some important additions that I have just been informed of
One of my quarantine projects is making an excel sheet of all of the animals that appear in Pirate101 and Wizard101 and trying to identify their historical references, and I’ve go to say:
KingsIsle really fucking likes frogs, huh?
#look i haven’t played wizzy101 in years#also Nigel and the street sweepers are basically the same#quarantine#pirate101#wizard101#kingsisle#video games#frogs

a finer day than many since for a stroll, the londoners that frequent hyde park might say - and indeed they were, as will could catch various pieces of their conversation in his ears, trained to pick up the motives and musings of even the most ordinary passerby. one comments on the sun being perfect in that precisely may month way, the other upon the unlikelihood of rain and the atrocious feathers adorning another woman’s hat just down the path. will dismisses this, shouldering past clucking hens and fellows done up in whiter than mourning suits, glamoured as the others in their party. there is jessamine, her parasol clutched delicately between her gloves as she sniffs at the air, determining even the park to be undignified. and tessa, who’s beseeching of will led to his accompanying them lest the lovelace beat another demon to death in a tizzy and ruin the outing tessa so wished to enjoy. will supposes that makes him their escort: an obliging he’d neither volunteered for or had much cause to protest. truthfully he still was curious about miss gray, and spending an afternoon alone with jessamine tittering on would not be so considerable a risk.
he toes the path behind her with his boot, arms folded behind his back as if to attention, a bored glance upwards as she addresses him. mr. herondale, she says, and for some reason it makes him think of his parents and their rare squabbles which increased in the days before will fled home. ( what would she think of him, to know that his father was mr. herondale and he was a gambler, and his mother was not a fragile mundane but one firmer than a strike of lightning against the moors when convicted ? ) not that mentioning his family was any inclination of will’s to remotely consider, only something in him was rankled by it. she would not care to know him, nor the domestic sphere he’d come from: now he was about as domestic in his seeming as six-fingered nigel, who peddled gin and snuff off fleet street. ❛❛ what was that, miss gray ? my mind was somewhere else entirely. in a tavern just down the street there, in fact. ❜❜ he tilts his head towards her, willfully ignoring the elegant silks of her new dress and the careful buttons of her bodice; noting her sharp brows that raise in preparation for will to say something she must necessarily rebuke and contest.
❛❛ when i first arrived in london, i was i confess amused that there was a place like hyde, that it was novel to these people. a carefully-clipped lawn for a right dismal city, is it not ? ❜❜ he catches up to where she waits on a crest just above the lake ( its shores for once blessedly absent of waterfowl. ) larks chirp in the trees, blossoms sprouting from blades of grass, the dappling light between leaves glinting too in tessa’s eyes, more like the thick clouds of february than a saturday in spring as she beholds him. he shrinks from the attention, guessing how she means to estimate whether he is made of anything better than the crawling beasts of buildings in the city. his allusions to another life far away would seem about as distant to her impression of will as it did to him after the seven years since he became someone else. his voice sounds like words carved upon a tombstone as they walk. ❛❛ how the chimney-sweepers cry, every blackning church appalls. ❜❜

The Scottish Manny

Chapter 7 - Two Coffees
Dawn light still weak in the sky, street sweepers whooshed along Harley Street, cleaning the gutters ahead of another bustling day in the city. Bleary-eyed, Claire unlocked the front door of her surgery and headed for her office to make a start on her paperwork. Propping her head on her hand for just a moment, the next thing she knew someone was squeezing her shoulder.
“Claire, honey; are you all right?”
Disoriented, she looked up to see Joe hovering over her.
“Oh...I must’ve nodded off for a minute there”
Full morning light streaming through the windows, it had evidently been considerably more than a minute.
“It’s not like you to fall asleep at your desk, is everything ok?”
Knowing her friend’s ability to wheedle the truth from her even when she’d rather not give it, the doctor sighed and motioned for Joe to sit down. Beginning with the events of Monday morning, she explained how she’d been on the cusp of inviting Jamie to the museum with her and Fergus, only to chicken out at the last minute when he’d looked so utterly unimpressed by her plans. The apathy soon made sense with the Manny announcing his preferred choice of weekend activity was clubbing and meeting new people.
“Oh Beauchamp, I’m so sorry; you really liked him, huh?”
“But I never said— ”
“You didn’t have to; you light up like a Christmas tree whenever you get a message from him.”
With a sad smile she told Joe about the early morning chats she and Jamie would have over coffee, his ready smile, the shared jokes, the way his eyes would linger. How embarrassing it had then been to realise that while she was looking for someone to fall in love with, he was just looking for someone to fall into bed with.
__
Last minute title change for this chapter as we didn’t quite get to see Claire’s date with potential future husband Nigel 😉 Hope you don’t mind the extended look at the week before it, I thought it only fair after Jamie’s soul searching we get to see what he’s trying to do to dig himself out of the mess he created for himself! Thanks for reading/liking/commenting/reblogging - you make it all worthwhile xx

Football in 2030

It was another eventful year in English football with the outcome once again predictable as Liverpool won their eleventh straight Premier League title. Manager Jurgen Klopp briefly acknowledged their success before moaning that they would have been able to win by a greater margin if he was able to make ten substitutions instead of having the current limit of nine.
Spurs, also for the eleventh year running, were worthy runners up. Mauricio Pochettino, back at the club for a second spell, said ‘next year will be their year’ and is hopeful their twenty-two year trophy drought will come to an end. Veteran striker Harry Kane finally passed Alan Shearer’s record of 260 Premier League goals. Quite a feat for a man who has dropped so deep in recent years, he finds himself playing at sweeper. On the red side of North London, Arsenal continue to believe Mikel Arteta will ‘come good’. To be fair there was some significant progress for the Gunners, winning a North London derby 1-0 against Barnet to seal promotion back into League Two. The only other silverware claimed by Arsenal this season was for their sporting director Willian, who won most hated right winger of the previous decade, narrowly edging out Nigel Farage and Katie Hopkins. Arsenal fans can always be relied upon to win out in an internet poll. There was less good news in the blue corner of London. Chelsea manager John Terry was fired for telling his players not to take the knee. This of course wasn’t the first time Terry had been fired from a managerial job, having lost the Aston Villa job after going too far on a night out with Jack Grealish and King William. For legal reasons I should say that to this day Queen Catherine strenuously denies that a heavily intoxicated Terry ever climbed into their marital bed. Having been completely abandoned by Europe and European football after the British Civil War which followed Boris Johnson’s 2024 re-election, it was nice to see the first Premier League club allowed into the European Super League. Jose Mourinho’s Wolves were finally given permission to relocate to Portugal. Fourty-five year old Cristiano Ronaldo continues to impress and will be hoping to fire Wolves to a first European title in 2031. 2030 has been a momentous year for international football, the centre piece being the 100th anniversary edition of the World Cup. The competition took place in South America, with co-hosts Argentina lifting the trophy thanks to the inspirational performances of Benjamin Aguero, son of Sergio and grandson of Diego Maradona, who sadly left us ten years ago. Their 3-2 triumph over Wayne Rooney’s England side was a classic, with Aguero’s 90th minute winner enough to win the trophy, despite a brace from Wayne’s son Kai. Argentina manager Lionel Messi was full of praise for England, stating it was incredible that they’d made such strides despite being a third world country.
Young Kai Rooney made headlines for the wrong reasons later in the year, falling out with the family after an affair with his mother’s arch nemesis...Rebekah Vardy.
The affair was revealed during a post World Cup reception hosted by Prime Minister Marcus Rashford. Having sadly seen his career ended by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s rugby tackle in a charity game, Marcus had of course got revenge by taking his job in the 2029 general election. Johnson himself had a bad 2030, even by his sorry standards. Having seen Covid-19 eradicated in 2029, he re-introduced it to the UK after a trip to Copenhagen Zoo. It transpired after a government enquiry that he’d had inappropriate relations with a mink the zoo had affectionately named Monica. The tabloids had a field day, describing it as his ‘Monica Lewminksky’ moment. On the subject of ex-American presidents, they had a mixed year. Ten years after losing the presidency, Donald Trump’s MLS franchise ‘New York Pity’ continued their dominance. The key to their success has been refusing to concede defeat. But 2031 looks the most challenging year for him since President Ivanka released him from prison in 2024. This is because next year will see Barack Obama launch his rival Hawaiian MLS team ‘Aloha Obama’. Rumours suggest he’s only going to play Kenyan born players, in a show of defiance to his old adversary Trump. I will be the first to order their ‘Make Hawaii Great Again’ replica kit.

Day 20
“Given the degree of brokenness of the broken world (and the expense of fixing it), we need all maintainers to apply their diverse disciplinary methods and practical skills to the collective project of repair. Jackson proposes that repair-thinking be considered a distinct epistemology. Fixers, he says, “know and see different things — indeed, different worlds — than the better-known figures of ‘designer’ or ‘user.’” Breakdown has “world-disclosing properties.” 8 Similarly, Stephen Graham and Nigel Thrift identify breakdown and failure as “the means by which societies learn to reproduce,” because the repair of broken systems always involves elements of “adaptation and improvisation.” 9”So two days (four days) ago, I delved into my first questions regarding maintenance , and I have come across Shannon Mattern’s journal article on care and maintenance [https://placesjournal.org/article/maintenance-and-care] “A working guide to the repair of rust, dust, cracks, and corrupted code in our cities, our homes, and our social relations. “ Moments that have stood out to me have been: A) “Modern urban dwellers are surrounded by the hum of continuous repair and maintenance,” Thrift observes. We hear the chatter of pneumatic drills, the drone of street sweepers, and, in the city’s peripheral zones, the clang and hydraulic hiss of auto repair and waste management. 13 Even the cacophony of a construction site — a new building going up on a vacant lot — can be a sign of repair. Planner Douglas Kelbaugh proposes that we think of infill construction as a mending of the urban fabric. 14 I have been thinking to attempt playing around with sounds for some of my ‘outputs’ … outputs that might put into the foreground things that do indeed, become peripheral—chatter—-drone—hiss…background. I think that somehow this sonic presence, if brought into foreground, might be a medium to relay relevant questions about why these things are in the background in the first place? I hear this pneumatic drill so fuckin’ often that it’s become part of the connundrum- but what is it doing? What is it building? What is it drilling? Is it public, is it private? Is my tax money paying for it? Whose building it? I’m not sure if when I speak of ecology, or when I speak of my interpretation thereof…. I am attempting to speak of it - in a way that relates to Morton’s ‘ambient poetics, Morton’s ecomimesis… In that - the environment - NATURE- is very much about how we inhabit space — how we occupy it and the consequences/FOLLOW-UPS that that has from a micro-level (when I am JAY walking, am I aware that I am practicing disobedience? an act of resistance? rational resistance? does that make any sense?), to a systemic macro-level (beautify lawns, beautify legs, say yes to neighbourhood recycling, say no,) I was going to say something else about my understanding but I am just going to move on, because this could get sticky I suppose. So this sound business- this cacophony business - I this links back to day 4 or something when I was trying to scream out the components of cement drowned out by the sounds of a construction site (10 hours of— on youtube - meta - who knows where that came from?). I am slowly beginning to realise that this a lot to do with transport infrastructure, what with not only the “pneumatic drills, the drone of street sweepers etc.” but of cars, trucks, beeping and moving etc. Of traffic lights - sensors - When I was working on some research on the Manhattan grid last semester, environmental psychologist, Richard Wener told me that the grid scheme in America is very much in response to the advent of cars. B)
Mattern also points out that the lack of civic responsibility by some patrons clearly sustains “the oppressions of marginalised and underserved populations.” This ties in with aspects of civic and democratic responsibilities/aspects of environmental justice — not only do underserved populations suffer from the first waves of the consequences of pollution - but also because of lack of maintenance. Amongst the article’s resources there is an article called Care and Repair and the Politics of Urban Kindness:
In the face of some pretty grim baseline social facts – seven billion of us and growing fast, catastrophic environmental degradation, an economic system that damages many more than it allows to prosper, schismatic tensions running along a chain of global interconnections, violent exclusion and wasted lives, ‘half of us live in cities, often brutalized; 85 per cent of us own noth-ing’ (2013: 490) – Plummer invites the reader to join him in the sort of thinking that might nudge us towards a better world. If some sociologists today are too much given to misanthropic thinking, then we need a sociology of hope, and even a sociology of better worlds, able to envision and examine both imagined and real utopias. The corruptions that can occupy this space are many. Here is an article from 2011 delineating how five men from a company that was meant to be testing concrete was falsifying documents that tested concrete. https://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/05/nyregion/6-charged-with-falsifying-concrete-testing-results.html I have found refuge in words and in these questions…it has gotten late: What is maintaining/repairing? —> INVESTIGATING —> STANDARDISING —> LINKING —> FILLING —> RELIEVING —> CATEGORISING —> COMMUNICATING (similar to linking?) —> CARING —> PRESERVING —> CONSERVING What is repairing and maintenance needed for? —> SAFETY —> ORGANISATION —> COMFORT —> FUNCTIONALITY —> COEXISTENCE —> CARE C) A lot of the notions/themes that arise from this article really point us towards a philosophy of care and maintenance that is reminiscent of what a circular economy model. Time ago, I proposed a performance that was result of my discovery of a specific e-waste dump in near Ghana’s capital- Agbogbloshie — and I had only really concentrated on the misery that inhabiting a place like this could be….. Mattern highlights the “maker” culture, the social relations, the performances etc. that are borne of this waste stream…. When those machines have lived out their second domestic lives in Ghanaian cafés or homes, they move out into the city, where scrap collectors, processors, and traders — most of them first-generation immigrants — spirit the machines away, accelerating their decomposition into copper, aluminum, iron, and circuit boards. These processes of transformation typically occur in the city’s marginal zones and, as we see in many National Geographic-style photo essays, present serious health risks. The constituent parts are then redistributed — some domestically, some to Nigeria or China — and reassembled into new objects. This “ecosystem of distribution, repair, and disposal” is, Burrell argues, a “fact of life in everyday places marked by scarcity.” 55 I think I will look more into circular economy in the coming days….. D) “ 2 We should also remember that the preservation of our world — the human one — is sometimes at odds with caring for the ecological context. Perhaps not every road should be repaired. Geographer Caitlin DeSilvey encourages us to embrace entropy within the built world, to ask ourselves for whom we engage in preservation, and to consider cultivating an acceptance of “curated decay” where appropriate. 43” The metaphor I pull/ am interested in today is ‘concrete cancer’ …. concrete spalling… or ‘rebar’ which happens when reinforced concrete is built with steel/metal rods or wire as its skeleton. If the cement inside the concrete hasn’t been mixed properly, or if the steel hasn’t been treated properly…. the concrete begins to corrode. I am very much interested in the idea that this process is even called ‘concrete cancer’ in the first place - much of it has to do with the pace with which this process happens: “Concrete cancer does have some similarities with its human counterpart. · It usually develops slowly over an extended period, and obvious signs may not be seen until the condition is advanced. · In its early stages, concrete cancer is often caused by a mutation of the concrete itself. As noted, concrete ‘cancer’ deterioration will usually result from a number of factors; but one key common element is the movement of moisture vapour and moisture-borne contaminants within the concrete’s own porosity. These can set up reactive processes in the concrete itself (e.g. ASR), resulting in expansive forces which drive cracking. Further, the contaminants (e.g. chlorides) can destroy the natural protection of the steel and encourage corrosion.” https://www.markhamglobal.com/concrete-cancer-silent-killer/ https://freyssinet.co.uk/concrete-cancer-can-prevented-concrete-repairs/ https://www.cement.org/learn/concrete-technology/durability/corrosion-of-embedded-materials https://www.architectureanddesign.com.au/suppliers/remedial-technology-pty-ltd/concrete-cancer-repair-what-are-your-options PROMPT: ** Find a process of maintenance in your own micro, daily life, such as re-organising the files in your computer, screen record this process, and perhaps, record the sound as well. Write down thoughts following the process and then write instructions for somebody who might want to do the same without being explicit about what the literal action of maintenance that you are performing is.

Maarten Baas
Maarten Baas.

Chapter 7 - The Date (Preview)
Dawn light still weak in the sky, street sweepers whooshed along Harley Street, cleaning the gutters ahead of another bustling day in the city. With a sad smile she told Joe about the early morning chats she and Jamie would have over coffee, his ready smile, the shared jokes, the way his eyes would linger.
“Looking back on it, I suppose I was confusing routine for romance. He was just doing his job and I was flattered enough to think the attention was something more than professional.”
Joe raised his eyebrows; a practical person, Dr Beauchamp was the last person to imagine affection where there was none.
“Anyway, I thought rather than sit and home and wallow, I should probably get out and make an effort with a real person not just a fantasy”
Anticipating her friend’s reaction to what she was about to say, she looked away; inspecting the leaves of the rubber plant on her desk.
“...And that’s why I accepted a date with Nigel”
“Nigel Blakeney?! Please tell me you’re kidding?”
“I don’t see what the problem is? We’re both medical professionals, both based in south-west London...”
“Are you describing a prospective partner or reading his LinkedIn profile?”
Full chapter posting Saturday (August 29th). Catch up on previous chapters here. What you think? Denial Claire or ready to move on?!Thanks for reading 😘
