Just In KASE You’ve Been Listening: Summerfest 7/7/2019
Tumblr media
The last day of Summerfest has arrived and my brother and I are arriving for one last round of concerts. We head to the Kement’s Stage, which focuses on local music to the Milwaukee area, for the 6 p.m. show. The group playing is improvisational jazz group KASE, and they put on a great show! The band laid down downtempo grooves for just under two hours. The group has an ability to seemingly know where the others are headed at any given time and it feels as if any of the musicians at any time can take the lead and move into a slightly different direction and the others are always right there. The band includes a DJ/turntablist, a drummer on electric drums, bass player and a trumpeter (who uses some effects as well). They had a few guests that were adding freestyle vocals in a variety of styles (rap/spoken word/sang) as well throughout the set, which added to the laid back and family like atmosphere that was felt in the open air space with a grassy area surrounded with big comfy chairs and picnic tables. This was a great show and if you have any interest in downtempo electronic music, modern-thinking jazz, improvisational music or even if you need to listen to something that you could let drift into the background this band is for you.
Tumblr media
After talking to a couple of the members in KASE for a few minutes, it was time to head over to the Johnson Controls World Sound Stage to catch the show that had just started at 8 p.m. Samantha Fish and her blues rock band were rocking the stage as we walked up to it. She is an excellent player and the band (which included a horn section) was tight. The band rocked and they have a cool R&B sound that pervades the music (this was my first time seeing or hearing her). We stuck for a handful of songs, but also wanted to check out another band that started at 8:30. So, after about 30-40 minutes, we headed over to the Miller Lite Oasis Stage to see Moon Taxi.
Tumblr media
Out of Nashville, TN Moon Taxi is another band, like Samantha Fish, that I’ve read about but never actually heard. They were already into their set and had their crowd up on their feet. They seem to have a loyal following and an interesting sound. They are very organic and mixing lots of diiferent influences into their sound. I feel the description of them being a jam band that doesn’t do a whole lot of soloing is fairly apt. Their songs were upbeat, and had a fun summertime feel to them. The playing was very good and their songcraft was solid. They did not overly engage me, and at times during their songs they would go into an instrumental section and instead of someone stepping up to give a solo the entire band would just continuing riffing together until bringing it back to the vocals. When going into those sections the energy felt like it dropped a little bit until the vocals would come back. They are a nice band and I think a perfect fit for afternoon slots at festivals.
After a few busy days I decided that it was time to call it a week and I headed towards the Summerfest exits to walk into the cool night. It was another excellent year at Summerfest.

Funk From The Dump: Summerfest July 6, 2019
Tumblr media
The second Saturday (also the 2nd to last day) of Summerfest held the promise of some great shows. Fortunately, at least for the shows I selected, it paid off handsomely. My brother and I headed to the fest grounds early to see a local ska band that has been around for over 30 years and has opened for some huge acts when they came through Milwaukee (most recently Jamaica’s The Skatalites). It was a 2 p.m. show and it was fun in the sun. The band churned out upbeat ska rhythms and had the decent-sized crowd (at least for the time slot) up and dancing. Nothing special, but with plenty of solid original material and a couple covers this band helped keep the heat up in the sun-soaked atmosphere.
Let’s fast forward, after my brother and I met a few friends for some drinks around the Milwaukee Bucks new arena, which I had wanted to see the plaza that they had set around it (very nice, btw). I came back with a few of his friends for the night sets, getting back to the park just after 6 p.m. At that time two of us stopped by the Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard Stage to see another local band, Metal Men. They are exactly what they call themselves; they cover the huge hits that were in the metal world at in the early to mid ‘80s. They cover early Metallica, Judas Priest, Cinderella, Dio, Scorpions, etc. The group has a singer that can definitely handle the vocals and a couple shredding guitarists that play those riffs and solos just like you remember them.
Tumblr media
From there, I moved myself to the Rhymesayers’ Stage (Miller Lite Oasis Stage) which for the past several years the hip hop label has held for an afternoon and evening at Summerfest. By the time I got there I was able to hear the end of their artist Evidence who was very good in the short period I heard, then 15 minutes of their house DJ, who was also backing all of the artists. After the 8:45 p.m. show started on that stage and it was one my favorite artists from their stables and that is Brother Ali (pic above, sorry it’s blurry). He put on a great show that lasted just about an hour and had the entire crowd on their feet and singing and dancing along. He is a conscious rapper that for the most part was putting out the great feelings of love and friendship, although he also touched on the political times by diving into a couple songs that came out about 12 years ago, and as he put with issues that unfortunately still can apply today. This was my first time seeing Brother Ali and hopefully it will not be the last.
Tumblr media
It was time to head to my last stage for the 10 p.m. show. I walked over to the Johnson Controls World Sound Stage to see Dumpstaphunk.  Dumpstaphunk is a New Orleans band with deep ties to the city. The founders of the band are Nevilles, specifically keyboardist Ivan and Cousin Ian on guitar. Note: Ian who is the newer of those two to the scene is the son of legendary New Orleans musician Art Neville (The Meters, Neville Brothers). Dumpstaphunk had the packed house going crazy from their first note. I’m pretty sure anybody that was there and had a pulse found whatever room they could to get up and dance, whether it was on top of a picnic table, standing on benches, on the huge floor that feels like it’s being wasted at this particular stage if their aren’t thousands of people grooving to the music. Dumpstaphunk rides that New Orleans groove with a slightly unusual line-up. They have keyboardist, guitarist, drummer, trombone and trumpet. The unusual aspect is the presence of two electric bassists (one of them occasionally plays as a second guitarist and pulls off both instruments as if they were his main one). They are amazing at not playing over each other if playing different lines, and then when really needing to drop the low end, will sometimes double lines. That also keeps their funk a little heavier than some of their other contemporaries in New Orleans (at least ones that I’ve heard). The playing was amazing all night drawing from a fairly deep original catalog and covers that weren’t surprising but were amazingly done. Those included a tip of the hat to Dr. John’s most known song, ‘Right Place, Wrong Time’, a George Clinton medley and at least one more that I wanted to mention but am forgetting off-hand.

There was one song that the horns decided to walk through the audience and play, which then had them stop in the middle of the aisle while the crowd gathered and listened and danced. Then, they dispersed. I saw the trombonist (which you can see in the two pictures above) as he headed back to the stage, and assumed the trumpeter was right around him. As the trombonist is walking back out on stage, I continue to hear the horn sounds through the PA. As I’m watching that and reorienting myself to the stage (I was standing right at the front of the stage behind their VIP pit) I hear a trumpet sound coming from a different area and get bumped a little from behind. Yes, the trumpeter had somehow made his way through the aisles (they were both working the aisles while out there) and was coming from the other side of the stage in front of the first row to try to return to the stage himself. They both get back up and the band continued its amazing set on into the night. This band really needs to be seen live to get the full feel of their musical prowess.
As the music ended, and everyone in attendance wanted it to keep going, I walked out into the dark, cool night knowing that a great night of music had come to a close.
