The current system is voluntary and merely reactive to the purchasing choices of consumers and the problem is consumers are uninformed.

Taxes and Subsidies

Again, the other solution is to implement a carbon tax. The point in doing this is to make high-carbon items more expensive making society invest in eco-friendly alternatives that are carbon neutral. For example, the fast-food industry creates a lot of carbon. Agriculture, specifically beef is the leading contributor to CO2 in the atmosphere. We could make a law stating you have to be carbon neutral and you can either extract carbon yourself or buy carbon credits. This would promote carbon farming.

In the same vein, we could subsidize products that are carbon neutral to make them cheaper having a similar economic effect. One example is that we could subsidize food meal kits. The University of Michigan recently tweeted a study that found meal kits are 33% more efficient due to less waste. The goal would be to make high carbon products more expensive with the tax and/or subsidize low to no carbon products to reflect the environmental cost and encourage sustainable alternatives that are cheaper.

Is it businesses not providing a pro-environmental stance, or is it consumers not investing in environmentally friendly businesses? For the current system, one of the biggest problems is consumer ignorance or that people aren’t aware of the problem. Subaru BRZ: A bonafide sports coupe with the wrong badge

I’ll admit it, I reserved Subaru’s BRZ so I could enjoy the fall foliage on some twisties. I wasn’t disappointed, but tonight I find myself heading down the 401 towards Cornwall when Stealers Wheel comes on the sat radio with their 70’s hit, Stuck in the Middle With You. About 40 years I found myself in the back seat of a ’64 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 with my buddies, Joe and Sal. Andy was driving while Rick, the car’s owner was riding shot gun when at exactly the same spot Stealers Wheel came on. I remember because it was the joke of the night…stuck in the middle with you, and yes we were heading to Cornwall after cruising down Montreal’s lakeshore. Five scallywags going to a new town in another province, if for no other reason than to prolong the drive. Like that memorable night the rain was pelting on the windshield, the wash from the semis rendering the wipers useless for what seems like an eternity on the old lady. Unlike that night, I’m alone, the wipers are doing an incredible job and the song never sounded better thanks to the BRZ’s 8-speaker sound system.

While I’m reminiscing about years gone by it’s hard to imagine that the Subaru BRZ is already eight years old. Unlike some modern cars, sport or otherwise the BRZ’s styling is as fresh today as it was back in 2012 and shows no sign of aging. If anything the BRZ looks better today then it did at the launch when it was introduced alongside the Scion FR-S (now the Toyota 86), which it shares much of the DNA with.

Everyone at the launch was excited to have another rear-wheel-drive sports coupe on the market and I brought up the hypothetical question of having a factory-sponsored race series with the two cars. With near perfect weight distribution, crisp handling and priced within everyone’s budget the BRZ is the whole sports car package. And yet I can’t figure out for the love of me why I our roads aren’t covered with them.

So listen up readers, there are four trim levels that make up the BRZ with prices start very reasonably at a mere $29,958 for the base model which packs 205 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque and will send you down the road to a hundred clicks in 7.4 seconds. If you want an automatic the Sport-tech will fill your fancy at $33,358. Mind you there is a slight price to be paid in performance output (200 horses and 150lb-ft) and .6 seconds slower to the century mark. My Sport-tech RS came in at the same price as its automatic counterpart and is the darling of the group with 205 horses mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, large 326 mm front vented and 316 mm rear vented discs highlighted with red Brembo calipers. Traction control and Track mode are available across the board, something you will find only in big buck sports sedans.

Sure, there will always be those who’ll argue that the BRZ could use a stronger dose of horsepower and torque. They’re the same people that horsepower numbers are never enough. But the BRZ’s trump card is its precise, nimble and communicative handling, at a fraction of the price of other sporty coupes regardless whether they come from Japan or Germany.

Mazda’s MX5 may seem like a viable alternative, particularly with its roadster appeal, but the Subie’s roomier interior and larger cargo capacity make the BRZ more practical for weekend outings, and let’s not forget that the Mazda starts at 33 grand for the soft top and 40 Gs for the targa iteration.

Even the top of the line BRZ tS equipped with 18” wheels and beefier STI tuned suspension, bests the Mazda’s tag at $35,758.

The BRZ also wins me over time and time again with its simplistic interior. While getting in isn’t a problem, my aging body, the low stance of this sport coupe, and the side bolstered alcantara covered seats (great for keeping you planted on the twisties) make getting out gracefully a challenge.

Back to the positives, there are no complicated gizmos to take my mind off driving. A real rear hand brake not a pseudo e-brake further adds into making this a true driver’s car. Controls are easy to read and fall intuitively into your hands. There’s plenty of head and legroom even those surpassing the 6–foot mark.

While there is a back seat, I honestly can’t imagine anyone trying to get in or worse getting of there. Different story if this would be a convertible. Thankfully the seat folds flat expanding the already large trunk, great for apple picking while leaf peeping as well as getting the weekend’s renovation supplies.

The view out the windshield is one of the best of any sports car and with the mirrors properly adjusted; there are no blind spots. The view out the back glass is better than expected and the rear wing never got in my line of sight. Kudos Subaru.

Is everything rosy about the BRZ. Well I would have preferred to have more sidewall on my tires. Ontario or Quebec, our roads aren’t made to be driven with low profile rubber. I’d seriously look into getting a 50 series rubber over the 215/45/17s that came with my ride. The Michelin Primacy tires were great in the rain, until you went off the main path and got into the slime, that’s when they went squirrely.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary describes a sports car as “a low small usually 2-passenger automobile designed for quick response, easy maneuverability, and high-speed driving”. Clearly the BRZ fits the bill. So those of you who are still griping about all the useless gizmos and looking for a pure form of driving look no further. Take a trip down to your local Subaru dealer for a test drive, guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

I’m sure that if the BRZ had a German badge on it, it would be selling like hot cakes, too bad because this is the sports car in its truest form. A suggestion to Subaru/Toyota, maybe a convertible version…

2018 Subaru Crosstrek Long-Term Verdict: Still a Solid CUV After One Year?

Driving back from a day of off-roading at Hungry Valley, I detoured through some canyon roads near Malibu. Still feeling the adrenaline from the 4×4 practice area of the park, I pushed the little Subie harder than ever. Tires were squealing, and my heart was racing. This might sound crazy, but the lifted hatchback can be flogged through corners harder than most small-crossover competitors before the all-season tires raise the white flag. Back on the highway, I couldn’t help but think how multitalented the Crosstrek is.

After a year in a 2018 Crosstrek, we can confirm that the MotorTrend favorite doesn’t just cover the basics better than most. It’s also great at extracurricular activities. Around town, the Crosstrek rides very well, soaking up bumps, dips, and imperfections like a premium vehicle and with almost zero rattling. On a horribly rough freeway on-ramp near our office, many other vehicles bounce around, emitting jingles and jangles while the steering wheel shakes side to side. Not in the Crosstrek, which irons out the ramp without any steering wheel drama. Much of this has to do with its very solid chassis. I intentionally hit bumps and dips when I test cars, and the Crosstrek barely noticed. With its 8.7 inches of ground clearance, I never worried about bottoming out on dips.

The comfortable ride continues off the asphalt. Bumps, ruts, and rocks are nicely absorbed by the Stablex dampers. At one point in Hungry Valley, I found myself driving down a dirt road at 40 mph as if I was in some kind of Baja desert race. A quick twist of the steering wheel induced a fun and controlled slide. As I discovered in my off-roading adventure, mud, sand, rocks, and ruts didn’t stop the Crosstrek. And although most owners will keep it on asphalt, it should be nice to know that this little thing off-roads better than most expect.

I wasn’t able to off-road in the snow, but the Crosstrek’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system with X-Mode should make easy work of it. Driving in the rain was actually lots of fun thanks to the loads of traction. For kicks, I would pull away from a stoplight very quickly without any wheel spin, leaving all others far behind me. In the event of having to make a quick turn on a busy street with speeding cars, have no fear, as breaking traction even in the rain is difficult.

Considering the Crosstrek’s competitive set, the spacious cabin is styled well and has many quality parts that sometimes make you forget you’re in Subaru’s cheapest crossover. The orange stitching on the seats and steering wheel pop, there are plenty of textured and soft-touch surfaces, the blinker and wiper stalks don’t feel flimsy, and most buttons and switches feel good. The rearview camera has sharp resolution, but I wish the 6.5-inch touchscreen was a little larger. (An 8.0-inch screen is available on Limited and hybrid models; our tester was a midlevel Premium.) My favorite interior component is something you constantly touch, the steering wheel. The grips are large, the leather feels good, the paddle shifters are easily flickable, and it looks good. But the best part is actually the feel. When I review other cars, it’s rare for one to have better steering feel. The Crosstrek’s is almost perfectly weighted and very precise, with a decent amount of feedback (rare for the segment), and its quick ratio is fun when pushing it. This is something the Crosstrek doesn’t need, but it’s refreshing to see in a crossover. It’s also one of the reasons why the Subie handles so well.

Plenty of staffers used the Subaru for long trips, and for good reason. Besides the comfort level, the Crosstrek has a large 16.6-gallon tank and delivers 33 mpg on the highway with the CVT. The rear seats are roomy, and the cargo area should be large enough for most. Apple CarPlay (or Android Auto) keeps passengers entertained, and if there is an emergency, simply hit the SOS call button near the map lights. Additionally, even though visibility is good, the added assistance of the large yellow warning light of the blind-spot monitoring system will help keep things safe. If your trip is in the mountains, engine braking is surprisingly strong, and the paddle shifters are responsive.

But like any vehicle, there are plenty of ways to improve the little Subaru. In my third update I complained about its nonlinear acceleration, lack of a proximity key with push-start ignition for the price (the feature becomes standard on the higher Limited trim), and door locks that don’t automatically lock or unlock (even when you drive away). Another thing about those door locks: When locked, pulling the handle won’t open the door like in many vehicles; you have to press the unlock button or manually unlock it. Getting out of a modern-day car shouldn’t require an extra step, and it could slow you down in case of an emergency.

I was always surprised with how many people complimented our Crosstrek’s exterior color.

I addressed the Crosstrek’s just-adequate acceleration in my track-day update. Speaking of acceleration, when driving the Crosstrek hard, the CVT engages what feels like a temporary Sport mode (an official Sport mode doesn’t exist) by becoming extra responsive. This is fine when having fun, but it can be annoying when you aren’t. For example, if you apply a lot of throttle to beat traffic, be careful when you press the gas again; even a light application will result in a jerk because the transmission still thinks you want to go fast.

As much as I like the interior for the price point, I see room for improvement. The instrument cluster and small display screen look cheap and old, and so does the small upper center display screen. But those can be upgraded with the Limited or hybrid trims. The steering wheel column cover looks like a piece of construction paper, the heated seat switches and X-Mode buttons aren’t up to par, and the center stack looks plain. I‘m a big fan of quality-feeling shifters, like the Limited and hybrid models have. Our Premium trim tester’s sounds and feels clunky. Additionally, I wish the USB ports were front facing, rear HVAC vents should be available, and more interior color is needed—the cabin is too dark. Lastly, the infotainment system is easy to use, and Apple CarPlay connects quickly, though it needs to react quicker to your inputs. There’s a significant delay between your finger touching the screen and the system responding.

The Crosstrek proved to be reliable during our 13 months and 20,939 miles in it. We took it into the dealership three times for scheduled maintenance (7,500-mile intervals) and replaced a tire due to a slow leak from a gash in the sidewall. During one of the dealership visits, a recall for the stereo head unit was completed free of charge, but I never noticed any connectivity issues. The maintenance visits totaled $281.85, and the new tires cost $248.91. We averaged 25.9 mpg, a bit below the 2018 Crosstrek’s 27/33 mpg city/highway EPA ratings but within the 24.5/35.1 mpg results from our EQUA Real MPG testing. Our former long-term Jeep Renegade cost us $67.35 in scheduled maintenance, but that was with half the miles; had the Renegade been driven a comparable 20,000 miles, its maintenance visits still would have been $100 or more below the Crosstrek. Our long-term Honda HR-V ($149.29 for two service visits over 20,348 miles) was also cheaper to maintain. A 2016 Mazda CX-3 tester ($534.34 over 35,386 miles and four service visits) was also cheaper to maintain per mile.

With a bit more power and some interior upgrades, the Subaru Crosstrek would be damn near perfect for a crossover. Despite its shortcomings, we’re sorry to see the Crosstrek leave our long-term fleet.

Consumer Reports Picks Its Top Car Brands

Four brands stand at the top of the annual Consumer Reports car issue. Three of them, Porsche, Genesis, and Subaru all received brand rankings of 80 or more. The magazine gives a recommended rating to every model sold by Porsche, Genesis, and the fourth-highest-scoring brand, Mazda, while every Subaru is recommended except for the WRX.

Two vehicles earned the highest overall scores: the Toyota Avalon family sedan (main photo) and the Kia Telluride SUV that won several car/truck of the year awards. Each received 93 of 100 possible points. The details are in the magazine’s April 2020 issue.

33 car brands ranked by overall score, which comprises road tests, reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety. CR says the road-test score is based on 50 different tests; reliability is based on 17 problem areas. It covers cars surveyed for the last three years.

Porsche, Genesis, Subaru, Mazda, Lexus, Audi, Hyundai, and BMW all received overall brand scores of at least 75 on a 100-point scale. The midpoint score (half above, half below) was 70. The biggest gainer was Tesla, which jumped eight spots from 19 to 11; its weak point remains reliability, which is below (but not significantly below) average. It’s not clear if there’s a statistical difference between brands rated a couple of points apart.

The 2020 Kia Telluride, tied with Toyota Avalon for the highest overall score, is one of Consumer Reports’ Top Picks and one of ExtremeTech’s 10 Best cars of the year.

Ten Top Picks (And They’re Super-Safe)

Consumer Reports has an annual Top Picks comprising the one top vehicle in each of 10 categories. To be considered, the vehicles must have received a recommended rating from the review and come standard with:

Forward collision warning (FCW)

Automatic emergency braking (AEB)

Pedestrian detection, an adjunct to AEB

CR does not, however, require blind spot detection or adaptive cruise control. The CR-required safety features can be implemented by a single, sub-$100 camera mounted at the top of the windshield. Blind-spot detection (BSD) requires multiple rear sonar/radar sensors. Some safety experts say BSD is crucial especially for older drivers who have trouble looking over their shoulders. Adaptive cruise control (ACC) makes rush-hour commutes and long highway drives less stressful and safer as well. But it, too, requires a separate front-facing radar. With forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, you don’t know the device is working until it’s almost too late, while ACC slows you as soon as the vehicle in front slows or brakes.

Among the overall brand ranking, the biggest loser was Acura, which fell eight places from 16 to 24 among the 33 brands. Lincoln and Volkswagen each fell five places, from 8 to 13, and from 11 to 16. The eight automakers at the bottom, scoring below 60 points, remained the same, and CR noted:

The bottom brands are an unchanged club, with Fiat [lowest scoring, 43], Mitsubishi, Jeep, Land Rover, Cadillac, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, and GMC again falling short. We tested a total of 36 models from these brands, and we recommend only the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Among small cars, Consumer Reports picked 33 best used vehicles under $20,000. They have to have performed well on tests when new and have above-average reliability. That includes:

Toyota, 13 models

Lexus, 6

Mazda, 4

Honda 3

While Honda and Toyota both sell a lot of vehicles, the recommended-used-cars differential is more than 4-1 (13 Toyota, 3 Honda). Mostly because of the $20K price cap, there are only two premium-brand European cars cited, the Volvo Xc70 and BMW i3. And in what may be an ominous sign for the US-flagged automakers, among recommended used cars, not a one is from GM, Ford/Lincoln, or Dodge/Chrysler/Ram.

Much of Consumer Reports car coverage is behind a paywall. But it does make freely available safety news (recalls) and some top lines on cars on the site if you don’t want to lay out $39 a year for digital access.
