Not doing mentally great these days. I think it will wear off the rest of the week – good chance I'll feel fine when the bright weather arrives by the weekend. But college is really too heavy a weight currently, I feel pulled on on each and every side, the pressure is really almost too much. This persistent grey weather this entire spring puts me in the gloomiest of moods and everything feels dull and exhausting to do. I just feel extinguished.

The start of my story

It took me a long time trying to figure out how my blog was going to be named and what I will be posting. Recently I have been trough some big changes in my life and I decided I wanted to post about those events. I also happen to like drawing and sketching, so I also will be posting things I made. 

With this first post I want to share some struggles i am experiencing while starting my new education. I advance, apologies for the long post, but I hope you will read it and share you thoughts about it. Maybe give some tips if you’d like.

At the start of this school year I started following a 4 year long bachelor program about cultural heritage. It took me long enough to find this course in the first place, since I had no clue what to study next after my course media design. I didn’t want to work after that education. I hate working behind a pc all day from 9am till 5pm. I really liked art history though, but there was no bachelor program just for arts history.. So that wasn’t really an option. 

eventually after some time discussing this with my teachers during that education, and of course my parents, I came to the conclusion that I also liked museums and thinking about how to come up with- and create an exhibition. 

With that information I came out at the bachelor I am following now. Cultural heritage. After a few weeks I already noticed that it wasn’t really what i had expected. I thought there would be taught a lot of art history, and how to create an exhibition. But instead it was more cultural history (big difference), more technical stuff about exhibitions and housekeeping of collections in depots.

Sure it was and still is interesting, and I really like my workgroup. We laugh really hard about the dumbest jokes and often go out for drinks together. 

After these couple of months I am starting to notice that I really have a hard time motivating myself to do my homework and read the literature. I still go to every class and participate actively in them, but I feel a lot of doubt about it.

That doubt is really bothering me, and I don’t know how to act against it. I don’t want to quit my education because I don’t want to do nothing for half a year. And if i continue and finish the first year i have all my studypoints and I wil be able to follow any bachelor or college education I want.

During a talk with my study counselor about this issue, she said that if i don’t like this education, that it will be damn hard to keep motivating myself to finish my first year. So I really have to think hard about this if I will be able to keep on motivating my self to study, without exhausting myself. 

Now what am I going to do?? Or I push myself to finish this year, with risking exhaustion because I have to put to much effort in to it. Or I quit, and I wouldn’t have any idea what to do for the rest of the year. Plus I don’t have any idea about what kind of bachelor I would sign in for after that half year. I am going to have to make a decision though.. but what I don’t know yet.

Aisa Helps with College Apps: Part 1/5 -- Testing & Teacher Recs

Heya howdy! I’m finally starting the college application series, which has been requested various times. Hopefully I will be able to put out one part every week, woohoo! Now, let’s get started. disclaimer: this is how i personally went through the college application process - please note that i applied only to private schools in the U.S., so that’s pretty much what this is tailored to!

TESTING

Alrighty so here’s the deal with testing. You’ve got two big standardized test options: the SAT or the ACT. A grand majority of colleges treat them equally - it honestly comes down to which one you prefer. They are two very different tests, but they also have some similarities! If you’d like to compare and contrast, check out The Princeton Review, or PrepScholar, or StudyPoint!

Personally, I have taken both. I found the ACT to be much easier - my score was rather high the first time around, actually high enough that I only had to take it once! However, I did a bit better on the SAT essay than the ACT essay. **Note: There tend to be more ACT practice tests/problems/etc. because the SAT was recently revamped, so there aren’t too many official prep materials out yet!

Now, on the other hand, you’ve got SAT Subject Tests. Some schools require that you take one or two, while others list them as optional, while others don’t want them. At my school, our college counselors suggested for every student to take three, just in case.

The nice thing about Subject Tests is that you can take whichever ones you want! I took English, Math II, Spanish Literature, and Chemistry. Each one is just an hour long, and they’re all multiple choice. Every test is different - as usual, try a practice test or two ahead of time, just so that you can get used to the questions and figure our how to pace yourself when it comes to the real deal.

Frequently Asked Question: What is a good score? Well, it really, really depends. It depends on you as a student and where you’re applying - I highly suggest checking out your potential schools’ websites, and aiming from there. For me, personally, I wanted over 1450 on the SAT, over 32 on the ACT, and over 650 on my Subject Tests, but again, that’s me. Not you. So aim for whatever suits you and the schools you’re applying to!!

TEACHER RECS

Okie, so teacher rec letters are preeeetty straightforward - typically you need two letters, though it’s a good idea to check your potential schools’ sites and see what their requirements are. Sometimes you only need one, sometimes they’re optional, etc etc. 

As you may have heard, you don’t necessarily want the teacher from the class in which you got the highest grade. Although I got A’s in my Honors PreCalc class, I definitely did not want that teacher to write my letter - the fact was that he didn’t know me as a person. You want to get teachers who know you, who can write a unique and interesting letter about you. Think of teachers who you can joke with, or who you talk to on a somewhat regular basis. If nobody comes to mind, try a teacher who has had you in their class for multiple years - chances are that they have seen you grow as a student, so they can write about that! Sometimes, teachers may ask you to fill out a personality form, or they may ask for an academic resume. Try to get that back to them as soon as possible, since 1) being timely is a polite thing to do for someone who is about to write a letter regarding your academic performance and 2) these papers will often help them make their letters a bit more personalized and unique!

Additionally, you may want to consider your major when thinking of teachers to ask. A close friend of mine is going into Engineering, so one of her rec letters came from our Physics teacher, while the other came from our PreCalc teacher. Another friend of mine applied to a difficult writing-based program, so she got a rec letter from our Creative Writing teacher and another from her English teacher. If you’re not sure, I personally suggest getting one humanities teacher and one STEM teacher. This gives your future colleges points of view from both “sides” of your education. But again, see who knows you and what suits you!

Frequently Asked Question: What if I want someone outside of my school to write me a letter? GO FOR IT!! Aside from your two core curriculum letters, some schools allow you to send in supplementary letters. These could be from volunteer coordinators, religious figures, theatre directors, etc etc. Just be sure that you give them notice ahead of time and keep them updated on deadlines, so that they can submit their materials on time.
