qrow strikes me as someone who used to get into a lot of fights as a kid, be it others starting them or qrow himself for whatever reason he could come up with (or just to feel something bc no one wanted him, but some would still fight him and to him that was better than nothing). he wouldn't know how to throw a punch properly, but he'd fight dirty, scratching, biting, spitting; whatever came to his mind, he'd do it.
and he'd still be like that come beacon—it wouldn't have been an odd sight to find him with a bloody nose—, but he'd calm down noticeably once it became apparent that he was accepted, that he'd found his place in the world.
even so, he knows how to be just the right amount of annoying to goad someone into fighting him.

if it were up to me, both yang's and ruby's surnames in any official documentation would be rose-xiao long, but they shorten it differently for personal reasons (ruby to 'rose' bc the summer pedestal and everything that comes with it, yang to 'xiao long' esp after finding about raven bc complicated feelings about everything but esp the whole "summer / raven left" thing and, well. tai's the one who stayed.)

coming to beacon, i don't think qrow would try to change himself in any way to fit in. he'd just be himself, and if that happens to be a little weird and being a jerk, so be it; he doesn't feel like he needs to hide that he was raised by bandits bc he's there to become a huntsman for real, so if anyone finds out it's like. okay? what else you've got?
but raven with her masks and omen's multiple dust blades that she has plenty to spare in "weapons are extensions of ourselves" the show? oh, absolutely. she's come prepared, she'll fit right in and no one will ever guess she grew up in the middle of nowhere, raised by bandits—
except that it's. a little bit off. not super noticeably, but it's all very... practiced. the kind if you googled how to be polite and followed instructions; all small, polite smiles, speaking evenly, etc.
and that's what she does, every single time she can't avoid social interaction and needs to actually be part of the team and what not, and it lasts for like, a month, until qrow has had enough and tells her, in front of every one else, to stop doing that, it's creepy (and you sound stupid)—which also, incidentally, means that to everyone else, raven is even weirder than before.

harbinger has gears. def something qrow picked up from ozpin, so if he already had harbinger before attending beacon, it would have had to look different.
thinking about younger qrow, hearing stories about the grimm reaper and wanting a weapon similar to hers. maybe he had a sword similar to omen at first ( hence the hidden red blade that is only seen in harbinger's scythe form, cut into parts to account for the curved blade ), but after scavenging enough parts, he starts to build up from it. with lots of trial and error, he finally succeeds in creating something... workable, though the mechanism he has in place still jams more often than not.
just... the thought of harbinger that looks more like scrap put together that still works but isn't quite what he expected it to be, just because qrow wanted a scythe and that's not something you just find laying around, so he did himself with what little he had.
and then he gets to beacon and can upgrade harbinger to his heart content, taking inspiration from around him; harbinger finally becoming how he always imagined it to be.

so like.... did summer actually finish the story or was there still chapters left?
cos if she didn't i'm gonna headcanon that afterwards, ruby developed this deeply rooted need to stay awake long enough for any bedtime story to be finished—e.g. how she's still awake when tai finishes the story about the warrior while yang is fast asleep—bc as a child she drew a correlation between summer not finishing the story and summer disappearing and went never again.

headcanon time: orphaned when she was about 12yo, summer was picked up by an member of the inner circle and brought to beacon for her own safety. there, she quickly became known as 'the ghost of beacon', a nickname given to her by students who, for the most of part, only ever saw as a fleeting sight of her white cloak as a proof of her existence.
instead of attending a combat school, summer stayed in the safety of beacon and trained there, either having made sundered rose in preparation of training before her family was killed, or making it at beacon. around this time is also when she met and befriended ozpin, who himself had just recently became the next host of ozma and went through his own studies to obtain a huntsman license to pave his way to become the headmaster of beacon one day. due to this little coincidence, summer knew / suspected more before ozpin eventually told the truth to team strq.
(in a way, her old nickname is more apt than ever with summer, believed to be dead, 'haunting' beacon once more.)

mistral is known as the cultural center of remnant with its arts and stuff (very eloquent, i am) so i'm hc'ing that haven's uniforms are like That to give their students a blank canvas that they can stylize however they want; be it with pins, patches, embroidery, and so on. anything goes.

team rwby cooking headcanons bc why not:
ruby & yang: putting these two together bc of their shared childhood; tai would prepare a ton of leftovers and other easy-and-quick-to-make foods for yang and ruby to make and eat in case he had to stay late at work / go deal with a sudden grimm problem in the neighborhood, so the two never really learned to cook, and at this point they're so used to food being almost-instant to make (or made by someone else) that just the idea of making something and it taking more than 5-10 minutes is tantalizing. so, pre-made / just warm it in a microwave / on a stove food it usually is. (ruby would give it a shot, and then get distracted half-way through by something else, and that would be that.) (yang simply refuses to let go of her instant noodles. she's got places to be and no time to waste.)
weiss: okay, i did consider leaving this as just "weiss:" but... i really like the idea of younger weiss accompanying klein in the kitchen while he's making her her favorite (simple to make) (and also comfort) food, and helping a little. so, theoretically she knows how to make her favorite food, but she's never done it herself alone, so the first (and second, and probably third too) time she'd try, she would fail miserably and grow incredibly frustrated. she'd get it right eventually, but still, it never quite tastes the same as when klein made it.
blake: by default the best cook in her team, but considering the competition, that isn't saying much lol. either way, she knows how to cook, but doesn't do it much. cooking for blake is like, a community / family thing; something you share with others from start to finish, a social event almost. it's time to spent, well, time with others. it's just not something you do alone. her cooking is generally passable, like you won't complain eating it but you also won't write home about it; if the dish involves fish however, now that's something to write home about it, thanks to the many family recipes from menagerie that have been passed down from generation to generation (or one or two).

qrow had venom in his system for like, what? a whole day, at least? and now i'm thinking of a 'what if', that after his recovery he's still affected by the experience; stuff like fatigue, growing tired faster, more easily, which would affect him either slightly or severely, depending on how long a fight goes on.
qrow who dreamed of becoming a huntsman since he was a young child, who now has to deal with the fact that his career might come to a premature end. qrow who still keeps pushing, if for nothing else then his nieces and all these other kids who rely on him to be there, keeping his condition a secret to the best of his abilities, as long as he can.
qrow who's used to being considered a burden due to his semblance, now thinking he might be in more ways than one, and having to go through those old emotions all over again.
and so on and so on.

yang absolutely strikes me as the type of student who separates her free-time and school / studying. final class of the day is over? no more school thoughts, it's her own, school-free time now. for that reason alone, when given an opportunity, she will attempt to do as much of her homework during class as possible so she has less to do later; if that's not doable, she will either attempt to do it right before a class starts (usually ends poorly) or she will just complain her way through it. going over her notes? like she said when blake was going over her notes from previous semester: Iaaame.
she has no issues skipping class. she's not making a habit out of it, but if she has no interest in the current subject matter or she's just not feeling it, well. what's the point in going if she's just going to fall asleep during the class, anyway?
despite all of this, she still does well in school. i mean, it does depend on how interesting she finds the class, but if she can be bothered to attend, safe to say she's still getting decent-to-good grades; she just pays attention during class and takes notes, which helps her memorize stuff (even tho she won't be going over them ever again except for a quick run through right before an exam), and that's enough for her.

my 'headcanon' for all of my canon-adjacent AUs is that summer left on her mission when ruby was five, making her admission to beacon happen around the time of the tenth anniversary of summer's disappearance.

since grimm are apparently Cold As Fuck, i'm giving them the groke treatment and no one can stop me /j
wherever a grimm walks, the ground freezes. any plant life beneath their steps is especially affected, but if the grimm are just passing by, it eventually bounces back. if the grimm, however, have made an area their home, the area will eventually become devoid of life (with help from a healthy dose of grimm goop, too), making finding their nests—and just in general, tracking them—that much easier.
(exceptions may exist, e.g. is a grimm breathing fire? probably not as cold as its brethren, then)

since i have a headcanon / au thing for kindred link, here's one for misfortune too for some.... extra.... angst....
SO. while misfortune acts on its own for most of the time, those are fairly benign instances; it's when qrow touches something—or someone—that any misfortune gets stronger, and the longer the contact is, so is the effect worse.
"what about harbinger?" harbinger is special. no further comments.

i'm one hundred percent taking a single grain of sand and making it into a sandcastle here but just imagine if
summer's family was similar to ruby's in a sense that her parents were part of the inner circle, and her existence—at the very least as a silver-eyed warrior—was kept hidden.
but instead of her parents dying on a mission, an assassin sent by salem gets to them at their home. maybe it happens when summer is older—like, "anything after 10yo" old, or so—, maybe when she already knows about silver eyes, has been told by her parents, so she has a better understanding of what's going on, and the only reason why summer survives when her parents don't is either bc a) her parents managed to hide her, and the assassin wouldn't have been searching for a child they'd have no idea even existed, or b) summer simply wasn't at home when the assassin arrived.
and in the aftermath, she gets picked up by a member of the inner circle who was too late to save her parents, but can at least take her to safety.
and all this plays a role on why summer chose to take the initiative to face salem on her own terms instead of waiting for someone to come for her and her family... or something.
like. sundered rose vs crescent rose. as a child, summer's family was sundered, torn apart like the moon on remnant, and later in life she too, in a way, followed them—thus kindly, i scatter.
but when you look at the crescent moon, you can't really tell whether it's waning or waxing; is it getting smaller, like ruby's family did in her childhood upon summer's disappearance, or is it getting bigger, like ruby's family might once again in the future?
...or maybe i'm bit too obsessed with weapon names idk
is it called sundered rose bc it's an axe or is it called sundered rose bc something significant happened in summer's past that possibly maybe relates to being sundered

sometimes i headcanon that summer and taiyang are from anywhere-but-mistral/anima bc raven and qrow already are from there and it would be a neat way to explore different areas by just their experiences without literally having to go there—
but sometimes i headcanon that they are from mistral bc the thought of raven and qrow going to beacon instead of haven specifically to avoid being recognized and what-not, only for them to end up in a team with two kids who are from the region, is, simply put. funny.

team strq cooking headcanons, because why not:
summer: excellent at baking, but somehow can't cook to save her life
taiyang: is an excellent cook, grows his own herbs and spices (gods help if someone knocked over his planters in their dorm room)
raven: can cook surprisingly well, no one believes her though
qrow: can cook, but doesn't like to. it's the only time he actually uses his semblance as an excuse to get out of doing something
