"It's quite exciting," said Sherlock Holmes, with a yawn.

Holmes being a hypocrite🥰meant with love for my favourite detective
Something I noticed immediately in my re-reading of A Study in Scarlet, was this line from Holmes, where he's discussing famous literary detectives such as Dupin and Lecoq. He says the following:
"Now, in my opinion, Dupin was a very inferior fellow. That trick of his of breaking in on his friends' thoughts with an apropos remark after a quarter of an hour's silence is really very showy and superficial."
Holmesies you can't catch me out !! You did the exact same thing in The Dancing Men!!
Holmes had been seated for some hours in silence, with his long, thin back curved over a chemical vessel in which he was brewing a particularly malodorous product. His head was sunk upon his breast, and he looked from my point of view like a strange, lank bird, with dull grey plumage and a black top-knot. "So, Watson," said he suddenly, "you do not propose to invest in South African securities?" I gave a start of astonishment. Accustomed as I was to Holmes's curious faculties, this sudden intrusion into my most intimate thoughts was utterly inexplicable. 'How on earth do you know that?' I asked.
two points: I haven't read any Dupin stories (I plan to) so I don't know how this compares to how he does it.
Secondly, you could argue it's slightly less superficial, as Holmes does go on to explain how he figured it all out.
But I just love it because it showcases Holmes's show-offy style and want to impress people (especially Watson). Him being a hypocrite here just makes him more human. He gets so caught up in wanting to be different and unique that he doesn't catch this one !! I adore that, honestly.
Edit: He does this also in The Resident Patient and The Field Bazaar

And that you blush like a girl
Tumblr media
Everyone gives Sherlock Holmes a hard time about being mean about Watson's writing, but honestly imagine you told your roommate "sure, you can write up an account of my work for the newspaper," thinking it would be like, about the murder, but then he publishes it and it's 90% about you, as a person, and it's a huge hit and now everyone in London knows that you hoard newspapers and do cocoaine when you're depressed. Because I think you'd be little miffed too.

Barely started reading study in scarlet and i find it so funny that Sherlock hates Dupin for using his vast intelligence to "show off to his friend" only to do exactly that as soon as he gets one of his own:
Tumblr media
"Friend" is used very loosely. i remind you that the detective genre was born gay and stayed that way. Curtesy of Edgar Allan Poe and (my personal belief) Charles Baudelaire.

I’m not following the Study in Scarlet letters from watson updates since I read it last year, but absolutely love this dialogue from Holmes in today’s update:
“Do you remember what Darwin says about music? He claims that the power of producing and appreciating it existed among the human race long before the power of speech was arrived at. Perhaps that is why we are so subtly influenced by it. There are vague memories in our souls of those misty centuries when the world was in its childhood.”

He's being so mean to Gregson in this scene and Gregson literally has no idea.
He follows this up by patting Gregson on the shoulder and is like "you're doing such a good job buddy!" And this dude STILL has no idea that Sherlock Holmes is making fun of him.

Direct quote from A Study in Scarlet: "Holmes was certainly not a difficult man to live with. He was quiet in his ways, and his habits were regular."
And yet nearly every adaptation (especially the more modern ones) play into the 'arsehole genius' trope and make Holmes a bad housemate.
I cannot accept 'bad housemate' Sherlock. Not when the first conversation he ever has with Watson is when he ensures that they compare habits to see if they'd be a good fit for sharing a flat.
When adapting Sherlock Holmes, I can only accept one of two things:
Holmes is genuinely a good housemate, or
Holmes is weird as hell, but there's something equally wrong with Watson to the degree that Holmes will be doing science experiments with poisons in the kitchen at 3am and all Watson does is glance at it and go "ah such quiet habits, I'm so lucky to have found such a good and reasonable housemate".

I feel like no one ever talks about the one scene in Study in Scarlet where we find out that before Watson met Holmes he was, in fact, a FAN OF DETECTIVE FICTION?? He got insulted when Holmes started hating on Dupin and Lecoq. He had faves. The FIRST thing he told Holmes when old dude said he was a detective was "oh like my blorbos! :D" and Holmes told him "your blorbos are shit". Like we talk about Watson being enamored and a d1 glazer all the time but we don't talk about the fact that he MANIFESTED ts into his life. Soulmated so hard that Holmes was his favorite genre before he even met him.

Excuse me Mr Arthur Conan Doyle, explain why I’m sitting here blushing at Watson making Sherlock blush
And Sherlock seems so happy to be complimented each time too
It’s so cute, I don’t even need fanfiction to queer-ify it.
