Mini-review:

Look, I'm not gonna say this was good, but it kept me engaged throughout. And it's all thanks to the two leads. They basically save the whole thing with their chemistry and their comedic chops. I was particularly impressed by Lomon, who went out of his comfort zone for this role and delivered in every single scene. The show worked better as comedy than anything else, since it was pretty funny at times. But yeah, whenever it tried to highlight serious issues, it ended up falling into the same old stereotypes. And some of the final twists made little to no sense. I don't regret watching Branding in Seongsu, though, cause the episodes were short and it never had time to get boring. But I do wish the writing and directing were as good as the acting, or less messy at the very least.

REPLY 1988 - My Youth

The moment I finished episode 20, the last episode, I burst into tears. I don’t know why but it feels good over the last clips. The last clips that showing me how the families left Ssangmun-dong one by one. The last clips where it showed how young Duk-seon, Taek, Jung-hwan, Dong-ryong, and Sun-woo back then. How they slowly grow up, and not being able to drink and hang out as often as they were. I don’t know why, but I feel sorry for it. I feel sorry that things changed and cannot bring back than it was before.

 I see myself in them. My past life with my father. Why can’t I come back in my past and see my dad again and see his smiling face again? I want to see my dad again. I want to feel his warmth. I want to be reassured again that I have him at my back counting on me, caring for me, and loving me despite the ugliness in my life. This is the past that can no longer bring back. It can no longer happen because he already left. He is dead already. I don’t understand why I keep frowning in the past. Magnifying my drawbacks. But when the time already passed, I miss it. I miss it a lot. I miss my young older sister who is always angry but still deciding for the sake of us. I miss my sisters who are always laughing, singing, and making funny videos. I miss the foods made by my mom regardless of how my father badmouth about it. I miss my old self, my younger self who does not worry too much. It is no longer the same anymore. My mother is old now that we also take care of her now. My older sister is living in another house with her own family. My younger sister next to me is not always in our house living her own life. My two younger sisters are doing their best to find out their path. And me, still in a bizarre tunnel of time finding out where should I go to finally find my happiness. Not even have a loved one. Maybe, my life is not perfect right now. But I know now that this very moment. This unrecognizable moment will be a precious one that I will also miss when I get older. I will miss this. I know I will miss how noisy my neighborhood is. I will miss every sweet potato that my mother and sister buy every week for me. I will miss the food that we make because our mom is busy at the store. I will miss my dogs and the moments when we are in shock seeing them stealing food or fighting with our cats. Yes, it is important to have a normal life (Sun Woo). 

And it is equally important to have a life driven by passion (Taek).

I hope that everyone will feel warmth in their life. I believe everyone deserves happiness and able to give happiness to someone else. I am hoping that for anyone that is reading this, I wish you happiness, warmth, and family in your life. You deserve that.

The Divine Principle is a clever construction. Moon’s first edition reveals a big lie.

Wolli Wonbon was an early version of the Divine Principle “written” by Moon himself in two notebooks in Busan in 1951-52. A few copies were hand-written and distributed. Kim Won-pil had an early copy which he got typed into a computer when he was living in Japan. Park Chung-hwa also had a pair of Wolli Wonbon notebooks. It was largely a synthesis of the work of a number of leaders of small religious groups that pre-dated Moon – Kim Song-do, Lee Yong-do, Baek Nam-ju, Chong Duk-eun and Kim Baek-moon, etc. Kim Baek-moon had studied theology, unlike Sun Myung Moon whose highest education was evening classes on electrical engineering at a Tokyo High School.

Kim Baek-moon devised the basic theological structure of 1. Ideal, 2. Fall of Man and 3. History of Restoration. It was also he who created the Parallels of History culminating in 1917 (400 years after Martin Luther’s theses). 1917 was chosen because it was the year of Kim Baek-moon’s birth.

There is a Korean report that Moon got a follower to obtain Kim’s notes while both were refugees in Busan in 1952. Kim was living in the Dongnae district of Busan when his notes were stolen. He was furious. He eventually got his notes back after about six months – meantime Moon had copied all Kim’s ideas. LINK

In the 1970s one of the 36 Blessed Couples said he knew very well that many ideas had come from Kim Baek-moon. (One of his own relatives had been a follower of Kim before switching to Moon.) The 36 member said the important point was that Moon had got the Divine Principle out to the world.

In the end Sun Myung Moon was elevated by all the early church members, and the Unification Church, and given all the credit for the ‘revelations’ contained in the Divine Principle.

In Wolli Wonbon Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene. This was confirmed in 2012 by Dr Andrew Wilson, a Unification Church theologian at the US Unification Theological Seminary. A Sanctuary Church leader recently commented about this major revelation concerning, Wolli Wonbon the foundational version of the DP: “I would think the probable reason was that, in consultation with Eu Hyo-won, Father decided that this was not something that would help Christians to accept him.”

Between 1952 and 1957 Moon changed that DP plot line to claiming that Jesus failed because he did NOT marry!

The first DP book in Korean was published in 1957.

The ‘Mary Magdalene as the wife of Jesus’ narrative has massive implications for the entire Unification Theology that was later put together. Wolli Wonbon, long kept hidden, reveals the lie.

You see it from the beginning. when that Senior took Sun Woo's necklace and insulted his memory of his father, whose fist flying out first? Jung Hwan's.

Which member of the family to go very out of character and act embarassingly just to put the smile back on the father's face? Jung Hwan.

Who's the first to the rescue when Sun Woo broke his leg? Or when Dong Ryong literally broke his ass? Jung Hwan.

Who became an air force pilot just because his brother couldn't be, due to his heart condition? Jung Hwan.

And when Jung Bong tells him to reach for his own dream, it only strengthened his resolve to be an air force pilot.

Who goes all the way to Sacheon just to be the 'good daughter' and ease his mother's menopause? Jung Hwan.

Who decided to leave to Sacheon by the bus, lied that his car broke when just before he said to his mother he had to leave early because he had to drive his car-so he can be there for Sun Woo, even if it's just to eat and drink beside him? Jung Hwan.

Jung Hwan is always decisive, always very resolute in making his friends and family happy.

He's only hesitating when it comes to pursuing his romantic interest.

Duk Seon was his first love. That kind of love that gives you warm and fuzzy feelings but isn't mature enough to be understanding nor strong enough to make you act on it. It should be left there with the memories of passing youth.

Jung Hwan understood this, after he realized Taek forfeited his match just because he couldn't stand the thought of Duk Seon being alone.

Taek who got lost easily and couldn't even park his own car got there before him. What's the odd of it actually happening?

So he left that 'first love' behind along with the fiancee ring'. And he never looked back.

It was a very poignant closure for the first love that blossomed when you were 18.

And do you see what happened after he let go? He was happy.

Have you seen Jung Hwan acted very lightly and very easy going around Duk Seon like he did in the car in ep 18? Or the big, unburdened smile when he saw Taek in Sacheon?

Jung Hwan was fine. He'd take his time in finding love.

He's surrounded by friends and family who loved him, a job that he loved and as an officer, he could order people around and look super cool.

He's a very lucky man. ✨

But apparently he was indignant about the relationship between his wife and Teacher Moon. That is why he called Teacher Moon ‘the devil’.

Oh Yeong-choon witnessed to Lee Duk-sam in Busan. After Lee Duk-sam joined, she brought her two daughters, Choi Soon-shil and Choi Soon-wha, into the UC. Choi Soon-yeong who was younger resisted recuitment, even though he was under pressure from his mother to join. Moon took the daughters to Seoul to be with him in the fall of 1953. It has been reported that he “restored” the two of them in a small hotel near the Seoul train station. Soon-shil went to Yonsei University and Soon-wha to Ewha Womans University. In 1964 Soon-wha traveled to Washington, DC, to go to university there. She wanted to get away from Moon. In 1965, during his first world tour, Moon spent three months in DC having sex with Soon-wha, aka Annie. He did not leave the US until he knew she was pregnant. Sam Park was born on January 28, 1966.

Reply 1988 Review

I just finished watching Reply 1988 last week. I did not expect that this kdrama will be so great that I cannot move on from it.

Reply 1988 is about the everyday lives of the five families living in Ssangmundong, Seoul. You will feel nostalgic while watching it due to its 80's setting, bringing you back to your younger years where playing outside your home and growing up with your childhood friends have become a huge part of your life.

I got engaged to this kdrama because it feels like I am also part of their story. I can see myself in every character's shoes. The series covered every memorable moments and how they strive the different hardships they have experienced. Each episode is an hour and 30 minutes long but still leaves me hanging every time.

This series is definitely a must watch! It will give you so much life learning lessons. You will see how each character evolved and matured as they grow up. The friendship formed in the neighborhood is unbreakable. It also shows the importance of family and how parents make lots of sacrifices for their children. And when it comes to problems, you do not need to carry it all by yourself. You will be needing someone to help you too. You will also learn how time and courage are important when it comes to love.  

There are also snippets from the future were the husband of Duk-Seon was revealed.

The Main Cast

1. Lee Hye-ri as Sung Duk-Seon / Sung Soo-Yeon

Duk-Seon is the middle child in her family. She brings a lot of energy in this drama because of her dancing skills and cute personality.

2. Park Bo-gum as Choi Taek

Choi Taek is a genius Go player (a board game) who lives with his dad. He is the quiet one in the group.  You will definitely fall in love with his smiles.

3. Ryu Jun-yeol as Kim Jung-hwan

I got my eyes on Jung-Hwan because of his stoic personality. I like how he puts other people first before himself.

4. Go Kyung-pyo as Sung Sun-woo

Sun-Woo is the ideal big brother in the neighborhood. He is very caring to his sister and a reliable son.

5. Lee Dong-hwi as Ryu Dong-ryong

Dong-Ryong is the funniest one. He loves to sing and dance where he got from his dad.

The Sung Family

The Sung family is not very well-off. They live in the basement of Jung-Hwan's house. Dong-Il which is the head of the family works as a banker to feed their children and pay off their debts. Il-Hwa is a regular housewife who shows her love and support to her family by cooking for them and doing the chores. Bo-ra is the eldest child. She is an intelligent young student who got a scholarship to go college. She also has temper issues but  as you watch her, you will love her character. No-eul is the youngest and the kindest among the siblings. He has the passion for singing and won in a contest in their neighborhood. He was described as matured looking in the outside but a young at heart.

The Kim Family

Jung-Bong is the eldest son of their family. They became rich because he was fond of collecting lotto tickets. From living to one bedroom apartment, now they have a 3 bedroom house with spacious sala where most of the celebrations in the neighborhood were held. Sung-Kyun and Mi-ran  are their parents. The father works in an electronic shop while the mother is a housewife. You will like the relationship between this couple.

Sun-Young is a single mother who is living with her two children. After her husband died, she experienced a lot of struggles raising them. She has a happy personality but she will make you cry in her dramatic scenes.

The Choi Family

Mr. Choi moved to Ssangmundong when his wife passed way. He owns a jewelry shop in the neighborhood. He raised his only son Taek and supported him all the way to his Baduk matches (Go board game).

If you have not seen this series yet, I think now is the great time. You must have seen a lot kdramas during this quarantine but this one is definitely worth it!
