Parade Celebrates 73rd Founding Anniversary of Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK)
Sept. 9: The parade of paramilitary and public security forces for celebrating the 73rd founding anniversary of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea was held in splendor at Kim Il Sung Square.
There was a special entrance ceremony of the combined militant band. Parachutists showed landing skill, covering the nocturnal sky in September with national flags. A column of escort planes flew past the sky above the square and fighters in the form of a fan shot off crackers, revving up the festive mood. The Ensemble of the State Affairs Commission and the Central Military Band of the Ministry of National Defence for playing music for parade took their seats at the square for rendition.
Parade columns of paramilitary and public security forces entered the square throwing out their might all around, to the tune of entrance music. At 00:00 on Thursday, the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and president of the State Affairs of the DPRK, came to the platform of the square. The moment, thunderous cheers of "hurrah!" and loud chanting of "Kim Jong Un" and "devoted defence" resounded through and fireworks shot off, presenting fantastic sea of fireworks.
Kim Jong Un extended warm greetings to all the people of the country celebrating the founding anniversary of the dignified country, waving back to the enthusiastically cheering participants in the parade and in the celebrations. Kim Jong Un and cadres of the Party, government and military were presented with fragrant bouquets by members of the Children's Union. Taking the platform were Choe Ryong Hae, Jo Yong Won, Kim Tok Hun and Pak Jong Chon. Taking the platform also were cadres of the Party and the government, leading officials of the Cabinet, commissions, ministries and national institutions, labor innovators and persons of merits who made distinguished contributions to the development of the DPRK. Also taking the platform were leading officials of the armed forces organs. Present at the platform on invitation were Kim Yong Nam, Pak Pong Ju, Kim Ki Nam, Choe Thae Bok, Kim Kyong Ok and Kim Jong Im who worked for the Party and the government for a long time.
The reviewing stands were taken by the participants in the celebrations. There was a solemn ceremony of raising a national flag. All the citizens expressed noble respects for the national flag. There was a 21-gun salute amid the playing of the song "The Glorious Motherland".
Ri Il Hwan, member of the Political Bureau and secretary of the Central Committee of the WPK, made a speech. Then there was an inspection for the preparations for the parade. Commander of the Worker-Peasant Red Guards Kang Sun Nam reported to Jo Yong Won, member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau and secretary for Organizational Affairs of the WPK Central Committee, that units of parade have lined up to get their preparations checked. Jo Yong Won inspected the units of parade. He courteously reported to the General Secretary of the WPK that paramilitary and public security forces are ready to start the parade for celebrating the 73rd founding anniversary of the DPRK.
The solemn parade of paramilitary and public security forces began. Entering the square first led by the lead car of the commander of the Worker-Peasant Red Guards was the column of the Pyongyang City Division of Party members. They are the creators of feats and fighters who devotedly carried out the Party's policies to win a victory in the campaign for protecting the people as fitting the detached corps dispatched by the Party Central Committee to the sites for recovery from disaster last year.
Following them were the column of the Worker-Peasant Red Guards of Pyongyang City, militia force defending the capital city, led by Chief Secretary of the City Party Committee of the Kim Yong Hwan and the columns of the Worker-Peasant Red Guards in North Phyongan Province and South Phyongan Province, standing guard over the border and the gateway to the capital as an impregnable fortress, each led by Chief Secretaries of the Provincial Party Committees Mun Kyong Dok and An Kum Chol.
They were followed by the columns of the red guards of North and South Hwanghae Provinces, ranks of those taking charge of the agricultural front, led by Chief Secretaries of the Provincial Party Committees Pak Chang Ho and Pak Song Chol. The columns of the red guards of Jagang and Kangwon Provinces led by Chief Secretaries of the Provincial Party Committees Kang Pong Hun and Kim Su Gil showed well the unusual pride and self-esteem of creating the spirit of the times while overcoming grim difficulties before the country and the revolution. Marching past in fine array next were the columns of the red guards of North and South Hamgyong Provinces and Ryanggang Province, being led by Chief Secretaries of the Provincial Party Committees Kim Chol Sam, Ri Jong Nam and Ri Thae Il.
Kim Jong Un sent militant salute to the columns marching past in fine array.
The columns of the Ministry of Railways and the Air Koryo Administration marched past the square. As the column of the Kim Chaek Iron and Steel Complex which is the large-scale base of metallurgical industry in the northern part of the country, the column of the Huichon Ryonha Machine Factory that gave an origin of industrial revolution in the new century and the column of the Hungnam Fertilizer Complex which is an arsenal of socialist agricultural front entered the square, the people warmly congratulated the ranks of the heroic working class. It was followed by the column of the Rakwon General Machine Enterprise and the Chollima Steel Complex.
Entering the square following it was the columns of the Ryongsong Machine Complex, the Sunchon Area Youth Coal Mining Complex and the Pyongyang Kim Jong Suk Textile Mill. The columns of emergency epidemic prevention and the Ministry of Public Health were full of patriotic enthusiasm to display the advantages of the socialist system all over the world, while firmly protecting the security of the country and its people from the worldwide pandemic. There were also the column of the State Academy of Sciences, and the column of men of culture and art and sportspersons made up of those artistes, moviemen and sportspersons who contributed to exalting the honor of the country and opening up the efflorescence of socialist culture.
Then there were the columns of Kim Il Sung University, Kim Chaek University of Technology and the Young Red Guards. Following the paramilitary force columns, ranks of public security forces marched past the platform.
Kim Jong Un sent encouraging salute to the parading columns marching past in fine array, displaying the invincibility as the dependable political guard force of our Party and the elite force holding a share of the revolutionary armed forces.
The first column was the cavalry task force column of the Public Security Forces. It was followed by a military dog search column. The mechanized columns of the Worker-Peasant Red guards entered the square, demonstrating the vitality of our Party's military line for self-defence. Following the column of the motorcycles, those in charge of the farm mechanization who were operational in the socialist cooperative fields rolled past the square driving tractors hauling artillery pieces to pound the aggressors and their vassal forces with annihilating firepower in case of emergency. The mechanized columns roared past the square, reminding that our country has turned into an impregnable fortress with a powerful militia capable of carrying out whatever operations and battles independently together with the invincible regular army.
The column of fire brigade of the Public Security Forces was the last one that concluded the parade. At the end of the parade, fireworks shot off again and an evening gala of youth and students began at the square. The spectacular fireworks added to the enthusiasm and optimism of youth and students.
After the evening gala and the display of fireworks, stormy cheers of "hurrah!" for the General Secretary again rocked the heaven and the earth. Kim Jong Un warmly acknowledged the enthusiastically cheering crowds for long. All the participants presented the greatest glory and the deepest gratitude to Kim Jong Un, a peerless hero who is fully demonstrating the new era of overall prosperity of the country and the era of our state-first principle with his ardent love and self-sacrificing dedication to the country and the people.

Briefing on a general situation of flood damage, the Supreme Leader said that the flood-stricken people must be suffering great as they are living in temporary dwelling places with their houses and family properties lost. He earnestly said that it is a crucial time that our Party must be responsible for their living and we have to go closer to them to share the pain with them and to relieve them of their sufferings.
Our state faces two challenges: anti-epidemic work to thoroughly cope with the world public health crisis and unexpected sudden natural disaster, he said, pointing out that our Party and the government must set forth correct policy direction to overcome these two crises at the same time and display excellent leadership arts in the three-dimensional and offensive campaign.

He emphasized that we should spruce up the flood-damaged area to meet not only the desire and wish of the people but also the high standard of the times, and ensure qualitative construction in appropriate places based on the opinions of the inhabitants so that no damage can occur even though there come more natural disasters and flood in the future.
The situation, in which the spread of the worldwide malignant virus has become worse, requires us not to allow any outside aid for the flood damage but shut the border tighter and carry out strict anti-epidemic work, he said, adding that information work should be conducted well so as to prevent any violation of anti-epidemic rules among inhabitants in the flood-hit area and those mobilized for the rehabilitation work.
He said that through the active rehabilitation drive we have to prove in practice once again the revolutionary nature of our Party which shares misfortune and pain with the people and protects them by removing all those pains, the advantages of our social system. He repeatedly stressed the need for our Party to fulfill its sacred duty so that it won't feel ashamed of itself before the people and surely live up to the trust and expectation of the people.
He suggested issuing a decision of the Political Bureau of the WPK Central Committee and the joint order of the WPK Central Committee, the Party Central Military Commission and the State Affairs Commission reflecting the immediate fighting tasks for finishing the most part of the flood damage rehabilitation and stabilizing the people's living by October 10 through the coordinated operation of the army and people loyal to the leadership of Party based on the great unity.

Saints of the Day – 20 September – Martyrs of Korea: St Andrew Kim Taegon, St Paul Chong Hasang & Companions – 103 saints and beati.   The Korean Martyrs were the victims of religious persecution against Catholic Christians during the 19th century in Korea.  At least 8,000 (as many as 10,000) adherents to the faith were killed during this period, 103 of whom were canonised en masse in May 1984 by St Pope John Paul.
St Andrew Kim Taegon was born to the Korean nobility;  his parents were converts to Christianity and his father was martyred.   Andrew was baptised at age 15, then travelled 1,300 miles to the nearest seminary in Macao, China.   He became the first native Korean priest and the first priest to die for the faith in Korea.   He was the leader of the Martyrs of Korea.   (21 August 1821, Solmoi, Chungcheong-do, South Korea – tortured and beheaded on 16 September 1846 at Saenamteo, Seoul, Korea).   He is the Patron of the Korean clergy.
Tumblr media
St Paul Chong Hasan was the son of Yak Jong Church who was martyred in 1801 in the persecution of Shin-Yu, an attack on the faith that killed all the clergy in the country.   Son of Saint Yu Cecilia;  brother of Saint Jung Hye.   Paul, though a layman, reunited the scattered Christians and encouraged them to keep their faith and live their faith.   He wrote the Sang-Je-Sang-Su which explained to the Korean government why the Church was no threat to them.   He crossed into China nine times, working as a servant to the Korean diplomatic corps.   There he worked to get the bishop of Beijing to send more priests to Korea.   He pleaded directly to Rome for help and on 9 September 1831, Pope Gregory X proclaimed the validity of the Korean Catholic diocese.   When the clergy began to return, Paul entered the seminary.   However, he died in the Gi Hye persecution of 1839 before he could be ordained.   He is regarded as one of the great founders of the Catholic Church in Korea.   (1795 in Korea – martyred on 22 September 1839).  He is the Patron of the Catholic Laity and various apostolates and movements in Korea.

Andrew Kim Taegon, Paul Chong Hasang and 101 Companions:
The Christian community first began to take shape when Yi Sung-hun started to study Christian doctrine by himself and was eventually baptised and given the name Peter in 1784.   Because of their belief in the Christian God, the first Korean Christians were persecuted repeatedly, rejected by their families and suffered a loss of their social rank. Despite persecutions, the faith continued to spread.
The Christian community in Korea was given the assistance of two Chinese priests but their ministry was short-lived and another forty years passed before the Paris Foreign Mission Society began its work in Korea with the arrival of Father Mauban in 1836.   A delegation was selected and sent to Beijing on foot, 750 miles, in order to ask the Bishop of Beijing to send them bishops and priests.   The same appeal was made to the Holy Father in Rome.   Serious dangers awaited the missionaries who dared to enter Korea. The bishops and priests who confronted this danger, as well as the lay Christians who aided and sheltered them, were in constant threat of losing their lives.
In fact, until the granting of religious liberty in Korea in 1886, there was a multitude of “disciples who shed their blood, in imitation of Christ Our Lord and who willingly submitted to death, for the salvation of the world” (Lumen Gentium, 42).   Among those who died and later labelled as martyrs, were eleven priests and ninety-two lay people who would be canonised as saints.
Bishop Laurent Imbert and ten other French missionaries were the first Paris Foreign Mission Society priests to enter Korea and to embrace a different culture for the love of God.   During the daytime, they kept in hiding but at night they travelled about on foot attending to the spiritual needs of the faithful and administering the sacraments.
The first Korean priest, Andrew Kim Tae-gon, prompted by his faith in God and his love for the Christian people, found a way to make the difficult task of a missionary entry into Korea.  However, just thirteen months after his ordination he was put to death by the sword when he was just 26 years old and the holy oils of ordination were still fresh on his hands.Paul Chong Ha-sang, Augustine Yu Chin-gil and Charles Cho Shin-chol had made several visits to Beijing in order to find new ways of introducing missionaries into Korea. Since the persecution of 1801, there had been no priest to care for the Christian community. Finally, they succeeded in opening a new chapter in the history of the extension of the Church in Korea with the arrival of a bishop and ten priests of the Paris Foreign Mission Society.
Among the martyrs honoured were fifteen virgins, including the two sisters Agnes Kim Hyo-ju and Columba Kim Hyo-im who loved Jesus with undivided heart (I Cor.7, 32–34).   These women, in an era when Christian religious life was still unknown in Korea, lived in community and cared for the sick and the poor.   Similarly, John Yi Kwang-hyol died a martyr’s death after having lived a life of celibacy in consecrated service to the Church.
Tumblr media
It is also important to recall in a special way some of the other martyrs who were canonised that day:  Damien Nam Myong-hyok and Maria Yi Yon-hui were models of family life;  John Nam Chong-sam, though of high social rank, was a model of justice, chastity and poverty;  John Pak Hu-jae who, after he lost his parents in the persecutions, learnt to survive by making straw sandals;  Peter Kwon Tug-in who devoted himself to meditation;  Anna Pak A-gi who, although she did not have a deep grasp of Christian doctrine, was wholly devoted to Jesus and His Blessed Mother;  and finally, Peter Yu Tae-chol who at the tender age of 13, bravely confessed his faith and died a martyr.
Tumblr media
More than 10,000 martyrs died in persecutions which extended over more than one hundred years.  Of all these martyrs, seventy-nine were beatified in 1925.   They had died in the persecutions of 1839 (Ki-hae persecution), 1846 (Pyong-o persecution) and 1866 (Pyong-in persecution). In addition, twenty-four martyrs were beatified in 1968.   All together, 103 martyrs were canonised on 6 May 1984-on the shores of the Han River and in view of the martyrs’ shrines at Saenamto and Choltusan, where they went to their eternal reward - ALL THE NAMES ARE here https://anastpaul.wordpress.com/2017/09/20/saints-of-the-day-20-september-martyrs-of-korea-st-andrew-kim-taegon-st-paul-chong-hasang-companions-103-saints-and-beati/

'We Reject Sanctions & U.S. Threats Against DPRK!’: Mass Rally and Demonstration in Pyongyang
Pyongyang, August 9 (KCNA) -- A Pyongyang city mass rally was held at Kim Il Sung Square on Wednesday to fully support the statement of the DPRK government.
Attending it were Kim Ki Nam, Choe Thae Bok, Ri Su Yong and others, Kim Yong Dae, chairman of the C.C., Korean Social Democratic Party, officials of the Cabinet, public organizations, ministries and national institutions and institutions and industrial establishments in the city of Pyongyang and working people and youth and students.
The DPRK government statement was read out by Ri Su Yong, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), member of the State Affairs Commission of the DPRK and vice-chairman of the C.C., WPK.
Kim Ki Nam, member of the Political Bureau of the C.C., WPK, member of the State Affairs Commission of the DPRK and vice-chairman of the WPK Central Committee, addressed the meeting.
Noting that the U.S. and its vassal forces recently cooked up "sanctions resolution" over the DPRK's test-launch of ICBM by abusing the name of the UN again, the speaker condemned it as an unprecedented unethical deed and an intolerable hideous state terrorism aimed to completely violate the DPRK's sovereignty and rights to existence and development.
He said: The U.S., the most shameless gangster-like state, framed up the "sanctions resolution" with dastards acting as voting machine without any principle. This is no more than desperate efforts of those frightened at the might of the DPRK which rose to the high strategic position as a nuclear power of Juche and world-level military power.
The DPRK's access to the strongest nukes and rockets is a legitimate step to defend the destiny of the country and nation and ensure the right to the independent development. The imperialistic U.S. styling itself as the "only superpower in the world" would cook up such dirty criminal documents, daring not to provoke the DPRK though it mobilize all its vassal forces. Such reality clearly proves that our Party's line of simultaneously developing the two fronts is the eternal banner and invincible weapon for peace and prosperity.
The hostile forces have so far cooked up UN "sanctions resolutions" several times, faulting the DPRK's exercise of just rights. But any sanctions and pressure could not browbeat the DPRK but hardened its independent faith and resulted in increasing the might of its self-development.
We will further increase the might of justice to wipe out the source of all injustice and evils now that the gangster-like acts of the U.S. have reached the height, and clearly show what miserable and wretched fate those standing in the way of the DPRK will have to face.
The neighboring countries which blindly followed the U.S. as its puppets, away with elementary justice and etiquette, will never be able to evade the responsibility for having coiled up the situation on the Korean peninsula and endangered peace and security in the region.
Though the U.S. and the groups counting on it are getting so frantic, the DPRK remains unshaken as it is possessed of the strongest nuclear weapons and ICBM, the speaker said, calling on all the people to staunchly struggle for the final victory in standoff with the U.S.-led imperialists and building a powerful socialist nation under the ever-victorious guidance of respected Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un.
Then, representatives of various circles made speeches.
Speaking on behalf of the Korean working class, Pak Hyong Ryol, manager of the Pyongyang Cornstarch Factory, expressed fully support for the DPRK government statement which categorically rejects the "sanctions resolutions" cooked up by the U.S. and other hostile forces over the DPRK's ICBM test-launch.
On behalf of the agricultural workers, Jong Yong Suk, chairwoman of the Ryokpho District Cooperative Farm Management Committee, expressed the resolve to foil the enemies' vicious sanctions and blockade with increased agricultural production, bearing in mind that rice just means socialism and bullets and bombs for wiping out the enemies.
Representing the intellectuals, Kim Chol Ho, dean of faculty of Kim Chaek University of Technology, said that the intellectuals would smash the enemies' iron net of sanctions with world-startling sci-tech achievements in keeping with the present situation where the U.S. imperialists made such unprecedented provocation as totally checking the DPRK's normal trade and economic exchanges.
Speaking on behalf of the youths, Mun Chol, first secretary of the Pyongyang City Youth League Committee, said that the young people in the country would become five million human bullets and bombs and nuclear warheads to blow the U.S. from this planet.
Then, followed a mass demonstration.
Its participants marched in fine array to the tune of brass band music, holding placards with such slogans as "Let's become bullets and bombs devotedly defending respected Supreme Leader Comrade Kim Jong Un!" and "We fully support the statement of the DPRK government categorically rejecting the 'sanctions resolution' against the DPRK!"

US-North Korean Officials Meet at Moscow Nonproliferation Conference
U.S. and North Korean officials held a meeting at a nonproliferation conference in Moscow, a former U.S. official who attended the conference told VOA’s Korean Service, as the denuclearization talks between Pyongyang and Washington remain deadlocked.
“I was told that there was such a meeting between the U.S. and North Korean officials,” Thomas Countryman, former acting undersecretary of state of arms control and international security, said after the conference that ended Saturday.
U.S. officials, led by Mark Lambert, director of the office of Korean affairs at the State Department, attended the three-day annual Moscow Nonproliferation Conference.
Jo Chol Su, head of the North Korean Foreign Ministry’s North American department, led the delegation from Pyongyang.
Lee Do-hoon, South Korea’s chief nuclear negotiator, was also present but did not engage in talks with North Korean representatives other than to exchange greetings. About 250 participants from 40 countries also attended.
Organized by Russia’s Center for Energy and Security Studies (CENESS), the conference is held every year to discuss global nuclear issues, including the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
FILE - U.S. Assistant Secretary for International Security and Nonproliferation Thomas Countryman talks to the media at the government building in Skopje, Macedonia, February 2011.
Relaying North Korea’s remarks, Countryman said, “I did not hear anything new. I heard the same old rhetoric from speakers about hostile policy, about denuclearization on the entire world, about the peace-loving nature of the DPRK” — in English, North Korea’s official name for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
Denuclearization talks stalled
The meeting between the U.S. and North Korea comes at a time when talks between the two sides remain deadlocked because of an inability to reach a compromise on how to synchronize the steps of denuclearization and sanctions relief.
Washington has been maintaining its position of keeping sanctions on North Korea until it takes steps toward full denuclearization, while Pyongyang has been insisting the U.S. first relax sanctions.
The denuclearization talks have remained deadlocked since the failed Hanoi Summit in February, despite Washington’s attempts to break the stalemate at the working-level talks in Stockholm in early October. The Stockholm talks broke down when North Korea walked away from the negotiating table.
Kelly Magsamen, former principal deputy assistant secretary of defense for Asia and Pacific security affairs in the Obama administration, told VOA’s Korean Service that both Kim and Trump have not defined the scope of denuclearization.
“I don’t think that Kim Jong Un has made a strategic decision about the scope of what he’s going to give up in terms of his nuclear weapons,” Magsamen said. “Likewise, President Trump hasn’t figured out what he can accept in terms of any kind of capability that the North Koreans may continue to possess. So, I don’t think either side has done the deep thinking about the end state we’re trying to get to.”
FILE - People watch television file footage of a North Korean missile launch at a railway station in Seoul, Oct. 31, 2019.
North Korean tests
While North Korea has been engaged in talks with the U.S. this year, it has conducted multiple tests since May, ramping up pressure for sanctions relief and demanding the U.S. change its position by the end-of-the-year deadline Pyongyang has insisted Washington meets.
During the nonproliferation conference, Jo reiterated that the U.S. change its stance by Pyongyang’s self-imposed deadline.
“We’ve given the United States quite a lot of time, and we’re waiting for an answer by the end of this year,” Jo said. “But I must say that the window of opportunity closes every day.”
On Wednesday, North Korea again warned that the U.S. will face consequences if it does not meet the end of year deadline.
“If the current flow in the political situation doesn’t change, the United States will soon face a bigger threat and harsh suffering that will force them to acknowledge their mistake,” said an unnamed spokesperson for North Korea’s State Affairs Commission in a statement carried by state media Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
Baik Sung-won and Christy Lee contributed to this report from VOA's Korean Service.
