Six Sentence Sunday 06.11.23 / Mood Music Monday

It is what it is, and sometimes you just have to walk away and hope for the best.  I’ve been so busy and it’s been very difficult to write, even though I have a nice little spot for it now that I created.  I have more items coming in on Tuesday to make it the perfect writing space / office space.  I’m really trying to upper level adult here, save some money, pay down some things, and next year, take that Greece Trip I that I couldn’t in 2020  when it got cancelled due to Covid, The one I imagined in the epic birthday Fic  Greek Meat.

Chapter 5: Moonlight Rendevous The Book:  TRR (no royals) The Series:  The Blue Honey Cafe The pairings: TRR MC is single Status:  Still in the writing process / almost complete!

Mason was chivalrous, a complete southern gentleman.  He had not only opened the door on her own vehicle, he had waited for her to get in and gently close the door behind her.  When they made it to Wheelz,  Mason jumped out of the vehicle like a rocket, as soon as it was parked, opening the door for her once more.  

“Will you at least let me pay for the skate rental?”

“No, it’s the least I can do for your being kind enough to take me home tonight.”  

“I’m not heartless, I wouldn’t leave you stranded like that.”

“It’s the south,  I was far from stranded. But I’m glad you decided to indulge your blooming southern charm to help me out. Come on, let’s see what you’ve got out there on the rink.”  

It quickly turned into healthy competition and showboating between the two as they skated around the rink.

“Not bad New York.  Not bad at all.”   Mason laid on a thickly horrible new york accent.

“Likewise North Cakalacky.”  Riley said with an even worse southern accent.

The last skate turned out to be a couple’s skate.  The music was slow, and had a romantic feel. She found herself leaning closer into Mason, who had a boyish grin on his face, and he in turn pulled her closer to him too, his hand gripping hers tighter.

Driving back neither said a word, lost in their own thoughts.  When they pulled to a stop at Mason’s apartment, Riley was the first to speak.  

“I really enjoyed spending this time with you Mason.  I feel like we got a chance to get to know each other a little bit better, and we’re both a little competitive apparently.”  

Mason laughed.   “Right?!?!?! Nothing like some good healthy competition to get the blood pumping. But seriously Riley,  I had a great time with you too.”

He paused for a moment.  

“You know Riley, tonight doesn’t have to end  right now if you don’t want it to.”

Riley’s eyes met Mason’s.  “Are you asking me up to your place?”  

“I am, It’s your choice.  I promise to be the perfect gentleman.”  

“What if I don’t want you to be, Mason?”

“Eleanor and Nicolas! Stop with the kissy face already! Acting like there isn’t a wedding today! You come with me! And you! Put on a damn shirt! She’s already pregnant!”

Elle burst out laughing.

“Mama! Seriously!!”

“Yes I’m serious, you put on some damn clothes!”  

Mama K was brutally honest and very hilarious. Once back in the room with Mama K, she looked at Elle in silence for a moment.  “I presume you two are alright.”  

“Better than ever.”  

“Then let's get you dressed.”

“Thank you Mama.  You have no idea how much this means to me.”  

“Yes I do Eleanor, because you have told me a thousand times already.  You are loved immeasurably today, and always by me.  You are my daughter, and you make my son incredibly happy.  And after today, all of us will finally be family by law, but we’ve always been family in the eyes of God.”

There was a soft knock to the door.  

“It better not be Nico trying to sneak over here.” Mama K opened the door and smiled quickly ushering her into the room.

“You have a guest Elle.”  

“I hope I'm not too late.”

“LIBBY!”

“Great you’re not dressed yet,  I thought maybe I could help too?  And I have a gift for you. Something old and borrowed. Mama K said she already handled the something blue.”  

“Libby… I can't wear that.  It’s Mother’s.”  

“She always said she wanted her daughters to wear this on their weddings.  You’re getting married.”

Elle shook her head.  “She wouldn’t want me…. She didn’t want me….”  

“Wear it Elle.  It’s a piece of your mother, even though she couldn’t be here with you. I know this is not how you wanted things to be, but you are surrounded by the people who love you, just like Nico said. We love you Elle.”  

Today, with the help of her sister, and “Mother,” she was putting on a dress, unlike any other dress.   

A dress in  a style she never thought she would ever want to wear again, a dress she thought was incredibly beautiful, that would in addition to the vows, give her a new life.She was leaving this room Eleanor Rys, but by the end of the day she would be Eleanor Karahalios,  Wife of Nicolas, mother of Eliana, and the little one growing in her belly at that moment. It’s finally time for the best part.

“I feel beautiful.”  

“You look beautiful.”  

“It’s really happening,  I’m getting married today.”

six sentence sunday for hands down 🤩

Hi anon, thank you so much for this ask!

So I do have a snippet of the next chapter that I can share with you, but it won't be going up until next week. This week is my busiest week of the year. I wasn't planning on posting at all. Of course, then I was struck with this totally bonkers inspiraton and now I have a Flashfic that I'm going to try to get up tonight or tomorrow morning before things kick into high gear for me.

He surveyed the room, observing each of the women, hoping for some sign as to who the right choice would be. He had spent the last few months with them at various events, spending one on one time with each of them, trying to make a connection or find a spark of something. He would always end up comparing them to her, and they would always come up short. 

But she wasn’t here. She rejected the invitation. 

Throughout the social season, his mind would drift to thoughts of Riley Brooks, memories of their night together. But that’s all they were, and all they would ever be. He had barely slept since the season began, spending his nights going over his options, trying to figure out who would be the best choice to rule by his side.

Some homebrew stuff I’ve been working on, this time for the Bard. College of Jest and College of Rhythm. Check it out.

College of Jest

There are those who sing anthems that fill the listener’s hearts with hope, courage and joy. There are dancers capable of telling epics through their bodies and mesmerizing rhythm. Then there are bards of the College of Jest. They are the comedians, the prankers and the jokesters. (Un)welcome guests everywhere as they take immense pleasure in ridiculing the rich and powerful. Using their wit they can craft insults and retorts so powerful it can bring a lesser person to their knees. Because bards following this college have a habit of mouthing off to the wrong people, they are likely to stick with a troupe of musicians or a band of adventurers for their own safety. They often have small bounties, as no nobleman can stand for his Sunday finest being compared to the droppings of an owlbear.

Rapier Wit

When you pick this archetype you learn the vicious mockery cantrip and tasha’s hideous laughter, if you do not know these spells already. As a bard of this college you deal 1d8 psychic damage with vicious mockery. This increases by an additional d8 when you reach 5th, 11th and 17th level.

Playing the Crowd

As a talented comedian you know how to get a laugh, even from your failures. When you miss a melee attack or fail an ability check you can use a bonus action to cast tasha’s hideous laughter.

Bite the Thumb

Starting at level 6 you learn how to command the attention of your audience. As a bonus action you may expend one Bardic Inspiration die. All hostile creatures within 30ft must make a wisdom saving throw. On a failed saving throw the creature’s speed is halved when not moving towards you. They also have disadvantage on all attack rolls not aimed at you. This feature lasts for a number of rounds equal to the number rolled on the Bardic Inspiraton die. You regain use of this feature after a short or long rest.

Captivating Armor

You got to have a pretty thick skin to work in comedy. When you reach level 14, your armor class is 12 + your charisma modifier.

Parody

At 14th level you learn an entirely new way to mock your opponents. Using the Parody skill you copy the actions one other creature within sight performed last turn. This includes abilities you are not familiar with and abilities you don't have spellslots for. If the creature used more than one action, you have to pick the first of the actions. This feature can be used once before requiring a long rest until it can be used again.

Note: I realize WotC made their own funny bard with the college of Satire. I feel like that one is more a court jester and this one more a comedian, if that makes sense. At level 14, parody might be exploited to become broken af, but I kinda like it. Purely from a balancing perspective, it might be best to limit its use till 6th or 7th level spells to avoid exploiting spells like wish...... Or don’t and let the bard do what bards do best.

College of Rhythm

Bard colleges are not usually formal in nature. An apprenticeship, a group of musically inclined friends or family, just having a feel for music’s sway can be developed into becoming a full-fledged bard. One college however, is slightly less formal than the rest. Typically practiced on the streets of metropolitan areas, the College of Rhythm is accessible to all, but mastered by only a few. Taking percussion, slam poetry, and any instrument that may fit into the bard’s own style, a master from this college sings with flow and precision matched only by the great poets of old. Despite that, it is a very sociable college. Bards of Rhythm are eager to lend a helping hand to their communities and are more than willing to share their art.

Cypher

When you choose this college, you learn that the best way to master your art is to collaborate with others. Starting at level 3, you can use the ‘help’ action as a bonus action instead. When your allies choose to ‘help’ you, they may also use a bonus action instead of a regular action.

Remix

Also starting level 3, when the initiative order has been decided, you may decide that it isn’t up to your usual standards. In this case, you may spend an inspiration dice to either add or subtract to a creature’s initiative score. You can only use this feature at the beginning of combat.

Freestyle

Starting at level 6, your performances flow so well into each other that they start to affect your other skills. When making an acrobatics, animal handling, or sleight of hand check, you may roll performance instead. You can use your Charisma score for one Saving Throw of your choice per day.

Rapid Flow

At level 14 you’ve mastered articulating at incredible speeds. As a result, you can perform simpler incantations much faster than other spellcasters can. Cantrips and level 1 spells can be cast using a bonus action.

Pass the Mic

Level 14 feature. As a student of the College of Rhythm, you know exactly when you need to jump in and when you need to fade out to make room for someone else. By spending an inspiration dice, you may forgo your bonus action and allow one of your allies to make an action during your turn in the initiative. This does not change their place in the initiative order. Pass the Mic can only be used once a day for any one ally.

The ally receiving an action during your turn may use it to disengage, dodge, hide, help, attack, dash or use an object. They receive no movement, bonus action or additional reaction.

Note: Ever wanted to play a rapping bard? No? Too bad. Making this one I didn’t realize I set out to make a bard even more supportive than usual, but most of this kit seems to make the college of rhythm bard a teamplayer. Pass the Mic however I am not sure about. Mainly because it doesn’t seem a lot of fun for the bard themselves. Perhaps upgrade Rapid Flow to include up to 4th level spells instead?
