Although Star Trek and media fandom are often credited as the beginning of fanfiction, the first fanfiction texts are much older than that and oriented in book fandoms. (The first fanfics are older even than the term fanfiction!) The first two known Tolkien fanfics appeared in the 1960 fanzine I Palantir, and they couldn't be more different.
This Cultus Dispatches column from @silmarillionwritersguild analyzes these two old fics, in particular how they illustrate the fan studies concept of affirmational and transformational fandom. Transformational fandom is often depicted as the fertile field where fanworks grow, but Tolkien fanworks (and probably many other fandoms' fanworks as well) defy this, drawing on affirmational elements oriented in mastery of canon and consideration of Tolkien's authority. The earliest Tolkien fanfics not only show how both "types of fandom" can give rise to fanworks but how, even in fanworks that clearly belong to one or the other, elements of the other fandom approach are essential to making a particular story work.
You can read the article "Affirmational Fandom, Transformational Fandom, and Two Old Tolkien Fanfics" here.

oh, bring your salt, bring your cigarette // draw me a circle, and i’ll protect // heaven is here if you want it…
after writing it for over a year and commissioning several pieces for it from other artists, i finally finished some art of my own for my chainshipping fic, sleeping with ghosts!! not from any real scene in the fic, this was mostly meant to 1) illustrate the protective, codependent relationship adam and lawrence have with each other, 2) illustrate my own take on adam’s jacket decor. it was a lot of fun!! :)

SWG Monthly Challenge stamps, with much thanks to their talented creators.
Some of these are comment stamps. There were plenty of great challenge responses to read and comment on last year.
You can get a better view of the stamps on my profile page at the Silmarillion Writers Guild, which will also allow you to click through to other writers' challenge responses (and my own).

Sauron vs. Finrod in Eregion
Drabble (100 words) & accompanying art for @silvergiftingweek day 3: Collaborators | Community
That summer, the Mírdain decided to perform the Lay of Leithian. They gave Sauron’s role to Celebrimbor. He insisted on Annatar acting the role of Finrod because he looked the part – and was the best singer. At dress rehearsal, Celebrimbor wore a black cape with fur collar and an iron crown he had made for the play. He looked down at Annatar standing before his throne. Their eyes met. A pleasant shiver filled his body.
It occurred to Celebrimbor to improvise.
“I would prefer a battle of wits, but you appear unarmed.”
Annatar collapsed before the throne, howling with laughter.

@ohmyarda's expressive portrait of Tar-Míriel Ar-Zimraphel illustrates @grundyscribbling's biography of the character.
Tumblr media
The downfall of Númenor is one of the (maybe the?) most cataclysmic events in the history of Arda. Involving a literal reshaping of the world and the consequent annihilation of an entire people, it was brought on by the rebellious voyage of Ar-Pharazôn to Aman, against the laws of the Valar. As his (unwilling) wife, Tar-Míriel had a front-row seat to the whole slow toppling of Númenor. Yet, as Grundy notes in this month's biography of Míriel:
"The text does not record Míriel’s reaction to any of these events."
As Grundy's biography of Míriel shows, she emerges as a sort of grace note on Pharazôn's story, at first just a name but then given something of a story of her own. I say "something" because her story is still very much enmeshed in her victimhood at his hands, so much that what she thought or how she reacted (or didn't) to the decisions he made go completely unrecorded.
We've now surpassed more than 150 character biographies on our site. Our reason for beginning that project back in 2007 was to provide resources for people creating fanworks. And while, if asked at the time, we probably would have said a primary aim was making more accessible the histories of some of the more complicated characters, Míriel is a reminder that an equally important purpose is bringing to light those characters whose histories Tolkien left missing, like Míriel. (She is mentioned twice in the published Silmarillion.)
Maybe her reaction to the ending of her world will at last be recorded.
You can read Grundy's biography of Tar-Míriel here, pubished by the @silmarillionwritersguild.
