the best part of SVSS is how relateable shen yuan is. we all have at least 1 piece of media that we're MAD we know so much about and have invested so much time in. it's fucking TERRIBLE but we've gotten in fights online about it. we are invested in 1 blorbo and the rest is garbage. i'm a star wars fan, i experience this on the DAILY. i understand shen yuan INTIMATELY. i voluntarily watch SUPERNATURAL and have emotions about it of COURSE i understand shen yuan getting so mad about proud immortal demon way he DIED. i almost did seeing how dean winchester died on a fucking rusty nail. could you imagine seeing the supernatural series finale, getting so angry you DIE, and then waking up in the WORLD of supernatural as like, CROWLEY or some shit? and then you realize eric fucking kripke is stuck with you there? imagine watching the trainwreck of the rise of skywalker, DYING from rage, and waking up in the phantom menace and you're like, darth maul. and you're stuck there with GEORGE LUCAS himself. and you can't act that out of character or else you go back to being DEAD in real life? if this happened to me i would react the same way as shen yuan i would lose my fucking mind.

Because, like, based on what I see from the SVSS fandom, it's not... a wholly crazy parallel to draw????

SVSS Fic Rec List

I figured I'd make a fic rec list for the Scum Villain fics I've been reading lately, since that's been a large portion of my recent fic reading. It's 90% Luo Binghe/Shen Yuan, I am a simple woman. (I'm calling SQQ Shen Yuan for this list and original!SQQ Shen Jiu, to avoid confusion.)

Multichapter Fics:

Run For Cover--Modern setting, Shen Yuan summons a dangerous demon. Quite a bit of attempted murder!!! 56k.

If Marriage Was an Olympic Sport--Shen Yuan gets wifeplotted into a marriage hunt. Binghe, fresh out of the abyss, joins the fun. 34k.

Tarnished Gold--Binghe schemes against Gongyi-Xiao!Shen Yuan, and tries not to catch feelings. Immensely slow burn but I was living for it. 118k.

Heartbreak and Other Foreplay--Modern setting, Luo Binghe mistakes Shen Yuan for Shen Jiu and seduces him with revenge in mind. The misunderstanding doesn't last too long but it does cause some chaos. Also, this AU still has cultivation (and, notably, dual cultivation). 108k.

raised by winter winds--Shen Yuan transmigrates into a random Qing Jing disciple and becomes Shen Jiu's head disciple (their relationship is a complicated mess). When Luo Binghe arrives, he asks if he can take Luo Binghe as a pet. 35k.

you are who you love--Shen Yuan gets selective amnesia and forgets about Binghe post-canon. Binghe must seduce him in order to cure said amnesia the same way PIDW cures everything. 38k.

Tongfang--Shen Yuan transmigrates into a sickly young master who canonically is supposed to be a murder victim. Binghe is loaned out by Cang Qiong to work there seasonally. 24k.

Oneshots Or Short Enough I'm Pretending They're Oneshots:

Imposter Syndrome--Shen Yuan, Luo Binghe, Shang Qinghua, Liu Qingge, and Yue Qingyuan run into a doppelganger situation (Dungeon Meshi style, apparently, but easy to understand if you haven't watched Dungeon Meshi--I haven't). 11k.

petal and vine--Plant!Shen Yuan with amnesia, after Huayue City. 5k.

right from the start, i gave you my heart--Jinlan City confrontations grow more complicated when Shen Yuan gets pollened by an obedience curse flower. 11k.

I Want You To Be Happier--Shen Yuan gets full blown amnesia in Jinlan City. Binghe claims they're married and runs away with him. 12k.

Medical Diplomacy--Post-Abyss Binghe finagles an arranged marriage with Shen Yuan, leveraging that he can cure Without a Cure. 12k.

Consanguine--Prince!Shen Yuan and now-Emperor!Luo Binghe (they're siblings... sort of) are reunited after some misunderstandings of the past.

suno to zaraa ye phoolon ki vaadi--Plant!Shang Qinghua after Shang Qinghua gets killed, but he starts out as a tiny small child due to some miscalculations. Rare Mobei-jun/Shang Qinghua fic on this list!! 9k.

Cold Hands, Warm Heart--Unable to use spiritual power and stranded in the middle of nowhere, Mobei-jun has to watch while Shang Qinghua gets worsening hypothermia. The h/c is incredible. 16k. Once again MobeiShang!!! 16k.

Plastromancy--Shen Yuan is the Other Shizun in a sort of a Coraline AU. 16k.

Mermay plot

Not me thinking about a merpeople plot for my favorite boys. One with a Selkie Shang Qinghua with his cute fuzzy and chubby body of a harp seal that never fully grew out of his white baby fur/coloring because he rarely stays in his mer form long enough and has long ago learned to adapt to blending in with humans because life is dangerous for his kind from what he understands of ocean politics, and selkies are nearly extinct because they are not trusted by human or mer for having one fin in the water and one foot on land. Due to most of their kind having died during a war between mer and human where their people tried to mediate and were cut down by both men and mer, (which was how he ended up washed up on land as a child during a bloody confrontation)

Shang Qinghua had long ago chosen to hide his fur and live as a human. After much struggle to adapt to land, he eventually became the accountant in charge of an entire ship and crew’s documents and money as well as keeps rigorous track of cargo and who comes and goes as well as scheduling. It’s tiring work, but it pays well and allows him to stay close to the ocean, while not risking going in it and being murdered like many of his people were before he assimilated to human life. And what human would expect a Selkie to join a military ship. He keeps his fur securely locked away so no one will ever know, and those who see it assume he hunted it and that it was a normal seal fur.

Of course, life can’t be too easy, and when there is an aquatic attack and the captain of the ship is dragged under water by a terrifying mer that looks suspiciously like the young first mate that fell overboard during a pirate attack/vicious storm several years back. The ship is damaged and Shang Qinghua decides to make a run for it and hopefully escape to live another day. Between freezing to death in the arctic waters as a human, and risking the wrath of the mer if they catch him, he decides he may be able to be pitiful enough to beg for their mercy.

Of course, he was not prepared to slip off the back of the ship with his fur where nobody is looking at the moment, only to land in the water directly in front of a HUGE, hulking, terrifyingly vicious looking killer whale mer. With long sharp claws and rows of deadly teeth, the body parts of crew members that had attempted to escape floating in the water shrouded in a mist of blood and gore.

Seal vs Orca. He knows how that will end.

Meanwhile Mobei Jun sees a thought to be extinct arctic Selkie drop off a ship and right in front of him. Small. Adorable. Eyes wide and terrified. Fur white, though it looks pink because of the mist of blood in the water. It’s probably so scared because it was kept by those disgusting humans. Perhaps they were keeping it to sell it, or kill if for its fur, or something equally terrible for a creature long thought lost and were highly regarded by the arctic mer, even if the regular selkies were not by the rest of the seas.

And it tries to swim away. The poor, adorable, addled creature. It’s clearly confused and in shock.

Scum Villain AU where Shen Yuan is a god capable of possessing mortals for a set amount of time.

Luo Binghe doesn’t realize it at first, but it gets hard not to notice how Shen Qingqiu changes for a day at a time every few months. Or how Ming Fan makes a complete 180 to give him a new cultivation manual. Or how NYY gains very specifically useful wisdom overnight which she imparts while calling him “Binghe” instead of “A’Luo”.

He realizes the god is there, and he’s falling madly in love with him as Shen Yuan keeps possessing people to aide him randomly. Shen Yuan OF COURSE gets jealous every time a wife is about to become a wife so he ends up inadvertently sabotaging the wife plots by saving Binghe in the wife’s body and Binghe is just like: mmm my beloved god doesn’t think I know he’s the one doing this. He’s so cute. I love him so much. I’m going to ascend one day and personally make him take responsibility.

Shen Yuan Disciple AU where an extremely vengeful disciple performs a ritual that brings back Wu Yanzi (same thing that brought Wei Wuxian back) so Wu Yanzi realizes he can get revenge on Shen Qingqui while under the guise of one of Qing Jing’s innocent disciples.

A great target for this is that favorite little disciple of Shen Jiu’s, Shen Yuan, who may or may not be Shen Jiu’s brother or illegitimate child…? Either way, it’s obvious Shen Jiu cares about this one in particular and how fitting the two look so similar.

Posing as an older disciple, Wu Yanzi starts by being friendly to Shen Yuan to gain his trust, then offers to assist him in cultivating, but through their “training” he becomes more and more physically rough often leaving Shen Yuan with hidden injuries. Worse, Wu Yanzi convinces Shen Yuan that all of this was Shen Jiu’s idea and he condones this extra training because Shen Yuan is too weak in his eyes.

So Shen Yuan doesn’t say anything out of fear of being accused of complaining or being weak.

As Wu Yanzi starts weaving demonic cultivation into the training, Shen Yuan starts to catch on (being far more knowledgeable about the PIDW world than Wu Yanzi could ever anticipate with SY being a transmigrator.) When confronted, Wu Yanzi threatens SY’s friends, especially Lou Binghe.

With Shen Jiu, he’s irritated because while he was tough on his (secret favorite) disciple, SY didn’t need to flinch at his gaze.

On the other side, Lou Binghe notices the increasing turmoil in his best friend/crush’s demeanor; then, he notices a limp and the bruises. Shen Yuan makes excuses, but eventually lets it slip that Shizun had him doing extra training with an older disciple. One day, Shen Yuan comes back worse than ever and enough is enough.

Storming into the bamboo house, Lou Binghe confronts their shizun. Shen Qingqui is, of course, enraged at the little beast’s accusations until Ning Yingying backs up Lou Binghe’s story. Shen Qingqui does not appreciate being blamed for abuse he didn’t actually commit especially towards one of the disciples he (likes) tolerates.

Even more angst if while all this is happening, Wu Yanzi realizes he’s running out of time to subject Shen Qingqui to the same fate as him so he speeds up the plan to force Shen Yuan to betray his master just as Shen Qingqui did to Wu Yanzi all those years ago.
