times. The plot is so ridiculous. Great Gatsby&the Prestige crossover? I love it. Morse taking the time to heal after trauma? I needed so much more of that. THE HAIR? Forever in love. Home is also a favourite. Endeavour’s so YOUNG there. We get to see some of his family. We get some Thursday backstory. They take down the (former) mob-boss together. Morse looks so terribly fragile at the end. I just love it. Trove, immediately following Home, also great. Morse slowly piecing himself back together after being shot in the pevious season’s finale. Protective Dad!Thursday. The way Morse snarks at the snooty professor. The kindness he shows Frida Yelen’s dad. The tender moment with Monica. There’s a lot to love in this episode. Neverland almost didn’t make it in the top 5, because the puppet CREEPS me out, but I had to have it here, if only for Morse standing with Thursday, doing what’s right, despite the (DIRE) consequences. AND the POEM! I could listen to that on repeat except I cant handle the emotions. And lastly Deguello, andother episode where Morse takes on the corrupt upper layers, only this time with the Cowley team standing by him. Also by this episode I had gotten used to the Morsestache and could almost live with it.
Runner-up for Quartet for fantastic spy shenanigans, and also just mentioning Coda as a runner-up because I enjoy the angst of the bankrobbery but am not really here for manipulation-via-women that’s the plot of this episode.
Seasons in Order of Preference (or tops)
Gods must you do this to me? There’s highs and lows in all things. S3, S1, S2, S5, S4, S6. I haven’t brought myself to watch S7 yet, I worry it’ll make me dislike the show. It all seems so DIRE. I prefer the earlier seasons where there wasn’t AS much strife between Thursday and Morse, though the differences were always there I suppose. S3 is a definite fave, I love all 4 films that year. S4, the season where Joan left without saying anything, is only so low because it hurts my heart soo much. I cannot bear Win’s suffering. She breaks my heart in season 4, what a phenomenal performance with the little screentime she has. I love Win so much.
Favourite Scene(s)
Season 3, episode 1; Morse is back in Oxford, where he belongs, and he’s sitting on a bench next to Thursday. They discuss the case, Morse predicts the sandwich. And then, finally FINALLY. Morse talks about what prison was like. He tries to keep it light, but it’s... it’s still so fresh. But Thursday listens, and reassures him when he starts to doubt himself. And these actors, their faces, it’s just. I love it.
Tumblr media
Honorary mentions for the bed-shopping scene with Monica which is adorable and I love their love, the scene where Morse and Claudine discuss rain and sex because I like when Morse is happy, the exact way in which Thursday says "He's an idealist" in S6 finale Deguello as he's explaining why he can't get Morse to back off, and the scene after Fancy’s death, between Morse and Frazil because the way Morse says “he was 23″ and the look on Frazil’s face always brings tears to my eyes.
Favourite Musical Piece or Moment
I don’t really know? Despite the imporance of music in the show, I don’t really pay too much attention. I wish we had more of Morse’s singing. If I had to pick something I’d pick have Ein Deutches Requiem from Trove, but that’s mostly because I recognised it from when I sang it with my choir, and then I listened to (and hummed) the whole Requiem for about a month because of nostalgia and for the max Endeavour vibes it was giving me.
Also, I agree with wherehfoundtheporcupine; the theme tune. It’s so... wistful? I think? Just the association with the show I love, but also the soft beginning, swelling to that dramatic rolling melody and then the tender ending. Yeah.
Favourite Cinematography/Imagery (season, ep, whatever)
Probably this shot from Ride:
Tumblr media
(gif by @guardiansinferno)
I’m also a big fan of the way Morse never looks at bodies for long, and he’s always angled away from them in groupshots. He can’t escape it, but he’ll never be comfortable around death, and turn away as soon as he can.
Favourite Ensemble Character that isn’t Morse
Win. I just love her. I love how Caroline O’Neill plays her. I love how gentle and kind and supportive and welcoming and caring she is. But I also love how she stands up for herself, how strong she must be, as we see in glimpses of her life as a policeman’s wife. She’s amazing.
Runner up for Bright, who I’ll be honest I didn’t like at first, but now even on rewatches is always a joy to behold. Look at that man. He got where he is by doing things by the book, but he’s slowly learning that sometimes justice trumps order, and that it’s the people that are important, not the laws.
Favourite One-episode Character
Probably Bettina Pettybon, bless her poor heart. She has such a huge arc in the one episode she’s in. I hope she’s out there living her best life.
Favourite Morse Look (season, ep, whatever)
Smiling (gif by @snappyjenkins) The scarf (despite the negative connotations) also looks really good on him.
Tumblr media
Runner up for this look (gif by @mykingackles):
Tumblr media
Biggest Disappointment
The unresolved plot with Joan Thursday. Actually, the confusing character development of Joan Thursday. I wish we knew more about her mindset after Coda, and after coming back. I wish they hadn’t done the will-they-won’t-they-no-of-course-they-won’t-cause-canon thing for so long. Now they both just seem wishy-washy.
Provide some Spicy Takes (on canon, fandom, anything)
I keep forgetting that Morse has a sister, and I think the show should cater to me in that regard and actually mention her every once in a while. Let him talk about calling his sister, or end an episode with him dialing her number or something if you can’t afford to get the actress back.  Actually, extrapolating from that I’m done with Endeavour - Lone Wolf. Let him make (and keep!) some friends, even outside the precinct. He’s a prickly bugger at the best of times, but even prickly buggers find soft pincushions to stick to. I don’t know where this metaphor is going, let’s get back on track - Morse is kind in his own way. He cares, almost too much sometimes. Give us someone who cares back. I miss the Monica seasons.
Free Space! (Make up something - anything - you want to share or say)
I haven’t given enough love to Dorothea Frazil in all the previous questions. She’s such a great character, we really should’ve gotten more from her. I love the dynamic she has with the main duo, the way she and Morse seem to always be on the same wavelength, and how antagonistic Thursday is towards her. I wonder if it’s because he’s so old-fashioned and she’s not having that patriarchal bullshit, or if it’s just because she’s a journalist. I should go back and add Game to my favourite episodes, just because of her scenes in that, and the way Morse doesn’t even have to say what happened to her protogé. Also the way Trewlove puts that asshat who underestimates her chess knowledge in his place. God this show has so many amazing moments.
I have the feeling this game is spreading like wildfire through the fandom, I’ve seen it on my dash a lot, but I’m going to tag @endeavourous and @snappyjenkins cause I don’t think I’ve seen theirs yet?

January 2: The Final Frontier
Watched Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. I remember it being pretty awful but honestly... I liked it! I wouldn’t put it on the same level as I - IV as a whole, but I did like it.
First of all, this is such a good triumvirate movie. Like fully 50% of it is just Kirk, Spock, and Bones being awesome together and I’m fully committed to this concept. Especially since I read Kirk and Spock as space husbands and McCoy as their best friend who knows he’s hanging out with a couple and is totally fine with it.
They canonically go camping together on shore leave. Spock researches camping rituals for them and brings marsh melons with him. He flies around with his friends on rocket boots. They all know Morse code, but not very well. Some of the other films may have been better at showing off the rest of the crew (only Scotty really got significant time to shine here) and they might have had distinct roles for Bones to play in particular, and good Kirk & Bones and Spock & Bones moments, but no other film or episode really showed this family-friendship dynamic among the three of them so well, so consistently, and in such a front and center way, and I really, really appreciate that.
The general concept of Sybok and the quest for God... Idk I think it sounds nice enough on paper and I can’t entirely pinpoint where it doesn’t work for me in practice. I was definitely expecting a very different character before I watched the movie the first time, so I was disappointed but I basically knew why. This time... I still felt something was off, but I can’t describe what. Maybe I wanted a more charismatic Sybok? Maybe a more detailed relationship between him and Spock? I don’t know.
I’m not the biggest fan of the secret brother back story but... I also don’t think it bothers me as much as it bothers other people (including Gene Rodenberry lmao don’t tell his ghost what garbage has been put into his franchise since). I just have a different interpretation of the relationship and I don’t think mine is really contradicted by the film itself, except maybe by Spock’s line “we were raised as brothers.” I guess that’s supposed to imply they actually grew up in the same house and knew each other. But it doesn’t have to mean that. Imo “raised as brothers” could mean “were introduced to each other and knew they were brothers.”
Anyway my understanding of their relationship is that there is a BIG age gap, like 12-15 years. Half-siblings often have age gaps like that. Then Sybok was either raised by his mother or at, like, Vulcan boarding school. Also if he were 15 years older than Spock, for example, he’d be an adult by the time Spock formed any real memories. And if he was exiled at a fairly young age, he might not have seen Spock at all since Spock was a very small child. This makes sense to me implicitly because Spock gives off STRONG only child vibes. Also, Kirk is understandably incensed at never having heard about this “brother” but, as someone with a half-sibling I wasn’t raised with and rarely talk about, I can totally understand how that would happen. I often confuse people by mentioning my sister after I mention being an only child. And third, it would explain their vibes around each other--they are technically brothers, but they don’t seem especially close; Sybok still treats Spock as if he hadn’t matured since he was very young, and even though he probably has access to all of Spock’s memories (as much as he has everyone else’s), he picks the absolute earliest one he could; and when they first meet he says something like “you finally caught up to me,” which to me implies a large age gap.
(Also btw this makes more sense with Sarek’s apparent age b/c if Sybok was a Pon Farr baby, he’s probably only 18-20 years younger than Sarek, whereas Spock would be, say, 33-35 years younger, which seems appropriate.)
Parts of this movie just... didn’t give off strong Star Trek vibes to me. I think the sections on the desert planet really didn’t feel right. They felt more Star Wars than anything. This might be because I see a desert and I think Tatooine, I see a bar in the desert and I think cantina scene--but I also suspect it’s more than that. This concept of a bunch of aliens hanging out on a planet together... that’s never been Star Trek. ST has always been so focused on the ship, even through the first four films. Having these none-ship POV scenes just felt weird.
In a way, the movies have been moving ever farther from the mood of TOS, and I can’t quite put my finger on how just at this middle-of-the-night moment. I still like them, but there’s something more.. general sci fi about them. Even the ship design and the uniforms just feel less unique. It’s the og cast and characters keeping it together--which is probably why I’ve never cared to watch any other series and fail to see any other crew as “real Star Trek.”
Scotty/Uhura was super fucking cute. They are canon and, I’m just going to say it, it would have been interesting to see AOS go that route, too.
This was also a great film for Captain Kirk characterization because honestly, say what you want about Shatner, but he KNOWS this character (setting aside his erroneous opinions about the bisexuality he himself acted into the guy in the first place lol). I love this mature, confident, leader Captain. (I’d be interested to see a non-T/arantino AOS film that shows off this characterization of Kirk. CPine has the range.)
Some great K/S moments: “Would you like to join me in the shower, Spock?” “Worse [than betraying the ship/crew], I betrayed you.” Spock giving Kirk his hand in the brig. And of course, “Not in front of the Klingons, Captain.”
Also a fan of the moment at the end when Chekov and Sulu are definitely checking out the lady Klingon, and the implication (I think??) that the Federation rep who looked like David Thewlis and the Romulan who didn’t look like any Romulan I’ve ever seen hooked up off screen.
It’s not a masterpiece but this movie doesn’t deserve the hate it gets and it didn’t deserve to bomb commercially either. Perhaps people were just more interested in TNG. But I would absolutely rather watch ST V than any episode of TNG lol.

My top 10 stranger things characters ranked!
(El isn’t included. Not because I don’t like her but tbh we ALL love her for the same reasons. I wanted to keep this list interesting)
It’s about to get controversial up in here!
10. Mike Wheeler
Tumblr media
I know, I know, but listen: Mike was great in season 1, but he really devolved in my opinion for season 2. He was a complete ass to Max and I know what you’re going to say: “he just didn’t want her to be replacing El!” Well he didn’t seem to mind when El “replaced” Will in season 1! He gave off some serious sexist vibes and I didn’t appreciate it. He IS extremely smart, so I’ll give him that🤷‍♀️
9. Jonathan Byers
Tumblr media
I actually love Jonathan. He’s a good older brother, he really treats Will well. He’s made mistakes (taking hella gross pictures of Nancy) but he did apologize and he’s grown since then. The only reason he’s ranked so low is because others just bring a little more to the table in my opinion.
8. Dustin Henderson
Tumblr media
Absolutely 0 character flaws in season 1 tbh (or at least none I can remember). He was the realest friend and he really held the group together. A+ comedy as well. In season 2, he had a few cringey moments and a rude one (telling Max to go home the way that he did) but overall, I still like him.
7. Steve Harrington
Tumblr media
Complete douchebag in season 1 but King of Character Developement. I wish he hadn’t been so hard on Nancy though. She WAS drunk and she was clearly struggling a little extra regarding Barb. But he did make one hell of a babysitter so...
6. Jim Hopper
Tumblr media
I’m gonna be real, he’s not a great guy. Yes, he took care of El, but he wasn’t good at it. She was still isolated for an entire year and her only way to connect to other people was that TV. However I completely relate to his situation and that’s why I love him. He had a child that died, so of course he’s going to be bitter towards children that lived longer. I had a cousin that was supposed to be born in the same month as me, but she came super early and passed away. My uncle could hardly look at me growing up until a few years ago he got another chance and now has a healthy baby.
5. Joyce Byers
Tumblr media
A mother. She was in an abusive relationship where she was manipulated into believing she couldn’t survive on her own, but she pulled herself together and raised two boys. She figured out where her son was even though it was 100% crazy. She looked pure evil (Brenner) in the eye and told him to go to hell, knowing he could fake her death and she’d never get Will. She respects her kids and they love her for it. She is an icon
4. Will Byers
Tumblr media
Everyone knows Will is pure. When he lost D&D, he could’ve gotten away with it, but he decided to lose honorably. He’s a good artist and a lot of bad things happened that he didn’t deserve. Even the “small” stuff, like bullying. But he’s also strong. That demogorgon took down people that were suited up to kill it, but Will outsmarted in for a week. He hid, without food or water, managed to contact his mother, and kept up his strength in a different dimension from a monster. In season 2, he outsmarted a mind controlling monster because it didn’t know Morse code. He’s flipping awesome!
3. Nancy Wheeler
Tumblr media
She went from a stereotypical “goodie” to a badass. When her friend went missing, she got down to business and did what had to be done. She, on literally no sleep, lured a monster into a trap and used a gun on it! In season 2, she took down a formerly-cia-funded government branch. And have you seen her catch that big ass gun hopper tossed her? She also figured out how to stop the mind flayer from killing Joyce under extreme pressure.
2. Lucas Sinclair
Tumblr media
His maturity is really impressive. A lot of people don’t like him for being untrustworthy of El is season 1, but he was completely right to be. The knee that she 1. Had super powers and 2. Had something to do with Will’s disappearance. That’s sketchy. But he was wrong, so he owned up to it and apologized. He also tried to take down an inter dimensional monster with a wrist-rocket, so A+ for effort.
1. Max Mayfield
Tumblr media
I’m gonna be real, I was originally drawn to her character because of all the misguided hate she was receiving (as well as Sadie) before season 2 even dropped. I thought she deserved some love, so I gave it to her. When season 2 did air, I still liked her. She was in an abusive home and came off (at most) angsty. She worked hard to end that cycle of abuse and it shows. She apologized to Lucas for being a jerk even though he totally liked her and the apology wasn’t really necessary. She was rejected by Mike but she helped him (in a life-risking way) anyways. She showed empathy when she found out who El was. She was nice to her bully because she recognized what he needed and she delivered. She’s relatable because her situation is real and, unfortunately, common, but she’s a 13 year old girl and she’s stronger than it. I have mad respect and admiration for her. In conclusion, Max is my favorite.

REE-YEES
Ree-Yees comes from Kansas: a sentient rhythmic vibe reborn into human body hosts every generation. This generation Ree-Yees has selected Eric Ratzel and James Wetzel as its host. Manifested through their bodies, Ree-Yees operates on the bleeding edge of Electronic Dance Music, Jazz, and Brazilian/West-African tonal and rhythmic qualities. Here improvisation renews its connection to musicianship and dance usurps the recording as music’s crowning achievement. With fuzz, ruckus, groove, and joy, Ree-Yees seeks in every generation to dissolve the disparate multitude of named egos into the univocal being of the vibrating plane and its serene anonymity.

Fluid Artist Focus on Haarvöl 1 Haarvöl: Indite (2015) Reviewed format: review copy of CD Album on Moving Furniture Records in digital format as kindly provided by Haarvöl Welcome to the first review in a series of four reviews of releases by the Portuguese experimental music group Haarvöl, whose awesome recent album with Xoán-Xil López on Crónica I reviewed not too long ago. Since this review series is similar in style to Fluid Label Focus I decided to name this Fluid Artist Focus for this occasion. I received the four Haarvöl albums I’m going to review as rips from the original CDs as lossless digital files from Haarvöl themselves through email. I received a great response from them on my previous review so they kindly suggested to me to review several more release by them as well, to which I obviously said yes. So here we are with the first release I’m reviewing of the set of four albums. My approach is to review the albums chronologically from old to new, so today we’re starting with Haarvöl’s 2015 album on Orphax’ label Moving Furniture Records, Indite. Conceptually Haarvöl state in the accompanying release description PDF that a strong focus of Indite is the actual process of composing music. Indeed in all of the 6 pieces on this album you can definitely feel a sense of being able to hear the compositions being composed, layered and structured, while they are playing, with the 6 pieces following quicker progressions than the Unwritten Rules of a Ceaseless Journey album released this year. The various elements of the pieces on Indite are brought more to the foreground, have a rougher at times distorted texture to them and the music sounds more like an exploration in progress with various elements in the music often occurring just once, spontaneous and on the fly, creating compositional paths within the pieces which you can follow, with the music having a less diffuse interlocking of layers. Now, before we move into the review of the music, I’ll mention the contents of my review copy of Indite. It contains the 6 album tracks in 16-bit/44.1kHz CD quality audio, a log file from the CD ripping process and the description PDF file. Indite begins with the track Stazione metafisica (A Antonioni), a piece which introduces the sound of this album quite well. With much more prominent melodic elements in the form of strong drones, bass and synthesised strings the piece lays Haarvöl’s droning side more bare. I also noticed right from the start that the music is much louder on this album, with less extreme dynamics and more of consistent flow of sound than Haarvöl’s newer music which features bigger differences between more subdued and louder sections of the music so it does feel quite in your face at times. The music’s quality again however and right from the start with this first piece we have an exciting and very varied musical journey from A to B, which you can also guess from the title’s meaning, a metaphysical station. Flowing from station to station as it were, the piece starts with a very strong intense bass which moves towards a calmly fluctuating synth drone melody, this synth drone melody then moves towards the middle of the piece. Clattering metallic objects can be heard throughout the stereo field, as well as fuzzy noise and strange stuttering delayed metallic effects. These metallic industrial elements are definitely not unfamiliar to us, especially if you’ve also listened to Unwritten Rules of a Ceaseless Journey. But on this track and on the album in general, their usage is much less about blending in with the droning tones and melodic elements and more about being a clear integrated both resonant and percussive layer of textures but that is still just like most elements on Indite, a clearly distinguishable part of the puzzle that forms the sonic layering of all the music. What Stazione metafisica (A Antonioni) brings as a first piece is a composition in which calm ambiences morph into darker more mysterious cinematic gloomy darkness, with the middle of the track taking an especially foreboding eerie ambience but afterwards the music moves towards a brighter albeit more “chaotic” kind of part in which especially creaking sounds and mechanical sounds and P.A from a train are audible, backing cinematic string drones and swirling droning sweeps. This latter half seems like a hybrid of sound describing the noisy and at times stressful experience of travelling by train, in a full train for example and blends this with a sonification of subconscious thoughts, like a subtle sleep creeping in as you wait and wait in that train until you finally reach your station. This first piece also showcases the way that this album features Haarvöl’s music in slightly more compact form, spread over the 6 pieces as they’re all shorter than the 15-minute pieces from the new album and form more of a continuous collection of shorter works that all have their own short story or sonic events composed on the fly as the music moves on and while these pieces are a bit harsher and industrial in nature, the music feels more accessible for listeners unfamiliar with experimental / avant garde music too as the melodic elements and separation of elements makes the pieces quite easy to get into straight away. Next track Water Ordeal matches its track title quite well, a more traditional styled Drone piece, this piece features water field recordings indeed blended with calm meditative drones but also some lovely distorted tones in the mix as well. Quirky synth effects, metallic shifting sounds and glimmering sounds and sharp sawtooth synth tones from some sweet details in this piece that also adds an oriental instrument to the mix creating a kind of “Eastern Industrial Drone Ambient” sound. It’s a sweet relaxing piece of music that feels a bit like the soundtrack to a mysterious boat trip on a river, a very nice track. The Massive Downward of Greyness moves into some proper Industrial territory with pretty much the whole track being filled with all kinds of metallic, warbling, distorted tones and screeching. The piece retains a drone based style however, as low filtered eerie blobs of sound fill the background and a strange didgeridoo like warbling sound starts and ends the piece in a very intriguing and sonically pleasing manner. This piece is definitely the most intense piece on the album, feeling like walking in a gloomy noisy environment near both a factory and a landfill, as the bells combined with the metallic machinery sounds create that suggestion of wind brushing against bits of junk and loud heavy industrial machinery constantly in use. At times the sounds are all enveloping, almost ear piercing but the variation in textures as well as subtle single tones on a string instrument (that sound pretty funny in an absurd way when you notice them) brings a nice dynamic to the piece which keeps it from becoming predictable and always keeps surprising within this noisy sonic environment. Also, keep an ear out for some voice sounds in here, won’t spoil too much though. Quaestio Tormentorum is a favourite track of mine, much less dense in terms of textures with the sonic space, but a great piece in its slow build towards a very explosive climax. Featuring brooding eerie resonant drones, resonant reverberated plucked string tones, mysterious glimmering and ghostly electronics and this amazing sounding clarinet part which is gated in chopped bits and panned in a very impressive manner, creating intriguing fluctuating sonic shapes that give the music a sweet electro-acoustic touch that also fits the Dark Ambient vibe very well and adds a lovely new element to this album as it progresses, making every track lean into yet another new direction of ambience and types of sounds used. The aforementioned climax occurs in the second half of the track and features a very intense distorted Noise drone that is looped, adding a curious element of sound manipulation to the climax that is quite unexpected as very recognisable looping doesn’t often occur, at least not in Haarvöl’s music that I listened to so far. This climax then fades out into the eerie ending of the piece which features resonant reverberated percussion, buzzing synth drone and ghostly synth effects. A very nice eerie dark piece of music in which the clarinet chopping adds a very unique sonic element to the music and the climax is very intense and effective. Then on The Inescapable Labyrinth bring us a brighter drone piece again featuring some lovely water sounds, this time more of a crackling kind that are mixed in with morse code, high frequency shimmers and organ like wavy drones. This piece is a sweet mixture of the organic sonic elements and electronic sounds, feeling like a smoothly flowing stream of warm liquid river textures in which the high frequency melodic and rhythmic details add additional shimmering colours to the blend of crackly resonant drone goodness. Metallic textures, subtle saturation and short percussive hits continue the more Industrial oriented direction of this album in general which is also enhanced by additional noisy fuzzy AM radio static like drones that also feature in this piece. A great mixture of ambiences and Industrial elements. On final track Broca (Effacer la mémorie) builds a layered drone from scraping resonant overtones, brushes like percussive elements, cello droning and stuttering metallic elements. It’s a great combination of acoustic and electronic elements that also features a bit of noise in the second half of the piece and the simple yet captivating melodic progression also adds a nice charming element of compositional depth to the piece. Sounds like pretty classic style Industrial Drone in its execution with again some organ like tones as well as glockenspiel popping up as well. A great richly textured final piece of the album with some lovely scraping drone work and industrial elements in the music again, very intense and a great progression within the composition itself, very nice. All in all, Indite by Haarvöl offers up an excellent set of 6 richly textured and composed pieces of experimental drone soundscapes that have a more melodic and rhythmic focused approach to both the compositions themselves as well as the sound sculpting. The well balanced pacing of the compositions, Industrial influences and inventive captivating details within the music make this an album that is both ambient and cinematic but also Industrial and harsh at times, forming an interesting cross between the meditative and introspective qualities of Drone Ambient music and the mechanic, resonant sonic qualities of machinery and Noise infused Industrial elements that form some great climaxes at times too. This another strongly recommended album by Haarvöl that’ll definitely be a great listen for fans of Drone, Industrial and Dark Ambient music and Electro-Acoustic soundscapes and proves the versatility of the group Haarvöl, showing their tonal qualities this time as well as letting the listener participate in their observations while creating their compositions through the clear structures of the 6 pieces on Indite. A great recommended album to check out now for sure.
