Kilwa

Kilwa, an island located off the coast of East Africa in modern-day southern Tanzania, was the most southern of the major Swahili Coast trading cities that dominated goods coming into and out of Africa from and to Arabia, Persia, and India. Kilwa flourished as an independent city-state from the 12th to 15th century CE largely thanks to the great quantity of gold coming from the kingdom of Great Zimbabwe to Kilwa's southern outpost of Sofala. Kilwa boasted a huge palace complex, a large mosque, and many fine stone buildings at its peak in the 14th century CE. The arrival of the Portuguese in the early 16th century CE spelt the beginning of the end of Kilwa's independence as trade declined and merchants moved elsewhere.

Camels🐪 might look unusual in a place like the African Coast, but they're actually quite common. Arab traders used the monsoon winds since times immemorial, to come and go from Arabia and India to the East Coast of Africa to trade in resources, ivory, spices and also slaves. And they brought the Camels. There are strings of old Swahili towns all along the coast, with Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam in todays Tanzania🇹🇿 probably being the most well-known and Malindi further north here in Kenya🇰🇪 a quite famous one as well. Malindi is also the place, where Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer stopped and repaired his ships, on his way to finding a passage to India. Beach: Backpacking Watamu

Vår resa: Vi lämnade Mombasa tidigt en morgon, med siktet mot norr, mot Watamu. Vi passerade den galna trafiken i förorten Mtwapa oskadda och Vipingo med sina enorma sisal plantager bredde ut sig framför oss. Det var mycket trafik, trots att det var lördag morgon, som vanligt var det många av de lokala bussarna, “matatus” och motorcykeltaxi “Boda boda” som saktade ner trafiken.

The Portuguese in East Africa

The Portuguese first took an interest in East Africa from the beginning of the 16th century as their empire spread eastwards across the Indian Ocean. Trade in the region was already well-established and carried out by Africans, Indians, and Arabs. Attacks on the trading cities of the Swahili Coast and the Kingdom of Mutapa by the Portuguese did not bring any tangible benefits as traders simply moved to the north. Consequently, the Europeans decided to concentrate on the area which became Portuguese East Africa (aka Portuguese Mozambique) further south. Mozambique was settled by Portuguese who integrated with local communities in the country's interior. Mozambique remained a Portuguese colony until independence was achieved in 1975.
