Episode 16: Alex West on the poetry of ascetics, Sundanese, and palm leaf manuscript culture
Tumblr media
A leaf from Bodleian Library MS Jav. b.3. (R), a manuscript from Indonesia written on palm leaves.
In Episode 16 of Inside My Favorite Manuscript, Dot sits down with Alex West to talk about Bodleian Library MS Jav. b.3. (R), the only surviving copy of the Sundanese poem Bujangga Manik (written ca. 1470-1500). We start with the story, a tale of an ascetic who travels around the island of Java searching for spiritual transcendence, and along the way we discuss the manuscript, religious, and artistic cultures that formed the poem.
Listen here, or wherever you find your podcasts.
Below the cut are more photos and links relevant to the conversation.

The wooden box MS Jav. b.3. (R) is stored in:

Folio 7r, a representative view of the appearance of the palm leaf pages. Note the large hole in the center of the page and two smaller ones on the edges - string originally would have been thread through the holes, to hold the leaves together and to enable them to fan out. The text is inscribed, with no ink.

A close-up of the center of 7r, so you can better see the inscribed writing.

Folio 7v, the other side of 7r.

Dot misspoke during the podcast - the University of Pennsylvania palm leaf manuscripts are from India, not Thailand (the Thai manuscripts are written on paper). Here is one of them, Ms. Coll. 390 Item 82, Āhnikaprayoga, a digest of Hindu rituals from various sources written in 1822. In Sanskrit. Records here and here.

Sederhana tapi Langka
Terinspirasi ketika makan dengan tumis batang kencur, mungkin ga banyak orang yang pernah makan--bahkan informasi tentang batang kencur bisa dijadiin bahan utama masakan juga ga banyak orang yang tau.
Kamu belum pernah coba? Nanti aku masakin ya. Aku ga jamin kamu suka, tapi kamu mungkin setuju dengan pendapatku ini:
Dia sederhana, tapi langka. Dia Murah meriah, tapi ga setiap tempat ada, ga mudah ketika pingin dia ada. Ga setiap warung makan tersedia, ga setiap tukang sayur jual barangnya. Padahal dia sederhana, padahal dia murah meriah.
Sederhana tapi langka. Manusia juga ada yang sifatnya kayak gitu.

The Reedswoman
Tumblr media
Sarkawi or known as Nek Eurih (Reed Grandmother) was the last elder of the Kulawu sect that worshipped the spirits of the woods. Villagers would often see her in the outskirts, carrying bundles of reed with her wooden staff from the wilderness.
She would still often appear many years after she died, hobbling around with her large, twisted feet, appearing down a dirt path by the reed patches of the swamp, or from the depths of the oldest trees of leuweung geledegan (the oldest areas of the forest protected by the village elders).
Tumblr media
She had passed on her knowledge of the dark arts to someone else knowing that her sect was to face imminent persecution under the Dutch government in the early 20th century. She lived out the rest of her years in the woods, gathering reeds and communing with the spirits until she became one herself
Tumblr media
Seeing her is a bad omen. She's always walking towards you, never the other way around. She represents fate, as was destined for you. Whatever path you choose, she will still go your way, and you have no choice but to face her.
Tumblr media
"Eeh, budak bageur..."
'Hello, good child' she would say, nodding and grinning as she sees you down the path. It would be so easy to mistake her for any other old lady.
Tumblr media
"Wilujeng patepang deui..."
'Good to see you again' she would say, as you pass her by. You've never met her before, and you'll probably never see her again.
And then you remember.

My boy Sidin comes walking over there with a young woman who has her child in her arms; she offers us her hut for temporary residence and is willing, for our sake, to stay with her neighbor for a while.—Where is your husband then?
'Oh, sir,' she replied, 'eight days ago a tiger ate him.' She said this with a laughing face as if she were telling a joke.
On this basis, the reader should not imagine that the Javanese are callous and insensitive; that is absolutely not the case. The matter is this: in all the changes of their fate, they behave like born philosophers and quickly adapt to everything.
"As soon as the body is entrusted to the earth, even if the deceased was dearly loved in life, there is no more grieving. 'Grieving doesn't help anyway, and 'done deeds don't turn back that way! Why mourn someone for a long time when you can die yourself any day?'—That's roughly how they view things."
Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn (1867), translated from Licht- en schaduwbeelden uit de Binnenlanden van Java (Light and Shadow from Java’s Interior)

Before, Now & Then (Nana)
Tumblr media
Next level!

I don’t have much context for what was said and what happened but I don’t think I’d stop supporting Palestine because of what was said. He’s just one person. Idk, stop treating these people like idols and trends I guess 🫡? Then you won’t be disappointed when they go mask off racist. Your support should extend further than idolization.
